Square Enix CEO Is Aware Of Dragon Quest Demand Here In The West

Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda says he is fully aware of the demand for Dragon Quest titles in the west. Matsuda announced only today that Dragon Quest Heroes is coming to the United States and Europe on the PlayStation 4 and he believes that the Dragon Quest franchise has a “bright future” ahead of it in the west. Hopefully that means localising Dragon Quest titles for the Nintendo 3DS. Matsuda also said that we should look forward to more announcements in the near future.

Matsuda acknowledges a number of Dragon Quest titles were not released in France (in the West, if you prefer, heh) but he and the DQ team are aware of the demand. He says he thinks they (the DQ team) have some ideas on how to make the franchise successful in the West, and asks us to look forward to upcoming announcements and to a “bright future” for the series.

  1. YESSSSS!!!! Hopefully this means the Dragon Quest 7 3DS remake and all versions of Dragon Quest 10 will come here to the US!!! btw am I the only one here who’s hyped for Dragon Quest Heroes?! Another reason for me to get a PS4!!! Can’t wait!

    1. I mean this news seriously made me happy! and I’m not even a Dragon Quest fan!! (never played any of the games but im planning too soon) This could mean any dragon quest game that comes out will always come to other regions!!!

    2. I honestly wasn’t interested in DQ Heroes initially. When it was first announced, I brushed it off as another reskinned Dynasty Warriors. However, I decided to watch some gameplay videos and boy was I wrong.

Yes, it has some similar gameplay elements to the Dynasty Warriors series, but it leans more to an ARPG formula and makes it its own. It looked awesome. I am actually pretty excited to play it when it hits the PS4.

With that said, I hope some of the more traditional DQ games are localized too.

    1. Click your icon at the top of the page when you’re logged in and go to settings. You should be able to change your icon there.

  2. Why PlayStation but not Nintendo? When demanding a game we want variety with the platforms. Where’s that Dragon Quest game on Wii U and 3DS?

  3. “He says he thinks they (the DQ team) have some ideas on how to make the franchise successful in the West”

My gut reaction is microtransactions and Seth Green.

  4. Go screw yourself in the piss pipes with a rake Square. No Dragon Quest X, no KH 1.5 + 2.5 for Wii U (which would be appropriate considering how many of those games are on Nintendo consoles), and now this insult when you claim you hear people’s want for Dragon Quest. Frankly I’d understand the no DQX for Wii U in West if it wasn’t in Japan. but it’s kinda very insulting to not even explain why not put it in the west. If it’s a game worth a damn then it will draw its audience. But I guess nurturing or even trying to establish a demographic would just be asking much too much.

    1. I don’t understand why 3rd parties insist on representing one line of platforms not others. There was a time (like the Wii and DS days) where 3rd parties would represent many platforms no matter how different the hardware is because it could sell. Just because the PlayStation brand is currently the top selling in the hardware department doesn’t mean those are the platforms people are demanding they be on. I wouldn’t get my hopes yet on Dragon Quest X it could be years before they think about localizing it

      1. Well it wouldn’t make much sense for them to produce it for other plattforms. They developed it for next gen, so they could either go for ps4 or ps4 and xbox, but since it’s a Japanese game the decision was surely easy. They even made a ps3 version, i dont see a reason to complain

        1. DQX is already out on the Wii U in Japan so I’m not getting your point. If you’re talking about the other games that this article mentioned, I don’t think anyone’s asking for ports of those to the Wii U. Least ways I’m not. I’d be satisfied with just the damned game that’s already on the console to be translated over.

      2. Considering how Square has been non-stop on Sony’s jock as of late, I personally don’t have any hope or expectation of that happening. Lately companies look at hardware sales as an easy means of selling their games cause nurturing and growing an audience is hard. Why do that when you can just toss it out on a popular console and “possibly” sell tons? If they do localize, I’m willing to bet it’d be after all the steam has run out of DQX’s sails and while they’re shutting down servers just so the cruddy experience that result in cruddy sales will “justify” why they don’t port over more Square games. Balless bastards.

  5. DO ANY OF YOU know how many people I PERSONALLY KNOW that have no idea that DRAGON QUEST and DRAGON WARRIOR are the same thing? ALL OF THEM! MY GENERATION OF AMERICANS – GAMERS FROM 1987-2004 – PLAYED DRAGON WARRIOR NOT DRAGON QUEST! WHAT THE FUNK! WORST FOUL UP EVER! At the very WORST – there are enough DQ fans to make EACH title translated “break even” or make just enough cash that squeenix should go for it – they may not make a mint but they will always make a slight profit, and each title thereafter – slightly more….sigh…

  6. SO many Dragon’s Quest games, yet I’ve never played a single one. Except, I played a few minutes of (I think it was) Dragon’s Quest VIII on PS2. I loved the graphical art style. Reminded me of the Pokémon anime.

  7. what surprising me is that he knows RPG are popular in Europe with France leading the way but then go and decide to put it on the 3DS (which is Japanese focus).

It’s true France has the same mentality as Japan when it comes to video, animes and manga but in France the home console is the preferable option hence why I don’t understand the logic.

If he was not for the translation issue and the market size than France/ Canada (quebec area) could have had so many games….
