GameStop Set To Increase Focus On Phones And Tablets Instead Of Video Games

Popular US video game retailer GameStop has announced that it plans to increase its focus on both smartphones and tablets, rather than video games. GameStop CEO Paul Raines calls the bold new move “GameStop 3.0.” Raines says the company will close around 2% of its current retail stores. GameStop will be opening Spring Mobile and Simply Mac stores instead. Spring Mobile will cover AT&T-branded phones and Simply Mac covers Apple products. They will open over 200 Spring Mobile stores and 20 Simply Mac stores.

      1. Do you know who else believed that theory? Capcom. Look where that got them? Instead of making more money they ended up having to cut more of their profits down. That’s not a strategy, that’s called being stupid.

  1. Well, that’s sad. I remeber when GameStop used to be a place I used to enjoy going to instead of having pushover employees trying to make me get a Power RewardsUp Pro card. If GameStop wants to make the big bucks, having a retail chain that sells retro games from previous generations (Gamecube and N64 included, and older).

    1. Too bad there aren’t alot of places like Gameworld. Atleast that place sells old and new consoles and retro gaming merchandise.Sadly the only locations are Spokane, WA and San Fransisco, CA. They should come out with more locations.

      1. Well many stores, and fast food restaurants, started out in a very small select location, so it might one day grow to other cities. Til that day, Spokane, WA & San Fransisco, CA are lucky places.

        1. Oh and the surrounding towns with people that don’t mind traveling to the next town for a good store to shop at.

  2. F@$@¿! Gamestop… I wish I lived near a Toys R Us. They DESTROY places in terms of how they many the games. Lmao I went there once and saw a GIGANTIC FREAKING DISPLAY of Wii U. All the games were placed perfectly in their spots. Eshop cards were all stocked and placed correctly. And oh man.. don’t even get me started on the accessories… Lmao. F*** you Gamestop! :)

So your now spreading rumors about me being a dyke? Well at least we know your spreading something other than your legs.

      1. You’re = You Are

So you’re (you are) now spreading rumors. (Correct)

So your now spreading rumors. (Incorrect)

Do you like to correct my purposefully terrible misuse of the word “your”? Did I light the fuse on your tampon again? :D

          1. You keep making the same grammatical mistakes constantly. i will continue correcting you until you get it right.

What amazes me is that you told me to care about myself and now you are here, looking out for me, the one who you believe is a lost cause. So hypocritical, yet so sweet, so sweet I just want to slap you, but shit stains, nor do I want slut on my hands.

              1. Lol glados she just trolls alot on here. She’s probably not really a bad person irl. It just seems like it here. XDD XD

                  1. Girls, girls, please. There’s no need to fight. All you need is an understanding, and, if that doesn’t work, a fight to the death should settle this, quite frankly, my money’s on the psychotic robot.

                    1. Are you sure you’re not The War Doctor? You don’t really act like The Doctor. The Doctor wouldn’t suggest two people fight to the death.

  3. WTF! whateva their employees suck and rarely ever have good advice.

Its like shopping at HHGregg annoying and stupid salesmen!

People will buy what they want so stop forcing the pre-orders cuz you lose more customers that way! Trust me it doesnt improve sales

    1. They do it cause the employees get commission on it. Every pre-order they get is like $50 in their pocket. Although here in Canada I never get pestered with WOULD YOU LIKE TO PRE-ORDER THIS. I always get asked if I want the warranty lol. But I come in say I want to pre-order so and so and do it and leave.

  4. This is just their way to get ready for a future where games will be purchased directly from our respective console/pc. The sooner this businesses find a way to create other sources of income the better for them. Looking the way things are now I believe there is not that much time to make a viable transition.

  5. Well this is depressing news…I agree with most people here, they should be focused on what made them “GAME” Stop. Start selling more retro games again, take trade-ins for old consoles for a start! It’s not gonna happen but it would be really freakin’ nice if I could walk in and browse WiiU games, PS1 games and even N64 games!

  6. I preferred Electronics Boutique (before its merger w/ GameStop & demotion to online-only store). Yes, there was a difference. I did get an import GBA SP since they were sold out of US stock, plus they waved the import fee if I purchased a GBA game w/ it. Funny, the 1st game I got w/ my SP was Golden Sun: The Lost Age, & my 1st GBA game was…Golden Sun).

But, over all, I preferred Gamefellas (which discounted display copies, though being reduced to buying them was rare; GameStop, on the other hand, practically had nothing but display copies left & didn’t discount them). Alas, when the malls started changing, Gamefellas seemed to vanish & GameStop became the only video game specialty store conveniently located.

Oh well, I mostly went to those stores for niche, harder-to-find games. Now, Amazon.com delivers, in more ways than one. Still visit department stores for more mainstream titles.

Anyway, RadioShack largely abandoned what originally defined them to focus on mobile devices, too. That was more fitting, but mobile gaming, imo, is a joke, so GameStop going that route seems horribly cheap & incongruent.

  7. Well this sucks. The Walmarts that aren’t 30 minutes to an hour away have horrible stock of Wii U games & now the Gamestop that’s closest is probably going to be getting closed down in the near future. I guess I’ll be doing even more of my video game shopping on the internet now. No matter. Gamestop’s quality is going to shit anyway.

  8. now i have $88 towards my xbox 360 with 16 great super cheap games. this are the games an getting in the summer: la noire,re dead redemption, gears of war 1 and 2, naruto ultimate ninja storm generation, cod black ops 1, dead or alive 5, fallout 3, dragon age origins, hitman abosultion, batman arkham city, battlefield 3, assassin creed 2, ensalved odessey and witcher 2 or mass effect 2. all those games cost like $140-169. very great deal. the xbox 360 is just $130, which i’ll depend on my parents to get it hopefully.
gamestop has alot of good deal on used products.

  9. Nintendo Or Nothing!

They might as well. Gamestop SUCKS for buying games anyways. Especially for us Nintendo gamers. You walk in, and every freakin’ wall is filled with nothing but Xcrap and Gaystation games. With only a few little racks of Wii, Wii U, DS and 3DS games. And many times, at higher prices than what they sell for on eBay.

The only time I EVER buy brand new games at Gamestop is when they offer a free gift for pre-ordering. Which they never seem to do anymore.

  10. Yeah, Great Idea, cell phones…. Like tons of other stores don’t do that already. Why would I go to gamestop when I can go to my carrier store, or Walmart for a fucking tracphone?

You’re better off using ebay than to get buttfucked by their insane prices and return policies and trade ins. What’s next, automatic sign ups to SMS Newsletters for crappy “promotions?” because 5% off a $60 game (Plus tax) is definitely a bargain….

  11. ……………………………………………………………………….. idk wat 2 say… im just bored…………………………………. :)
