Nintendo’s Adelman Says We Have A History Of Doing Our Own Thing, For Better Or For Worse

Nintendo’s Business Development Manager, Dan Adelman, admits that the company has a habit of doing their own thing, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse. However, he is extremely confident that sales of the Wii U will improve given the steady number of high-profile first party titles coming to the platform in the coming months.

“We often don’t compare ourselves to other consoles. We have a history of doing our own thing, for better or for worse,” he says. “We’ve had quite a bit of success not necessarily following the competition – for example, last generation with Wii, everyone was thinking it’s all about graphics horsepower and CPU horsepower and high-end graphics and shaders, and I think the Wii successfully demonstrated that no, it’s really all about gameplay and what kinds of new types of gameplay can you create, what new experiences can you create. Beauty fades.”

“I think we’d all like to see our install base grow a little bit faster, and I think we’ll see that when our holiday lineup comes up. I think a lot of developers are waiting on that. But so far, among the existing install base, purchases are pretty healthy and demand is pretty healthy, in that install base community.”

Thanks, Nick

          1. That is very harsh. I can understand that. He is a troll trying to bait people in and trying to cause trouble. Just keep on living or you be missing much! ;)

                  1. That was once. Please forgive me.
I didn’t mean what I said before I was just typing something. Oh and I checked your blog, you are pretty good looking!

  1. It’s a shame that they limited the Wii’s hardware. Now Nintendo has to learn how to optimize HD games for the Wii U and look at what’s happening now. A huge Wii U drought.

        1. It is just a saying like “I don’t want to prove you wrong or hurt you” kinda things.

I agree what he is saying but not the majority will though.

      1. I love your tone my fellow Nintendo Drone…

*Gives the medal of loyalty* for an excellent description…

        1. Wait? Are you that guy kept saying “leave luck to heaven”? I miss that guy! He is one of the reason I went on this site. :D

          1. Sorry to burst your “bubble” but I am not him…

However I do know of whom you speak of…

But fortunately I’m your new reason, that’s an order…

            1. Order accepted! I will not fail you! I will go on conquest and take over the world and everyone must believe us! Mwhahahaha! Oh wait, we are not zealot. Nevermind then.

  2. The nintendo guy is right about the big n historically dancing to their own tune thing. This is the first time i’ve ever seen a company like nintendo go out of it’s way to sell their competitions past and future hardware.

  3. This is the reason why i like Nintendo. Doing own thing and not being follower. Now bring DKCTF,M3DW and SLW all 3 kings of platformin only on Nintendo.

  4. Destiny, that awesome game that is coming to the WiiU in 2014 is actually what Halo should have been had it released on the PS2, GameCube and xbox original. So xbox lost the most important developers and still tried to pull a DRM move? LOL. Microsoft never seizes to amaze me.

    1. I don’t think Destiny has been confirmed for the Wii U. There’s rumors and speculation, but no confirmation that I’m aware of……
Having said that, though, I wouldn’t mind seeing it come to the Wii U.

    2. Think about it how much more bigger thing Destiny can be than Halo. If they have WiiU version it would be cool to play it with wii mote, the way fps games are best played.

  5. I love Nintendo’s philosophy, but Mr. Adelman is making a very stupid statement in saying that the Wii proved anything more than the existence of an enormous casual demographic.

  6. Yes, if I ignore all the replies and only read the article there is actually a positive ring to this post!

  7. I like the strategy of doing your own thing and not trying to copy or be better than everyone else with the most powerful tech and other features. As long as the business stays in business, that’s all that matters, whether you are famous or not. I would rather sell my products and stay in business, than to try and be better than everyone else. Do your best, yes, but you don’t have to act like you are the best company out there and have console wars.

  8. well doing your own thing can have severe consequences sometimes. so you have to plan ahead in case shit happens.
