Nintendo Confirms That Wii U Is Still Being Sold At A Loss

wii_u_gamepad_up_close

A Nintendo representative has confirmed that the Wii U is still being sold at a loss. This will come as a blow to many that were holding out buying the system until Nintendo implements a much-needed price cut. Numerous retailers in the United Kingdom have slashed the pricing, but the majority of stores in the US continue to sell the console for the recommended retail price. It doesn’t look as though this will change anytime soon.

          1. He is a serialized character from an equally repulsive show. Tv shows now have now writing decorum; watch robinhood of Sherwood from the 80s now that pure class. WiiU sold over 10 000 in Japan, for one month :). Start crying doubters and fakes.

            1. OH WOW, “TEN THOUSAND CONSOLES.” THE VITA SELLS THAT IN A MOTHERFUCKING DAY LOOK AT THE SALES CHARTS DIPSHITZ.

              1. No, it doesn’t. It sells about the same amount as the Wii U, which is pathetic considering it has a far lower price and a lot more games

      1. Hey man, how’s it going? Before I get, there’s a thing called “motherfucking spellchek.” You should check it out sometime :) FUCK YOU

    1. No it isn’t. Even with the poor sales of the Wii U, Nintendo can last for like 20-40 years because the 3DS is still selling a lot of units, and still selling a lot of games. The Wii U isn’t gonna be a flop. Don’t worry.

        1. it wont, nintendo apparently has so much money in the bank that if -by the way this was from an official search on their bank accout- they made no profits meaning nothing sells at all, it would take til 2052 for them to go bankrupt until they die so… Even if they lose this gen, they will still be here

          1. Look, I love Nintendo as much as the next guy, but I wish people would stop using this ‘fact’ as gospel. Just because they can survive until 2052 taking losses each year doesn’t mean they will.

They are a business, and business must make profit to survive. If they continued to make losses investors will start selling their shares meaning the overall share price will go down and Nintendo’s net worth (or their market cap) would be decreased further. No business will continue like this year after year – it’s absolutely ridiculous to think they could or would.

If the Wii U flops – it could quite easily spell the end of Nintendo home consoles.

The good news is, as history has taught us from only two years ago when Nintendo was in the same situation with the 3DS – once the must-have first party games come, sales will pick up massively.

Starting this month, the Wii U has pretty much has a must-have first/second party game coming out every month until Christmas (Pikmin 3, W101, Zelda WW, Tropical Freeze then SM3DW – I’m sure I’m missing a few others too) and then Mario Kart and Smash Bros next year.

I wouldn’t worry just yet – Nintendo will be just fine, they know what they’re doing!

        1. Then buy Pikmin 3 you idiot and you’ll have games. Also buy all the upcoming 1st and 3rd party Wii U games. If you don’t then you’re a hypocrite

                1. Um I did get information and reviews from PSN magazine also ignoring that people played at E3 too. Or did you forget that too?

                2. Knack is a joke…

If “particles” and “details” are the things that make the game great then whoever likes it is just sad…

Knack is just a barely “glorified” Dreamcast like game…

                    1. Nah, they only care about graphics when they can bad mouth other systems. When Nintendo graphics get bought into the equation, then they don’t care.

                    2. No I don’t care about visuals but when it comes to PS4 I was expecting earth shattering graphics but Knack could have been on PS3.

                    3. “particles” & “details”

I’m sorry, that has never meant someone talking about gameplay, 9/10 people talk about the graphics in that situation. Damage controlling faggot.

                    4. @Nintenlord: Are you stupid? He said “If “particles” and “details” are the things that make the game great then whoever likes it is just sad…”, meaning if you like that game just because of the graphics and not the gameplay, you’re a sad person. It’s not hard to get, just learn to read English.

                    5. “I said nothing about the graphics”
You just said Knack is a barely “glorified” Dreamcast like game.

                1. PSN magazine has already given us an early review of the game. And they didn’t have much positive to say about it…

It’s sad, it was among the only exclusive PS4 games that seemed interesting, along with The Witness (although only a timed exclusive)…

      1. Also to add to it, its actually selling fine in Japan or like how a normal console should in the first year, which is faster than the PS3. Its just Europe and US have been slow since Christmas.

        1. Hey, don’t spew shit on facts you don’t know. The ps3 sold about 40-50% better than the Wii U during this period. Stop distorting the facts to put nintendo in a better light. This is probably going to be their last console, now even the xbox 360 is selling better than the Pii U.

          1. Nintendo can survive many more decades without their systems being successful and xbone isnt out yet so stop distorting facts that put microsoft in a better light!

          2. Dude don’t twist things to suit your own need. The Fact is reach its first million units more than a month of head of the PS3 did when it launch:
            http://mynintendonews.com/2013/07/24/wii-u-has-sold-one-million-units-in-japan-since-launch/

Comparing Sony’s PS3s BEST year to the first year of Wii U is meaning less, but if you look both systems first year and if you actually took the time to read my comment you would have known that.

And no you are completely incorrect when it comes to Japan which I am specifically talking about. 50% would be double month in and month out since December and consoles always have a big boost at launch. In Japan the numbers show otherwise.

Again I am not talking about the other regions, but if you did you would also find the numbers weren’t great for the PS3 or the Xbox360 in those systems first year. They are actually very similar.

The only two systems that sold great in their first year was PS2 and the Wii, not even the 3DS or DS did well in their first year.

      2. Well, nintendo should really quit the home console business. It’ll be much better if they just stick on making games and continue their handheld career lol.
I don’t want my last memory of nintendo being shitty, it’s good to quit now while they’re still doing fine on the WiiU and leave good memories to us consumers.

          1. PS3 —> 2006
            Wii U —> 2012
why do you even compare this consoles… the times are different, the prices WERE different, i don´t know why there is so much hate against sony and microsoft from the nintendo fans, just because there are more games being developed for them (It is because the ps3 and xbox 360 are about 157 million consoles sold… that´s a sure win don´t you think?)

        1. Microsoft or Sony employee approaches above me! Dude and leave us with baseless drm xbox you must be an idiot.

    2. Xbox360 and PS3 were released and sold at a loss for 5 years, now you were saying? Please explain your economics lol.

  1. Good, I bought mine that I pre-ordered and paid of in installments for three month till launch. First time in a long time nintendo is selling a console at a loss. PS3 sold at a loss until a year and a half ago lol.

  2. I just got mine the last monday. Target was giving away a $50 giftcard which means my Wii U Deluxe was just $300. I got pikmin with the giftcard so it was a very good deal.

      1. then 2015…….( looks through book still flipping through book) nintendo is there any games in 2015 or is there going to be yet another drought……

          1. yeah….. hope the new zelda game is something fresh. really skyward sword sucked and TP was a little dull at times. also nintendo always does this we drought now and then 2014 huge line up of games then another drought!!!!!

  3. Reggie already said people would be waiting for awhile. The 3 year mark will be when it gets it’s price cut. 2014. Just like the Wii.

  4. This sounds bad but I’m glad it’s turning this way. That will teach Nintendo to stop being so stupid and lazy and not work their asses off to make a GOOD console. The Wii U is just a new version of the Wii, it’s not a brand-new console as they make it want to look like.

    1. “The Wii U is just a new version of the Wii”

So the PS4 and Xbox One are completely set aside from their predecessors right?

  5. I hope this reverses once the heavy hitter games release…and third party devs stop gimping their Wii U versions FFS

  6. somehow i fell like the Wii U has a bad image due to trolls, critics and the media, therefore a load of people have been put off by it

    1. No price cut… did you READ the article above? Wii U is already selling at a loss, NINTENDO CAN’T AFFORD ANOTHER PRICE DROP! 💋

  7. Developers and third parties have make games that will attract console buyers! Wii U has a lot of potencial as far as i can see. The Wii U Pad has a lot of potencial, Nintendo just has to make the right development bets! Great games make people buy consoles!

  8. Advertise it for pete sake Iwata spend some money to make posters, commercials, you name just do it make the world know that the wii u exist.

Because if the gaming world is becoming this need of “next gen” bullcrap I’ll finish my gaming history with this console. I remember a time when it was about games.

    1. Advertisements do nothing when there are no games coming out for the console. Just wait until a few months from now. That’s when Nintendo should start spending money on advertisements. 💋

  9. They should take the bullet and implement an official price-cut. They will more than make up for it with their first party and second party games. What they need now is the install base to grow.

  10. Now this should teach Ninten big wigs a lesson as they shouldn’t have underestimated the needed time to make HD games. It’s a rough start for them but knowing them, they’ll pick it up.

  11. … Honestly, they announced that they make profit after one game being sold for the Wii U once the console is bought. Literally, if they took out Nintendoland, they would be selling it at a profit.

    1. I don’t think you quite know how it works. One game sale gives them a profit because one game costs considerably less than $60 to produce. Depending on how efficient they are at it, it may cost them pennies to burn the game data to a disc. The amount they lose per Wii U is less than $60. So if they took Nintendo Land out, they would save a few pennies. Unless everyone who got a Wii U really really really wanted to buy Nintendo Land, they wouldn’t be making a profit by removing it. And considering how lackluster Nintendo Land was received compared to Wii Sports, I doubt it would be on the top of everyone’s wish list.

In essence, removing Nintendo Land would not significantly save them money on the Wii U. They would not be selling it at a profit. If we could go back in time and tell them not to make Nintendo Land because it wasn’t a platform seller, maybe we could save them some money in development costs for it but nothing else.

  12. They cant cut the price because the small, temporary boost to their already pathetic sales theyd get as a result wouldnt pay for itself as theres nothing on offer for wiiu that’s really that compelling to non wiiu owners in the first place. Its pretty much the same reason they dont advertise…what exactly would the ad say?

“We invite you to spend 400 dollars on a new game system that features BRAND NEW nintendo games that are half as good as the ones you stopped playing on your wii before we abandoned it…”

“This new system ALSO features the worst versions of a few popular thirdparty franchises that youve already either bought or got used to playing on other consoles, too.
We invite you now to buy our system now so you can be one of the first to start waiting for next christmas where we might have our crap together?”

Also, when people say the wiiu has no games, they dont mean that it literally has no games, idiots. It means that there’s no games that justify an investment in wiiu. The first party offerings ALL look thrown together and the 3rd party stuff is mostly coming to consoles people already have as fully featured and graphically superior products

      1. wii U up to date has 124 games now and confirmed for later release
and PS4 has 84 confirmed games
        know what you talk

  13. So what? The PS3 and 360 were sold at a loss for many years until they were able to reduce production costs. They succeeded, so will the Wii U.

  14. nobody confirmed it was still selling at a loss. The loss from the Wii U is due to marketing and development costs they have incurred ramping up their software launches. When the Wii U doesn’t sell, these costs aren’t recouped. As soon as more consoles sell those costs will take care of themselves. Truly a misleading article. Do some friggin research

  15. I don’t think nintendo is going anywhere as they are still making money. I have not bought wii u just yet I do plan to thinking at Christmas time may be a good bundle. Time will tell. Don’t hate just play. Have fun
    Peace

  16. Well they have no one to blame but themselves!
Jumping the gun on a system that had poor line up of games and relying on the unreliable commitments of fickle game developers who promised to release games for the platform only to jump ship with the announcement of Sony and Microsofts Next Gen systems.

Next time Ninty, sit on the fucking fence and wait out the bitches to share their wares first.
Or at least, bring something thats head and shoulders above expectations!

    1. I bet no one would say anything if the other 2 created consoles barely more powerful than the Wii U…

  17. If Nintendo would hurry the heck up and release different colors other than boring black and white, I would buy a Wii U right now. I just don’t want those colors. And Pikmin 3 is the only game on Wii U so far that I care about, so I’m not too impatient about waiting.

  18. Better to drop the price and sell at a loss than not sell at all and be discontinued from retailer shelves.

  19. Who cares that’s Nintendo’s problem not mines. Let Nintendo executives worry. As long as my Wii U games are arriving. And BTW why on earth would you idiots a think Nintendo should put more colors to Wii Us if the sells are down? It cost more money adding green red and whatever other color. It it still wouldn’t help sell. Software is greater than adding colors to hardware in sales.

    1. Just saying, there’s people like me out there who is waiting for new colors before they buy a Wii U. If no new colors are ever made, I may NEVER own one.

      1. Will if the Wii U ain’t making a profit and added more money to bring in more colors that will not boost sales yet cost more money.

  20. How about focus on demanding Nintendo to release “Daigasso! Band Brothers P” to America?
I’m getting sick of seeing Band Brothers/Jam With The Band not coming to America

  21. *sigh*
Hey Nintendo, how about next time you don’t rush in a console, k? There seems to be a mountain of dust where my Wii U is placed.

  22. I am sick of people saying that if Wii U fails, it doesn’t matter because Nintendo has billions in cash. If that is true, why are they so cheap, and they didn’t put a top of the line CPU and 8 Gig’s of RAM in Wii U? If they are so rich, they can afford to spend money to make money.

    1. Was the nintendo wii top of the line architecture? No and that shit sold millions have u not paid attention.

      1. In the first 3-4 years and then it dropped. It also only cost $250 new and everyone was interested because of Wii Sports, which they only followed up with one Wii Sports Resort. The Wii U sales are not going to increase because of Pikmin 3 or Super Mario 3D World or even LOZ WW HD, maybe if they brought out Mario Kart U this Christmas but Nintendo was cheap when designing the CPU and RAM, now they are hurting. Nintendo was cheap.

        1. Take a look at the history of gaming…

Those with the most powerful systems always sold the least…

So no point in investing on a very powerful machine only to sell even worse…

          1. What are you talking about, the NES was superior to anything, the Super NES was superior to the Genesis and the reason the Genesis caught on was power. The reason the PS1 sold was perceived superior power and the same with the PS2, it doesn’t matter that the GameCube was more powerful than the PS2, the PS2 was perceived to be more powerful because of the DVD player.

            1. Looking at something as more powerful doesn’t mean anything when it comes to the most powerful system’s specs which is what the Nintendo haters always brag about…

And less powerful systems also means cheaper prices which is why they always sell the most in their generations…

Even if the games are great like the Gamecubes…

So many great games and yet it got beaten by the PS2…

              1. Don’t be suprised, the PS2 had built-in DVD-playback, and was cheaper than most DVD-players at the time. So, very many non-gamers bought the console for just that, a DVD-player.

  23. Exactly why Nintendo can’t do another price drop. So people, STOP ASKING AND BUY IT ALREADY!!! It’s already cheap! 💋

    1. When the other 2 consoles release. No, it won’t be. I don’t know what delusional planet people are from to think the Wii U is cheap for what it offers.

  24. It was just stated just the other day that Sony is losing money on the PS4 right out the gate.
Sony is losing money left and right. Has Nintendo had to sell something like three buildings to just turn a profit. Has Nintendo had to fire entire buildings worth of people and throw them out onto the streets? I don’t think so… So for people BITCHING that Nintendo is CHEAP you need to look at who your backing… Give it 10 years… Hell give it 5 years… I’m sure you will hear about Sony having money issues… again.

Nintendo YES is having a tough time with sales right now but the right software ALWAYS turns consoles around. If Nintendo was to JUST release a another Animal Crossing for the Wii U look at all the sales they would make from people who are buying it for the 3DS. Same can be said for Mario Kart and Smash Bros… Do I NEED to even mention a new Legend Of Zelda? SOFTWARE sells SYSTEMS. PERIOD! PS3 had the same issue but once they got out God of War 3 and Uncharted 2 and Killzone systems started to sell…

People or should I say KIDS need to stop jumping the fucking gun and pointing fingers and laughing at Nintendo owners for what… slow sales? It has not even been a full year I would say by the end of the year AFTER the holidays I can see Nintendo sitting at 8 to 9 million Wii U owners and that’s a decent first year.

So to conclude this fucking rant… The people bitching about Nintendo (You know who you are) NEED to shut the fuck up… Sit the fuck down… and wait and see how things play out.

    1. Fuck off punk, all of that is nonsequitor. Nintendo was cheap designing the Wii U CPU and RAM period. Fuck you bitches.

      1. Another example of a Sonyan that has to take on imature insults…

What you are all doing on a Nintendo dedicated site is beyond me…

Why don’t you go play your precious PS games if you love them so much instead of wasting your times in here?…

Or is Nintendo so much fun that even a site like this is more fun than all your Sonyan games ever created?…

      2. Oh, so it would be a better fucking idea to bump up the price by $100 just to have better specs?
AND then you’re asking Nintendo to cut the price NOW?

        Fucking hypocrites.

      3. So if the Hardware is so cheap in the Wii U, how come after 10 months out on the market you can’t find out all its specs? How powerful is it do you know are do you just assume it’s weak because of the ported games?

      4. They are cheap, you’re right. The reason its so expensive is the gamepad. I think if the gamepad were off to the side and the system were bundled with 2 pro controllers instead, Wii U could have been a lot more powerful for the same price.

    1. Unfortunately the common n00bite is susceptible to the repetitious fecal regurgitation attack used frequently by our political leaders.

      1. “N00bite”…

Wonderful word, I will borrow it as well from now on…

But indeed they all behave like those corrupted politicians repeating themselves over and over and over until the lesser cerebral intelligence N00bites believes in them…

  25. My gaming list for 2013: A (black) WII U!!!!!!, DK Country Tropical Freeze, Pikmin 3, and Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag. Hugs!

  26. I’m pretty sure the wiiu isn’t doom -_- it hasn’t been a year yet… Gosh dam when will people learn about these things. Ill understand it when it’s been out in the market for 3-4 years.

3ds had lots of complaints in the first year… Until Nintendo gave up and lowered there price, the 3ds had a great price point of $250 when it was first released

When they lowered it, everyone praised the system and rushed to stores to buy it, and look at its success…

Is that all we do nowadays, complaints left and right?

I own both a 3ds and psvita and bought both at launch, I’m happy with the money I spent on them.

Both have great games we all can enjoy

I’m actually happy that Sony hasn’t lowered the price of the psvita yet. ( people complain about it as well, but look at what the vita can do besides the 3ds it is well worth every penny)

  27. If they have sold 3,6M consoles, and over 8M software, the loss cant be that bad, if 1 software sale was supposed to make the console profitable.

  28. If everything goes right, 7 million units by the end of the year, 9 million units by end of fiscal year if Mario Kart releases before then. then EA can fuck themselves up. Ubi can give us The Division and Crew, Sonyans will respect us with their second place spot and those stupid Xbox dummies will bow on camera.

      1. We don’t have to, evidence all around you…

How about you go help your precious Sonyan Legion with their…

Whatever that handheld system is called…

        1. Show me this “evidence”.

          I’d rather play Pikmin 3 :D

You mean the Vita? Awesome system, just a bit lacking with the games, I’m sure that’ll be fixed come gamescom.

            1. The problem with the Vita is that Sony is trying to make it be something that it isn’t. They’re trying to make it be like a home console when it’s a handheld console.

              1. Well to be fair, the PS Vita is actually being promoted as an optional controller for the PS4 nowadays which ofcourse if even worse…

  29. hey guys hahahahahah (head twitching) i i got the solution, hahahahaah!!!!!! (grabs gamepad and starts smashing it with a sludge hammer) *grabs pro controller* all nintendo has to do is replace the gamepad with a pro controller, huge profit!!!! nintendo is saved and look they arnt a huge gimmick either!!!!! hahahahahaahahahhahha (head still twitching) hahahahahahahahah!!!!!

        1. I disagree, without the gamepad it seriously is an overpowered wii.

and it wouldn’t be any different from ps3/360, only to be totally left behind by ps4/xb1 just cause the specs are on such different levels.

dumping the gamepad is the dumbest thing they could do.

          1. if it wasnt for the gamepad the wii u would be powerful and get 3rd partyu support. without the gamepad nintnedo would profit, without the gamepad they wouldnt be a big gimmick. without the gamepad nintendo would of called the wii u something else.

            1. in the scenario you’re mentioning now there has never been a gamepad, and yes maybe/probably things would have been different.

but as of now to drop the gamepad, it would mean the console cannot differentiate from the others on any level anymore and can only rely on the “nintendo” games.

              it would mean.
weaker specs then the next gen consoles, no dvr, no account system, lack of games etc etc. on top of that competing with cheaper ps3’s and 360’s for the next 2 years.

not to even mention the R&D that nintendo has put into this thing, they cannot waste this kinda money by just throwing the project away.

im far from satisfied with this console, but it’s too late for those kind of changes now.

      1. Sorry, I have no idea how “ehentai” got here, but as I was saying, didnt they already “announce” that the Wii U is being sold at a loss when it was first launched?

  30. I’m seriously beginning to think Nintendo should just become handheld-only. They would still maintain their success and they would still have a platform to put out their franchises on. Wii U is nothing new. It tried to feed off of the success of its predecessor while trying to utilize the dual screen abilities of the DS/3DS.

Honestly, all Nintendo would have to do is put out a device that allows someone to play their handheld via the TV (similar to what the Wii U does with gamepad) if they desire to do so.

Looking back on the past couple of years, I’ve spent a heck of a lot more time playing my DS/3DS than my Wii and now my WIi U. With today’s technology, I’m sure Nintendo could tailor any ideas they have to fit their handhelds. Just look at the upcoming Smash Bros.

  31. Pingback: Nintendo Confirms That Wii U Is Still Being Sold At A*Loss

  32. Nintendo Wii U is the PS Vita in result, both systems have been abandon by third party publishers, both consoles are too expensive and need a price cut, both systems lack any interesting, must have games, both systems have small game library. If Ninyendo cuts the price and makes awesome games it may help the Wii U, but I don’t see it beating the PS4 or Xbox1 because everyone wants a more powerful console, Nintendo screwed up not putting a more powerful CPU and RAM in Wii U. You can buy a computer with an Intel Core i5 with 8 Gig of RAM for the price of the Wii U. Sony made the Vita too powerful, with portable consoles, power isn’t as important as it is in home consoles just yet.

    1. yes.

usually what company’s do is take an initial loss (how tiny or big that may be) but assume the console will sell well.

if the console does sell well, they produce more, and components will become cheaper and they will eventually turn that initial loss into profit.

unfortunately wiiu doesn’t sell..well you get the story.
