Nintendo 3DS: Nintendo Respond To The Nintendo 3DS Black Screen Of Death Errors

A few Nintendo 3DS owners appear to be experiencing a system error that renders the Nintendo 3DS temporarily unusable and generally requires a reboot to get the console working properly again.

Here’s the official fix for the problem direct from Nintendo themselves:

“Our recommendations are that if anyone is experiencing any problems with their Nintendo 3DS console, we recommend that in the first instance they download and install the latest system update, now available online.

“If the problems still persist we recommend they contact their local Nintendo Customer Service centre to investigate the problem.”

  1. Yea when i was playing the 3ds at best buy this happened and they tried to blame me for trying to steal it but they relized it was a system error, thank goodness too! Nintendo 3DS rocks!

  2. Not even a vague apology? Many people were already on the fence about buying a 3DS, with all the setbacks and game delays, but now this? I hope Nintendo considers that the day-1 buyers may be feeling burned, at this point.

I played my cousin’s 3DS, yesterday, and I’m feeling more and more ok with not owning one for a while.

    1. I’m not sure that it’s actually affecting that many people. I know I haven’t had any problems with my review unit which I’ve had for over three weeks. It will be interesting to see just how many people are/were affected by this error.

      1. No kidding. Some kind of number would be clarifying, but I’m fairly certain it’s in their best interests to cover this up as much as possible. XD

Don’t get me wrong, though, I’m scooping one up right as the big, first-party titles come out (in September, I think it was?).

  3. ahhhh 3ds not working!!! imma get it once they update it so theres no bugs in the future. they did this w/ the ds ( they took 4 generations to get it right) and the wii remotes. so im gonna wait. heard it was good though!

    1. There was a firmware update a couple of days ago. As I say I haven’t had a problem with my console which I’ve had for over three weeks : )

  5. I just hit that black screen thingy earlier today – it’s not that bad as it’s quickly fixed again by just restarting the console. But anyway, I had this well after applying the latest update, so it’s not fixed yet.

  6. After losing a fight on Street Fighter, I pressed start to continue and reselected my character, only to be then made to sit in front of a black screen for about 10 full seconds, just as I realise somethings wrong the systems says I need to enables wireless? (That didn’t make any sense to be, considering what I was doing) This screen stayed there for about another 10 seconds then I got the “Black screen of death” seen above.

I should also note that it took a couple of tried for the system to actually power on after that, and when it did (after maybe 2-3- tries) I heard the audio but both screens were black! I fiddled with the 3D slider and after a few secs everything was normal.

This was after the system update. I hope it gets fixed. :(

  7. Haven’t had any problems since I got it, and all the people I’ve seen who’ve had this problem either said they hadn’t updated yet, or they didn’t say. If you ask someone who had this problem, most likely it’ll be before they updated.

  8. People blow these issues way out of proportion. So you got a few black screens. In most cases you’ve probably had it once, maybe twice. It’s not the end of the world.

They’ll sort it eventually. I’ve not experienced this once in over a month. Innovative tech is always gunna need tweekin’.

  9. hmm… it was annoying, (even though i got in a lot of trouble at best buy) the problem was solved in turing it off and on once and then a second time and bingo, then they made me leave before i could finish playing face raiders, :*(

  11. Sometimes I get the screen, during AR games if I use it long enough it just gets a still image or something. I can get out of it, but whenever I access some other form of camera function I’ll get the screen. Works fine other than that though

  13. i was going get one one x_x i had the 250 dollers in my hand when all of a sudden GIANT ALIENS CAME AND KILLED EVRYONE.. lol not. but i was going to buy it but i didnt because we needed to pay other important stuff. i made a huge sacrafice. and i fell good for doing that :p

  14. I’ve had the screen twice, the majority of users from what I’ve seen online have reported it AFTER the update. Calling it Black screen of death is a bit misleading as all you need to do is switch the console off and back on again, it’s just annoying when you’e near the end of a mission on Ghost recon when it happens (both times! >_<)

    1. I think it’s a brilliant console and I’ve been thoroughly impressed with it so far. The 3D without glasses aspect is absolutely mind-blowing and Pilotwings Resort is a great game. Can’t wait to get my hands on the next big titles!

  18. I got the black screen of death one too many times, so I decided to exchange my 3DS for a different one at Gamestop.

I got the black screen a whole bunch on my system; More than five times. When I got it from the menu screen trying to open Face Raiders, I knew there was something wrong.

One of my friends gets the black screen a lot, and the top half of his system is a little loose, as was mine. Another one of my friends never got the black screen (I don’t know if the top half of his system is loose).

The new 3DS I got has a tight upper half and it hasn’t frozen yet.
