Nintendo 3DS: The Nintendo 3DS Will Have Automatic Firmware Updates

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has stated that the Nintendo 3DS will feature automatic firmware updates to continuously provide new features to the console and also thwart the rampant piracy that had plagued the Nintendo DS.

“The main thing we want to do is offer players new features whenever possible.”

  1. Smart. When they update to stop piracy, there’ll be awesome new features in the update pirates can’t refuse. Clever, Nintendo.

  2. Can’t wait to here about all the 3DSs getting bricked because the system was interrupted during a major firmware update.

    1. Do you mean as a system is on the move, it could potentially move into a wireless network long enough to start a firmware update, but then lose the signal before it could finish? I would think that that wouldn’t be a problem. The old firmware wouldn’t be deleted until the new one is completely downloaded.

      1. There’s two features SPOT PASS & STREET PASS, if your out and about then its Street Pass doing all the communication, I doubt this mode can download firmware because if your on the move, there is no time to download.

Spot Pass on the other hand, is active when the 3DS is in the charging cradle and in sleep mode (like what was shown at the end of the video demo.) I think this is where automatic firmware updates will take place since it will be stationary.

  3. It’s really just for piracy. Since wireless can be turned off I suppose that can be a problem to an extent…
The only thing that could allow perfect piracy would be a custom firmware. We’ll see.

  4. I don’t see how piracy should affect me, considering I don’t pirate. I know about PS2 pirating (in some countries it’s impossible to buy an original PS2, in fact buying an original game is discouraged by the owners. They mainly use it for renting.) but I didn’t know there was even pirated Wii games and DS games (knew about R4 though for a while) until we bought a DS game off E-Bay and it only worked on our Lite, and we found out it was pirated. So unless your one of those [bleeps] that sell these stuff at full game price, then you should not be affected. Oh and might I add that the 3DS looks EPIC!

The same thing happened to me, man. I bought MP Hunters off of Ebay, and tried it on my DSi, but it didn’t work. I knew something was wrong when I opened the package. The box was not a DS Game Box are all, and there were spelling errors ON THE BOX! I’m not talking about one or two misspelled words, they were in another language altogether, if not complete gibberish. When I reported it to PayPal, I was told to mail it back to get a complete refund from PayPal. So, I did, and you know what happened? They ruled in favor of the sender. I’ve never been back to Ebay or PayPal since. The package returned to my house 3 months later, so now I’m out like 20 bucks and I’m stuck with a non-working forgery.

  5. Here’s how it will go…
it will be hacked, surprisingly quickly. The hacks will stop the updates from being automatic and will allow you to install new features without undoing the piracy…

history repeats itself gentlemen, and unhackable it impossible…
