Nintendo 3DS: The Only Disappointing Thing About My Nintendo 3DS Console

As the majority of you are aware I was sent a Nintendo 3DS console on Tuesday and have since had plenty of time to relish in the 3D aspect of the console and fiddle around with the settings to my hearts content. The console is not only revolutionary but it’s also ridiculously fun and I’m adamant that you will all feel the same.

With any piece of new hardware there’s always disappointment; whether it be the launch titles available for a console, the pricing or the lack of features. In the Nintendo 3DS’ case it’s the lack of a messaging system. Yes, you read that right. You can’t send messages to any of your friends on your friends list. This would have been acceptable a few years ago, but in 2011 it really isn’t.

I have absolutely no idea why Nintendo decided to neglect this rather important feature. Yes, you can set a status message but you can not directly send a message to a friend. A huge oversight on Nintendo’s part considering the inclusion of community applications such as Street Pass etc. Hopefully Nintendo will see fit to resolve this issue with a future firmware update.

  1. removing the messaging service is not like its going to ruin the console
i bare used the friend codes on my wii and dsi and both are still good systems

  2. My guess is that they’ll include it in an update (if they know what’s good for them, at least)

They should bring back Pictochat or something, that was awesome. They could at least do something similar to the Wii’s messaging system.

  3. I doubt but also wish they left it our because they were working on some kind of video call type feature. As I said, I doubt it but that would just make the console 3x better for me (maybe more for others cept no one i know is buying one XD)

  4. well that is why Nintendo sent you the 3DS. Now that 300,000 people saw this, so will Nintendo.

I hope to see Nintendo sends a update for this! :D

  5. Meh. Doesn’t affect me. The Wii message board sucks anyway. And you need wi-fi to even use it, so why not just use the internet on your 3DS and e-mail them or something?

  6. I’m guessing that people who can afford a 3DS can afford a cell phone, therefore eliminating the necessary for a messaging system

  7. I think Nintendo should re-add Pictochat, but with the ability to use the cameras as a webcam.

    That would epic.

  8. I agree with all of the comments it will most likely be part of a future firmware update.and the neccessity for the messaging service isn’t that big because most people have cell phones.if they do make a messaging application for the 3DS it will likely be a pictochat with face-time
(add-on: recording of a full 3D chat from biggening to end)
    (also AR cards in chat)

  9. Well as MigSantiago said, you will alredy hace facebook and twitter through the internet browser. From all of my friends, only 2 are to get a 3DS…till Christmas. So, I won’t need any messaging feature for a while. I’m also shure that some kind of update will include messaging later.

  10. Nintendo just can’t win with online stuff. I used to hate friend codes but now I don’t really mind them. Specially since the 3DS will only have one friend code<3 I don't really go online much anyways though. I would like if they would make the online experience for things more pleasurable and not like Nintendo is watching to make sure you don't swear towards someone. They need to pull that big thorny stick out of their asses and realize that a lot of people now days want online gaming.

  11. It doesn’t matter for me whether or not you can send messages….
By me most people still consider nintedo to be a kiddy company (really dumb ikr) and favour a sony console over a ds.. The same goes for the the 3ds.. not much people are interested at all (shame…)
    so… tis isn’t a problem….
This really sucks but i betcha that they might try to link the 3ds to FBook or Myspace etc via a system update much like how you could share photos to your Fbook acc with a system update

  12. I am almost positive that NIntendo has previously mentioned there is a sort of online Pictochat preinstalled in the 3DS.

  13. Kotaku talked about it a while ago. I’m 99% sure it’ll be part of the big-ass May firmware update where 90% of the good features on the system are coming into use.

  14. although a messaging system would be awesome i honestly dont think i would be using it very much sense i already talk to all my friends on my cell phone and on xbox live, and besides the new 3d gaming is the selling point for me i just wanna be able to play zelda and mario cart in 3d ;D

  16. at least you can track what your friends play, it’s annoying on the Wii when you can’t even tell if a friend’s on or not

  17. well like stated above, there’ll be internet to send messages, hopefully some built in Facebook connectivity like the DSi, not to mention games with voice chat. If Pictochat makes a comeback as a hopeful online feature (otherwise it’ll still be quite pointless) there’s that too. Personally I’d give up messaging for an upgraded internet browser with youtube if given the option

  18. I’m betting it will be in an update, wither in May with the big update or later. I mean, most of the online features aren’t around until that big update in May, so maybe they are keeping all online details off until then.

  19. It’s not a “texting” or messaging device. That’s what your mobile phone is for… open your eyes, kids. It’s a gaming and entertainment system, not a communications device.

  20. Well, the only reason we have anything to complain about is that we have an excellent hardware manufacturer and software producer we can expect a lot from. They have good reason to listen to their customers’ (en masse) requests. This’ll be my first DS and I’d love to have Pictochat. I think messaging will probably come with the update.

  22. Look, the messaging won’t be available till MAY!!! my friend works for nintendo (i.e. he has a test one already) and he said that the update in may will allow online stuff, also they might block twitter and facebook etc. because it’s game system not a computer or mini laptop,

    ps…

…in case of fire, exit building before tweeting about it!

  23. yayy lol im on meh 3ds browser now,i rlly think there shld be a message system, partly because not every 1 has a phone and i can never find my phone lol id be epic,i rlly hope so fingers crossed! i hope they make it like texting!
