Investment Site Says Apple’s iPhone Controller Accessory Could Be The Death Of Nintendo

Investment site The Motley Fool is reporting that Logitech’s recently unveiled iPhone controller, the PowerShell, could ultimately mean the death of Nintendo. The publication says that Apple is already more important than Nintendo as a recent study showed that there are 126 million mobile gamers. In comparison, Nintendo has sold about 35 million 3DS consoles worldwide. However, it should be mentioned that Apple has yet to announce a first party controller for the system.

But Nintendo’s reliance on handheld gaming is dangerous, and potentially fatal. With Logitech’s new controller, Apple’s phones could finally get the sorts of the games that attract core gamers. When that happens, the reasons to own Nintendo’s handheld will plummet.

    1. If buttons were the key, mobile games wouldn’t be so popular to begin with

Every now and then someone announce a controller peripheral to mobile devices and everyone thinks that means the death of Nintendo

      1. Such a simple comment made me laugh to tears. It’s pitiful people consider stupid iPhone games more fun than Zelda or Mario kart lol.

    2. How many Android controllers are there already. Clearly this isn’t a new idea, and certainly won’t create a new desire to play on phones

    3. nintendo will never die. there will always be true gamers out their. we just need 3rd party support. like this masterpiece:

      1. Judging by the amount of comments these controversial articles get, I’d assume they post stuff like this to get the as many views and with that money as possible.

    1. They post one of these Nintendo Doom stories a day, its the equivalent of crying wolf.

The other funny thing is you could replace smart phone with N-Gage phone and 3DS with DS and you have a story from half a decade ago.

      1. Or Sony’s Xperia Play with Playstation Library, and that’s about two years ago? Why is it always the american analyst that have these big thoughts about Apple? Is it some sort of patriotism?

  1. “It will attract core games”
Yet it only has a D-pad and face buttons when the 3DS got flack for only having one circle pad. Nice add-on, but I don’t think this’ll be killing Nintendo handhelds anytime soon.

    1. If I wanted to play mobile games I’ll get a 3ds or vita, period games on mobile are OK and there are the occasional gems, but the majority of Sony and Nintendo games are gold

  2. What does that have to do with Nintendo? If anything, that could impact all gaming hardware companies (Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft, to a lesser extent).

I really don’t get the point of this news. Bad, very bad journalism.

    1. People think only kids play Nintendo games and the release of a controller you attach to a phone will make kids drop Nintendo consoles for some reason.

    2. It’s just another “OMG Nintendo is doomed LOL” article. I could understand someone theorizing Nintendo dropping out of the home console market because of how brutally the Weak U is doing, but they aren’t getting knocked out of the handheld market any time soon.

  3. Pingback: Motely fool opens it's mouth again

  4. They won’t have the same games as Nintendo though, only crappy high scores, and mobile stuff. Tired of reading that people think Nintendo will be over or the ‘death’ of Nintendo, I don’t think that would happen.

  5. Why did you post this?

Not much rep for this site anymore, seems like it’s only trying to cause chaos among the fanbase. Waiting for this to break out into a fight.

    1. It brakes out everyday, in every single post.

Besides having all the obnoxious trolls, the owners of this blog act like the grand, supreme trolls around. And I’m sick of it.

  6. No. Just no. They are not mobile gamers. They are simply people who bought a cell phone, that happens to play games. NOBODY bought an iPhone for ONLY gaming purposes. They bought them to make calls, send e-mails, surf the internet, send texts, listen to music, oh, and maybe play some angry birds. iPhone and Nintendo handhelds = Apples and Oranges. Plain and simple.

  7. “With Logitech’s new controller, Apple’s phones could finally get the sorts of the games that attract core gamers. When that happens, the reasons to own Nintendo’s handheld will plummet.”

No hope for the Vita then, eh? ;)

Also, from ‘The Motley Fool’? Not legit enough.

  8. I doubt it.
    A) That mobile gamer number is very much skewed. The majority of those that play games on the phone don’t actually pay for many of those games, they just sit through the ad.
    B) You’re telling me that some kid would rather buy these and all 2 of the high quality games on iPhone rather than a Mario, Zelda, or Pokemon?
    C) Nintendo’s been through worse, and it seems that every year there’s “The Next Big Thing That Will Kill Nintendo!” and they’re still kicking.

  9. yeah, I’d like to see an ios game with the quality of the likes of re revelations, oot 3d, albw, fe awakening and then we’ll talk.

  10. So sad that we live in an age in wich only the only thing taken into consideration is how many gigs something has and not what is supposed to do. Any one here wants to make a video game doomsday bunker with me?

  11. The only problem is the 3DS is currently thriving on mostly Nintendo-published games (Monster Hunter is the exception). As long as Pokemon, Mario, Zelda, etc. are only coming out on Nintendo systems, they should be fine.

  12. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA OH GOD, OH, GEEZ… THAT’S, THAT’S SO HILARIOUS HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

  13. Sure, the enormous price, the lacking amount of buttons and the fact that there won’t be a huge amount of serious games won’t be a problem for a lot of people.

  14. Speaking on how things like this have existed for awhile i doubt this one will be any better than other ones. So yea keep saying stuff like that lol

  15. this study is stupid since every mobile user can browse the gaming section without purchasing anything. and there’s many reason why to purchase a true gaming device.

    1. You hardly if ever report and negative Nintendo news and when you do you twist it.

But when something bad happens for Sony or Microsoft… Oh boy you post that shit and your sheep eat that shit up!

  16. Well they forgot to mention that not every person who has an iphone only bought it for games, that many people have an iphone because it’s something they use everyday for communications, whereas the 3DS is a gaming device made for games.

So it’s only logical that the iPhone is outselling the 3DS from the point that it’s something you can’t live without everyday because of communication. Comparing a mobile device to a dedicated handheld/console is an unfair comparison.

  17. “Investment site The Motley Fool is reporting that Logitech’s recently unveiled iPhone controller, the PowerShell, could ultimately mean the death of Nintendo” HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHA *cough* *cough* *cough* *hazz* oh oh my god xD that’s so funny, yes i’m suppose to believe someone with Fool in their name get fucking real XD

  18. Yeah, because casting something that tall around isn’t awkward…
Casual gamers don’t feel the need for this and hardcore gamers want buttons and bigger games like Mario, Zelda, …

I’m sure Nintendo still has a future and who knows what the future will bring, a Nintendo Phone? Giving investors their need for mobile crap and gamers the need for buttons and Nintendo games…

    1. Also, aren’t there like hundreds of other asecories that do the same thing?

And the fact that home consoles still sell more than PC’s tell me that the need for one device that does everything isn’t that big… Heck, I even Cary my phone, DS and tablet to school every day and I don’t think that’s bad.

I even see that as a plus because I can still call my mom when my DS is broken and I can still play games on the train home when my phone battery died…

  19. SherlockWillFightBilbo

Just because I have Ruzzle or Pocket Tanks on my Galaxy doesn’t mean I’m going to go out and buy a controller for it. Nor does it mean I’m never going to buy a Nintendo console. Everyone these days has a smartphone. You really can’t compare it to a dedicated handheld gaming device.

People still watch TV, read the newspaper, and play sports outside. The Internet and sports games haven’t killed those off.

    1. The Apple Armada is insignificant next to the power of the holy N…

And what in N’s name is a Candy Crush?…

  20. I actually chuckled when I read the title, I never fucking do that XD

Will this impact Nintendo handhelds? Maybe but why do people go for the handhelds? The exclusives of course, I mean some of the best games this gen have been from a handheld. Fire Emblem Awakening is apparently one of the best RPGs ever made

If Apple gets good games, ok cool but it won’t live up to any legacy of any of the Big 3

  21. Hahaha is this a joke? I don’t think super smash bros, legend of Zelda, Pokemon, animal crossing, and mario games are going to be on iPhone lmao. The only games mobile gamers play is cut the rope and angry birds, have fun using a Logitech controller while playing those amazing games. Nintendo is Nintendo, they may make retarded decisions 90% of the time, but that is what makes Nintendo what it is and we love them for that.

  22. There’s a huge difference in the type of games available on 3DS and smart phones. I’m sorry, but when a Pokemon game comes out people drop their damn smart phone and pick up Pokemon! Candy Crush and Angry Birds are fun to play when you have a few minutes to kill, but otherwise they don’t hold a lot of play value. They’re made to be picked up for a few minutes and played and put down. They’re not meant to have much longevity like 3DS or even Vita games. I’m sorry, I’d choose on of the dedicated handhelds over my smart phone any day. In fact, most of the games installed I haven’t played in over a month, and when I did it was for only a few days.

  23. Death of Nintendo? LOL! Keep dreaming. They won’t have all of Nintendo’s awesome games. Nintendo’s franchise characters and games will keep them around forever.

  24. But, you have to remember….
Nintendo is a major holder in gaming.
If it falls, its going to pull a lot with it.
Including Sony, Microsoft, and virtually almost every gaming company.
Plus, look at this thing. It looks like the Vita’s (Which is a wonderful system, by the way) mentally-handicapped brother. Nintendo isn’t going to die until the video game industry dies, which won’t be in our lifetime.

  25. The day games like Angry Birds and Candy Crush become more respected than Mario and Zelda is the day I eat every pair of socks I own and jump into a Stargate naked.

    1. Count me in! Only I will leave one pair of socks uneaten so that they can be the only article of clothing I wear when I jump through the Stargate. Just because.

  26. The only thing that would be “death” to Nintendo would be Apple entering the HOME console race. It’s been a decade since mobile devices have been competing against Nintendo handheld’s and not one single inch has budged on Nintendo’s part.

Now if Apple enters the console race…….that could be bad.

  27. Well between this controller ad on, that not many people would actually buy, and the amount of emulator out there, Nintendo only have two choices:

1.- Put in to sale their old games in to the smartphone market

    or

2.- Sending the ninjas in a killer spread to hunt down everyone with a emulator and rom of their games.

Which one do you think is more plausible to happen?

I myself i’m going to star deleting somethings out of my PC, just for safety.

  28. Yeah, mobile “gamers”. Might as well call everyone who has a bike a bicyclist, everyone with a camera a photographer, anyone who has gone to the theater a cinema junky and those with a pair of headphones a music enthusiast. Just playing games does not make you a gamer, being passionate or enthusiastic about games makes you a gamer. Those 126 million “gamers” who have smartphones are not gamers, they play angry birds, fruit ninja or candy crush just to kill some time. The 35 million who bought a 3DS are gamers, they care enough about gaming that they acquired a separate piece of tech so they can have a unique gaming experience on the go. Smartphones are not, in the state they are continuing on in, optimal for gaming and pose no danger to dedicated gaming devices.

    1. They are clearly Nintendo haters who like to get hits through controversy and trolling. I hate how people can even consider them professionals, because they are clearly not if they can’t act like it.

  29. Not a chance. I know for a fact that the so called “126 million mobile gamers” play games in between receiving meals at restaurants, waiting for appointments, while watching the news, etc. None of them play video games like hardcore gamers do. They don’t give a shit about the controller. Especially when the two most popular games are Candy Crush and Angry Birds which is easier to play WITH YOUR FINGERS on the touch screen….

  30. do people just not understand why most people buy nintendo systems? it’s for the nintendo games. not the graphics, not the portability, not the apps, but the games. nintendo will be fine. if anyone thinks that smartphones and handhelds are the same audience, they’re retarded.

  31. HA!

“126 million mobile gamers.” You mean, “126 million people that have games on their phones?”

Oh, yeah, bad news for Nintendo.

People that play games on their phones are not ‘gamers.’ It’s a totally different market, and people really need to stop lumping the two together.

  32. If smartphones were going to kill dedicated handheld gaming devices, it would have happened already. It’s going to be very difficult to get a device that is able to both be a phone effectively whilst also being a games console effectively.

  33. Yay, more articles about the prediction of different technologies!! Too bad these things are rarely true and when they are it’s either a self fulfilling prophecy or just luck. I wish people would shut up instead of pretending they had any knowledge of the future. Seriously, mobile gaming was supposed to destroy the 3DS already, yet the 3DS is doing financially well.

  34. “When that happens, the reasons to own Nintendo’s handheld will plummet.”

So we just gonna pretend that Pokemon X & Y, Fire Emblem Awakening, Kid Icarus Uprising, Super Mario 3D Land, LoZ: OoT 3D, Mario Kart 7, Starfox 64 3D, Professor Layton, Mario and Luigi Dream Team, Ace Attorney, and Animal Crossing New Leaf didn’t happen?

Apparently that and the surplus of other good games for the 3DS.

  35. Nintendo has ALWAYS OWNED THE HANDHELD MARKET. Ever since the Gameboy. Its is PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR NINTENDO TO FAIL AT HAND HELD GAMING. And “Phone” Gamers are not the CORE GAMES.

  36. “INVESTMENT SITE HOPES THAT APPLE’S IPHONE CONTROLLER ACCESSORY COULD BE THE DEATH OF NINTENDO” more like.

  37. Didn’t TMF just report on what something else that will be the death of Nintendo like a week or two ago? Can they come up with better stories?

  38. The “X” and “Y” buttons are in the wrong spot. For that reason alone, this will fail. We must have our buttons in the right placement or it’s NO DEAL!!

;) Seriously… The 3DS is laughing at this right now.

  39. Sickr is a troll and he just punked you with his click bait bullshit article. Fool is a phony site and Sickr knows it but it gets him clicks so he posts it.

    1. Ah. You must be one of sickr’s many “I wish I had a successful blog” enemies….

You think we care why? We are not here to make money or change the world, we are here for entertainment and news. Sorry your blog sucks and you are some jealous, past friend of Sickr, but fuck off while we have a good time.

  40. I can play Candy Crush with a D-pad now?! Fuck yeah! Now I can stop playing Fire Emblem Awakening and A Link Between Worldds and get to some REAL gaming on my iphone.

  41. get fucking real. These type things were already out for androids and other devices. Is Nintendo died now. No. A phone is a fucking phone. And the iPhone is gonna make nintendo vanish because some phone accessory that no one is going use for cheaply made app games is just something an illiterate fool would say

  42. That article is illogical…

What “games” support this accessory? The majority of iOS games are touchscreen based. The iControlPad was made years before this was made and supports BOTH iPhone and Android. Is that iControlPad (very similar to this one) predict the death of the Nintendo Handheld? Absolutely not. And…it requires jailbreaking the iPhone if they want to use this for emulators.

The iPhone5 is a tall phone. Adding this accessory to the long phone makes it longer. Fitting into the pocket? Plausible, but not when you are sitting down.

The way I looked at the design is awful. No slider pad at all (the iControlPad has 2 slider pads).

I prefer the iControlPad over this, BUT still have my Nintendo 3DS because it is an amazing gaming device.

  43. I wouldn’t fret, everyone knows this is BS. Nintendo isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Those baby mentality, non-challenging games will be with us for many years to come.

  44. Wait & See.
The thing is, I will, myself, never play on a mobile. I’m a gamer, and a lot of people are just like me and won’t buy a mobile to play their games.
No, I don’t think Nintendo will die from this.

    1. Though, Nintendo could lost a shit ton of money. Iwata is gonna get what he deserves for forgetting about Nintendo’s gamer core and trying to attract casual people.

  45. That controller won’t kill Nintendo. Most people who play games on their phones do it as an afterthought. A fun little diversion. “Mobile gamers” aren’t serious gamers, for the most part. That’s the difference. People who buy dedicated gaming handhelds like the 3DS bought them to play fully fleshed-out games like Fire Emblem Awakening, RE Revelations, A Link Between Worlds, Mario Kart, Monster Hunter, etc. Most people who play games on their phone don’t take games seriously enough to buy that controller add-on.

  46. A silly article on a even more silly website.
Sometimes, my friends from Mynintendonews.com, you shouldn´t take so seriously everything that is published about Nintendo.

  47. Thats it I’m sold, i’ll go buy a new i phone every year for 300 to 500 $would just so that i can keep upto date and play the newest and hottest game on my pgone that i wanna kill the bqttry on in less then 3a hours! It all makes sense now. I’ll never want to play pokemon or mario or zelda ever again. Its nothing but angry birds and mobile minecraft for me! * heavy sacrasim* in case you couldn’t tell.

  48. Yeah, because if gamers love anything it’s third party controllers.

Hey, does anyone else remember when the PSP foretold of certain doom for Nintendo? LOL

  49. On a side note, I really tried saving money for the last two years and making do with my iPhone and iPad for all of my mobile gaming needs. There are (some) really great iOS games. I figured that I had spent so much on portable hardware that I should focus on building a game library for that.

    Guess what I’m getting for Christmas this year. That’s right… a 3DS.

  50. You know if this thing would impact handheld gamin, it would mean that Nintendo would release and develop their own gamin phone. I dont get why people think that Nintendo just gives up in a fight and dont fight back. Nintendo didnt never gave up, Virtual boy was fail and they came back, N64 wasnt commercial succes even when it made profit but they kept fightin, GC same as 64 profit but not commercial and battle continued. Nintendo will never give up so easily especially in handheld area which is their biggest thing. They could simply team up with the likes of Samsung or other mobile maker and make gamin phone. I seriously hate how they always think its over in one night. Even Sega almost destroyed themselfs before they gave up, they are from japan they have freakin samurai attitude rather going down with glory than gave themselfs up to enemies.

  51. They just don’t get it. It’s all about the games.

    We want to play games!

A Link Between Worlds, man. That’s all.

  52. I have the iPhone 5, I have games on it that I may play on work for about 5-10 mins, did I buy any of them, NO. I also have a 3ds that I play on work for about 30-60 mins + once I have the time, did I buy any of the games, YES, over 15 of them.

  53. Oh yes. Because a poorly designed iPhone controller will kill off a multi-billion dollar company just like that. Lets all just ignore the fact that there are dozens of other smart phone controllers out there. Some that actually look fun to use, and almost no one uses them. I’d sure like to play Candy Crush with a fucking controller!

Even if Apple were to advertise the product as much as they do with the iPhone I can guarantee you consumers would just look the other way. Nintendo is doing just fine with the 3DS. You know why? It’s because of the ever growing library of software, and developer support that’s behind the system. You will never see games like Monster Hunter 3 U, or, Sonic Lost World on a smart phone. These are the games that are actually worth putting time into when you play them. And people realize this. It’s not just some puzzle game or, a point and tap game you’d only get like, what? Ten minutes of enjoyment from before it becomes boring?

These “journalists” or, “annalists” or, whatever you want to call them really need to stop thinking that smart phones will kill off dedicated hand held gaming consoles. It’s just ridiculous.

  54. Well maybe in US, but strangely enough I hear that more women above 30 years + (i even hear a 76 years woman was a core gmer) in the UK play video game and it’s booming. In the same study they don’t care about mobile gaming cause their find it boring and good to play when you are on the bus or the doctor. At the moment Xbox 360 get the benefit of it cause their children has a xbox but I do believe they start to have they say on which console to buy now and I have a good hope Nintendo will be the winner.

  55. Somehow got recommended this article 12 years later. I think in hindsight we can consider this one of the worst gaming predictions of all time. Since then Nintendo have basically gone 100% handheld and are significantly more successful than they were back in 2013. iPhone controllers…are a thing I guess? I’ve never seen anyone actually use one. And most of them are bad knock-offs of Nintendo’s Joy-Con design for the Switch haha.
