Sonic Racing Dev Says Racing Genre Needs New Hardware

Sumo Digital’s chief game designer Gareth Wilson believes that the unusually long hardware cycle is holding back the racing genre. Wilson thinks that in order for the genre to flourish, developers need new consoles which can provide both advanced physics and improved graphics.

“We need a new console. Racing games always do well when a new console comes out, and you do a new physics engine and improved graphics. Towards the end of a console cycle it’s always quite hard to push racing games, I think.

“If you’ve got Dirt 1, do you need Dirt 3? If you’ve got PGR3 do you need PGR4? I’m not so sure. It really relies on technology, the racing genre. Maybe more than other genres.”

  1. Hmmm…. notice that as we get closer and closer to E3 developers that are known to be developing for the Wii U keep on saying the same thing… “developers need new consoles which can provide both advanced physics and improved graphics.” It like they are indirectly saying the Wii U is very capable and is more advance then current generation. They still cannot come right out and say how powerful it is… so these hints are all they can give us without pissing off Nintendo that wants to “WOW” us next month.

    1. To be honest, when they say that, it’s pretty ambiguous. They could also be referring to the PS4 or the NeXbox, I’m not trying to knock the Wii U or anything, but the other 2 companies WILL watch the WiiU very closely and there’s a chance that they will out do it in any way they can…but we won’t know yet till E3 just HOW powerful the Wii U is and how the other two will retaliate

      1. You are incorrect. The few developers that have known games in development for the Wii U are the very same developers saying this and are referencing the games in development. I am sure they are not talking about the next consoles from Microsoft and Sony.

        1. All of you are killing gaming because you want better graphics, and then that will cause people not to buy games because they are too expensive.*

          1. yea right, PC is the best for shooters and stratefy games and rpgs and stuff, but i frickin love nintendo and i own a 3ds and am going to buy the wiiu. prolly not when it first comes out tho cuz i dont wanna get screwed over again like i did with the 3ds. (am an ambassador)

      1. are you fucking kidding me dude? thats like wanting microsoft to go bankrupt just to see the fans cry!

  2. The Wii U should be just what you’re looking for then. If Wii U could handle Project CARS in 1080p (which I bleieve it can) then it should be able to handle whatever you can throw at it.
Check it out in 1080p. The soundtrack also kicks ass on this vid.

    1. Fully agree. Like I said… all the haters or those struggling to believe Nintendo can return to the days of making quality hardware will be the ones in shock next month.

      1. [facepalm]

How is he trolling? He’s pissed off at the developers’ excuses, he’s not trolling anyone…

  3. The guy makes a reasonable point. If I go and buy a game that has an older version on the same platform with only slightly enhanced graphics and a much lower price, it only makes sense to pick that one up instead and ignore the later version

    1. So half of the wii u launch games are going to be ignored?

I mean me personally have played most of them on other systems and I’m not shelling out 50/60$ a piece to play them again.

      1. well, technically yes if you already have that exact same game on another system. But what you misinterpreted is that I’m sayin if a game and it’s prequel were both on the SAME system, and the only major difference was just slightly enhanced graphics, then I would not waste my time with the later one because it’s not a major jump in the development.

Let’s use square-enix for example since final fantasy has gotten horrible. They just came out with final fantasy XIII-2. How many people honestly went out to buy it versus buyin the first one?

Because there was no major difference in the two games (besides the incomprehensible story) one would simply buy stick with the first final fantasy, At least that’s what I did anyway. I dunno what you would do.

It just seems like a waste of money to get the same shit all over again.

Oh, and Soul calibur has also fell down this path. It makes me sick to see how poorly Namco has milked that franchise.

  4. Oh cool then ill keep the first Sonic and Sega allstar racing despite the mediocre frame rate and uninspired power ups and ignore this sequel.

  5. I’m a bit of agreeing and disagreeing. I agree as most of the time, the engine they make for the game can only increase with each new generation of console; lighting effects, particle effects, etc. But, I also disagree because you can also work with the engine, as in updating it, for the newer game for the same generation of consoles.

  6. I disagree with his conclusion, but I agree with his thoughts. Racing games are a lot alike. If you buy one, do you really need to buy the next in the series?

However, hardware has nothing to do with it. You buy a new racing game for your new console because it’s a game of a different genre on that console. Then when a new one comes out, you compare the two and decide they’re very similar.

The problem lies in creativity. Mario Kart always sells well because it manages to split apart from the usual racing crowd with fun and unique features.

  7. Wait, why am I subscribed?

@thatguy Mario Kart 7 would like to have a word with Mario Kart DS…

  8. We need a new Burnout that is a real Burnout for the Wii U (but please nothing like the original)
