Capcom Community Specialist Yuri has confirmed that when Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate releases in the west, players will not be able to play against Japanese gamers. Yuri explains that the Japanese and western releases of the game will be hosted on different servers. The same thing happened with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is exclusive to 3DS and launches early next year.

It says that western players can’t play with Japanese and vice versa. It says nothing about America not being able to play with Europe. It’s going to be split up into two regions: Japan and everything else. Don’t fret, no sweat.

The reason they are doing this is because the DLC in Japan (such as Nami’s staff in One Piece) cannot be released in the West due to licensing issues.
Which is bullshit! But they better not restrict that Zelda and Mario bros armors. I will be madder then the most wanted mad man psychopath.
It’s shitty but it’s out of Capcom’s hands. FUNimation holds rights to all One Piece properties, for instance.

The best thing about Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate was that you could play it on the Wii U in co-op with the 3DS version. Too bad there’s no Wii U version of 4.

Well this isn’t the same as region locking but yes that dumbass concept needs to die. I’m sure there are several petitions out there that are trying to get Nintendo to change their ways on that.
This is probably done to avoid compatibility errors that can derive from different coding.

Geez. America and Europe will still be able to play together, this just sets the West and Japan apart. It’s probably because of the DLC, the huge difference in the release dates and probably some different coding between MH4 and MH4U.
