Satoru Kikuchi, a Tokyo-based analyst at Deutsche Bank AG, has revealed that for Nintendo to make a profit on Wii U hardware the company needs to sell the console for $299.99. However, Kikuchi says for the system to sell in the quantities that Nintendo want it to sell in – and attract a large consumer base – then it needs to be priced at $199.99
“To make a profit from hardware sales, the Wii U would need to be priced close to $300, based on estimated costs. To overcome competition from the many other devices on the market and be embraced by families and children, and not just hardcore gamers, it would need to be priced closer to $200.”

They’d probably be better off taking a loss on the console and selling it to more people, then making up the lost revenue in software sales. I actually thought that was standard practice.
That was standerd practice back in the atari days… prior to the crash when atari made its own games… they sold the console at a loss and made it up on their games… until 4 people got sick of getting no royalties or recognition on their work and made their own company (Activision… first ever third party game company) in which case Activision made games and sold them cheaper (and were able to keep the money… until nintendo came along with the lock out chip) than what Atari sold theirs at and became successful… others seen this success and decided to follow suit… so no people aren’t buying the over priced atari games they’re buying the cheaper third party games… atari stopped making money… Now of course if nintendo sold at a loss despite getting royalties from 3rd party publishers (which isnt enough to make a profite) they would need to put all their hopes on their own brand… and of course Nintendo brand games are amazing and tend to sell well, but in this day an age its a risky move to make

Ditto on that. I think the 3 bundle prices that got leaked last week are legit, and one with a HDD, it just makes sense with a system like this. Casual gamers arent going to be bothered about a HDD, they wont use alot, and but for gamers, you have people who are fans of digital, and buy these games that may or may not require install, and those that like old school games and buy Virtual Console titles, so id say a HDD bundle could be announced and available for launch, i duno.

Thats the thing, the Wii has weak, in terms of hardware, but it worked perfectly, besides a few rare cases of the disk reader bugging, but theyre not about to cut corners by making it affordable, and make having an external harddrive really slow, theres not a chance. Otherwise, just by a big SD, nothing is faster than flash memory, and they might even pack one in with the console, like how the 3DS comes with a 2GB SD, which was a very plesamt surprise
Indeed , you can get Huge flash SD for ridiculously cheap . You could have a little box with like X amount of big SD cards in with a list of what is on each SD card.

I mean im downloading Borderlands on my ps3 now….3.3GB..like, what? Thats so small, i nearly put that on my 3DS SD card. Obviously, some games will be bigger, so most games are 8-9GB right now, and next gen the games will be bigger, and make use to that 25GB, if they can be arsed, but still.

$249.99 would be a perfect target point for a core system– Wii U Console and a Game Pad (no game bundle).
Then the price of getting a game seperatly would make it more then $300. People aint just going to buy it with no game at all…. $249 should be bundled with a game or make the games cheeper then $59 which is my guess as thats the normal price of a brand new one.
Are you sure about it? In case you didn’t know, there are 3 SKUs on Wii U Core, Wii U Bundle, and Wii U Bundle plus the Pro controller. We don’t know the price point at the moment, but Nintendo will announce it tomorrow afternoon.
Depends if they do multiple SKU’s, a good enough amount of people complained about the lack of HDD, so maybe theyve done one with one build it, alon with the simple “arcade” version like the 360 did.

Scribble Naught’s …… I want all of them , but i wont be able to afford more than 4-5 of them at launch …. in the month’s that follow .

Yeah, theres tons of games i want, i’ll be getting AC3 day one, ive been waiting way too long for that game, and i do want Pikmin 3 but its not going to be a day one aparently, so i’ll probably get ZombiU or Rayman. After that, i can just pick and choose whatever takes my fancy at the time.

$300 is around £180/£190 ish call it £200. The Wii sold at £180 brand new when it came out so why can’t the Wii U sell at the… say £250 – £280 region seen as it is meant to be 6x more powerful?

I’d Gladly pay $300, but if I spend less on the system I can buy more games. And even if Nintendo does come out of the gate taking a loss it might not matter a ton; they’re not going bankrupt for a few hundred years. :P
The price has so much to do with the reason the trolls bash it. We all know Nintendo never Really trys to over charge for their home consoles. The trolls know Sony and MS are going to be charging another $450 – $650, which they are not ready for. Trolls are scared of getting left behind because they cannot afford the over priced systems.
You do realise nintendos never tooken a loss with their consoles right? Their taking a loss with the 3DS (not anymore atleast, I think) because of their mistake. Aside from that Nintendos has always made a great profit (points at the wii)

I see what’s is happening now; We are being brain-washed into thinking that the WiiU SHOULD retail for a certain amount, so when instead it is to be sold at $400 people will then start hating on the WiiU. Well it is NOT going to work. I have had all the time in the world to prepare for the release of the WiiU and am willing to spend up large for a new Nintendo home console.

My prediction for Thursday is that they will announce the Wii for $299.99 available on November 18. The Wii U will have one universal friend code and if you meet someone online you can automatically add them with out having to input their code similar to adding someone in Monster Hunter 3 Tri. They will announce that New Super Mario Bros. U, NintendoLand, Assassin’s Creed III, Ninja Gaiden 3, Batman Arkham City: Armored Edition, Mass Effect 3, and Darksiders II will be launch titles with Game & Wario coming out in early 2013. They will not announce any new titles but might tease a logo of what will be coming in the future ( so expect the Retro Studio game and Monolith game to be announced at E3 next year). They will finally demonstrate what all the Gamepad can do including built in apps as well as the Wii U eshop.

Well, when Wii launched it was $250 according to everyone here, and £180 in the UK. That’s quite a difference. Plus Nintendo seem like they don’t wanna do what they did with 3DS (£230). I’m pretty sure it’ll be a cool £250. Guess we’ll see tomorrow, eh? :DDD

I am sick and tired of people telling Nintendo what they HAVE to do! And for the record There’s no way in hell the PS4 or xbox 720 will be $299.99-$349.99! lets be serious!
