Nintendo Wii U: Mario Producer Talks Super Mario For Wii U

Wired recently received the opportunity to sit down with Yoshiaki Koizumi, who has been involved in all of the 3D Mario games since Super Mario 64, and discuss his thoughts on Wii U and the next Mario game. Surprisingly Koizumi confessed that he had only just learned about Wii U at this years E3, which suggests that there may not be a Mario title appearing on the console at launch. Would this surprise you?

“When I think about the two screens being used at the same time, it seems like an interesting opportunity to allow us to create a console game where two people are playing at the same time but can’t see each others’ screens,” he said. “It’s certainly an interesting approach, but I have to clarify that it’s not something that we’re working on just yet.”

Imagine one player working as Mario while the other is Luigi. The two could work against each other or with one another. Of course, Nintendo could also accomplish such an idea with online cooperative play. This idea would work great in a number of different games, though it would work even better if the system supported more than one Wii U controller.

  1. This is great, I think they should go back to the original “Mario Bros.” arcade game style of play, where you are basically fighting each other to win each level.

  2. Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i hope it can support 2 wii U controllers at once.

  3. I think according to his last statement, devs are being told don’t design games with using more than 1 WiiU controller in mind.

  4. Hey Yoshiaki Koizumi, go demand that Nintendo sell Wii U controllers by themselves and have 4 remote support!!!

  5. PFFFT JESUS FIGHT AGAINST EACH OTHER LAME, IF ITS LIKE MARIO ARCADE THAN IT WILL BE AN EPIC FAIL. LATELY MARIO GAMES HAVE SUNK OF ANY CREATIVENESS. TAKE MARIO 3DS ITS JUST MARIO 64+GALAXY+MARIO 3 AND TANOOKI SUIT CAN’T TURN 2 STATUE OR FLY=FAIL , UNLESS UR A HARDCORE IDIOT.

    1. who in nintendo’s sake cares. this is an early announcement and besides, how do you think it would be possible to fly in 3d? answer that or “you must die”.

  6. I’d love to compete against a friend on those race courses we’ve seen in every 3D Mario game as of yet. Lasting appeal of that feature aside, I’d love to do it.

Though I could see Nintendo just having the 2nd player playing with a Wii-compatible controller, I’d love to see a second Wii U controller as at least an option. They’re already encouraging people to go outside and meet other gamers w/ StreetPass, so they could easily use that same approach to get people to go over to friends’ houses with their Wii U controller.

  7. Wow so this game will be a 3d platform area in hd. I think this may be “Super Mario Galaxy 3™” or “Super Mario HD Land™”.
