On 30th May, Mario Kart 8 for Wii U launched simultaneously around the world to global acclaim, garnering some of the strongest review scores in the history of the series. Following this, Nintendo has today reported that the game sold more than 1.2 million total units across Japan, Europe and The Americas from Thursday, 29th May to Sunday, 1st June.
“Such positive early feedback for Mario Kart 8 reinforces the great gameplay experiences that Wii U currently offers,” said Nintendo of Europe president Satoru Shibata. “With Nintendo set to showcase its future releases at E3 next week, this is a great milestone going into the summer season.”
Prior to Mario Kart 8, the seven titles that have launched previously in the series have combined to sell more than 100 million total units, an average of more than 14 million units per title. This includes two of the best-selling video games of all time: Mario Kart Wii for Wii and Mario Kart DS for the Nintendo DS family of systems.

I don’t see this game as a “life saver” for the Wii u, I see it more as a “flavour of the month” don’t get me wrong, it a great game, but one game can’t revive the Wii u. Nintendo need a break, and they now have it, but I’m saying: dint stay in paradise too long.
There is more than one game in the pipeline, this will serve as a catalyst though. The numbers for ONE WEEKEND, not a full week, are too impressive to ignore. I suspect multi-plat watch dogs would have a run for their money had MK8 had the entire week.
Online matches were done BEAUTIFULLY on this game, which shows Nintendo is starting to “get it” Haven’t tried chat on it, but have heard mixed reaction and it can only be used with friends.

I just think that it’ll help get more Wii U’s into people’s homes, thus making a bigger costumer base. I don’t think that it’s a system selling either, but it may be enough to tip people over the edge. So many people “think about getting on, but just aren’t sure”

Overall, victory for Nintendo. Sure, MK8 wasn’t going to top Watch_Dogs in the all-formats charts, but Wii U hardware sales were at their highest since launch, and in some territories at least, it outsold the PS4 and the XO. Speaks volumes.

I’m not sure if this includes digital copies or bundles, but overall the number isn’t that high. Although it’s important to consider that most Nintendo games are slow burners. I was hoping for more sales+and more bundles so the Wii U could turn right around and seem more alluring to developers and publishers.

In comparison, it took InfamousSS over a week to sell +1million and PS4’s userbase was higher then compared to WiiU’s userbase now.

Wii U is solely a gaming machine, whereas PS4 has other multimedia features. And regardless of the quality, there have been a number of games released on the PS4 so far. If you even just look at the release schedule of games for both systems, for the Wii U it’s tiny in comparison and relies heavily on a select few games to garner support.

I got the WW HD remake when it came out and it’s honestly my least favorite Zelda game to date. It’s still a good game, but not as good as TP or SW or OoT.

I didn’t accept the free game. I HATE having digital games. Even for free, I have no use for them. I’m still waiting for Nintendo to reply to my e-mail. I asked them if I could have a physical copy of Wind Waker HD instead of a digital. If they say I can’t (and if I can’t sell the download code either), then I stand by what I originally stated. Mario Kart 8 was not worth 60 dollars!

I’ve been playing MK8 4 days in a row. No intention of stopping playing it. Way too much fun. The more I play, the more action I want. The best racer I’ve played. I love racing games, but this sets a new standard for racing.

I believe mario kart 8 will sell at least 10 million copies lifetime. It also depends on there e3, if they can get people excited at this year’s e3 and have a great software line up for the next few years than its possible they can sell 15 million copies lifetime on mario kart 8. It’s a long shot but possibly remember mario kart always sells hell mario kart wii is still selling as I speak. I think the wii u will have a great turn around like the playstation 3 had after its first year. Let’s don’t forget, nobody wanted the playstation 3 at first and boom they had a great lineup and dropped the price and now it sold 80 plus million consoles. I’m not saying the wii u gonna sell that much but is possible it will sell at least 50 million wii u lifetime. The reason why the wii u is struggling because of the software drought. No one wants to pay $300 for a console that get a new game every 2-3 months it gets frustrating. As for me I’m happy with mines because it is backwards compatible. Everybody keep forgetting about that which the ps4 and XBOX1 can not do. There’s a lot of wii games I never played until now and I’m happy. I’m now playing mario galaxy 1 and 2, xenoblade, smash bros brawl,resident evil 4 for the first time no lie I’m pretty busy with my games because there new to me. I have a 25 wii games and 10 wii u that’s 35 in all and as for my XBOX1 I have 1 game I thought about selling it until watchdogs came out. That’s my only game I have on a $500 machine. Do yall get my point?
