Kicking off our Nintendo #3DS developer event with the opening movie to a new game called Code Name: S.T.E.A.M! #CodeNameSTEAM

We heard earlier today that a big Nintendo 3DS title was going to be showcased today at 6pm. Well that game is Code Name S.T.E.A.M. The title is set in the steam age and everything within the city is steam-powered, from drawbridges to trains. The game is cell shaded and we should get an official look at it tomorrow. The game is developed by Histoshi Yamagami who has worked on the Fire Emblem, Xenoblade Chronicles and Pokemon series. Code Name S.T.E.A.M is a strategy title produced by Intelligent System.
- Mr. Yamagami wants to “find a way to introduce more people to strategy games & have them fall in love w/ them the way I have”
- CodeNameSTEAM uses action elements from shooters to enhance both movement and attacking.
- CodeNameSTEAM uses the unique touch screen features of the Nintendo 3DS to create an intuitive control system.
- Mr. Yamagami says that CodeNameSTEAM is a turn based strategy game with a variety of unique features
- The fighters in CodeNameSTEAM run on steam. Fighters have boilers and they have to pull from a limited amount of steam to perform attacks.
- The game is structured as a campaign and divided into missions. Each mission has several maps
- As you play through the game, the boilers, weapons and characters available to you will increase.
- Character design in CodeNameSTEAM is based on American comic books. The developers were inspired by artists like Jack Kirby and Bruce Timm.
- Main characters’ weapon design is based on the weapon’s abilities and an animal motif based on the character’s personality.
- The terrain has a lot of depth and reflects the variety of strategic choices in the game.
- The developers came up with some original aliens that riff on creatures from the Lovecraft mythos

Kirby looks great, the Captain Toad game looks surprisingly good, Xenoblade Chronicles X looks good, Bayonetta 2 looks great (and it’s being bundled with the first game), Yoshi’s Woolly World looks really good, Splatoon is new and interesting… what are you talking about? “Not a single good game.”

I trust Miyamoto implicitly; however, strategy is my LEAST favorite genre. I’m sure it will be well-executed and unique…but I would sooner buy a game that had me at hello…M.M. Both would be nice.

Well from what we seen so far there are a few, the bazooka, the bomb and the standard ink shooter, though the main mechanic is all in the characters :)
