Fox News believes that 2014 could be Nintendo’s year, providing they get things right. The news publication recently got the chance to speak to Cindy Gordon, Nintendo’s vice president of corporate affairs, who stated that the company is feeling really good about their ability to compete against the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. “We’re standing apart offering variety and value,” Gordon said. “There’s no question that we are the best offering for families this year and that Nintendo is the best choice for family gaming.” Here’s the conclusion that Fox News came too.
The company clearly has ground to make up. But with a strong line-up of family-friendly games and a competitive price, Nintendo is not to be dismissed. If the company can keep it up, 2014 could be the year of Nintendo, and the Wii U may go from laughingstock to one of the biggest turnarounds in gaming history. If there’s one company that can do it, it’s Nintendo.

Stating the obvious, from a source that’s questionable anyway, because it’s Fox News, and that’s an ambivalence all in itself.
But yes, we do feel that 2014 could well be Nintendo’s year. 2013 was most definitely the year of the 3DS, so there’s every chance 2014 could be the Wii U’s year (no matter how slim it may be).

My issue is mainly with the channel (not familiar with the website and its articles). Fox News (and possibly to a degree MSNBC) has the most unprofessional reporters who can never stay impartial and keep interrupting people they’ve invited unless they don’t agree with them. Having a news report to say that Santa is not black does not give credibility to the channel.

Nintendo systems might be struggling right now, and the company has made decisions I don’t always agree with, but the fact remains that they consistently develop and/or publish some of the most artfully crafted games that consistently get high ratings from nearly every professional critic. If you love videogames and appreciate good game design you can appreciate what Nintendo is doing. Even if you don’t love them, hating on them makes you look kind of foolish to other gamers.

That having been said, you listed six significant “adult” titles for the N64, and I don’t doubt Wii U will offer at least that many when all’s said and done. I’ve already played ACIII, RE Revelations, and Mass Effect III, and I’m hungry for some titles that aren’t ports, but at least we know X, Bayonetta 2, now Hyrule Warriors, and surely more are on their way.

If Nintendo realizes that it is each individual family’s decision to decide to what is a “family-friendly” game for them to play and starts making games that cover ALL genres and not just platformers and party games then 2014 can indeed be their year.
In addition to making games that appeal to children alone, games that appeal to families alone, they need to make games that appeal to ADULTS alone as well because it is the ADULTS that spend the most money
Everyday gaming is not something families do because they are doing other things. A lot of time outside of the house. Playing the game becomes more of a supplement It’s what the core gamer does. So if you want the Wii U to have strong sales yo need to have more games he appeal to those whom gaming is a part of their everyday life in addition to those who only play the game on weekends or when company comes over.
Nintendo meant for the NES to be a family-friendly device hence the name ‘Famicom’ which is shortened for “Family Computer.” However it was the core gamers (people my age) that made the NES a monster. Begging our parents to take us to Toys’ R’ Us, Kay-Bee Toys, K-Mart, Target, or wherever games were sold to buy us the newest games. It was us that took our paper route, lawn-cutting, babysitting money to go buy the newest games. It was us that would trade games with each other at recess after we had flipped the game (80’s terminology for finishing a game) an innumerable amount of times. That trend continue through the next few consoles. As we grew up Nintendo grew with us and rewarded us with games that would appeal to our age group. Yeah we enjoyed playing Mario but we also enjoyed playing GoldenEye007. Yeah we enjoyed playing Super Smash Bros, but we also enjoyed playing Killer Instinct Gold. We enjoyed playing Luigi’s Mansion, but we also enjoyed playing Eternal Darkness.
That is what Nintendo needs to think about. Balance. Nintendo simply needs to go back to doing what they did before. With the NES, SNES, N64, and Gamecube EVERYBODY got what they wanted. It’s time to go back to that philosophy.

True, not everyone likes to play wiisports or carnival games like some of the Nintendo fanboys on this site.
You have to remember, it wasn’t Nintendo who made Ghouls ‘n Ghosts, that was Capcom. Data East made Werewolf, then there were companies like Konami, Jaleco, Square, and countless others. These were the third parties. Midway (Netherrealm) made Mortal Kombat, Rareware made Killer Instinct, and Nintendo owned NONE of these IP’s. Nintendo has no control whether a game comes to their system, unless, in the case of Bayonetta 2, where they PAID for the game’s publishing. Nintendo only has full control of their OWN IP’s, and can only offer the consoles. It’s up to the third party developers to bring their games to Nintendo, and if they don’t want to, that’s their choice. Of course, given how precarious the situation is with third party giants, they SHOULD bring them to the Wii U. Every little bit helps.
We just have to have some HOPE ;)

Actually, given the built-in DRM of the PC, I only use mine for free indie gaming. Sony will have games Nintendo won’t, as will the Spybox FAIL, but given that I’m keeping myself as far from PRISM as I can, it’s Wii U/PS4/Indie PC for me.
If they can get their games out on time with no 3-4 month droughts, then yeah, 2014 belongs to the Wii Underdog.

I personally think that this time Sony should win from a money standpoint because I don’t want them and their systems to vanish. Support, games and image isn’t a problem for them.

Microsoft, isn’t really on my radar anymore. I wasn’t a fan of their first systembecause I preferred the PS2 and the Gamecube, I played a lot on the 360…..until I migrated to PC and I don’t intend to get an Xbox One when I can get the better versions of multiplats and more exclusives on the PS4 and/or my computer. Also, they keep the right to change their policies. I don’t hate microsoft, I just don’t have any interest in their console.
There is no telling what might happen. For all we know (as much as most people would HATE this) Microsoft could be working on some amazing game that will sell Xbox Ones like crazy and win the so called “war.” It’s doubtful, but like I said, anything can happen.

If you follow Fox news like I do, you would know they have a specialist for everything. Adam Shaw is the man who wrote this article who is known for his work on the BBC and ITV, He is technically a “business” journalist, but has dabbled in videogame news in the past. In fact he was the one who posted the Fox News review on A Link Between World; praising the game on November 26, 2013.
Everyone here is forgetting how long it takes to gather up a team, plan a game out, then make it. Knowing Nintendo they probably only started this process 8 months ago when they noticed the system wasn’t selling. Nintendo is making all these games everyone keeps complaining about, and that they never announce a game t’ill its almost done. if you want Nintendo to rush and make crappy games like all the other companies do to meet dedlines then fine. I can’t wait to see everyone having fun with the worst metriod game ever that happened to come out in 2013.

halo4 wasn’t that great, many halo fans aren’t fans of it, killzone hasn’t been great since two, shadow fall, felt like a tech demo for a lot of people.He is refering games like madden, COD, and assassin creed. Those games have no time grow or better them selves.

It’s about the games. Nintendo could have a great year and sell 5 games, but I wouldn’t call that “Nintendo’s Year.” Nintendo’s Year would DOMINATE the market, which is what 2014 might have in store for Nintendo. They are releasing the greatest bunch of killer apps in YEARS!
While at the same time leaning on a library of good games including Super Mario 3D World and Pikmin 3, and games that comes in 2015 (X and Bayonetta 2?), Nintendo will do well next year, either they dominate or not.
They need to get all the games that were on the wii virtual console on the wii u one plus more like all their 1st party games from previous gens, hint nintendo: just because you aren’t offering the games, doesn’t mean people won’t play them another way and whether that’s piracy or old cartridges on ebay, you won’t be getting the money. You can’t stagger releases of games that are already released

Not sure if some of these people in the comments are just trolling or just ignorant towards Nintendo and have nothing better to do with their time except claim how Wii U is doomed and that other consoles will dominate because Wii U is underpowered. Since when was it decided that Mario was a kids game? I enjoy them, mainly the 3D ones in the after game because thats where the challenge of it lies, complaining how Mario is milked is dumb aswell, there is always only one NSMB Game per console, only one Mario Kart per console, one Smash Bros. per console. I for one like a game for how it is played rather than the Graphics, Graphics don’t make a game, the Gameplay does. I understand that Graphics are important, but should they really be top priority? If you can’t do platformers, don’t bash Mario cause you can’t. Zelda is on it’s way so I wouldn’t worry.
Atleast it’s not like FIFA, COD, Assasins Creed and the like which have been released every single year, nowadays, you could easily just do a cheap DLC with all the additions for that year in FIFA, like players, but no, they re-release the game under a different name, give COD and AC a break every few years and come up with something new every once in a while, people only play COD for Multiplayer anyway, lol. Speaking of COD, thats probably the new kids game, along with GTA V and others with Kids buying and playing it.
Nintendo make sure their games are polished unlike companies such as EA who just rush their games out, look at what happened to Battlefield 4. Even delaying them if nessesary, like Zelda: SS and Pikmin 3, delayed so they can be better.
As for the competition, considering a PS4 if there are any games I like, as for the Xbone, it can just burn in lava, Microsoft only took the DRM out just so you can buy it without worry, if they were doing what was best for the consumer, they wouldn’t have considered DRM in the first place, heck, I don’t even know why you have to pay for online. Micro-transactions can burn aswell. I really don’t get why people support companies like this, I fear for Gaming as a whole.
Yes Nintendo have made mistakes with their Marketing and yes they have given their console a name that doesn’t help it either, but atleast the Wii U is a great piece of hardware with great games now and more to come, we even get Bayonetta 2 and X on a “Kiddy” system. Do I need to say more.
Even Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze looks great. Even Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros. (Both versions) all purchased along with Bayonetta 2 and X (didn’t even know about Bayonetta series before the 2nd one was announced, so I missed the first, not sure what I’m missing there, aswell as Xenoblade Chronicals. lol
i won’t buy a PS4 or an XboxOne unless there’s something compelling. I was going to buy a PS4 as a Bluray player, but heard it’s not that great at the moment … so, again i’ll wait.
Having said that, let me also say that i have a WiiU and all 3 members of my family have a 3DS. I must say, Nintendo is crap … we all want unified accounts (like sony offers) … and who moreso than us? … the 3 member family who don’t want to purchase an eShop game 4 frickn times.
Now, this unified accounts thing i speak of? … it’s a form of digital service … a form of server-customer-service … a level of network service … something Nintendo isn’t just 1 generation behind (like with hardware) … Nintendo is 2 generations behind with it’s services and network support. When the Wii came out, i found it acceptable … but not after a few short years. I’m afraid the WiiU might fall into the same category where that gamepad is looking very outdated and dull.
Speaking of network features and polished games … let me continue. Nintendoland doesn’t have internet support? … wow. I was planning on purchasing 3 WiiUs … i wanted to network them and each member of my family would be in the world. Yes, i have more money than sense … but, i’m certain people would also wish to do that with their friends. How sad, we can’t do that! … wow.
Now take Mario Kart 7 … i purchased 2 copied … Yes, $80 … and still they expect me to purchase a 3rd copy to truly experience the best 3-player mode. Why do i have to spend $120 on Mario Kart 7? … this is not family friendly!!
Now take Club Nintendo … you can get a Luigi Statue for 1500 points … wow … that’s only hundreds of games having never redeemed any Points. Who falls into that category? … store owners who swipe them from used games. Can you buy the Luigi figurine? … no … so, nintendo is again offering something to thieves instead of fans.
This company is terrible … daily, they make mistakes. Go to Club Nintendo right now and look at their offerings. They list “Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels” with a “WiiU” banner. Ummmm … click into it and you’ll see it has a “Wii” banner. Even Nintendo’s own staff are confused still!!!!
Oh, and i purchased day-1 … same with the 3DS. there have been bundles and price drops … where’s my Ambassador Program for WiiU? … wow, i guess i shouldn’t be a day-1 purchaser any longer with Nintendo.
Oh, and here’s the kicker … the real kicker!! … they advertised WiiU as having Virtual Console support before the system was even released. What they forgot to mention was that they were going to have the same slow roll-out with the same library of games they brought to the Wii. Again, i have more money than sense … i can’t wait to purchase games for my WiiU … but instead, PC Emulation is the best options. You know iTunes made music higher quality and easier than stealing it (at a premium of purchase). Why can’t nintendo do the same with games??? … they make it difficult, expensive and impossible and confusing all at the same time.
I agree with the eShop issue, not sure how they could work around it, Wii U can share all downloaded games across all 12 users on the console, doesn’t matter who bought it. 3DS doesn’t seem to have a way to work around it ATM, both consoles can’t even have the same account on multiple of the same system. Apart from having the same account on all your 3DS’s (which isn’t currently possible), I’m not sure how to get around it, maybe Cloud? You prove a point there though. Nintendo just needs a better online system, atleast they have currently made 3DS and Wii U unified NNID’s now so it is a step in the right direction. You definatly have the money if you plan on getting 3 Wii U’s. XD
I don’t get why it wasn’t called Wii 2 though, calling it a Wii U makes the Gamepad seem like just an accessory, it’s a nice controller, especially when the TV is often being used. XD
I’d just get the Wii out of all the Retail Shops ASAP, your not going to be able to stop sites like eBay from selling them.
As for Club Nintendo offerings (I’m in UK btw), still just seems to be the same prizes for stars, still looking at getting the Luigi Statue, I’d also have the current DSI/WiiWare points replaced with a 3DS/Wii U one, keep it up to date so people can get virtual console games on the up to date system. Not sure what America has on their catalogue though.
As for ambassador program for Wii U, unless they do another price cut, I doubt they would do one, besides, the Wii U price cut wasn’t as big as the 3DS’s, I think 3DS was cut from $50 to $170 in 2011 while the Wii U was cut from $350 to $300. I think that $200 – $250 would be a reasonable price point, even if it is already cheaper than it’s competitors. There would most likely be a Ambassador Program then.
If Xbox One wins Gen 8, gaming is definatly doomed.
If FNC are saying it should we be worried? lol. Nintendo still have a considerable advantage despite poor sales so far, and whoever or looses wins this round of the console wars it won’t be decided next year. PS4 and XB1 are pretty certain to suffer slow first years in terms of games releases, but 2014 is already certain to be a vast improvement for Wii U over 2013 or 2012. If the 3DS is anything to go by, Wii U needs Animal Crossing.

It could be, if Nintendo makes more and better games. Also Nintendo needs to hire more programmers to increase output development on games. I am disappointed Nintendo did not buy Atlus. Nintendo needs to buy Sega, Tecmo, Namco, Konami, Capcom and Square, then 2014, 2015, 2016, etc will all be the year of Nintendo.
