Miyamoto Talks Pikmin 3

Famed games designer Shigeru Miyamoto has talked a little more about the long-awaited Pikmin 3 for Wii U during Nintendo’s Q3 financial results briefing. Miyamoto believes that the biggest draw with the game for consumers could well be the higher-resolution images through the high-definition graphics. Miyamoto also reiterated that Nintendo won’t be using asymmetric gameplay in a game if it is unnecessary, but in this game you can see the entire map on the Wii U GamePad.

“With regard to “Pikmin 3” for Wii U, I don’t want to be misconceived, but the biggest draw of this game is the higher-resolution images through the high-definition graphics. You can even see Pikmin’s gestures with the graphics. We are not going to put asymmetric gameplay in a game if it is unnecessary. In this game, you can see the entire map on Wii U GamePad. The two screens of the TV and Wii U GamePad will let you see what you are doing at any time during your gameplay, which alone is a great evolution for a strategy game. As a side note, you can play this game only with Wii U GamePad. If it is hard to imagine what it will be like, maybe you can recall the visuals of the original “Pikmin” for Nintendo GameCube and imagine how you can play it with the smaller but more detailed screen in your hands. The two control sticks of Wii U GamePad will let you play this game more comfortably and, with a TV screen, the gyro sensor inside Wii Remote Plus will further help your gameplay. Wii U GamePad will give you style variations of playing this game and playing only with Wii U GamePad might be a good experience for you. I hope you will like this game.”

  1. This is great news! Ive been wishing for Off screen play on Pikmin 3! I Simply want as many games as possible to use this feature. I love taking my Gamepad around the house with me ^_^ , Play in Bed , Play whilst watching the TV , Play whilst waiting for something to cook , Play whilst taking a shit and so forth!

    1. The graphics of the game are incredible! Those latest Nintendo direct videos of Pikmin 3 look amazing. Like on of the best looking console Games I’ve seen.

    2. I am assuming he meant the biggest improvement over previous installments. I.e. the major change isn’t any gimmick or isn’t the way the wii u gamepad is used but the superior hd graphics.

And from what hes said in the past i think the superior graphics are supposed to boost the gameplay i.e. the resolution is good enough you can zoom out to see the bigger picture but still clearly see and hence control individual pikmin negating the necessity to always zoom in and out constantly

  2. wen people try saying gamepad replaces wii remote is my pet hate of MORON SONY AND NS FANS it doesnt replace wii remote IT COMPLIMENTS IT…..

i love wii remote and chuck controls with gamepadvas the tactical side kick i play cough cough COD that way not for much longer im getting rid of it the games a lagging joke..bot shooter…

i think wii remote pikmen with game pad as a tactical screen makes so much sense

what CASUAL GAMERS aka sony and ms fans seem unable to understand is this fact WIIU HAS EVERY SINGLE CONTROLLER BASE WELL AND TRULLY COVERED GAMEPAD AND WII REMOTE ETC ARE THE WIIU’s tool box

and a CORE GAMER uses the correct tool for the correct job

i FPS with a wii remote not a plastic stick FOR A EXAMPLE OF COR-NESS

  3. Ok, as a first, it is kinda cute seeing nintendo mingle with HD graphics for the first time xD but he has a great point with being able clearly see each Pikmin as an individual and own little quirks they do.

On the other hand, this is exciting because it shows they’re focused on only putting in some crazy gamepad design, if it makes sense, and is simple.
With is good because now i have faith in the mext Zelda not using the Wiimote+ and actually being a good game.

    1. Yeah, not happening. There’s still gonna be motion controls for swordplay (which I perfer over mashing a button). Skyward Sword’s mechanics (for the most part) are here to stay.

      1. No they arent.
Yeah, this is how it went down at Nintendo.
“We made this new controller thats inspired tons of ideas for out IP’s”
“WAIT GUYS, I KNOW, WII MOTE”
        “OOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHH”

Plus, too many people, rightfully, complained about the motion+. They wont use it, and if they do, they better not have bullshit tutorials ALL THE FUCKING TIME, dumb gameplay mechanics like showing and explaining EVERYTHING you pick up in the game when you restart it, and use the same 3 areas, with nothing interesting to do outside of the dungeons, because you know what, if they do that? I wont even buy it.

        1. The swordplay worked fine for me. The other parts I agree with you sucked (I hate Fi more than any other character in the Zelda series). We’ll see, I don’t expect any more details about this until 2014.

          1. It wasnt that they didnt work, its that they didnt work perfectly, or 100% of the time, that stop the game from fucking up because i did something wrong to fucking up because the game was design wrong.

          2. To be honest, if Nintendo didn’t relasee a 2D Mario or something similar at launch after what happened with the 3DS, I think investors would set fire to their headquarters. Okay, maybe not that extreme, but it’s something that is required. They’re a business, remember.

  4. “We are not going to put asymmetric gameplay in a game if it is unnecessary.” Thank GOD! No unnecessary shitty shake controls in Games like DKCR. Thanks Nintendo!

  6. As always Miyamoto knows exactly what he’s doing. Just goes to show he is the best game designer of all time. He’s the sort of person that knows what games need and can “just do it”.

Mastermind and an influential genius. May he design for many years to come! :)

    1. That’s Nintendo’s buzzword for people having different gaming experiences simultaneously via the TV and GamePad. Like Nintendo Land.
