Wii Has The Least New IP’s

Gamespot has analysed which of the three console manufactures have the most new IP’s. Sony has come out on top since it launched its PlayStation 3 console in 2006. Microsoft is the second console manufacturer that has focussed on building new IP’s, though they have a smaller range than Sony. Nintendo has the least new IP’s, but then again, they’ve got plenty of existing franchises which they have built upon.

      1. He’s got a point though. Other than LBP and InFamous, I really don’t care much about Sony’s other new IPs.

        1. That’s not a real point. That’s just a personal opinion.

Of course you find Sony’s (or MS’s) new IPs to be lacking. Otherwise you would be playing more of their platforms and not Nintendo’s.

That’s what makes it a typical fanboy response. Someone who’s not a fanboy would be addressing why Nintendo doesn’t release as many new IPs as the others. Jerk responses about quality of the competition – something that wasn’t even remotely addressed by the title – is the kind of stuff a fanboy cares about. A real fan would be worried only about Nintendo’s policies and if they make sense or not.

          1. instead of writing an essay about why im a fanboy why dont u give me some examples of new ip from sony or microsoft that are worth playing?

            1. New IPS worth playing? Let’s see. Uncharted, Little Big Planet, Infamous, Killzone, God of War, etc..

                1. No, 1FPS, a TPS adventure game, a side scrolling
                  level editor, an open world
hybird genre, and a very good
                  button mashers

                    2. Jesus Christ! Stop acting like a fanboy! God of War it’s a great adventure series with huge levels and awesome combat. Killzone it’s a kick-ass FPS that really pushes the gamer’s limits with a kick-ass multilayer. Infamous it’s a great sand-box game where you control Cole who has great thunder attacks. Fun game. Last, but not least it’s LBP which it’s more original than most stuff I have seen from Nintendo in the past 4 years.

                    1. Dude just give it up. I love MyNintendoNews but 90% of the people who post on it are completely insufferable. Some of them even thought Other M was good.

                    2. I
                      thought
                      Other

                      was

                      not
                      Metroid
                      standards.
                      Plus,Samuswasajoke..

    1. Intellectual property, or putting simply, a franchise.

This means that of all the three major platform holders, Nintendo lagged behind when it came to introducing new series this generation.

At least they didn’t get the IP milking crown, according to the article – that went to Microsoft, which released more sequels to their known IPs than anyone else.

      1. *COUGH*activision*COUGH*

And it’s not really that huge of a deal, since Nintendo has plenty of older series still good to go. I quite enjoyed some of Sony’s new series this generation, though.

      2. Yeah, I love Nintendo, but I do wish they came out with more new IPs. Hopfully they will once the WiiU comes out there will be more new IPs from Nintendo. Also, I can’t think of many new IPs from Microsoft besides Gears of War and Viva Piñata. Then again can’t think of many for Nintendo either…

    2. Intellectual Property. For Nintendo those are the games and characters they own. Mario, Zelda etc.

  1. Doesn’t really come as a surprise. Nintendo have the tendency to play it safe and constantly pump out new installments of the same franchises ad nauseum. Whether that’s good or bad depends on who you’re talking to, of course.

Personally wouldn’t mind them taking a chance on new stuff a bit more often.

    1. Honestly, I don’t believe this.

      Aura Aura Climber,
      You, Me, & The Cubes,
      Metal Torrent,
      Picturebook Games,
      Elite Beat Agents,
      Xenoblade Chronicles,
      Thruspace/Ketzals Corridors,
      AH: Araic Sealed Heat,
      Rhythm Heaven,
      Fluidity,
      Eco Shooter,
      Dynamic Slash,
      Looksly’s Lineup,
      Art Style

        1. better than all first person shooters man sony and microsoft fanboys really like blood and violence prolly cause their immature

              1. Dumbass. Same Nintendo loser. You are the kind of fanboy that makes serious Nintendo fans like me feel like shit.

              2. You make me sad to be a Nintendo fan.
Everyone, I’m sorry for people like this. Fanboys like this make all the other regular fans look bad-and it’s not just Nintendo. There are plenty of good, knowledgable fans who acknowledge the faults and benefits of every system-they just don’t make themselves known like this guy.

                  1. PhantomBowser16 on twitter

You really are a pathetic creature, aren’t you?

I’m primarily a Nintendo fan who also likes Sony (though not their handhelds). I’m not the fanboy that you seem to make every normal Nintendo fan look like.

                  2. You Are a dirty minded ass hole you shouldn’t even be on this site, get the hell of this site moron!

          1. One of them, Dynamic Slash (aka Zagenki no Reginleiv), is a gorey IP. It’s Japanese exclusive and Nintendo’s goriest game in history.

            1. wheres ure face? is it up your boyfriends ass us stpid faggot? how much sperm did u swallow today?

        2. Most of the ones I listed have at least a 73 or above on metacritic. I can list more, but I have a life too. Also, I was also listing DS/DSi Ware games so that anyone who comments “Nintendo should do these more often” or “Nintendo is Lazy” would listen as a lot of the comments I see seem to be towards Nintendo in general & not the Wii.

      1. Quite a few of those are DS titles actually (Elite Beat Agents) or originated from DS games (Rhythm Heaven) so that list is small.

  2. Nintendo may not have the most new IPs but there stable of IPs are unmatched by anyone else. Instantly recognizable to most gamers. We should be getting some new ones on Wii U. Leave luck to heaven.

        1. I’m sorry, but what the hell is everyone’s beef with FPSs? Yes, there are unoriginal ones, but that could be said for every genre. You guys seem to have forgotten amazing games like Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, Halo, Metroid Prime. Everyone seems to stick to one series (COD) and just assumes every single game of that genre is like that.

    1. How is not having the most IP’s a failure? Nintendo has had 24 more years than Microsoft to introduce new IP’s, and 17 more than Sony. It can hardly be a failure to introduce what’s not needed.

      1. It means they can’t innovate and come up with new series rather than the same tired franchises over and over again.

        1. I have to agree. It’s damn time to introduce some KILLER new IPs. Don’t mention me games like Eco Shooter and Rhythm Heaven because they are not killer IPS.

            1. An FPS would be nice to see, or a TPS. Id prefer an open world game with a difference, just sonething that blew other open world games out the water

        2. Yeah, I mean, Super Mario Galaxy is no where near innovative oh wait it fucking is.

I wasn’t aware that a game can’t be innovative if it’s part of a same series as another.

        3. What? When they’ve been innovating for the last 30 or so years with new IPs? Anyway, they still released new IPs, so your argument is totally invalid.

          1. New IPs can help a lot in going into new territory. Say what you want, you can’t really put Mario into an fps or a flight simulator.

            1. I know what you mean but making a new IP doesn’t mean they’re not innovating or doing new things. You can take a 25+ year old franchise and still do new things with it as Nintendo has proven.

  3. No matter how awesome the next Mario, Zelda or what ever Nintendo franchises will be, some new ones would be nice. Project P-100 is a step in the right direction.

      1. … And how about Xenoblade in 2011? It’s actually somewhat annoying that they didn’t list the games they’re talking about.

    1. I saw this more than a month ago.

Basically, overclocked 360 after all. This is outdated in accordance to the retail unit, but don’t expect any significant changes.

        1. Randomly posting this and not trying to prove me wrong is a rather disturbing sign that you actually -can’t- and want to stay in denial.

None of these specs are impressive or particularly better than what you could get in 2008…actually even higher end GPUs are better. It’s very obviously not a HD4850 after reading this, but actually a worse series of R700 powering it. I lol’d.

PS: The 360 also had a tessellation unit if any wise guys want to point it out.

      1. Me too^^
DEV Kit with 600% more RAM and a Quad Core Processor is an overclocked Xbox, you’re funny :D

        1. The Dev Kit is triple-core as specifically seen in that article and the retail unit’s RAM is 1-1.5GB.

Do explain how the hell is that “600%”, oh wait, I smell fanboy.

  4. Thats probably the only fault i have with Nintendo, they NEED to make a new IP. Gamecube got Pikmin, and now thats one of their most popular core franchises, and it shows they can do it.
The rest is up to other companies, we’ve already got P-100, and im sure theres another im forgetting, but hopefully we’ll see some, my PS3 libary is dominated by new IP’s

      1. I mean im all for a new Star Fox, Mario, Zelda. Metroid, ya know, bring it on, but they need something new….
Hopefully some new rising developers will start to make their own IP’s on the WiiU

  5. And most I’ve probably never even heard off since most games every1 seems to love from those 2 companies specially Microsoft are from third party…
    And those shouldn’t count…

        1. Well P-100 is a platinum games title, not that it doesnt look great, its just not a Nintendo title

  6. To be honest I don’t really mind Nintendo not bringing out new IP’s as we already have a lot already such as Mario, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, Metroid, Star Fox, Pikmin, F-Zero, Kirby, EarthBound, Fire Emblem, Kid Icarus, Ice Climber, Animal Crossing, Super Smash Bros, Dillon’s Rolling Western, Elite Beat Agents, Xenoblade Chronicles, Electroplankton, Excitebike, 1080 Snowboarding, Wave Race, Punch-Out!!, Steel Diver, Pilotwings, Freakyforms, Game & Watch, Project P-100 and the Wii Series plus more.

    1. Too bad Nintendo doesn’t give a crap about Wave Race, Ice Climbers and 1080 Snowboarding. I would buy a Wii U just for those games.

  7. The problem not only lies with Nintendo, but with the fans. Face it, most Nintendo fans hate new IPs. Nintendo releases new IPs this gen like FlingSmash, Xenoblade, The Last Story, Pandora’s Tower, and a few others I cant name of the top of my head, but you get the point. All of these games are new IPs, and who bought them? Well I did, i’m sure a few of you here did, but majority didn’t buy these games. Hell Pikmin, which is suppose to be one of their key franchises, each game only sold 1 million. The point is Nintendo always makes new IPs, but nobody buys them so if they don’t sell then why make a sequel or another new IP. Nintendo fans want to play it safe too, rather than taking a risk and buying a new game they’ll go but another Mario game because that’s what they like. So yes other Nintendo fans, you only have yourself to blame. And to those saying “I don’t care if they don’t make new IPs, they already have so many”. Yeah, too bad besides some main franchises like Zelda, Pokemon, Kirby, Metroid & Donkey Kong they do jack shit with their franchises. Star Fox, F-Zero, EarthBound, Wave Race, Ice Climbers, Custom Robo, and others are all missing in action while we get yet another Mario game.

      1. He makes a good point. But I guess no one on here likes it when someone brings up legitimate criticism to Nintendo or to Nintendo fans.

  8. Might be hard to see a need for more new IPs when you’re Nintendo and you’ve already got plenty of successful ones- from a financial stadpoint. I’d personally rather see them breathe new life into existing IPs (didn’t appreciate NSMBWii, but Custom Robo for Gamecube was a very cool change of pace). + Miyamoto said he’d do somethin’ new, so…

  9. This report is highly suspect. Are they referring to new IPs from thew CONSOLES or new IPs from the First party devs? Because Wii has plenty of New IPs like Muramasa and No More Heroes, Zack and Wiki, Just dance and such. Just because they may not be the Gamespot editor’s cup of tea doesn’t mean they don’t exist and don’t count. But enough with the hit piece journalism sickr.

  10. I don’t buy this. WHAT NEW IPS did Microsoft have this gen!? Gears? Alan Wake? WHAT ELSE!? I didn’t see anything else. Unless first party XBLA titles count. This chart would be pretty different then if they didn’t.

  11. Not surprising, to say the least. I would like less Mario games, to be honest. One main game a year (not even counting the endless spinoffs) is getting to be too much. I’d like to see Nintendo tackle a genre they haven’t yet and turn it into a new franchise.

    1. “One main game a year”? The only main games are Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 for this gen so I have no clue what you’re talking about. Although, I wouldn’t mind some more new series from Nintendo.

  12. Up until now, Nintendo haven’t needed to create new IPs frequently: its franchises have constantly been successful. Now is the time for them to launch new IPs to remind people how innovative they can alongside with the launch of the Wii U.

  13. would like some new game series that don’t suck like microsony. it’s not about how many new games you can make. it’s about how many new good games you can make.

  14. I would like to see more support for new IP, rather than all the focus that sequels get. For every new Mario or Zelda sequel/offshoot, there are numerous (albet, mostly mediocre) IP. Oh well.
