Nintendo 3DS: Nintendo Of America President Says Nintendo Didn’t Rush The 3DS To Market

Nintendo of America president has told online gaming publication Kotaku that Nintendo didn’t release the Nintendo 3DS to market before it was ready. Many have speculated that the system was rushed to launch to combat Nintendo’s lower-than-expected fiscal earnings, hence why the system didn’t launch with a killer app such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and why the Nintendo 3DS eShop wasn’t available at launch. What do you think? Was the system rushed to launch, or did Nintendo release it at the right time?

“The system did not launch earlier than planned,” he stated. “We thought there would have been a tighter gap between launch and the first network update.”

In any case, he argued, both issues should no longer be a concern for potential customers.

“When we launched, we had a fantastic day one and a very strong week one,” he explained.

“We talked to consumers. Consumers were highly satisfied with the device. They loved the built-in applications. They loved the game experiences. We had high levels of awareness. We had high levels of intent-to-purchase.

“But when we started talking to consumers who were aware or interested, but hadn’t yet bought, they told us two things: first, I need a big Nintendo franchise for our purchase. The second thing was I need the network to be up. I need the connected experiences to be there.

“So now we jump to where we are,” he continued. “We’re going to be launching Ocarina. We’re going to follow with a steady drumbeat of Star Fox and Kid Icarus and two Mario titles and the Luigi title. I think we’ve got that issue not only identified but addressed.”

    1. Battery can live with all apps ON like.. 3-4 hours… Without nothing, like 8hrs… If that’s not enough, i don’t see problem to have your charger around.. otherwise, i recommend to buy battery packs, they are big, but not heavy, and will make ypour 3DS to look different, sometimes cooler xD

  1. I hope they lower it cause i rreaalllyyy want the wii U to be 250 but i doubt it. but 325 dollars at the most

    1. I fell out of my chair laughing. The Wii U is 3 times better than the Wii, so there’s not a chance in hell that it will be the same price the Wii was at launch. The actual price will be around $400 to $450.

      1. Considering that the WiiU will be competing with $200-$300 PS3’s and 360’s, I doubt it will exceed $350. Since it will be on par, if not slightly better, than the other systems, similar pricing is logical. And when you factor in that the PS3 cost $400 several years ago, and that the level of technology has increased while the cost to make that level of technology has decreased, a price of $400 or more just doesn’t make sense. Especially not from Nintendo’s standpoint, where they will want to retain as many of the Wii users as possible; charging that much money for the next console would be a good way to quickly lose most of the casual players who purchased a Wii for the combination of its simplicity and lower price (compared to the other systems available)

        1. I hope you’re right! $400 would be a bit much, I’m hoping for that $299, to match Sony as they did with the Vita matching 3DS. I think $249 is low though, would be nice, hopefully they don’t consider $399 as keeping it under $400.

  2. We need a new battery with a longer duration that can be purchased separately cause i’ts hard to afford a new 3DS for the battery.. That’s all. The price is a little high, but here in Brazil i bought mine for almost 500 dolars cause we have high taxes.

  3. They can say whatever they want but it’s obvious it was rushed. Should have worked on battery life and screen issues before releasing it. Let’s hope they don’t do the same with the new console.

      1. If you close your 3DS, and then open it, you will see two lines (one at each side). That’s because of the edges of the lower screen are touching the upper screen.

        1. i only have that issue with mine if i push down on the top screen more then normal, if its in the standard position with on slight pressure (in a pocket for example) mine is fine.
Never the less, bit of a flaw but not a major one unless you are putting excessive pressure on the top (which you should never do anyway).

          1. Not true. I bought mine at launch and it already has _scratches_. All from having it with me in my pocket while walking. And I’ve barely used it. Didn’t buy a game until OoT3D launched. So unless Nintendo did this on purpose, It was too early. I better get a new damn console. hrmf

            1. You can prevent further scratching and the forming of lines by putting a piece of cloth between the two screens when you close it.

Doing it since day 1 and the lines have yet to show up.

  4. i love nintendo and my 3DS and the games they’ve announced, but it was rushed out faster than a dog making retching noises at a brand new carpet. i love it and it is my favorite handheld… but it was rushed but im fine iwth it being early.

  5. I’m sending mine in for repairs… Due to a major flaw… My bottom screen injures my top screen when closed.

Significant design oversight? Or did they rush the system?

*shrugs* – sucks too, because I can’t play OOT for 3 weeks. :(

    1. i take mine everywhere, and i keep it in my pocket all the time, and i have never had any problems, no scratches or lines, just put a screen protecter on, they cost like $5 bucks and, if you put them on right, don’t come off unless you want them to

  6. I feel the 3DS had a good launch. I was okay with the price, but my concern was the games. The battery is short but why complain about that when there is a Nyko battery pack? I might get that. I love my 3ds.

Most system launches don’t have great starts so I am not worried.

  7. I dont think the battery is as bad as people make it out to be. I’m sure I got 5 or 6 hours on OOT with the 3D turned on last night.

My main problem is Nintendo showing off a lot of the games for launch. Then a launch window. That’s now closed and we still don’t have Starfox or Kid Icarus.
