US gaming publication Games Industry has published a rather interesting and lengthy interview with former Sega America CEO Tom Kalinske. The interview includes Tom talking about the video game industry in general and also the unfortunate decline of Sega. Kalinske also mentioned that he doesn’t believe Nintendo should give up on consoles or hardware, but he does concede that they should perhaps bring some of the iconic IP to iPhones or iPads. He believes they should do this to keep the brands relevant with younger and older consumers.
“I don’t think [Nintendo] should give up hardware or consoles,” Kalinske said. “I am surprised that they haven’t formed a division to extend the IP. I’d love to play some of their games on my iPhone or iPad. It’s really a form of marketing for them in a sense. They wouldn’t even need to make that much money off it, but it would keep their brands relevant with the users, including people that are older, like me. So it seems to me it’s a marketing mistake, but I don’t think they should give up what they’re doing because they’re damn good at it.”
I believe that the Puzzle & Dragons\Super Mario Edition game that’s coming to 3DS should have been a game for Smartphone devices, then they can sell the franchise on there while keeping mario relevant.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse would’ve been the perfect concept for an iOS/Android game, and honestly it probably could’ve sold like hotcakes. Instead it’s another $40 title for Wii U and it doesn’t even translate to the Gamepad/TV setup very well. I think there’s a missed opportunity there.
Finally an outside spokesman that gets it. I don’t agree with fully developing for mobile, Nintendo games should be played on Nintendo platforms. If people would just buy a Wii U then the brand would have always been “relevant” i wouldn’t say Nintendo games are the best as they ever been this generation as that is what everyone says about previous gens and will say in the future. Nintendo games would always be fantastic but some gamers take Nintendo for granted because they still think they are just a “casual” company
I think they should make a “Nintendo App”, allowing you to connect your NNID to it to access things like Miiverse, eShop, or even enter a friend code while your away so you don’t forget to do it later. They could even throw in a few classics that would be fit for smartphones, such as the original Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Metroid, Kirby, etc. The VC games would be free if you connect your NNID, or they are payed for if you don’t have one. They could even offer special sales if you link the app with your NNID. Like, “10% off the newest VC games this week”. WHY ISN’T THIS A THING YET!?!?

Yet, Commander Quadraxis was probably here before them, haha. Anyway, I’ve been here since about late summer of 2014, so I’m kinda late here, but it’s still nice to see the members of this website become cleaner than before, without the actions of mods since they never really ban anybody (just once, I saw somebody get banned for extremely racist reasons). It’s a good example of how strong a community can become overtime by themselves. People probably come and go after a while, but it seems that lately more fans are ignoring trolls, so trolls come here less frequently.
Since fall 2014, notable trolls I noticed that perished are nostalgiawww and ps4. I miss Anubis, he seemed like a cool guy :( There’s also this Nintendo Blood Reborn guy that I associated with Commander Quadraxis. I’mABAB was probably the best newcomer to this website in recent times.

Nintendo needs to release some of their games for android and iPhone while continue to support handheld and home consoles they create. I think not only would Nintendo benefit from it, but Nintendo would have a whole new name. I do agree the Nintendo experience is best on Nintendo consoles. But why not have a little experience in phones? This could attract non Nintendo fans while also giving Nintendo developers fun small projects to work on. It also opens a door for smart phone yo console integration that Nintendo really could use. On my android phone I could play mini games to earn Rupees, which are then synced with the cloud/console for the legend of Zelda. Or fatal frame android/iPhone version that links to the main game on Nintendo systems.
I know Nintendo will keep saying the Nintendo experience is on console and while I agree, phone games would help players really want to buy their systems.
But Sega should give up because of the opposite reason; they now suck at what they use to be good at.
I agree with this former SEGA CEO. Nintendo is the only company that offers different, unique game experiences. Sony and Microsoft basically just copy each other. Nintendo is the best family-friendly company there is.

Little mini games would be a great way to become relevant to the new generation. Imagine mobile wario ware, or as mentioned, Dr Mario. F-Zero mobile I feel like would be a hit and maybe revive the franchise for a new console version.

All these thoughts of what Nintendo should do regarding the mobile market… Do any of these people and analysts ever think of the kind of games Nintendo makes? Do they think jumping on the “go mobile” bandwagon would improve their sales without it meaning a shift on the effort from making critically acclaimed games to cheaper ones designed to get cash at all costs and/or that would leave their own hardware with more chances of game droughts? Even with the aid of second-party development teams, it means money and time being put into something that doesn’t guarantee constant success and that, just as I said, it’s an inversion. More or less risky, but an inversion every time you create a game, whatsoever.
Pointing out where the business might be is great, but these people tend to forget they’re asking a single company to have their games in 3 different kinds of platforms and keep their signature quality.
