Monster Hunter Producer Speaks Of Franchise Success And MH4 For 3DS

Capcom’s Monster Hunter series turns 10 today and has outshined many of its other franchises in terms of behemoth sales, particularly in Japan. So in celebration of the series’ anniversary, Eurogamer has interviewed the creator and producer, Ryozo Tsujimoto. He speaks of the franchise’s success with its core emphasis on local multiplayer and on producing Monster Hunter 4 for the 3DS, scheduled for 2015 in the west, which features online multiplayer mode.

“[Monster Hunter is a game] where, even if you’re a newbie, you can play along with expert players and they can support you in playing along with them, and you don’t feel like you’re just useless or left behind. They can help you get involved in the game and then help you brush up your skills. It’s that kind of communal play aspect that I think has been key to its popularity in Japan.

“Monster Hunter 4 has got online play for the first time in a portable entry in the series. That’s going to mean we’ve got a whole new stage we can bring the community to. We have our community members now who love to meet up and play the game on local wireless. We hope they can be ambassadors for the title, so when we get more people into the next one and they want to play online, they’ve got a whole gang of people waiting there who know the game inside out.  So, the online functionality will be a big step in the west in growing our community size even larger than it is today.”

Tsujimoto also touched upon why Monster Hunter has continued on Nintendo platforms, saying that resources are a big part of that and, with a small team, would not want to spread themselves too thinly, in order to “do the best” they can on the specified platform. But regards to a Wii U version for Monster Hunter 4, the producer was rather coy, saying the following:

“At the moment we’re focused on 3DS, purely because with the previous title, the 3DS version couldn’t go online on their own. There was a system to bring them online in conjunction with the Wii U console, but they were only local wireless play by themselves.”

        1. Fanboy, what’s wrong with the game staying on a Nintendo platform? If you weren’t a fanboy, you would buy whatever platform the game is on. But no. You’re just a fanboy.

          1. What’s wrong with it going on platforms not owned by Nintendo? If the original commenter wasn’t a fanboy/fangirl, they wouldn’t mind the game going on other platforms.

            1. What’s wrong with it is that these Sony fanboys refuse to buy any non-Sony platform because it’s not made by Sony. And yet they are here port-begging for games that they want to play but cannot play because they refuse to buy a non-Sony platform. Do you understand?

              1. too bad i aint one nor a fanboy since i own a ps3/ps4, xbox/xbox360, wii/wiiu, ds/3ds, psp/vita, im here solely speaking on behalf of those who owns one platform..

              2. Not everyone has the luxury to buy multiple platforms. Besides, you can’t assume someone only owns Sony platforms based on a comment not a single thing about which consoles that person owns was mentioned. Do you understand?

                1. These drones are asking for the game to be on Vita which means that they either own that platform or are planning to own it. Do you understand?

                    1. U Understand Now? Lol.

You still don’t get it. The point is that they’re too much of a fanboy to even touch a platform that’s not made by their favourite company. If they don’t own a 3DS or a Vita, but want to play this game, then they should just buy whatever platform it is on. Do you finally understand?

                    2. No, YOU obviously don’t understand. What if their financial situation doesn’t allow them to own more than one gaming system? What if that one gaming system they own is a Vita? How are they supposed to play the game? Right, they can’t. That’s why it would be nice for them, and for many many others, to have the game on the Vita. None of them have indicated in any way that they refuse to touch anything related to Nintendo, so you should try to get real and stop using that “lol they too much of a fanboy, they should buy 3ds and stop being fanboy” stuff as an excuse for your lack of quality arguments. It is not convincing.
So I’m going to ask you (hopefully for the last time): Do you understand?

                    3. It’s not about their financial situation. They are being fanboys. They clearly have the money to buy a 3DS if they can afford a Vita plus a memory card. Do you even know how much it costs? Clearly not. They can afford a 3DS XL or even save and go for the 2DS. If you are arguing that they already bought the Vita, which you should not be since you said not to assume that they have one, then they can still trade it in and buy a regular 3DS or 2DS. Do you finally understand?

                    4. lol “What if they can’t afford multiple systems!?” Sounds like a personal problem to me. If this was the other way around & it was the 3DS owners upset over MH4 on Vita, the fanboys would instantly say “quit being a Nintenbaby & buy a vita!” It stings to be on the receiving end, don’t it, Sony fanboys?

          2. or instead of buying a whole new console/handheld i can buy it for a console/handheld i already own cus you know money dont grow on trees, but these fanboys wants it exclusive for some unknown reasons..

      1. Why? What’s so wrong about giving other people a chance to enjoy the franchise too? Besides, it would look better on Vita than on the 3DS, so they might as well go for it. Actually, it would maybe even make more sense to bring it to the Vita than to bring it to WiiU, considering the Vita has a larger userbase + is more likely to get larger because it’s cheaper than the WiiU, which means more people can afford it.

              1. Definition of Port-Begging

None taken. Just look up all of the Sony and Microsoft fanboys port-begging for Bayonetta 2 to the point of pissing off the developer. Or all of them drones wanting Nintendo to go third-party. Stop being a fanboy for two seconds and maybe you would see it.

                1. I am aware of the thing going on about Bayonetta 2, but that’s literally the only game I can think of people made a big deal of. I’ve seen much more (and much worse, for that matter) port-begging from Nintendo fans for 3rd party multiplats for the WiiU. It’s no secret that many developers are skipping the WiiU after all
I don’t know what Nintendo going 3rd party has to do with this though. They’re asking Nintendo to develop software only, so technically, they wouldn’t be begging for ports, but for games.
And I have no idea what makes you assume that I’m a fanboy, or a boy to begin with. I have in no way made any indications about which companies I do not support, so the fact that you choose that kind of thing to say to me tells me a lot about the amount and quality of the arguments you have to defend your “opinion”. But seeing how you’re frantically trying to talk down everyone for making reasonable comments concerning other companies besides Nintendo, I think have a slight idea of who might be the real fanboy around here. But maybe you could try playing games on other platforms other than the ones Nintendo owns too, if you haven’t done so yet. It’s really fun, promise.

                  1. Nintendo platforms have never had any strong third-party support so this isn’t anything new. We don’t expect to have any. My bad, I meant game-begging. Does that sound better to you? And I don’t know what made you assume that I don’t own other consoles. Maybe I just didn’t like them. However, I do not beg to have Sony or Microsoft franchises on the Wii U.

                    1. Exactly. So begging for 3rd-party on the WiiU is almost as pointless as begging Nintendo to go software-only and develop for Sony or Microsoft.
And I never said anything about you not owning any other consoles. Besides, I merely made a suggestion and said “if you haven’t done so yet”, meaning I am aware of the possibility of you having played games on other consoles.
And yes, I understand. There’s no point in doing that anyway, so you made the right decision.

            1. It’s alright, no worries. And I’m actually almost sure the Vita’s sales numbers are higher than the WiiU’s. As far as I know, the Vita has sold more than 7 million units so far. I might be wrong though, so feel free to correct me if that’s really the case.

              1. Last time I checked its about 2.5 million, could be at 3,but hey I could be wrong too, but I checked the supposed numbers not long ago though, so maybe I could be right.

            2. Wii U total sales at the end of 2013 according to Nintendo were 5.86 million and Vita sales are a little over 7, I don’t know the exact number but I do know it is over 7 million.

You can say VGchartz is unreliable, it is, it isn’t 100% accurate but it is pretty close. You may dismiss it but they listed 5.81 million Wii U sales, so they can’t be that off on the Vita either which they list at 7.65 million.

It really shouldn’t be a surprise considering every media create the PS Vita is always outselling the Wii U almost by double the amount. If you look at every media create that is.

Here you can check last weeks media create, the Vita sold more than the Wii U again more than double its sales and it is very close to selling as much as the 3DS LL this week also just about 5k units shy. It is at the bottom of the page if for some reason you miss it.

              http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&u=http://www.m-create.com/ranking/&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dmediacreate%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26hs%3DWFo%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26channel%3Dsb

                1. To validate the information further… (Not like I really care. I just don’t like people spreading bad information. I own both systems so it really doesn’t matter to me which sells better.)

You can check the latest famitsu and media create sales, Vita did pretty good with Soul Sacrifice: Delta. It almost outsold the 3DS which I think it only outsold the 3DS once a long time ago.

Point being though once again the Vita sold more than the Wii U and this time over triple its sales.

                  http://www.dualshockers.com/2014/03/12/ps4-sales-face-steep-drop-while-3ds-and-ps-vita-are-stable-wii-u-still-low/

I would imagine Smash Bro’s or MK8 might change that for a while once they release. We will see in due time. I am more skeptical of Smash Bro’s simply because it has a 3DS version and we all know how that goes unfortunately. The Wii U’s biggest competitor is its own sibling system.

        1. well no. exlcuisve can sell better=more people get to enjoy the game.

the 3ds has a huge install base too…….and the wii u will by the end of this year at least surpass the vita. its true if you look at the games coming out for bothe the plats and usually the wii u outsells the vita anyway even with no(new) games for the week.

          1. Not really. The Vita has been outselling the WiiU almost every week. At least in Japan.
And when I said more people get the chance to enjoy it, I meant that if the game was to be released on the Vita, people who don’t have a 3DS or a WiiU would be able to play it too. I’m pretty sure most of the people who have a WiiU own a 3DS too, so either way, they can play it. And in my initial comment, I didn’t say anything about the 3DS. I was merely comparing the Vita getting a Monster Hunter game to the Vita getting a Monster Hunter game.
Besides, you can’t really know if the WiiU is going to surpass the Vita by the end of the year. There is a gap of nearly 2 million between the number of Vitas sold and WiiUs sold. Yes, I know the WiiU is going to get Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros, but it’s not like the Vita is going to stay at the same number of units sold for the rest of the year. It’s going to get games too, which are also going to push the sales.

            1. *I was merely comparing the Vita getting a Monster Hunter game to the *WiiU* getting a Monster Hunter game.

Had a silly mistake in there, my bad.

          2. ” exlcuisve can sell better=more people get to enjoy the game.”

Wait…. So…. restricting games to one platform allows more people to play the game? .-.

            1. Nope, all it does is make them buy the platform more. Sure if it was on all platforms, it most likely would sell more, yeah there will be platform that sells the most of that version, other than that, no.

          1. Yeah they did. In fact, Sony, last I heard about MH3 for PS3, charged too much for its development thus turning the series away to Nintendo.

            1. Capcom is putting (has put?) a MH game on Vita (albeit an older fairly crappy game).

              http://youtu.be/G1yBa9iBCqw

3DS has the larger install base and thus has a lot more chances of selling better (as was seen with the massive MH4 sales). It’s all about money.

If the Vita was selling 3DS numbers, please believe more games (including MH titles) would be on that platform too – after all it did start out on PlayStation. Right now, sales just suck for the Vita, so not too many third parties are interested in it.

      1. Useless product? Let’s see. The Vita is a portable video game console which allows you to play video games on the go or without a need of a TV. Characteristcs that also apply to the 3DS. Or any other video game console on this planet. So, you’re basically saying that the Vita, along with all the other handhelds ever created, are useless.
Thank you for your pointless input.

      2. Nintendo doesn’t have MH as an exclusive at all. There is currently a new MH game in development for PC. Plus MH was released on PS3 last year (although an enhanced port) and will be coming to Vita this year. MHFG.

        1. Sorry to burst your bubble, but that was made before the exclusive deal. Then again, there was one released in Japan for Ps3 and Wii U. So I could say its MOSTLY a Nintendo exclusive right now.

          1. There is no exclusive deal and although MH Frontier is an older game (as I already noted), the PS3 and Wii U versions (which are also updated versions) just came out near the end of last year and the Vita version will be coming out this year.

Then there’s the new PC game that is still currently in development coming in 2015-2016 sometime last I heard.

There’s no “mostly” when speaking of an exclusive. Either its an exclusive, or its not.

            1. You can say there is no “mostly” but your definition is varying from mine, so I say it is mostly.

        1. it’s still a success having it on 3ds with 4 million sales, so saying it’s selling worst is an understatement.

          1. Not really, it’s on a better selling platform, selling less. Monster Hunter sold al ot on PSP, which wasn’t a hit platform. So it’s pretty bad that 3DS can’t take it further

              1. Yeah, Monster Hunter was a big thing in Japan, but when Capcom moved from Sony platforms for Nintendo, their sales got smaller. They sold less on Wii than PS2, sold less on 3DS than PSP. Take a hint and put your game where your fans are, unless you don’t like money.

            1. Give me numbers against that 4 million of MH4 and I’ll believe you. Still, the DS and 3DS have stomped the PSP and Vita, so your argument isn’t valid.

              1. PSP sales were bad, yet Monster Hunter sold strongly on it. 3DS “sells strongly” and Monster Hunter sells less on it

                w ww.vgchartz.com/game/18542/monster-hunter-freedom-unite/Japan/

                1. Its successful on the 3DS, there is nothing to it, stop downplaying it, it makes you sound like a fanboy.

                  1. It’s not. It’s not successful on 3DS, it’s not successful on Wii, not on Wii U. Capcom should open their eyes and see that the Monster Hunter public is not on these platforms.

Wii had 100 million units and it sold badly, they just have to wake up

                    1. Well it’s obviously successful on Nintendo platforms. Otherwise, MH4 wouldn’t be getting an expansion for the 3DS.

        2. Really? I don’t recall 4+ million MH4 for 3DS (that sold 37 million more than PSVita in two short years) sold in less than 2 weeks in Japan alone is “selling like crap”

          Y U MAD BRO?

    1. You’re kidding? Look at the sales figures before and after Sony and FYI, you should thank Sony for charing too much for MH3 development for PS3 that made the team to move MH to Nintendo.

      So, douces you fanboy douches.

    1. This 3DS version IS online. I think you missed that.

I’d rather have on the wiiu though. More comfortable to use and off-tv is awesome.

      1. well its for 2015 sooooo hopefyully just like with MH3 they aadded a wii u version in the end so hiopefully they do it again :)

      1. I mean the 3ds is so much more amazing to have than a 360, but I’m so butthurt that Nintendo is sick of me that I shove too much shovelware up my ass that I get butthurt about everything.

              1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

Indeed, by my calculations, the subject sasori requires a minimum of 46% more lotion for satisfying conditions…

      2. Comparing a last gen console to the next gen portable console that, it this rate, outsold the fuck out of Xbox, double of that in its life time…how desparate and sad.

Keep hating asshat. It only makes the 3DS stronger.

  1. if mh goes to sony… vita.
nintendo will lose the handheld market throne and when this comes nintendo goes under.
the 3ds is nintendos only hope.
in 5 years… sonys vita is on top, ps4 second, 3ds third and ps3 number 4.
maybe one is on the 5th place

    1. You’re statement is….confusing….monster hunter is not the only game 3ds needs…if fact its the other way around according to the news of Capcom’s failure. Monster hunter is a salvation but not for Nintendo’s 3ds…its for Capcom…not Nintendo so I don’t know where you got that statement from but I think you’re dead wrong.

          1. nintendrones… lol i can careless for this shitty monster hunter on the ooverrated 3ds. the graphics are trash just like pokemon.

            1. So is your opinion, now stop talking or continue to have us milk you for the lulz you silly lolcow.

            2. Aahh. The beauty of fanboy denial. ^_^

Live a little and experience these games to know the appeal. If not, then its your loss but don’t talk shit over something you never bother to touch.

            3. ^ Problably loves and own both games, since he talks about them so well, and only says that to have a laugh.

          2. Why now every type of fan, no matter how much you love Nintendo or not, you’re always a drone? Seriously, this word drone is overused as shit! Only because I’m a Nintendo fan doesn’t make me a drone something!

      1. i know mh is from capcom, but the japanesse like this game.
thats (of course pokemon etc.) why
the 3ds sell well, but what happens when this games dosent come anymore on 3ds…?
yes they will buy the handheld with this game. mh is a hardware seller.

  2. Please stop with the “bring to Vita” comments. Sony had a lock on the series on the PSP and BLEW it! Blame Sony.

I would love for MH4 to be on the Wiiu when it comes to the west but it’s doing abysmal now so I’m not holding my breath. Hopefully Kart and Brawl will change that perspective.

    1. Last I heard that Sony charged too much on MH3’s development cost on PS3. It was probably the last red line for Sony and the team turned away to Nintendo.

Now fans wanna go butthurt tight towards Nintendo because Sony lost their golden egg for being too expensive but still blame Nintendo for providing MH a new home to thrive its business instead of existing with PS.

Its just ridiculous how they turn sour at the wrong side for losing their own system exclusives. Hey, Nintendo lost all of Rare and its amazing games which was a terrible thing but have they COMPLETELY blamed on Microsoft fot that? Not entirely because they also understood that Rare also made that choice to sell themselves and they also lost everything they had when partnered with Nintendo for many years: fanbase, respect, sales, creativity freedom and devotion.

  3. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

    To the Commander Rioxus:

    I laughed when you wrote:

“Your intelligence must be reported to High Command” concerning the woman Kurisu…

  4. man these nintendrones are just stupid. monster hunter 4 looks like shit. 3ds is weak outdated device with barebone online and the games like there runing in 144p. titanfall is better than any 3ds game.

    1. titanfall is better than any 3ds game!?
      LMFAO!
Still lack evidence. Only evidence you have is your own stupidity!
      LOL

        1. Overlords..you mean that jackass Don Mattrick who dare to force DRM down on his own retarded Xbox fanboys and even said to buy 360 if they can’t afford Xbox One (dumbass choice of name BTW) and its wallet raping dictatorship services called Xbox Live 3.0.

I bet the retards still worship that asshole. I’m so glad he’s fired and gone from software giant to “WTF cares about a nobody company” called Zynga. XP

          1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

Indeed,I had to call the Xbot leaders something too…

Anyway, I hope thir new Overlord brings their true downfall by selling the Xbox Division…

      1. Who cared? I want Titanfall and it’s funny ’cause I will never have to buy an Xbox One or 360 to play it, I’ll just but it for my PC and I’ll laugh my ass off to idiots with a PC that go buy an Xbox One just to play Titanfall! HAHAHA! XD

        1. Sorry, Sasori, but the only SOCIAL reject here it’s you, who else doesn’t have friends to go out and have fun with so he has to troll a Nintendo website to have his fun and get the attention to people online since he can’t do it in the real world?

If you said any stupid shit you say here in the real world, you would have your ass beaten every fucking day!

    2. You mean that $60 single player-less COD copycat with mechs from the exiled Infinity Ward served by the cock$ucker$ of EA as Xbox One’s clutch title?

Sorry but Black Ops 2 already filled the futuristic COD idea last year and Battlefield 2142 did a better job being more future realistic that Titanfall. Oh and BTW, I bet its gonna be stuck at 720p just like the other so called “launch ready” Xbox One games like buggy BF4 at 720p or COD Ghosts at 900p while Wii U, a so called “last gen” next gen console, achieved higher output.

You, like XBetamax DOne, are fucking pathetic. So pathetic that when it does try 1080p, it literally blows up in your living room. Hope you still have fun with that Kinect forced, betamax tryhard when that happens. ;3

  5. Oh god, I beg of you to bless these people with mind and wisdom. Guys you really are doing a useless argument about Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. You lack knowing the meaning of OPINION, you need to respect each others opinion without that stupidity of yours.

    1. I’d respect some of these fanboys’ opinions… if they weren’t trying to push their opinions off as fact. So screw their opinion.

  6. i think the reason why MH is only a nintendo exclusive for the time being is that its cheaper (well when they were going to make a ps3 ver. of MH3 but was expensive to make so they shifted to wii and that may apply to wii and 3ds, not sure about wii u though) and has a larger fanbase on nintendo consoles, just like how sonic has a bigger fanbase on nintendo consoles than the others. it is a time exclusive and i do agree that MH4 would look better on vita than 3ds (yes i own a 3ds and no i do not own a vita but want one) but its all about the fanbase or how popular a franchise is on a certain console/handheld and maybe crapcom may port MH4 to vita IF people dont port-beg and let them to their job and if the sales of MH4 does well or exceed their sales expectation. btw port-begging bayo2 will never happen because the sales of the first one was poor and is why sony and microcunts did not want to support the development of the sequel (i heard the bayo1 is a great game, never played it but if nintendo lets platinum games port the first one to wii u then i will buy, if not then im buying a ps3 and the game) and i do understand them and is why nintendo came to the rescue. btw stop with the port-begging of nintendo going 3rd party and making full games to smartphones for $0.99 that will never happen and if you wanna play mario, get a nintendo console, end of story.

  7. I want Gran Turismo 6, Halo, GTA & Tearaway on the WiiU/3DS.
I want Bayoneta 2 in the PS4 and Smash Bros on XOne. Joke aside exclusives should stay exclusives, else this would be the 80’s again.

    1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

      Agreed…

We don’t need another universal catastrophy occuring again just like the one the Atarians caused back then…

  8. I’m kinda bummed it is taking so long to bring this over here. It’s like getting ready for Junior prom, just for your date to slap you and tell you to piss off till the senior prom.

I mean, I get it, better late than never, but Ultimate 3 did pretty well here to my knowledge, so it’s not like there isn’t a growing market here, and there’s not TOO much text to translate.
