Nintendo ‘Moves On’ From Bringing Game Boy Titles To 3DS Virtual Console

Don’t expect any more Game Boy titles to hit Virtual Console on Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo has “moved on” from supporting the service with additional Game Boy games, according to Natsume, which has also confirmed it has no further Game Boy, Game Boy Color, NES or SNES games heading to 3DS Virtual Console. The last batch of Game Boy titles to arrive via the service in North America was the Donkey Kong Land trilogy, which was released earlier this year.

  1. They are beginning to end the 3DS when the NX (NEXT HANDHELD) launches next year. Some could hope the VC on it will get more old games, but don’t hold your breathe, each console Nintendo says VC will get the games, and it gets a few here and there. They say it just to get you excited for a bit.

  2. You’re reading this in the wrong way and jumping to conclusions. The line that reads “according to Natsume, which has also confirmed it has no further Game Boy, Game Boy Color, NES or SNES games heading to 3DS Virtual Console”, means that NATSUME won’t release any more titles for the mentioned consoles on the VC, it doesn’t mean Nintendo or other publishers will stop doing so (with the exception of Gameboy games which may actually stop being released), however other publishers and Nintnedo will continue to release games for NES, GBC and SNES on the VC.

  3. Just more evidence that the 3DS lifespan is nearing it’s end.
I can’t believe how few games there are on the virtual console. Like with the NES. There’s over 600 licensed games on the NES alone, and well over 700-800 if you count the unlicensed games. So, it’s ridiculous how few games are actually available on virtual console.

  4. Well, I hate to shit on Nintendo but what a bunch of idiots. It costs them NOTHING to put these games out, NOT A CENT, yet they decided to not focus on Virtual Console at all this generation. The line up of games is pretty crap across 3DS and Wii U.

Theres also no hardware restrictions here either, I can run most SNES games at fullspeed and perfect sound via the BlargSNES homebrew application on 3DS, and if they got DK64 running perfectly on Wii U VC, they shouldnt have issues running anything else because DK64 is very tough to emulate.

Again, hate to say it, but the people in charge of the Virtual Console department are bunch of idiots; they’re sitting on a goldmine with the first 2 pokemon games alone.

    1. Well, I hate to shit on your rant there but it actually costs Nintendo a little more than a cent to make a game available on the virtual console.

First they need to make sure the legal rights are in line and in proper order for release. Third party negotiations can be quite an undertaking and cost more than the return on game sales.

Next they need to be play tested on the emulator running on the 3ds. The play testes don’t work for free and sometimes come across bugs in the system that paid programmers need to address.

Lastly they need to make sure the servers stay up and running; storing the game digitally and having it readily available for everyone around the world to download costs some money too.

It’s pretty easy to call the people who don’t give you what you want idiots, but many variables need to be taken into account when they make their decisions. At the end of the day, it’s a business and their jobs could be resting on one bad costly decision.

  6. If 3DS virtual console downloads and account doesn’t carry over to NX. I’ll never support Nintendo ever again. I will not buy games over a third time.

NintenD’OH! needs to set up a cloud system so if the NX doesn’t use the same hardware, transferring data between vastly different infrastructures won’t be an issue.
