Retro president Michael Kelbaugh along with Nintendo’s Kensuke Tanabe and Risa Tabata have discussed how they think the Metroid series would work on the Wii U. Kelbaugh and Tabata both thought of ingenious ways to utilise the Wii U GamePad to display information to the user. Tabata thought using the suit’s HUD elements would work very well on the GamePad’s touchscreen, as well as using the GamePad for minigames, such as turning Samus’s ball-morphing ability into a pinball-like game.
“Samus obviously has a lot of features [in her space suit],” said Tabata. “There’s a lot you can do with that thing — once she pulls her arm up and pulls out that [metal flap] and does some of this stuff [Tabata pretends to punch buttons on her forearm]. I can see mapping some of that to the GamePad. I think that would be really cool.”
Tanabe, meanwhile, focused on what the shooting gameplay might feel like. At first, the translator had trouble figuring out what Tanabe meant, going back and forth to confirm what he heard. Here’s what he had to say.
“I [told Tanabe], ‘What, you want to hook a GamePad on a Zapper [gun peripheral]?’” recounted the translator. “He said: ‘No, that’d be too heavy. Maybe something more streamlined. But like a Zapper-style thing with a GamePad feature on it or some device like that. I’d love to do some shooting stuff with something like that! Maybe some day.’

Is it me or Retro is kinda regretting not delivering a Metroid game?
I do not think it is regret.. It is a matter of resources. New system, new game engines and they apparently really wanted to do a Donkey Kong game first.
Here’s the thing: they got so much hype for the past 3 years saying it’s a game EVERYONE wanted them to make; Reggie said he’s seen the game and it’s FANTASTIC. All this hype and secrecy; speculation was EVERYWHERE and people were hoping for either Metroid, F-Zero, or a new IP.
Then they revealed Donkey Kong. No one gives a crap about their Donkey Kong game now. Basically, after they finished DKCR, they thought, “Hey, how about we make a new one? I don’t wanna do Metroid.” “Durrr okay.” And then proceeded to make their upcoming DK game into some Wii U-saviour, something that’ll show off its graphical power, in a way that pleases EVERYONE, and kept it SO secret that NO ONE had any legitimate idea of what it was.
So in answer to your question, after Retro has seen everyone’s response to their bull crap, yes. Retro is regretting not delivering a Metroid game. (: (I’m kinda angry about this if you can’t tell. Not at you but at Retro.)
thats why you dont listen to reggie!!!! hes a joke and nobody in there right mind in europe would want to trade the noe president for reggie!!!!! look at his track record he doesnt liike games or know good games, he just cares for casuals and thats it.
Agreed. If they would have announced a Metroid game (or some new IP) from Retro I would still have hope for the Wii U. But they only showed games that I’m not interested in. Now it’s too late. I already moving on to different platforms where I can play the type of games that I like. Then they say why people don’t buy 3rd party games on Nintendo consoles, it because all they care about are casuals and babies. I used to buy 3rd party games on Nintendo consoles but I am tried of missing out on them.
It took “Operation Rainfall” to convince Nintendo to release all those more mature games in the west ( like Xenoblade and Pandora’s Tower; The Last Story and etc). It pretty obvious that Nintendo is out of touch with mature gamers.
I miss Rare (Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, Conker, etc), Silicon Knights (Eternal Darkness) and the other 2nd party developers that they had that used to make other types of games for the ones of us who aren’t interested in all these Mario clone games.
I’m not saying they should stop doing Mario games and whatnot (don’t mean to offend anyone), but they shouldn’t forget about the ones of us who want other types of games.
exactly what you said is what i have wrong with nintendo, everything you said is facts and all the pathetic fanboys on here will probably disagree. thats exactly whats wrong with them, the fanboys apparently only like the same games and only the childish ones.
I can agree with watch that and iceazeama to a certain extent, but I really hate the way some of you guys act, its not needed. Your comments would be well respected if they didnt involve so much insulting and childish bullshit, but I guess you are children, so what can i expect huh? I am NOT liking Nintendo’s direction so far… yes I love the games they announced, especially X, but shit man its looking more and more everyday that Im not going to be able to go through with my plan of sticking with only Nintendo this generation. Oh well as much as I love Nintendo, its clear things seem out of touch there, and my TRUE loyalty lies within Gaming, not just 1 company… Sad but I tried Nintendo.
You do know there is a sequel to Eternal Darkness coming out next year for the Wii U, right? And, E3 isnt the only game conference of the year ya know, there is still plenty of time to show off whatever else they have cooking. I wouldnt have expected a new Metroid or Zelda game until NEXT holiday season anyway. There are plenty of aweome games coming out this year and early next 2014 for Wii U: Watchdogs, Assasins Creed 4, Donkey Kong, Mario Kart 8, Mario 3d World, Wonderful 101, x, Bayonetta 2, SSBWiiU, Rayman Legends, and Call of Duty Ghosts. Who knows, they may even have a few surprises too. Im surprised that people have yet to learn not count Nintendo out.
DKCTF will be an amazing platformer. I’m not disappointed at all. Day one purchase for me. The news itself may have been a tad disappointing, but the game will be great. Since the game is coming out in 5 months, chances are they start working on something new real soon.
I don’t blame retro on there choice DK country returns was DK’s first game in a long while … Metroid has had the prime games on the gamecube and had the other M on the wii so no not a bad choice there are just as many people who like DK more Metroid as the other way around
idk why everyone is jacking off to metroid like it’s the best game ever. Honestly donkey kong shits on metroid.
u must be drunk if u think an ape is better than a sexy blond…
No, honestly they just don’t know what to do with the series. I mean, how do you fix the mess Other M made?
a good sequel to Metroid Fusion
I’m more hopeful for a reboot of the series.
Reboot is pointless as the games already go ta remake
Making a reboot will just make ppl want a new game rather than just a retale
I’m curious to see what this new game engine, which Retro created, can do! I’m sure a new Metroid game could put it through it’s paces…unless DKC:TF is using it, then…wow?
Nintendo slipped bit time not having a Metroid Game ready this year. Wii U desperately needs a quality FPS game.
No they need an excellent game, FPS we couldn’t care less about…
First-person shooters aren’t bad games. The only problem with the genre is western developers rehashing it into a military gore game. KI Uprising is a rail shooter and guess what? You can even go first person on it. I also prefer the old Call of Duties because they weren’t as rehashed.
FPS are good, and are amazing when done by Nintendo. Not to mention a good chunk of people want one.
totally just look at goldeneye and perfect dark 1, if you do a fps right, just like any other genre, it becomes a classic
Its FPA
I still don’t see why people call it that. Yes, it’s a FPA, but it’s also a FPS. In Metroid Prime, you Shoot things in First Person mode. FPS. For your information, it’s also a platformer.
what if it ends up being a third person shooter, but actually done well, with a story you can follow, zombieu wasn’t that bad.
If this is early planning then its still years away…….
With Nintendo delaying games like nobody before there’s the chance of it being released when the new *Wii U Hii Shii iit theii* is released lol.
first
First of all, see obviously High Command and Retro Studios already are thinking about a new Metroid game…
Second, it’s not as easy as people believes to make an excellent game that has our quality…
Third, for the love of the holy N, no mini-games in any form i na metroid game thank you…
If you find a similar use during the game’s Environments then go ahead but no OBVIOUS mini-games…
No mini games? Come on, I liked shooting those little robots on the Olympus in Prime 3 😉
please no peripherals, just use the gamepad
Here are my ideas to what they had to say:
Scanning (if it returns) should work like that panorama view. Look around and tap-hold what you want to scan.
We saw in some games how Samus turned around that “thing” on her arm cannon. This should be brought tobthe screen and make it to a device for switching weapons, CONTROLLING A SHIP THAT CAN FLY WHENEVER I WANT and opening the map.
The screen should also hold Samus’ status with energy and weapon reserves.
I don’t think the zapper like controls would work out that way. They should rather use the Metroid Prime 3 controls for that gameplay style.
These are some of my ideas, this is what I(!) think about when I hear “good use of the controller”.
Well at least they are thinking about stuff

Shut up virgin
Am I doing it right lol
What?
Retro have got it all wrong, we don’t want gamepaad gimmicks we want gamepad gameplay, see Fractured Soul on 3DS for more details
I want Samus ‘s wet pussy on my hard pumping dick. I want to kick that pussy clean and rub her nipples . Then I want to slide my dick down her throat and cum in there. Fuck yes.
Why u troll?
And this is why my mom thinks hentai and gamers are weird.
I dare you to kick her in the poon, bro. Shell fuck you up & I’ll be like, “Why you dead, bro?”
Ewww!!!! You flippin’ pervert. Metroid must come soon to Wii U!
Mass Effect made great use of the gaempad I think. Very intuitive and helpful.

Welcome to E3 2016, we have a big surprise for you all, you can get your gruby shitty hands on Metroid U, Spring 2017! :D
nice
I think a new Metroid Prime could actually make use of some mechanics we saw in Game and Wario, like, maybe make the visors more interactive, so you hold up the gamepad against the screen to scan, like in Shutter.
Well the more controller options, the better for everyone.
As long as we still have the option for the Wii remote and Nunchuck if the GamePad is really that gimmicky.
I would rather have a gimmicky GamePad than a Wiimote+Nunchuck any day. I hope they give us an option for the Pro…. Or a Gamepad Mini that actually looks like a gaming controller.
I liked the Wii controls in Prime 3. So much so that I bought the Trilogy so I could play the first two games that way. So much better than how you aimed with the GameCube controller.
lets see how we can ruin metroid, to shoot you use the gyro sensor and to scan you shit on the gamepad. to control the camera we are making this one super gimmicky with the gamepad, you have to use your gamepad as a camera to fight enemies. just like we did with fatal frame 3ds, is ruin a good franchise and then not bring the 4th west. we at nintendo like to make anything good crap. ( starts shitting over metroid and starts bowing to wii music) hope you enjoy what the gamepad has to offer.
If they make me use Wii remotes again im gonna fucking rage
Hope they already started.
FPS, FPA, whatever. I want no part of any “prime” like game. Give me a classic “Metroidvania” and I will be happy. Castlevania missed their shot with their 3ds game. Cmon Nintendo.
Castlevania is a Konami ip. And the ³DS game wasn’t bad. Only igavania fanboys say that.
If they make us use the damn Wiimote and Knunchuck again i am gonna flip shit.
Pretty sure they won’t make you use them, just like how Donkey Kong won’t.
I loved those controls, and i hope they give us at least option to use them.
Another awesome prime game maybe?
That homage to Metroid Prime Pinball would be pretty cool. Can’t wait to see Metroid on Wii U!!!
As much as i am nintendo fan, i have to agree, the direct was boring, i’m not that much platformer fan, so only games that intrested me at all were SSB and Pokemon, and i can’t even watch pokemons trailer for the freaking spoilers. I would have wanted Zelda or Metroid, or just something more intresting.
In all honesty I am glad they are not making another metroid b/c right their ideas suck. A sequel to metroid prime hunters, using the wii u zapper as a controller what the hell are they thinking. Metroid is about being alone on an alien planet it’s not about multiple bounty hunters and why can’t they just use the gamepad for controlling samus, map, inventory, and visors or just used the wii remote like mp3?

I was quite disappointed to not see a new Metroid for Wii U. I really loved the controls in MP3, they were way more accurate. I had MP1 for GameCube, and went back to play it, and the controls seemed so rigid (only after I played MP3). Kind of how OoT 3DS’ aiming was so much better with the gyroscope (not that I want to see that type of control at all in the new Metroid, that would be a nightmare to use the gyro with the pad). I actually bought the Trilogy and gave away my MP1/MP3 because the controls were more comfortable for me (though I mainly bought the Trilogy b/c I couldn’t get a copy of MP2 that worked – why does GameStop say they test games when they don’t?)
Anyway, I would LOVE to see a Prime-style FPS/FPA/whatever-you-call-it. I’d be happy too to see a third-person type as well; I’m not picky. As long as it doesn’t get other characters involved, like in Other M, Metroid Prime Hunters, or even Metroid Prime 3 to an extent (great game, but the federation involvement was a tad annoying, hence another reason why Priime 1 is one of my favorite games ever – no stupid people).
