Nintendo Says Zelda Wii U Will Use Motion Control

Legend Of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has told the Official Nintendo Magazine that future Zelda games will use motion control. Aonuma told the magazine that he just can’t see the series going back to using traditional buttons to control the game. We should hear a lot more about Zelda for Wii U at next years E3 event in June.

“I honestly think we cannot go back to button controls now, so I think that these controls will be used in future Zelda titles, too.”

        1. Nice. After playing Skyward Sword I’ve adapted to the motion controls; they’re great like frosted flakesಠ-ಠ!
But yeah, hoping to hear from Nintendo if the Wii U Zelda would have the motion control option in it. Glad to hear that it will.

    1. LOL YA KISSASS NINTY FAGS SMH YET YA BASEHED IPHONE FOR NOT HAVING BUTTONS. SKYWARD SWORD FUCKING SUCKED NO WONDER IT LOST TO SKYRIM. FUCK MOTION I HAVE A KINECT THANK U VERY MUCH. 1. Wow someones pissy because the Wii thrashed his beloved 3shitty and Skyward Sword has dominated every 360 Exsclusive to date

withought nintendo you woudlnt have a Xbox so just suck it up and accept that Nintendo are the MASTERS of the gaming industry and no matter how many Halos and gears of war and Forza games you get Mario, Link and and Donkey Kong will always be 10 million miles ahead laughing at your pathetic fanboy rage

        grow up lmao

        1. hey were all gamers here! Don’t hate! I have all three systems and I like them equally. Each system has something unique and awesome that the other systems can’t duplicate.

    1. doubt it, because just as was the case in skyward sword, the puzzles will be based on motion controlls, and wouldnt work if u had the option to switch to normal

      1. He said..he THINKS… this doesnt exactly mean “we will never go back to buttons” or ” Wont ever use them again”

either way im happy, but this has been said before in numerous ocassions. old news is old.

      1. If Zelda was meant to be played with motion controls, why is it that all but one of the games used regular, reliable controls?

        1. words cannot describe this facepalm…

Ever had a reasonable motion-controlled NES game?!?! NO!
The controls and possibility with buttons only is very limited. The controls of Skyward Sword were awesome. not perfect. But with a little bit of improvement, Zelda WiiU can be perfect in therms of controls.

        2. WHICH ONE???? SKYWARD, PHANTOM, OR SPIRIT TRACKS??? ALL HAD MOTION CONTROLS….AND DONT SAY THE DS HAS BUTTONS..THE WII DOES TOO

        3. WHICH ONE???? SKYWARD, PHANTOM, OR SPIRIT TRACKS??? ALL HAD MOTION CONTROLS….AND DONT SAY THE DS HAS BUTTONS..THE WII DOES TOO

    1. I agree with this guy. I enjoyed Zelda more with buttons. I can’t find myself to play more SS because of awkward it is.

      1. aww poor you then! Motion is the best way! open your mind and stop thinking about how you look and instead focus on how much fun you can have!

  1. Sure, a “realistic” zelda with motion control.
But I would also like a caroon-zelda, “Wind Waker 2”, with DS-control on the screen with a stylus but on the Wii U.

          1. sickr ban “peteriuss hater”.He is using my name.Peteriuss hater dont care if u hate me or not nut using other names thats illegal.

                1. you are something more than trolls you are illegals too,you cant use other peoples names you iddiots.now you are in bounch of trouble

                    1. “Hi i’m nick, look at me sucking peteriuss cock, his semen feel so good in my face, so ban peteriuss hater because everytime peteriuss have a butthurt, it mean less cock to suck for me, ban him or i will turn gay, oh wait, i’m gay already, ban him, ban him, for my lover peteriuss”

                      That’s better, don’t you agree?

                  1. its true.he cant use his name thats redicolus,i am sure that gye is familiar.i say he is marcus or some1 else but iam sure that gye looks familliar

                    1. you’re crap writing and use of the english language looks very familiar too peteriuss, whoops i mean nick.

                    2. I don’t waste my time changing names, if i say someone is faggot, i let him know it’s me, not just another gay retard with butthurt.

                2. “It’s my name, give it back or i’m going to cry and spam a lot more with my retard comments while sucking nick dicks hard!!!11111!!!”

Don’t worry guys, it’s all done now.

                  1. “I WANT COCK!!1!1!!1! PETERIUSS COME TO ME AND FUCK ME!!!!112!1!1”

No problem guys, i just translate it into the butthurt translator, here you have the meaning, thank you, it’s part of my job.

            1. Why would anyone NOT HATE you. You have awful grammar, when you are arguing you make the MOST STUPID points that don’t make ANY SENCE and you are treating sickr like your slave. “O, sickr, ban this troll for me because he seems to be winning a argument. O, ban this troll, he hates me, I thought all the 7 billion+ people in the world liked me.

Just try to make some sence kid!

            2. Why would anyone NOT HATE YOU. You have awful grammar, when you’re arguing with someone you make up the MOST STUPID points that are just plain FAIL and you’re treating sickr like your slave. “O, sickr, ban this guy for me because he seems to be winning a argument with me. O, sickr, please ban this guy that doesn’t like me because I thought that all the 7 billion+ people in this world would like me.”

Just try to make some sence kid.

        1. They didn’t say that. They said they were going to be like the console games in terms of gameplay. They can still go back to Wind Waker’s style, though the next Zelda might take the form of A Link To The Past’s style.

  2. The Troll Who Owns A 3DS

jesus christ…the one thing i hated about Skyward Sword that RUINED the game for me is coming back. looks like Assassin’s Creed is now my number one favorite series of all time.

          1. The Troll Who Owns A 3DS

360 and PS3 arnt old style dumb fuck. Nintendo just use retarded gimmicks that soccer mom’s and old people fall for.

            1. fucktard they are old style as they use what the gen before it used. use that fucking brain of yours. what came before is older than what came after you dipshitfucktard. go fuck some troll or something!

              1. The Troll Who Owns A 3DS

the Wii is Old Style then. no HD. No Harddrive. Capacity limit for Wii Shop. Friend Codes. its a piece of shit if you truly look at it. look at the Xbox and PS3 they barely use nothing old. PS3 just uses that shitty Super Nintendo rip off controller.

  3. Hopefully they’ll have an option for motion controls and “traditional” controls because let’s be honest, not everyone is a fan of motion controls. And they have the new controller that could be integrated so well into gameplay, inventory and map kinda stuff.

    1. I agree with you!! I don’t like motion control and it screwed SS for me. I would have liked button controls much more than stupid motion control. At least, Nintendo, leave us the choice!

P.S I liked the motion control on TP much better.

      1. Everything you could do in previous Zelda games, you can’t do in Skyward Sword. There is no way to slash diagonally in previous Zelda games, so to say that Skyward Sword would have worked well with buttons is a farce. I don’t think you really understand this. The game design demands the motion control.

    2. people need to understand that if they go both ways they need to program it in two different ways. all enemies need to react to motion controls as well as button so that means more programming and more animation work as well. do you guys want
1: a short Zelda with two methods of control
2: both but with a longer game but wait another 5 years for a new Zelda
3: just fut up ant take motion controls and get a long Zelda game in 3 years time!

      i go with 3!!!

open your minds a bit and try to enjoy the game you close minded people!!

      1. Um having motion controls and standard controls in one game isn’t that hard. And it doesn’t make the game longer to make (2 years lol you crazy)

Take a looks at the ps3 game MAG. Took 2 weeks to add move support. Game was a full stand alone. Move support didn’t take away anything from the game at all, all it did was add. But having the option for both schemes was better for everyone.

        1. mag doesn’t use swords fights lol its a shooter which means it uses pinter and thats easy. just take the stick and replace it with the pointer and tara!! with Zelda its swords and every move made with a sword needs a set of animation. pls do not talk about stuff you do not know about. i work with animations and 3d modeling and gaming.

        2. Once you’ve played through a few bits of the game, you’ll understand that buttons were not an option for this game design.

Nintendo will never make everyone happy. No use trying. Looks like they’ll lose 25 people’s money, while putting up a good fight for best game thanks to the thousands that totally embraced the motion plus play-style.

      1. how do you know that? i don’t think it will be less than 300$ which i think is cheap for what it can do and has. 350$ is good to

        1. he is telling you that nintendo makes cheap consoles.dont worry about it but i am sure that ps4 and 720 will have a litlle problem with the price

          1. At least you are not so Nintendo Dick Sucker, with comments like
“i am sure that ps4 and 720 will have a litlle problem with the price”
            tell me something.

“you are something more than trolls you are illegals too,you cant use other peoples names you iddiots.now you are in bounch of trouble”
“its true.he cant use his name thats redicolus,i am sure that gye is familiar.i say he is marcus or some1 else but iam sure that gye looks familliar”

Why are you have to make stupid comment like those for helping peteriuss?
He’s a troll, a bad, fucking troll with a bad case of butthurt.

            1. Marcos, the only troll here is you. Seriously, one guy decides to stick up for another poor sap that’s being defrauded and insulted, and now every single time he posts a comment, no matter what it’s about, you immediately just go at him with everything you’ve got for no reason. He never said or did anything to you, and when you’re the one saying things to him like

“Hi i’m nick, look at me sucking peteriuss cock, his semen feel so good in my face, so ban peteriuss hater because everytime peteriuss have a butthurt, it mean less cock to suck for me, ban him or i will turn gay, oh wait, i’m gay already, ban him, ban him, for my lover peteriuss”, or
“I WANT COCK!!1!1!!1! PETERIUSS COME TO ME AND FUCK ME!!!!112!1!1No problem guys, i just translate it into the butthurt translator, here you have the meaning, thank you, it’s part of my job.”

and then you go and call HIM the troll….. if anyone’s, as we all get that you love to say, “butthurt” here, then it’s you.

              1. No.
I just post insulting comment every time someone, in this case nick, post something retarded that i should laugh about.
                For example:
“you are something more than trolls you are illegals too,you cant use other peoples names you iddiots.now you are in bounch of trouble”
                “sickr ban peteriuss hater”
“its true.he cant use his name thats redicolus,i am sure that gye is familiar.i say he is marcus or some1 else but iam sure that gye looks familliar”

He’s a peteriuss, but at least he’s not a fanboy.
Now give me a reason why i SHOULDN’T make fun of both nick and peteriuss.

  4. Welp, one of the mechanics that killed the fun of Skyward sword is coming back and here to stay? Great…just..great..Will the overtly padded level design be making a return, too? Cause i love doing 3-4 meaningless tasks that takethe 30 minutesminutes each before I can enter a dungeon.

  5. stop moaning please. I love Zelda games but will wait until i get some Christmas money to get Skyward Sword (I also still waiting for gba free games news)

    1. Why isnt someone (me) that has actually owned and completed the game allowed to voice their opinion about the control mechanics and level design?

      1. Oh don’t bring up the whole “I’m the victim because I misunderstood people’s admonishment of my meritless opinion” bull. Nobody said you couldn’t say anything. But you’re just not willing to accept the finer points of the mechanics and the level design and instead just belligerently stick to your opinion.

        1. And the finer points of a level design that gad your character perform 3 quests to accomplish one thing would be, what again? Its a lazily done game.

          Spoiler alert:

When link is told to find that damn invisible pirate ship by first getting a map, going to a ship yard, and then ransacking a pirate hideout, only to have link just basically use the dowse ability to shoot wildly into the sea, how is that good level design. It padding. Shameless, almost archaic padding only meant to extend the games length, and not really to tell a story. How a bout when scrapper needed that to grab that pot for you and he, for no reason started you at the beginning of the map so you have to trudge your way through The damn volcano again.

How about the realization that wgen boiled down, the game is nothing more than 3 fetch quests through the same 4 Areas. Oh but this is supposed to be game of the year? Why? What does it do to even deserve this? Deus Ex is amazing. Skyrim changes the field of RPG. Even El Shadai was a great game in and of itself.

Can we all go out of fanboy mode and just comes to terms that this may have been a mediocre Zelda game with motion controls?

          1. Well, someone’s a bit butthurt that they can’t play SS well.

If you seriously think the game is three fetch quests across four areas, you’re either trolling, or stupid (likely both).

Can you go out of troll mode and just come to terms that you’re living in your parents’ basement and will never get laid because you like to troll people on the internet?

      2. You have remarkable resolve… To finish a game that had it’s fun “killed.”

        I couldn’t have done it. If a game loses it’s fun-factor for me, it’s trade-in scrap.

Or maybe you had a little more fun than you let on? ;-)

        1. I finished it because I paid $50 for it. The trade in value was $30. It only makes sense to complete a purchased game before trading it in for a significantly reduced rate. Plus, i cannot fully judge a game until completion. Because i did actually complete it, and didnt flagrantly say it deserves high marks because it has “Zelda” in the title, my opinion of the game becomes more valid.

    1. I am confused too. What I don’t get is how you can play games by streaming it to the touch screen because surely the touch screen is used for the game? But I think that the Wii U tablet has a sensor bar built in to it so you can play Wii Games streamed to it.

      1. Developers will have the option of adding the feature of playing their game on the Wii U controller or not. But if the game requires touch-screen elements while you play it on the TV, then it won’t work. All in all, not every title is going to be able to support playing on the controller itself because of the development.

        1. Here’s what I think could happen: the action, camera-centering and quick item-switching is handled by the Wiimote & Nunchuck, and everything else (maps, menus, special items) uses the Wii U’s controller. Only problem: Lots of people own the Wiimote, but not one w/ motion plus. If they had another package like w/ Skyward Sword it could work.

    1. It actually is.

You know enemies have to be programmed in a special way to react to motion controls? You know, having to make different gestures to avoid their blocks and hit them.

It would be almost impossible to beat one of those enemies using traditional controls. Nintendo would have to program two entirely different games to allow traditional buttons.

  6. »»───(knee)───►

I used to hate motion controls with Zelda…..till I took an arrow to the knee and actually played Skyward Sword. Now I love it. »»───(#knee)───►

  7. I am confused… Motion controls with the Wii U tablet controller? How will that work? Unless they just use the ordinary remote plus.

Anyhow, I agree with the guy who said above that they should have an option for regular controls. I don’t mind either control method, I just like being given choice.

      1. wut would be cool is if they made a strap for the wii U controller so you could strap that on one arm like a shield, hold a wiimote in the other hand like a sword, and then play like that. Then, to switch gear and all that, you could just hold the hand with the u mote up and touch the gear or whatever on the touchscreen and…..
        I’m sounding to unrealistic here, aren’t I?

  8. you button lovers will still get button Zelda on 3DS but for the consoles they will always use motion. if not then that means they are going backwards!

every time i hear them say Zelda WiiU will use Motion i get happier! i seriously do not want to go back to buttons!

  9. PEOPLE! Are you aware of how difficult having the option for BOTH methods is?

You know enemies have to be programmed in a special way to react to motion controls? You know, having to make different gestures to avoid their blocks and hit them.

It would be almost impossible to beat one of those enemies using traditional controls.
NINTENDO WOULD HAVE TO PROGRAM TWO ALMOST ENTIRELY DIFFERENT GAMES TO ALLOW BOTH METHODS!

    1. yeah i said this already and i think people just think its an easy thing to do. some even compare it to as easy as pointer controls hahaha can you believe that!

people need to look at things and not think “oh its easy”. game development is not a walk in the part!

    2. If Nintendo utilized all of their developing divisions, maybe it could be possible to basically make “two different games”. I think sometimes we forget how many studios Nintendo has that make games. Either way I wouldn’t mind, but it’s good to have options. The people who had issues with Skyward Sword would definitely welcome the option. The more people who play Zelda, the better IMO.

      1. you need to know that they will need a lot more people for Zelda WiiU as it will go HD (actually the right word is more polygons and better textures and whatnot) in order for it to come out in 3 years time. now the more people they get on Zelda from other devisions the less games we will get in the end as more work and time needs to be put on every game made. its good with options but sometimes those options are pointless. it will add cost, more people and more time for something that is not worth doing in the end.

if people love Zelda they will get it and learn to adapt to it and if they don’t then they will be missing great games because of their hardheadedness! the more people open their minds the more they can get out of life! not just in gaming.

  10. To be fair Skyward sword has awesome controls but it didnt make the game any better I have been playing it for a fair while now and its been a great game but I think it would have been great even with normal controls. I dont see any reason to keep using motion controls in every game, each game has something new about it, in wind waker it was Toon Link and sailng, majoras mask allowed you to change into new characters throughout the game, TP allowed you to change into a wolf, SS allows the use of motion controls so i would like them to try something new with the Wii U, Zelda is about branching out and pushing the boundries th games will become repetative if motion controls are the main focus still when going forward

  11. I, for one, prefer buttons to motion control. Skyward Sword was good and all, but to me waving my arms around like I’m some mental patient seems like waist of energy when I could be rapidly mashing my thumbs against a controller for the exact same effect.

      1. Again with this? Why can you not accept the fact that motion controls suck?
Do you really always have to say “you don’t have the game”?
We have it and motion controls suck.
Back to the HOLY joypad, please.

        1. it is wrong to presume that people who hate it automatically don’t have the game but that because there a lot of hater out there that do not have the game yet they trash it as if they have played it.

your also doing something wrong in saying he should accept that motion is crap! but tell me how is he going to think its crap when he thinks its good? i can tell you to do the same. why can’t you just accept the fact that motion controls are great!

but its wrong. everybody like what they like but whats more wrong is trashing something you haven’t played or given it a chance

      2. I’ve owned the game since release. I just don’t like the Wii’s controls, just like I hate Kinect and PlayStation Move.

  12. Booo…. I keep trying to get into this game but I feel disconnected due to the motion controls. I also played twilight princess on the gamecube due to its horrible motion controls tossed on it. I was really hoping the motion would be limited to the sword and not replace everything. Oh well the future is for the young.

  13. the article says we should hear more about zelda wii u at E3. LOL i am confident that we won’t :P not a problem though, the zelda franchise should not be rushed. there will be plenty of exciting things to see at E3 2012 to do with nintendo wii u, first party and 3rd party games :D cant wait!!

    1. how is this not real? what more real do you want then the words coming out of Aonumas mouth? this isn’t the first time he says it btw ;)

  14. I hope so. Zelda SS is the only motion controlled game I like.

Tbh, I think Nintendo should focus on the revival of old franchises, new franchises and 3rd party games (software wise) at E3 ’12 instead of new installments in current franchises (Mario, Mario spin-offs, Zelda to name a few).

  15. The best part of this is where it says “Zelda Wii U” which means they are thinking about it! I know it’s a LONG way away and they (they being nintendo) dunno if they are gunna use the graphics from the zelda wii u trial from e3, but still I cant wait a whole 4-5 years for next main Zelda but I will have to!! (There WILL be a 3DS Zelda first, either MM remake or brand new game, or BOTH) its exciting times coming for Nintendo and Zelda :DDDD

  16. Motion controlls are the reason I don’t play The Legend of Zelda anymore, sorry. Honestly it’s just my opinion by in the case of the newer games and consoles, people could deal with the Gamecube over the Wii, honestly they are about the same in terms of hardware and the motion controlls are less accurate than I had hoped for, just my opinion …

  17. EnjoyVideoGamesPlz-Girl

I actually don’t get why this is so surprising, nor why it is considered as “news”.
    Wasn’t it kinda obvious ?

  18. i wonder how, i mean comparing the wii-wiiu controls y dont know how would they do that, in fact i believe ill be something like infinity blade/ocarina of time 3D/skyward sword combination:

    -something like:
    -slashing with the touch screen
-moving with buttons aiming with gyroscope
-solvig some puzzles and mantaining stable on ropes

  19. I highly doubt the motion controls will be major. It will be mostly buttons, with a few motions that do small things in the game. Obviously they aren’t gonna have you swinging a Wii U controller around in one hand :P

  20. I like motion controls but.. i think they should take advantage of the new Wii U controller and 3DS for future titles. Unless he just meant using the gyroscope and stuff on the U controller.

  21. I don’t understand why people don’t like the motion controls in SS. It requires slightly more effort than previous titles and it adds a ton to the combat. To each their own I suppose, but you definitely don’t have to move as much as people say you do.

  22. Oh man this gets me so excited! I just wonder how they will balance using the tablet and the Wii remote. Perhaps they could use the tablet as a shield that you could also select items from and use the remote as the sword? And maybe if you switch to playing it on the tablet screen only the game plays like Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass. Plus this game is going to be in HD and in a new direction? I have a feeling this game will be like if Ocarina of Time and the Elder Scrolls series had a baby that is Zelda Wii U. Not only that but we have an original Zelda coming out on 3DS that could be compatible with this game perhaps? Oh and not to mention the possibility of a Majora’s Mask 3D. What a great time to be a Zelda fan!!!

  23. Alilink (Take My Salt)

I’d rather them find a new form of gameplay with the Wii U controller. I mean, I loved Skyward sword and the motion controls, but I love innovation even more.

But if anything, don’t turn it into another poorly written, semi movie game. I won’t mention any names, but alot of games in the action adventure genre, tend to feel like watching a movie while pressing buttons half the time.

  24. I actually prefer if they continue the motion control scheme. If possible, they should add traditional controls, too, but just regular button pressing is getting a little repetitive. I do not hate traditional controls, I want them to stay, but I do not want them to be the only option. I can understand if you are not into such much physical movement, but 90% of the Wii games do not require a lot of movement. Sometimes, you can “cheat”.

  25. Pingback: Eiji Aonuma no cree que The Legend of Zelda pueda regresar al control por botones

  26. In all honesty i like both Motion and traditional controls for Zelda

I think with the advancement of Hand held consoles now would be a good time to do both styles of gameplay

keep the Motion controls for the Home consoles and also bring out Zelda titles for the 3DS using the Traditional Contol style

that way we get more Zelda titles with both control styles and its Win win for Nintendo and for us Zelda Fans :D

  27. Options please Nintendo, it’s quite clear to see that not everyone likes you shoving motion controls down our throats.

  28. Before anyone starts hating on Nintendo, Im just saying, that Nintendo saved the entire gaming industry of America years ago. So basically, Playstation and Xbox would not exist if Nintendo diddn’t create its characters. Im not saying Nintendo is better than anything, since those things are just OPINION based statements, which don’t really clarify whether what was said is true or false, no matter how many people think the same opinion, its not a fact. I just want to point out one fact, that Nintendo is sort of like the “Mother” (of father) of the gaming industry we know today, despite that it gets “roughed up” by Ps3 and Xbox fanatics.
By the way, why would haters even care to diss out Nintendo anyways? Go play Halo or Skyrim or w.e you guys do when you’re not busy being a graphics whore.
