Mario Kart 8 Scores 9 Out Of 10 In EDGE Magazine

UK publication EDGE has reviewed the eagerly anticipated Mario Kart 8 and has awarded the gorgeous game an impressive 9 out of 10. The publication says that the game is as essential to Wii U owners as Super Mario 3D World is. You can read some extracts, below.

“Even 2011’s effervescent 3DS outing, Mario Kart 7, feels somewhat lifeless by comparison, the new HD visuals are gorgeous, but Nintendo has also built on 7’s neatly interlaced mechanics and introduced a nuanced handling model to create the greatest Mario Kart yet.”

“The Mario Kart series’ battle arenas were designed to funnel players into each other, but now you’ll spend long stretches of time without even catching sight of a potential target as you trek round the circuit.”

“But even this isn’t enough to detract from an otherwise-joyous follow-up to the series’ excellent 3DS outing. That it offers as much of its own innovation again speaks volumes; Mario Kart 8 is as essential a purchase as Super Mario 3D World.”

    1. Can we just for once refrain from talking about other gaming audiences on a Nintendo article? The focus here should be Nintendo and its gamers, not Microsoft and its console gamers.

      1. This I can actually agree with. I wish this could just be a place for Nintendo fans to hang out and talk, which I’m sure was the initial intention of this site, but instead there’s just a bunch of fanboys arguing. Let’s talk about Nintendo here, and the other consoles at some place that’s appropriate for them.

  1. That’s a great score. Probably lost the 1 point for not implementing voice chat fully ala during gameplay.

    1. Battle courses should’ve kept the original designs but also include the race track as battle courses as well. No voice chat, lack of interesting characters. Koopalings receive special exception for their first time being playable as well being apart of Nintendo’s early history. Some vehicles were not creative enough or very appealing, leaving less than a handful of go to choices for vehicle types. New Rainbow Road was a disappointment compared to updated Nintendo 64’s Rainbow Road.

        1. /\ Right, most people only play with ONE character isn’t on the roster they go to their second choice. Easy as that.

          1. Most people play Mii’s these days, some people missed out on their favorite character for this game. There’s also a few people out there who actually go through and play each character in Mario Kart or even Smash Bros. Just cause they mostly only play one, doesn’t mean they don’t branch off from time to time.

          2. All I see is Funky Kong’s and Metal Mario’s, I rather not see people play just for crazy speed with the same annoying character over and over again.

    2. No its the vs mode which is dissapointing …just karting around a track……..thats ans awful way to battle others…..but other than that this game is near perfection.

    3. I know at least they did it with matchmaking with friends, as seen in one of GameXplain’s latest vids, but I’m not sure about in-game races.

    4. Not at all, I feel its more to do with the terrible and sloppy battle mode courses paired with the character roster… I hope pink gold peach gets melted down and turned into bowsers ass rest.

  2. Can’t wait for this! How does everyone feel about future DLC for this game? I’m hoping for some track packs and new characters later on, since there are a lot of characters they could have used, but decided to leave out. Maybe once per year they could add another 4 pack of tracks to keep things fresh?

    1. that would be awesome. But be aware that there are A LOT of unlockable characters besides the initial 32

          1. Actually 29 characters, Mii is just an abomination, troll, and a waste of space for potential characters. Kinda like the babies and metal heads. So we really only have 22, just 30 different options.

              1. Yeah you love your Mii’s, narcissistic brat. Not everyone does, we want MARIO characters. Not annoying pests, babies, and tin heads. Deal with it.

          1. Just go to the website, count the characters, go to Nintendo’s website and complain about the terrible choices we got! :)

    2. Could be Nintendo’s way of making more money, you never know… Rosalina is like the go to character to add to Mario games and they threw her in as DLC for Mario Golf. Yet I don’t know how positive the baby version is. I rather see Birdo in there, maybe some Kongs and K.Rool instead of so many babies.

  3. the game is such a shit game lol #BetterMakeWiiu2#WiiuDeadConfirmed#CheapTendo#Segtendo#RubbishU#NintendoIsNotE3BecauseNoGamesForU#Exposed

    1. Seriously, stop it. What you’re doing is not funny or clever, it’s just annoying. You’re that person at a party that tells a bad joke, and then laugh hard at it while everyone else just stares at you awkwardly.

  4. Considering that it came from EDGE – who is openly biased towards other brands and cinically ignores Nintendo – we can consider this as a 10/10

    1. Utter rubbish. They’re not biased to anyone. People like you are why other gamers think us Nintendo fans are moaning delusional idiots.

  5. So only big downside is lack of real battle mode tracks? Okay, I’m starting to get reslly hyped now!

  6. sounds good 9/10 :-)
but good is not enough to catch some hc gamers from sony or ms to buy a Wii U.
is there a game that have a score maximum 10/10?
what was the score of mario kart wii?

uhhh still 3 weeks to wait…

    1. Zelda a link between worlds got 10/10 every where and xbots and sony drones still didn’t buy it.

      1. okay thx for the answer.
zelda bw is a handheld game.
i hope that the multiplayer i so awesome & funy, that some of the sony and ms fan must buy one if they like great multiplayer games.

  7. Hmmm. Edge giving MK8 a very high rating. That’s the first. ^^;

This goes to show that MK8 is set to rock this world and haters alike by the end of this month. Start counting down haters cuase Mario Kart 8’s glorious 1080p debut is gonna kick your asses. :3

  8. pink0crystal0midbus

Seriously… a whole point off. EDGE sucks…. the game is perfect. More than perfect. It deserves an 11/10.

    1. Your opinion is noted, you oh so familar person with Mario Kart 8. You know everything about this game, and that everything is perfect.

    2. Perfect minus the lack of good choice characters. I’d drop the Mii, babies and metal blocks for Midbus.
