Miyamoto Says Nintendo Is Hard At Work On The Next Wii U System Update

Legendary video game developer Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed that the company is hard at work developing the next system update for the Wii U. Miyamoto reiterated that these system updates need a lot of testing, but rest assured there’s certainly one in the pipeline.

You mentioned at the pre-brief that you yourself had been working on the Wii U system update that dropped recently and added a quick start menu. Can you tell us anything about other future updates you’re planning for the system?

“Yes, we’re definitely working on additional system updates. But the challenge is that any time you do an update that big, it requires quite a bit of testing. We can’t do those very frequently, but I can say that we’re already working on the next system update.”

Thanks, Aiden

  1. Needs folders, the ability to switch games without having to go to the main menu. Loading times between game launches and going to settings needs to be reduced. Think of making the OS operate faster.

      1. UPDATE NEEDS:
*A better friends list overall! (PMing, Invites, extend to 200 friends)
        *BETTER WIFI
*Folders (so simple yet has not been done!)
*Accomplishment system but in form of “Missions” and “Badges” (missions are the things u need to complete and badges are awarded) made that up myself
*Mii costumes/hats & unlockables (and actually viewable to others)
*Personal Messaging (possibly monitored by Nin Mods/bots)
        *Game Invites
        *On screen quick notifications
*Chat rooms with voice chat and normal text with registered friends. (possibly monitored by Nin Mods/bots)
*Media Player and viewer (Photos aswell)
*Personalization to the home menu (!!!its too damn boring!!!)
        * a cool start up intro (like gamecube)

        1. >private messaging monitored by people

Sorry but I enjoy knowing I have truly PRIVATE messages with friends and family. It’s people like you who are so willing to give up privacy and other rights that everyone else suffers.

          1. yah i know but knowing Nintendo they might put some sort of monitoring/bots even though it is called “private/personal messaging”. Maybe a reporting action would work better. :)

            1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

I’m against all forms of monitoring private matters…

If they do this, we must get so loud the whole system would crash…

                1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Actually, that’s exactly what Quadraxis means. I mean, what else would crash the system other than a mass Miiverse-wide riot? >.<

        2. im with you all all the way, except the personal message part being monitored, its called ”personal” for a reason

          1. Yah, i know but knowing Nintendo they might wanna baby-sit & put some sort of monitoring/bots even though it is called “private/personal messaging”. Maybe a reporting action would work better. :)

          1. Really? There was mass network error connections with Mk8! They even posted a help link on miiverse! And its not just mk8 either but the entire wifi/sever performance!

            1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

A report button should have been added to private messages a long time ago if it doesn’t already have one. I wouldn’t really know since I don’t use the private messages on Miiverse enough to even recall or forget such a button.

        3. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

*A better friends list overall! (PMing, Invites, extend to 200 friends): Agreed.

*Accomplishment system but in form of “Missions” and “Badges” (missions are the things u need to complete and badges are awarded) made that up myself: Unless it adds something to the games, I’m good. We’ll leave that dull achievement system to the other consoles & Steam.

*Mii costumes/hats & unlockables (and actually viewable to others): I love the hats/costumes for the 3DS. A shame it’s relegated to the Mii Plaza. So great idea. It would be perfect for Miiverse. More customization for our Miis is a big want.

*Personal Messaging (possibly monitored by Nin Mods/bots): We already have that & no to the monitoring crap. The admins are bad enough on the Miiverse communities.

*On screen quick notifications: I like the idea of the Gamepad’s screen flashing a few times more than the on screen notice.

*Media Player and viewer (Photos aswell): Like what the Wii had. This update would require that the SD card reader will work for Wii U as well as Wii.

*Personalization to the home menu (!!!its too damn boring!!!): I want more control over my Wii U Plaza, too. Instead of random community links, the community links are of games we actually have as Favorite Communities.

          * a cool start up intro (like gamecube): I miss the Gamecube’s main menu set up with the music. I remember the days of actually leaving the Gamecube on & listening to the music from the main menu as I tried to go to sleep.

          1. yah everyone is attacking the whole monitoring PMs thing but knowing Nin, i was just being rational, so i said possible monitoring by bots/mods… i think a report action would do better though. :p

    1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

I hate how I have to exit my game to change settings on both my Wii U and 3DS. I understand if certain settings like aspect ratio can’t change while playing a game, but touchscreen calibration? Microphone testing? Time and date? Wi-Fi? Seriously?

  2. The only update I want is to be able to extend the range of the gamepad. Wii u is crying out for it. I’d never get off it.

    1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

I do not know if a software update can fix that. But I too wish it was longer. I cannot take my GamePad out of the room. I cannot take it upstairs or to the bathroom :\

    2. That’s your houses fault. Some people can go downstairs, out the front door and onto their drive way with the Gamepad still working. If you have cement walls or just really thick walls that will block the signal.

    3. It doesn’t work that way. If they can make the gamepad work on 2.4Ghz frequency it would extend the range but it would also compete with other things in that range like other Wi-Fi signals and phones. The gamepad currently works on 5Ghz frequency which makes it less likely to get interference but the shorter waves are more easily blocked by walls and stuff.

    1. I had heard that Sony is the only one with the right to having a Blu-Ray player in their system. I had only heard this from a friend so I can’t be totally sure this is true, but it seems likely.

      1. The Xbox One is also a Blu-ray player so Sony’s not the only one allowed to have one. Nintendo’s games are physically blu-rays but they didn’t purchase the Blu-ray license thus they can’t add the ability to play Blu-ray movies. What they could do is either purchase a license or provid Blu-ray support via an eShop purchase that costs the amount of the license.

  3. Probably just another system stability update.
I wonder if Ninty will ever allow menu customization. Even just a color option would be nice. The risk of bricking a system seems too much for a hacked Zelda theme.

  4. -I love to be able to at least play DVD’s.
-Use Wii U Pro controller for eShop, Wii games.
-If Wii disc game is in Wii U System, selecting Wii app on Home Menu goes directly to Wii game without going through Wii Menu.

      1. fzerofalcondensetsu

Actually it probably could. At least I think it should, seeing as how there are “apps” you can download for the original Wii via homebrew channel that would allow for dvd playback. So a system update could install something to the OS that would have the same effect. *Purely speculation on my part though*

    1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

      1. Won’t that be a hardware issue, not software?
      2. So much yes. Although with the Wii games, that might not be necessary now that we’re getting an official GameCube adapter.
      3. I think if this was possible, it would have been done already. Apparently emulation is a lot harder than consumers make it out to be.

      1. 1. DVD playback is only a software issues. Wii games are on DVDs so the hardware definitely supports it. It’s just a matter of licensing.

        2. The eShop can definitely be made to be used with the Pro Controller. Whether or not it and the gamepad can be used for Wii games is a different story. The Wii barely has an operating system(but does) so some things that we perceive to a part of the OS are actually part of the game (the home menu). In that case of inputs, I believe that’s mostly handles by the OS that runs on the ARM chip but I’m not sure if the classic controller driver is completely contained within the OS. If it is, than it can be done, if not then it’s unlikely.

        3. Booting directly to a game in Wii mode should be possible with modifications to Wii mode. I personally wish they would get rid of the Wii System menu, the Wii Shop, and the Mii Channel and have those duties be taken up by their respective Wii U counterparts. That should make booting into your Wii software even quicker. That would also make it more likely that they would push your Wii games to the 8GB/32GB SSD and hard drive instead of the flash storage which would allow them to sell Wii games on the eShop and is the only way they could do Gamecube VC games.

And while they aren’t really doing any Wii emulation, emulation is indeed way hard then people make it out to be. If Nintendo did want to do a Wii/ GameCube emulator, the Wii U’s similarities to the other systems would make it a lot easier. Essentially, all they have to emulate is the GPU and I have a feeling that if they can do that, they can also get them to run in HD and having the gamepad and Pro controllers work for WIi games would completely be possible.

  5. Yep, I definitely want folders. (Prolly won’t have wi-fi anymore by then. Gotta cut back for a while.)

But why is the Settings icon mixed w/ the other moveable icons? Shouldn’t that be fixed to the bottom w/ the rest of the default apps? It’s like that on 3DS, too, but that screen’s kinda cramped, so it’s understandable.

    1. I just turn the screen off. But seriously, they should have a button combination to do so. It would be so much more efficient.

    2. A way around this is walking out of range with the gamepad so it says it can’t connect to the console or whatever, and then hold the power button while still out of range and the gamepad will turn off but not your system. It’s a way around it till they hopefully fix it.

  8. Make it, so it can bake cookies and make coffee! Also I want to change the icons and the background and install Windows or Android on it. Also let me watch movies and photos from my SD-card, because my TV can’t (whoops, looks like it can). And please, please I need more slots in my friend list, because I have hundreds of thousends of friends on the interweb (yes, I know them ALL personally and no, I don’t need dem just for statistics and bragging)!
But seriously: Bring folders, add a function, where I can see if a friend is online without going to the Home-menu, let me send messages from the friendlist and further improve the overall speed and loading times!

  10. PLEASE we need an improved friends system. Like notifications on screen when our friends log on, invites, and party chat. Those would make the Wii U so much better.

  11. Can’t they just trick the mode to make Wii mode think Pro-controller is the classic controller? That way I can play Brawl with the pro controller.

  12. Also I would like my yahoo, gmail and youtube accounts linked in to the Wii U like a smartphone.

  13. I know we can now view what is on the screen during Wii mode, but why not add some options to control some games with the Wii U gamepad as well? I want to play a lot of those games with the gamepad.. that’s got to be possible at some point.

    1. Making something display on the gamepad and making something play on the gamepad are two very different things.

  14. Oh GOD! I wish they’d add an option to allow actual snapshots of people’s faces to be put on the Mii’s. I mean their REAL FACES, not just silly caricactures that look nothing like the person. But I know I’ll never get my wish. The update will probably be something that makes no difference again.

The Mii’s also need many other options. Like different hats, custom clothing designs and funky hair and skin colors like bright red, green, yellow etc. Then I can finally create Simpsons characters etc.

      1. No. He’s talking about putting your face on your Mii characters. Literally. Your real face. (I think. Lol.) Me personally, I wouldn’t really care. I’d keep my cartoon look. It suits me. As for clothing and stuff, I’m shocked Nintendo hasn’t already done that.

        1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

If that’s what he means, I want to say no to that. They aren’t really our avatars if they have our exact face superglued onto the Mii.

  15. Nintendo need to add more payment options to the eshop. I’m not buying a 15 euro eshop card for a 8 euro game. I also dont own a creditcard. Paypal or the Dutch Ideal would be great. All the other companies (sony, microsoft, valve) let me use paypal.

  16. we need a data management update. to keep games on the usb hdd and keep save data on the wii u, the random failure of the hdd can be devastating losing all the games progress

    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Wait. The save data of downloaded games on an HDD get saved to the HDD!? Please let that be a no.

      1. Umm, well actually from what I’ve seen, when I play my downloaded games on my HDD, the save data for NSMBU works for all profiles unlike when I play my physical copy of MK8 where all that stuff is only on my profile. So that would be a yes. Sorry… :S

      2. Yeah, if your HDD is selected as the save device, EVERYTHING saves there. The Wii U is unfortunately not able to make use of the both its built in Storage AND plug in storage at the same time when it comes to saving any kind of data.

        1. Damn. I was hoping it’d be like the 3DS/SD card where the digital games will show up on the Wii U main menu. Well that makes the many pages for Wii U’s main menu worthless just like all those pages on the Wii’s menu were worthless.

  17. Well I hope they will be able to add more Mii customisation. Facial hair is something they should add more. I could not believe it when I first customise my Mii on Wii U. It’s like Nintendo did not learn from the Wii .

Outfit, I don’t understand how come they did not give us the option to wear outift. Like mario, luigi, link, peach, daisy, wario and waluigi, samus etc….

Saying that I perfectly understand why they make the Mii simple cause those can be incorporate easily in the game. But still simple outfit and more facial configuration won’t break the system.

Home menu configuration, Nintendo should look at USB loader GX GUI an get inspired about it then do something about their home menu. It all I have to say.

Achievement… nah leave it to PS4 and Xbox. It’ s those kind of shit which allow developer to put a trophy for a DLC you have to buy and therefore unable to achieve 100%. For me achievement is like opening the door for DLC abuse.

Mii plaza or communities thing. I don’t have the one I want, I though I would have the ones I put in my favourite or the game I played, never had or never played How to survive… so why I do have it in my mii plaza????

I don’t know for some but Nintendo Tvii needs to be up and running after 2 years the damn thing is still not available where I live. By the way does anybody have some news about it?????

  18. Five key points to consider:
    1. Achievements but with rewards for achieving all of them (like getting a free reward from Club Nintendo)
    2. Region free games
    3. Customizable home screen
    4. Cross-buy, cross-play, cross-save, cross-whatever
    5. Stability – the obvious ones

    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Best idea for the Achievements system. I’d prefer the Achievements be an app on the Wii U, though. I’ll be very mad if they show up in the games since I want to have a 100% complete file of some of their games, not a 99% file because I’m missing one pain in the ass, hard to get achievement.

  19. Lack of PSOne Classics – The original Playstation was Sony’s
first video game system and the platform for some of the greatest video games of all time.
However, it just straight game purchases without counting
digital upgrades are tallied, then Battlefield 4 earned the number one spot on the
Playstation 4. In some cases, they are not finished until long after anyone who knew the
    original creator had long passed.
