New Super Mario Bros. producer Takashi Tezuka was asked about which recent 2D platformer impresses him. Tezuka revealed that he was very impressed by Retro Studios’ Donkey Kong Country Returns for Wii. New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Donkey Kong Country Returns were being developed at the same time and when Tezuka saw the latter while it was in development, he thought “the graphics were so pretty.” Tezuka said that Donkey Kong Country Returns had a positive impact on him.
There has been a 2D platforming renaissance as of late, with games like Braid, Super Meat Boy, and Kirby’s Epic Yarn. Is there any game that influenced you or that you’re particularly impressed with?
“The Donkey Kong game that we just had out on Wii, Donkey Kong Country Returns–I actually got a glimpse of a ROM while they were still in development. The graphics were so pretty that I thought, wow, that looks really nice. We were working on New Super Mario Bros. Wii at the time, and that really became an impetus. That really kicked us in the butts. I don’t know if “influence” is the right word, but it had an impact.”
Interesting. I hadn’t noticed.
I personally loved DKCR. It is definetly my favorite 2D platformer. I really do hope we get some sort of sequel. Maybe for the 3DS!
We did. Tropical Freeze is out for Wii U now
I love them both, and I can see that. They both are full of color, except one is a little more challenging than the other haha.
DKCR is hard as shit
Retro is amazing. They should hire more workers, and release a game every year for Nintendo.
They’ve hired lots of new workers, but no, they shouldn’t do a game every year, they’d be rubbish
Not if they hired enough people :P
yeah let retro become activition and let them milk there franchise every year.
you can’t compare a game developer to a game publisher
^this guy’s got a point.
it true but my point is that retro is fine, let them take there time to make a great game.
oh by the way i was been sarcasm on the whole retro=actitition=cod.
I agree – Retro is fine how it is, and with how they currently are, it makes Retro’s releases all the more sweet.
Billy Madison is right, Donkey Kong is the best game ever.
Donkey Kong Country Returns is hard when you try to get all the Kong letters and clear the K levels. Haven’t had that sort of challenge since Bowser’s Castle in Super Mario Bros.
My favorite is DKC 2.
By the way…. didn’t like the wii version.
Cannot switch between Donkey and Diddy
That’s not fucking shallow or petty at all.
I liked it but it was hindered greatly by the shake-to-roll thing. No where near as precise as a button press.
Own both, Completed both… I feel accomplished!
And that is why Retro is awesome, but all the better for other reasons.
dk country returns is an absolute masterpiece. I demand a sequel on the wiiu in glorious 1080p.
YES!
It’s already there.
No, DKCR is a thousand times better than NSMBW
Agreed!:D But NSMBW was still good:3
I want a DKC 4 with next-gen graphics on the Wii U, as in the old SNES DKC to using the full power of the console!
Title: New Super Mario Bros. Influenced By Donkey Kong?
Article: “I don’t know if “influence” is the right word, but it had an impact.”
-_-
Well that’s Alba for you
I wish we could go back to old school Street Fighter days… now people feel visually deprived by such entertainment – but it takes me back, son! =D
You are a pretty person.
As soon as I saw that avatar I knew a comment like this would be under it
DKCR >>>> Mario bros wii
dkc was masterful
I had noticed- the new SMB (Wii U) looks like a mixture of SMB Wii and DKCR. And the latter is probably my favorite platformer ever because of its mix of great gameplay and magnificent visuals.
Now that I have that on my mind, I think I’ll have to get SMBU at launch.
DKCR is on another level compared to New Super Mario Bros. Wii, it’s funner, prettier, more challenging, more versatile and it’s DK :)
I guess this proves that, despite their MvsDK titles, the monkey and plumber are still on good terms.XD
Both games looks good. Looks like classic Nintendo from the SNES days.
Retro always seems to make the most out of the hardware, which is why I can’t wait for their Wii U games.
