EA Sports Says They Would Develop For Wii U If The User Base Was There

fifa_13_players

EA Sports boss Andrew Wilson has reiterated the company’s stance on Wii U. Wilson says that the team develops games for platforms with a substantial user base and the Wii U just doesn’t have that at the moment. Wilson then said that they have brought sports games to the platform, but they haven’t sold as many units as the company envisioned. He concluded by saying that if a sizeable gamer base is on the platform in the future, then they will bring their vast array of sports related titles to the Wii U.

“I build for a userbase. I made games on Facebook because I thought people were there that wanted to play them. Then it became apparent to me that either I had the wrong game or they weren’t there. We had a strong offering on Wii U at launch. The platform hasn’t had the take-up. Our games hasn’t had the take-up we’d have liked. So at this moment we are not focused there. Now they could do a range of things that might change that situation, and we’d never count them out. And should there be a sizeable gamer base there in the future, we would build games for Wii U. But for us it’s less about building for a platform, and more about building for a group of gamers on a platform where they are. And sports gamers weren’t there.”

    1. At this point it sounds like a smear campaign, they keep talking about it everyday. First sayings its a weak system and you can’t make games for it and now saying there is no user base (it has a very similar user base to the Xbox360 and PS3 when they started). If this was just one or two comments off hand, it would be ignored, but its like an everyday thing now.

      1. It’s no smear campaign and what they said is not untrue.

They talk about it because the media asks about it. They’re not going out and sending press releases saying this stuff.

Some of it is individual employees just tweeting their opinions. In those cases, it shouldn’t even be reported on as fact or an official statement.

Other things are from officials being asked specific questions by members of the media who in turn sensationalize and twist a lot of things.

        1. Not saying I truly think it would be, but they just keep going over it day in day out. Plus every time they post something on Twitter, its just keeps going. Plus, EA has always been a company that likes to throw its weight around.

        2. The problem is that they gimp the games, and then say that people won’t buy them (maybe it’s because CONSUMERS AREN’T IDIOTS?).

      2. It is a smear campain, but this e3 got EA to realize that there will be games on the system that drives sales.

EA got a deal with Disney that will forxe them to make games on Wii U. And they can’t ignore the Nintendo fan-base if/when Wii sale numbers starts to pick up.

Therefore they need to start make up excuses already.

        1. Thanks, they randomly gave me that. I almost think it looks like a Galaxian enemy so I kept it. I can see where you get bat though.

      3. i honestly believe Microsoft bribed ea to “kill” wii u and prepare a path for the xbox one. i’m not joking when im saying this. microdick just wants to be #1 for once and they are doing that by first revealing a console and saying bad stuff about it then saying they are not doing it. this made the console well known. now they are trying to kill Nintendo because they know there’s no way to best selling without killing Nintendo first. their next plan would be to outsell Sony but we all know this plan will fail and we can all say bye-bye to Microsoft and EA.

    2. Not really, their games on Wii U are gimped. None of the DLC for ME3 and no trilogy, which launched on all other platforms at the same time for the same price. Madden 13 was Madden 12 + gamepad on Wii U. Fifa 13 was Fifa 12 + gamepad. NFS is good, but very late coming, if they would have released Crysis on time with other platforms, it would have done well. If they announced BF4 for Wii U as well as the upcoming Fifa and Madden, there would be more confidence in the platform. What they have on their hands is a self fulfilling prophecy. In the console’s infancy they provided half-assed support, then blamed the user base for their weak sales. Then pull support because the user base “isnt there”.

      1. Hmmm. True, they just say this as an excuse for something different like how they said that Frostbite can’t run on Wii U. They really have no excuse for this :/

      2. The Mass Effect trilogy was released on platforms where the games were already developed. They would have to go all the way back to the start and develop both Mass Effect 1 and 2 for Wii U in addition to 3. You know how much money and time that would take? ME 3 on Wii U was touted as one of the best versions by many, despite the lack of later DLC (it *did* include some DLC).

I agree that Madden was gimped version of the previous year, the same way it was on the Vita (another system with a lower install base).

Not sure about FIFA, I have mostly heard good things about that on the Wii U.

NFS is great on the system and it’s better late than never. You complain about Mass Effect 3 being the only game out of the series, but please believe, if 1 and 2 were to come out, the trilogy would have seen a release much, much, later. Plus, what about these other late games that a lot of Nintendo only gamers seem to be excited for like Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut. That game is YEARS late and I barely hear anyone complaining.

And releasing Crysis, you would have complained again that 1 and 2 aren’t on the system.

As for the future releases, well, they made their decision. Chances are even if EA decided to put those games on the Wii U at their launch, most owners wouldn’t even get them because of their EA hate, or because they’re simply not interested in those games on Wii U.

        1. I think the Mass Effect 3 thing came from EA releasing the Trilogy right afterwards and some extra DLC that looked interesting to fans who bought it on the Wii U was only coming out on competing systems. I think they had the right to complain, even if its unrealistic that they get all three games made out of the blue.

The same thing happened on the 3DS with Metal Gear Solid 3, people got mad when they heard the Trilogy was going out on Vita and the PS3. I think is also hurt sales of the game on the 3DS too.

    3. Don’t let their “nice” words fool you!

This is EA in 5 months…

      1. We have an unprecedented partnership.

      2. We feel the Wii U is current gen.

      3. The Wii U is trash.

      4. The Wii U Gamepad is very innovative.

      5. We released 3 half-arsed ports and one good one so we are satisfied.

      6. The Wii U is weak.

      7. We have a strong partnership with Nintendo.

      8. No DLC coming to our released ports.

      9. The Wii U has a low install base but we develop many more games for consoles with 0 base.

      10. We had “strong” games for Wii U but notmany bought it so basically we don’t care much at all anymore.

      Maybe I forgot a few points…

The day you Electrons make a game with everything you got then I might start changing my mind against you…

    4. what the fuck did they expect, they made fifa 12.5 not 13 for wii u, what do they want from us, do they think we are so stupid to buy it???

    5. I guess it’s correct… I’m a Nintendo fan, usually the first thing i would do is rant or get pissed, but they’re absolutely right. Not that we need EA sport games, but the fact that we need more user’s to buy WiiUs. For once I agree with EA.

      1. They need to bring other games to the Wii U besides stupid ass sports games. Problem solved. Plenty of people will play Battle field or dead space on Wii U. EA is garbage.

  1. EA please stop talking about it, move on….cause I am tired of hearing about it day in and day out.

    1. Whether we like it or not, Microsoft has a strong hold in North America and a pretty big influence in Europe. Despite the negativity we see on the internet, this is not indicative of the whole gaming consumer community, The Xbox One will sell well. Whether that’s above or below the current gen, that’s yet to be seen; but unless something catastrophic comes along, it’s not going to fail.

      1. It’s the most expensive 8th gen console and it already pissed off its own fanbase with the DRM restrictions.

        1. As I said, the opinions and rage on the internet are not indicative of the consumer realities.

Ask any normal consumer and they’ll be like, “DRM? What’s that? I want an Xbox for Halo!!!”

Trust me. I worked in games retail for a while and saw this all too often. The web communities might be vocal, but they’re still a minority.

      2. Its going to sell no more than 15 million units. its 500$ and doesn’t have a lot of interesting games like the other two have.

        1. Remember when PS3 started out? It was $600, barely any games at launch, and still went on to sell over 70 million units.

You may not find the games interesting, but a lot of other people do. And there are a crap ton of people out there with the mentality that they’ll only buy Xbox because:

          Xbox Live
          Halo
          Call of Duty
          Xbox Controller

I have friends who are 360 only gamers and they have already pre-ordered the Xbox One for those reasons alone.

There are many more like them.

  2. Yep i dont know why you guys always say bad things about EA if i were EA i would not publish my game if they dont sell. Thats my opinion and i understand every dev and publisher that doest want to support wii u.

        1. Xbot let us lend you one of our brain cells so you finally get it. Paying for a free service these ten years has eroded a lot I see. We would never buy a 2012 edition of a game masked as a 2013 game, when weaker systems like the PS3 and xbox 360 get the 2013 version. We are not complaining just stating facts. We stand up for our rights and don’t support nonsense. Like the morons that still have an xboxone preordered. WiiU, 3DS, PS4 or even the sinking Vita would do compared to that windows 8, kinect 2, VCR box.

          1. Even if we get new games i bet my money they will sell same as old ports. Audience for those kind of game are not in wii u yet.
            Just get over it.

        2. Exactly. Same shit will happn if xbox one wont sell their games.
This is bussines and like i said understand.
Just get over it or go buy a ps4.

        3. Mhmm so what will happen when people realise that the DRM feature is actually only switched OFF on the Xbox One… then what?

    1. Monster hunter 3 Ultimate sold amazingly so, that Capcom wants to start releasing monster hunter games on a simultaneous world release basis. Reason? It is because the gave us a complete game and then some.

    2. Not really, you see, just like the way you’re thinking, the devs are thinking the same way, they don’t support a console cause of sales? Once one decides they are off board, then the rest are off, is up to them to make 3rd party games for a console, but if people see no new games coming in there will be less sales…

    3. if i was a developer i would support consoles. i have no trust in EA because they can’t stay developing for a console without quitting after the first road block. it’s like a divorce. it’s hard to trust someone after they have been in multiple divorces.

  3. nintendo holiday games for 2013
    super mario 3d port
    shitmin 3
    wonderful 101 days delayed

    prepare to lose to ps4

    1. You know those games mentioned are way better than the PS4 games except KH3 and FFXV imo. The PS4 games is just more shooters and free roam games (games like GTA).

          1. No, it isn’t a typo. The game is called, ‘Mirror’s Edge.’

It’s a reboot, not a sequel. People just seem to keep calling it Mirror’s Edge 2 I suppose so as to not confuse the two.

        1. every game on ps4 and box1 would be better on the u nintendoland isn’t even possible on those current gen pos

          1. And because you don’t like them you find that reason enough to call them terrible games? That’s a bit self-centred, and considering the success of most shooters, obviously a majority of people don’t agree.

            1. I didn’t call them a terrible games though. They’re just games I’m not a big fan of that’s all.

    2. Yet you are forgetting that Mario is a popular franchise, Wonderful 101 is the second biggest game that has massive amounts of preorders on the Wii U and the fact that Pikmin 3 is vastly popular… so your point is?

    3. The same was said with the PSVita when it released almost a year after the 3DS. Que ” PSVita game changer commercials ” that ran on every television channel. What happened next was 3DS amazing.

      1. The Wii U and Vita are not quite so different. The Wii U has an upper hand due to the Nintendo franchises, but both are in a similar predicament.

Lower install base, poor marketing, and waning third-party support due to some of those factors.

The Wii U came out saying it would be a game changer of sorts, innovative controls to “change the way U play.” The Vita said the same thing about handheld gaming, but look at them both. I think in the long-term though, both will see success. That’s not to say they’ll outsell their predecessors or even their competition, but those aren’t the only parameters for success.

        1. I didn’t call anyone retarded o.o I was referring to the mild mannered rude children who’s on smaller buses for started trouble… -_-

  4. Hate to say it but he’s right. Besides, sports gamers and nintendo gamers arent necesarily cut from the same cloth.

  5. Oh… now it’s about the “right audience”. I have some friends who plays Fifa, Mass effect, and need for speed, so I don’t know what EA is talking about… I think they expect to sell Fifa as much as Smash bros on Wii U.

    1. A couple friends isn’t enough. They are expecting Smash Bros. level sales on Wii U because that’s about what they’re getting on the other consoles.

    1. I liked sports games BEFORE EA became the exclusive publisher for the NFL…it brought an end to competition and any opportunity of fresh new ideas~hence killing sports for good! (just my opinion)

      1. You know what’s sad? That it took Ea till madden 13 to have better animations then NFL 2k5.

  6. I am sick of this nonsensical excuse. They are crafting plenty of games for consoles that currently have no user base. Sure, they did so for Wii U’s release but let’s face it; A re-released title like Mass Effect 3 is no Mirror Edge 2.

Another thing, they should stop trying to think that their game sale should be this or that. If they make a profit off something, that should be enough.

  7. EA Sports gave us FIFA 12 ( masked as FIFA 13 ), with limited additions and spruced graphics and expected us to lap it up as a great game. Really, EA? Capcom gave us monster hunter 3 Ultimate, with 80 boss monsters from the original 18. The added all known weapons, added all 12 base or starting weapons groups. Gave us the first WiiU-3DS cross play game. Added free online and Cree DLC. Then added off screen play with no region locking. Their monster hunter game is flying out of stores, because it is their major fanchise and the dedicated to deliver. EA nintendo gamers are from an ambient ancient marvelous family and extended line. We know quality, disguising a 2012 ip and saying it is 2013 will not sale to us as a consumer group that is alert. We have Xenoblade on the Wii and we expect quality on the WiiU. So get to coding. While at it tell the other divisions we await Battle front.

    1. Seriously what a bunch of lame excuses. The fanboys only see things their own way. I can argue the same thing about your precious Nintendo games. In my opinion Mario games are the same thing every time. How many times do you have to rescue Peach again? Oh wow, now he can turn into a cat. What so innovative about that? Wow he turns into a sticker and can stick to walls. Every iteration of a mario game is the same thing with a little new thing added. Same thing with Mario Kart. What so innovative about the new Mario Kart game that supposed to come out next year? Oh wow, now you can drive upside down or on walls. It must have taken them years just to come up with that one.
And the only reason you got Xenoblade was after “Operation Rainfall” convinced Nintendo to release it on the west, because Nintendo had no interest in doing so in the first place.

      1. Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario 3D World is kind of innovative. In 3D World you can use the Gamepad to move the camera. We haven’t seen much of Mario Kart 8 but you can check out the Mario Kart 8 Details article that was just posted on here. These new things add something new to the Mario Kart and 3D Mario series so yeah.

  8. They need to make more exclusive games for Wii U. That way the more so called “hardcore” gamers can buy the console and they might (probably not) buy other EA games on the Wii U. They should put a very popular game series squeal exclusively on Wii U like maybe Mass Effect 4.

    1. Or they could put them on PS and MS consoles and sell them to where the users are going to end up.

      1. Your whole being lost credibility when you said ms consoles. Say good bye to xbox. This is their last run at consoles. With Microsoft gone, gaming will be gaming again. No nonsense a drm cod nonsense.

      1. I know it sounds like an idea they would never do but you know that saying: “The greater the risk, the greater the award.”

    2. Except you’re asking them to severely limit their profits in order to do Nintendo’s job. The Wii U not selling well is Nintendo’s problem, not theirs.

      1. I only explained what could help them build a fanbase on the Wii U. I stated the “hardcore gamers could buy the console” part as just something that would happen if they did do my idea.

  9. Hey EA! Maybe if you didn’t take so much time talking about the Wii U you could actually make or publish a good game for the system

  10. I’m glad it’s not on WiiU. Maybe people will buy a different and better game than their shit.

  11. Well maybe the GAMERS will be there if the GAMES are there. How about that EA? 3 half-ass ports and 1 late port isn’t going to cut it. If these cunts actually release their upcoming games like BF4 to Wii U with all the features and DLC. Then it might actually sell. It’s common fucking sense. If its a good product then it will sell.

        1. Nice nintendo fanboy mentality. “I don’t like this gaming genre, so everything from that genre is garbage! Lolololol” At this rate nintendo will never have great third party support.

  12. EA, make a good sports game and people will buy them. Your madden game was a crappy port, if it would have been good people would have purchased it. Good games= more money, dummies.

  13. Maybe if they actually made games for Wii U, it would sell more?! I haven’t gotten a Wii U yet because companies LIKE EA SPORTS haven’t made any good games yet!

  14. Making poor outdated ports isn’t going where gamers are, it’s just asking to get bankrupt! Make real games and see your installed base growing up! That’s how the market works.

  15. Xbox One and PS4 has a 0 fanbase currently. You want gamers to be there without you having do actually give a reason for them to be there (making games) EA just wants the mindless sheep that are on the Xbox 360 and PS3 to be on Wii U. News Flash EA we at Nintendo have standards. You think any generic sports game will get you anything? Nope. Just stop taking 2 steps past Nintendo then 1 step back to peek in on Nintendo. Your like a customer who just comes into a store every few days to just browse. You never buy anything, you never support the “store”

  16. I don’t care for ea’s sports titles that much, but i rather play mario tennis, golf, kart, strikers, baseball, or anything else then a sports title from ea.Though its good to get some games from them so it widen the wiiu’s library

    1. Mario sports are more fun anyways, ea sports is boring, if i want to play realistic soccer i’ll go outside…-_-

  17. duh. the only reason ea and other devs are reluctant to bring their big games to wiiu. that will hopefully change by 2014.

  18. big three are overrated

Lol this is almost same thing what they did to Dreamcast, but Sega had balls and they replaced Ea sports games succesfully. Sega sports titles were much much better than Ea ones. I have said this many times if Nintendo wanted and they should want, they could replace these guys succesfully too.

    1. big three are overrated

I forgot to add but it would be nice to have new Virtua Tennis on Wii u, now that they are basically in bed with Sega lol.

  19. I’ve never liked EA games, except for maybe NCAA Football. I am a Wii U die hard and an unashamed NBA hardcore fan, so the fact that I have NBA 2K13 on the Wii U is great, although I don’t see NBA 2K14 being released for the Wii U, which probably indicates that sales were down for it as well. I don’t plan on buying an XBOX One or PS4, so for me the Wii U is my next gen console and I will celebrate the games that will be released for it.

  20. Why are 3rd party developers going to bother with the Wii U. I complain of the lack of 3rd party support on the system and the fanboys on this site tell me “Nobody buys Nintendo consoles for 3rd party games”. Exactly, because they only buy baby games.
Even Nintendo themselves know that Nintendo fanboys only buy baby games. That why it took “Operation Rainfall” to try to convince Nintendo to release Xenoblade, The Last Story, Pandora’s Tower in the west. Nintendo knows these games weren’t going to sell well in the West because babies don’t buy those games. It took “Operation Rainfall” to convince Nintendo that there was an audience for these more mature games on the West.

    1. STFU people can enjoy whatever they want, it’s retarded things like that “Baby games”? really? First of all I don’t see them as baby games I see them as games that follow and old school formula just cause you don’t runaround going bang bang doesn’t make them baby games.

  21. If there is a game there is a user base. If that game is different than other games like it. you get to develop a different user base. Wii U is again different. In one shot, they have tried to develop a user base? How many iterations of Madden were on Xbox 360? At least develop a next set of titles before pulling support.and saying there is no user base.

  22. For it to have an install base, it needs games. Games that ppl want. How are you gonna wait for an install base? WHY DIDN’T Y’ALL HELP CREATE THE INSTALL BASE THAT IT NEEDS INSTEAD OF JUST WAITING?

  23. There are two problems.
    1. No user base
    2. You didn’t even try to get a user base by releasing godawful ports at the beginning when you had the perfect opportunity!

  24. I’m glad we are getting a daily reminder on this topic… Seriously, who keeps asking EA the same questions!? 💋

  25. They don’t develop for the Wii U because of a small user base yet they develop for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One which both have a user base of 0.

  26. Pingback: EA Sports utvecklar till där spelarna finns | Ninside

  27. Is anyone else here beyond tired of hearing EA’s inconsistent 180 bullshit?

Here’s the problem of how their games won’t sell on Wii U and why Wii U gets shafted in every turn: 3rd parties are doing more bitching and fanboying than programming. Just wait once Wii U picks up sales by Nintendo alone and these dumbasses still rejects making quality games and be alienated by Nintendo/fans. Even I’m getting tired of this same old weak “Wii underpowered” excuse which will have to be proven wrong…once a-fucking-gain.

  28. Their sports hames didn’t sell because they weren’t the actual game. they were ports of FIFA 11 and Madden 12? Anybody who would have waited to get the WiiU version would have already had the damn game elsewhere = no sale.

NFS U was amazing but there were so few copies going around in actual game stores that I had to search pretty hard to evn find a copy online.

I work at a GAME store in England and on launch day for Wii U, they only sent us 1 copy of Mass effect 3, how do they expect people to buy their games if they’re not out there in he shops?

  32. No no no EA, I, and anyone else who thinks can see through your very clear veil of fine bullshit. It’s not about the system being weak, cause newsflash its’ not. It’s because Nintendo said no to Oriigns and now, you’re trying to trash Nintendo.
