Nintendo Wii U: Miyamoto Says It’s ‘Not Our Goal’ To Become The Number One Online Gaming Company

Shigeru Miyamoto has told MTV that he believes it’s important for Nintendo to provide a good online experience with the Wii U. Nintendo has been criticised in the past for its sub par online functionality, but the company are hoping to change that with the forthcoming Wii U. What type of online functionality would you like to see Nintendo include in the Wii U?

“We’re not going to sit here and say that our goal is to become the number one online gaming company, because that’s not our goal.”

He added that Nintendo understand that its consumers like to play online games and the fact that the Wii U has a browser “suggests that obviously internet and internet connectivity is going to be very important for the system.”

“There are opportunities to take advantage of online to expand a local, same-room multiplayer experience by connecting that to the internet and making new types of play that way.”

“Also by having the smaller screen, being able to go online and perhaps see what game your friend is playing or see what TV they’re watching, I think there’s a lot of possibilities for how you could use that. Certainly internet functionality is something that will be important for the system.”

“We have introduced Miis to the world and everyone will hopefully have their own Mii, so obviously I think there’s possibilities along those lines there.”

And I will say that this is a system that will have a great deal of appeal for its online connectivity. A key word for Nintendo in the online sphere has been creating an experience that’s comfortable for all players, so we’ll still look at that and stick to our idea of trying to create an online experience that’s welcoming to everyone.”

  1. He shouldn’t be throwing negative comments like that around. Granted, I get what he’s saying, but people take that stuff out of context often. Also, saying “oh, we don’t want to be #1 for this or that” is a bad attitude. You should, in life as well as business, strive to be #1 in EVERYTHING. It should be your goal to be the best at everything you do. Whether or not that goal is realistic or not doesn’t matter, it’s the strive and effort you put into it that matters. With this comment, he makes it APPEAR as if online gaming is just a “oh, that would be nice, but whatever” notion for the company…. which looks bad.

    1. Its not negitive, its open, his not saying that a good online format isn’t the goal, he just admits its not going to be the No.1 in online gaming and that isn’t the goal. PC gaming will always be the best for online gaming, thats not the say console gaming hasn’t improved and become much better and very good in its own right, but PC functionality online is superior. I feel that he is referencing to that, if he isn’t, my mistake, sorry.

Also, that image creeps me out so much, please no more :(

      1. It doesn’t matter.

Marketing 101: You never point out your weaknesses. Ever. You focus on your strengths, and you talk up your weaknesses as much as possible.

Openly admitting to not having sights set on being the best put a message out there of “Well, we’ll give it a shot, but whatever happens happens.” That’s not a good message to send. You want to send a message of “We’re here to kick ass and take names!” He definitely isn’t doing that right now. Not even close.

        1. He is simply saying he is not going to compete with steam, world of war craft battle net, or any other online gaming presents. They will let those guys come to wii and battle off psn and live for them. This also encourages people like the face book creator to make a better or more relevant network. Not every one cares about achievements.

This is like netgear a hardware maker saying they are not competing against my space and Facebook.

Marketing 101 know your place and excel in it.

          1. He’s simply stating that he as well as all of Nintendo are to listening to everybody. Would you rather have them boast all time and then do half ass crappy products *Cough* *Cough* Sony President *Cough*

        2. His not pointing out a weakness, saying “we aren’t aiming to be No.1 in this section” isn’t saying “we are going to be lacking”. They have stated their online capabilities will rival/be comparable to PSN and XLive, and this line supports that.
Being competitive and strong is not the same as being No.1 and again, they are both very different from saying “This is going to be our weakness”. No where in the article does he imply that online gaming will be the WiiU weakness.

  2. He needs to stop talking and hire someone to be the front man. He tends to say things that make you wonder if he knows what he is doing. The aim is to bring a positive spin on the WiiU…. not to put doubt in your minds.

    1. Sounds like you want him to lie or hide the truth.

This is why people don’t like Sony and ms pr. It gets the hype going then they just disappoint with bad products.

I’m glad these guys are up front. Sony should copy that.

  3. I don’t think there was anything wrong with what he’s saying. I feel that he’s always pretty honest when it comes to his own thoughts about Nintendo.

Off topic, that is a creepy lady.

  4. This does not bode well with me. It’s like they’re saying right up front, “Don’t expect much from our online service, ’cause we’re not even going to TRY to compete with our competitors.” All this tells me is that they aren’t even trying. Why should I take you seriously, Nintendo, when you aren’t taking the “giving our customers the best experience” motto seriously. They’re admitting to not caring about their customers and only care about the money, so they’re gonna do the BARE MINIMUM like they always have, because they know that us fanboys will eat it up anyway… *sigh* Sometimes I hate being a Nintendo fanboy, and Lord knows I’ll buy whatever they dish out, ’cause I can’t live without my core first party Nintendo franchises. :/

    1. your comment really threw off when you said “nintendo admits they hate there fans and only cares about money” wow man you need to chill! how you get all that from what nintendo said in this article!

      1. Your comment really threw me off when you said that I said, “Nintendo hates their fans.” Please do not put words into my mouth by misquoting me. Read what I wrote again and tell me that I EVER said anything about Nintendo “hating” anyone. Also, your reading comprehension skills are matched only by your grammar. ;)

I do not need to “chill.” I was perfectly within a calm mind when writing my original post, thank you very much. :|

        1. How do you know if they’re saying that they’re not trying. If you read, it says they want to have a good online experience for everybody. The developers decide what kind of online the games will have. Jeezzzz if Nintendo so called never tries, there would’nt be all these fantastic remakes, no kid icarus, no luigi’s mansion 2 etc etc

          1. The pure and simple fact that Nintendo relies so heavily on rehashed IP’s over and over and over (AND OVER) again is a testament to Nintendo’s laziness and complacency. And the few new IP’s they DID make (Xenoblade, Pandora’s Tower, and Last Story) they aren’t even bothering to bring to North America. Instead, they’re taking the easy way out and remaking old games over and over again, and creating sequels to existing IP’s. People need to realize that Nintendo ISN’T trying right now. They are doing, as I said before, the BARE MINIMUM they have to in order to spend the least amount of money, selling for the highest possible price point to their target market, while still making a profit.

The online experience WON’T be a “good experience for everybody.”

For one, they’re on record stating they have absolutely no desire to create an achievement system. That should be STANDARD in an online infrastructure. Microsoft has them, Sony has them, Valve has them, for God’s sake, APPLE, of all companies, has them! And don’t even bring up that they “don’t matter” like others have argued against me with. They might not matter to YOU, but they DO matter to a very large subset of gamers, and if they’re creating — in your own words — a “good experience for EVERYONE,” then they wouldn’t be ignoring such a large playerbase who enjoy getting more from their games via achievements.

Secondly, these are the exact same promises Nintendo made for the 3DS as well, and one of the reasons why I purchased one on release day via my pre-order. Nintendo promised a lot of things, stating that they would be taking online seriously starting with the 3DS. Yeah, well, look how THAT has turned out. It’s BARELY better than the DSi, and in some ways, it’s WORSE!

You cannot honestly expect me to believe that Nintendo is taking any of this seriously. There’s absolutely NOTHING from Nintendo’s past history that gives me ANY hope at all that they will be taking the core crowd seriously this time around. All Nintendo has done is make promises they never deliver. I’m sure we all remember when they first unveiled the Wiimote, and how “revolutionary” it was supposed to be. They showed off videos of “perfect one-to-one motion,” among other things, and that STILL hasn’t happened yet — not as they originally showed it anyway.

Nintendo is remaining one step behind the competition again. They may have won this generation by taking all the money from the “casuals,” but as we’ve seen, casuals don’t buy nearly as many games as the core players, and because no one was buying third party games for the Wii, third party support turned to dust after the first year. We as Wii owners are lucky to be thrown a bone anymore. All we have to look forward to now is Kirby and Zelda Skyward Sword, both first party games of already existing IP’s. Riddle me this: when the Wii was first unveiled, third parties were jumping over themselves to get their hands on it in the beginning. So far, this is the same thing happening now with the Wii U. Where is Nintendo’s and third party’s promise that they won’t abandon the platform the moment PS4 and Xbox3 come out just as they did with the Wii?

You can do whatever you want, but I’m sick and tired of getting burned from Nintendo. I’ll be waiting a year after its release before even THINKING of picking up a Wii U. I’m going to make sure this investment doesn’t get me burned like the original Wii did. I refuse to be Nintendo’s pawn any longer. I’m sick of the same-old-same-old from Nintendo.

I’ve been a “Nintendo fanboy” since I was old enough to hold an NES controller. I’ve been a follower of Nintendo since gaming first took hold in the U.S., and have stayed with them all the way up ’till now. But I will NOT accept another “Wii Generation” again. All I have to say to Nintendo is “Get your act together, or I’ll drop you for SONY completely.”

My PS3 already gets four times the use as my Wii right now. If the Wii U doesn’t offer something above and beyond what I can already get RIGHT NOW on the PS3 (or what others get on the Xbox 360), then there is no point in the Wii U’s existence other than to be a platform for more Nintendo rehashes, remakes, and sequels.

What it all comes down to is, ultimately, I just want a reason to purchase a Wii U when I’ve already got both a Wii and a PS3 right now. All I want to know is what Nintendo will offer in the next generation that I can’t already get with what I’ve got NOW. Nintendo is going to have to work hard in order to get people like me, who are already satisfied with what we’ve got, to want to buy a Wii U. And no, another Zelda rehash isn’t going to cut it.

My two cents, anyway. Take it for what it’s worth. ($0.02 :P )

              1. Your reading comprehension is about as good as that other guy’s. If you actually read all of what I wrote, you wouldn’t have to ask me why I’m here. Also, the results of Nintendo’s own studies and surveys from the Nintendo Channel show that the “millions of other people” who bought a Wii don’t actually play it that often.

  5. anyone remember Phantasy Star Online for gamecube? Nintendo did a good job with that MMORPG but never continued any more games like it

  6. Online web browser means great online. DSi, Wii, and 3DS all have it and by logic they have amazing online…. Because 360 doesn’t have a web browser, by logic in this article the online must be bad…. >.> /sarcasm

Seriously though, how bout we start talking about COMMUNICATION between players cross platform. Even communication with players on your own friends list. With the 3DS we have 1 global friends list and can see when people are online however we can’t talk to each other. Another thing is when people are online you have to dig through your friends to get to them and while the system does notify you when somebody came online, it doesn’t tell you who.

Fix these problems THEN start talking about taking it a step further!

  7. I’d like to pick a gamertag/name and not have friend codes. Something like achievements/trophies would be nice too. The ability to ask someone to be your friend while playin them. I’ve had some good races with people on Mario Kart, nice n close but can’t race them again as I don’t know them or get into contact.

  8. Why settle for best online gaming company when you can just be the best gaming company? Ofcourse nowadays that online market is high necessity. But I trust Nintendo knows what their doing. It’s just a matter of focus. With the Wii U there should be a good balance of everything it has to over from 1st party favorites, to fresh 3rd party titles, to online capabilities all the way down to the controller’s potential. So no matter how this news is received by others I feel Nintendo will have alot in store. They’d have to screw up alot on order gor this system to fail and I’m sure they’re wise enough not to let that happen.

  9. To me, they don’t have to be number 1 in online gaming, all I care is that they make a great service. I know they are doing their to please everyone. Just get rid of hackers/cheaters and I am good. I can live without voice chat on some games, mainly due to swearers.
