Were Next Level Games Working On Metroid Prototype Before Luigi’s Mansion 2?

metroid_next_level_1

An investigative sleuth from Kyoyo Report stumbled upon some prototype artwork from the acclaimed Next Level Games. The artwork from a former employee was posted online. What’s interesting is some of the designs are from the Metroid series. Whether or not the developer worked briefly on a Metroid prototype remains be seen, but it’s certainly interesting.

          1. … Your giving Sony, Playstation, and yourself a bad rep… :( If Nintendo is really all about babies, why do you even comment on or read the articles here?

          1. With Wii Remote only controls in a open 3D environment and awkward ass Prime FPS mode ripoff where you can’t even move or aim fast enough? lol Don’t make me laugh. Other M is a joke to the series.

                1. The only thing I hated in Other M when looking at the 3rd person and 1st person thingy is those sequences where the game would stop, and force you into 1st person to see or scan something.
At times it was ovbious but other moments were frustrating and I was unable to tell where or what I had to look at.
Aside from that the game was fine, the story more or less, I felt it was more of a filler to let the fans know who was Adam Malkovich and what role he played in Samus past.

                  1. The thing about Other M is that its not trying to be a Metroid game of its own. It pretty much rehashed Super and Fusion together, never had a single original enemy or boss design, no new power or suit upgrades and the story is so contradicting of Samus’s character and what’s with the permission unlock system? The entire idea behind the game is pretty fucking stupid.

                    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

The permission system was always about Samus showing respect to her former commander when she served the Galactic Federation as a soldier.

Instead of Metroid: Other M, though, we should have gotten a game that actually took place during Samus’ days as a Galactic Federation soldier to show us Adam Malkovich. Fusion always gave me the impression that Adam Malkovich died saving Samus’ life during a mission from Galactic Federation that led to her quitting & becoming a bounty hunter. The permission system might have been better received that way. Although, I will admit I’ve been getting tired of the tradition of her losing all of her abilities in the beginning of a Metroid game.

                      1. No. Its a forced mechanic that has nor serves no purpose in a Metroid gameplay in general. Other M failed in so many ways that nothing good came out of it and I mean NOTHING just like what the “game” is like. The point about Other M being able to work somewhere is no longer valid and never was so defending this POS in any aspect doesn’t help make it better again. It sucks and should be forgotten..permanently.

                      2. Yeah. Doesn’t fit in at all. Especially when put at high risk, like entering and fighting a boss without the Varia Suite. And how does Adam know what abilities Samus has anyways.

                              1. It doesn’t. It does not burn down your house. That’s stupid. You do not need to buy the Kinect. You don’t need to buy any DLC or any Gold Membership of you don’t want to. You don’t need to worry about resolution unless you have some huge 42 inch TV. I like the controller a lot. I think it’s pretty nice for gaming. And I like the design of the console and some of its exclusives. I’m just getting really tired of the Xbox hate.

                                1. Microsoft called for it with the DRM BS and deserve all the hate it gets. I don’t trust them bastards as far as I can shove a boot up their ass trying to con people and monopolize the gaming market so people and idiots bend over for their pathetic policies. Not to mention most of their hardware designs suck in innovation and stability and that’s a fact. After Xbox One, there’s no way I’m even considering that expensive 800p Cable box with an identity crisis.

                                  1. Also, you’re thinking about it too hard. If I had an Xbox One, I would just sit back, relax, grab some Doritos and Mountain Dew, and play some Halo. XD I feel sorry for anyone that doesn’t buy the console just because they think Microsoft is evil or something. LMAO I don’t let stuff like that get in the way of my video game enjoyment. If I cared about what the company did more than the games themselves, I’d have been sold my Wii U. I’ve been pissed at Nintendo ever since third parties started leaving the Wii U and I’ve really dislike most of the decisions they keep making. But nope. Still got a Wii U because of games. Games that I enjoy.Although the lack of third party made me seriously consider selling it but I suppose it doesn’t matter now since I can afford to get another platform to back it up.

                                  2. Tough. The Microsoft hate will continue because the video game industry has been going downhill ever since they got involved.

                                    Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not.

                                  3. Odd. I specifically remember Adam telling Samus to activate the Varia Suit when she got cornered by the lava boss, so I don’t recall fighting some boss without the Varia Suit.

                    1. exactly! this is just one guys art style and ideas on metroid. Doesn’t mean they decided to go with it. I doubt they’ll choose that design.

                2. I haven’t played a single Metroid game besides Super Metroid. And I didn’t even like that one. I want to try Metroid Prime though. And despite what a lot of people are saying, I will try Other M.

                  1. How did you not like Super? Is it because it is based mainly on exploring? Metroid Prime is essentially a 3d version of that game (still awesome). Try that one then Other M. That one is more action packed. Hugs btw!

                    1. I don’t like the 2D Metroid. I think the 3D one like Prime looks way better because it’s in first person awesomeness…

                      1. I have no idea why people hated other M so much. I mean sure it wasn’t ground breaking or anything but it also wasn’t bad

                              1. -Fixed octodirectional movement in enviroments clearly designed to move around analogically.
-The way they handled first-person mode. It was good on paper and awkward in reality.
-Some weird camera angles here and there detract from the experience (minor complain, though, but aggravated by choosing octodirectional movement)
                                -Pixel hunting
                                -Broken evade system.
-Lack of exploration, secrets and well-hidden expansions.

Those are the worst offenders. It can be summed up with “controls and level design”, mainly.

                                1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

I’ll agree with sections 2,4 and 6, the rest were done on purpose to resemble Super Metroid style and the evade system worked fine for me, and it’s obvious that you can’t evade 100% all the time if multiple enemies are attacking you simultanously…

                                  1. “it’s obvious that you can’t evade 100% all the time if multiple enemies are attacking you simultanously…”
That’s the thing. You totally can. I think the only moment when you HAVE to time it right is the part when you’re ambushed by space pirates right before you can activate the wave beam. Otherwise, you can just keep tapping a direction rapidly and you’ll change from one invincibility state to the next one with very few (if any) frames in between.

                          1. I would have been upset about that if not for the fact I was pissed that Ridley “killed” Anthony, just like Samus was, so like Samus, I was thinking “wasn’t I having a moment of weakness a second ago? Oh well. *chases after Ridley in anger*”

                      2. Ugh, that’s the same reason why I couldn’t finish Metroid Prime and didn’t even bother with the rest. The wacky control scheme.

                          1. I have enjoyed the game and have beaten it 3 times because I love the action and quick skills you need in this game just like Ninja Gaiden. I played metroid prime series and thought it was good but I just didn’t think first person was the best for samus since I played super metroid before. When I played other m, I just fell in love with it and enjoyed. Sure the story isn’t the best and can be pale at times but I still liked it and liked the atomosphere of the game. A lot of people complained about Samus, but instead I took what was there and really got to see the true side of samus and tried to understand her feelings. But regardless how she acted she is so bad a$$ and defeats all f the bosses with no problem, especially the finally boss. That as hard.

                            1. Exactly why I’m not like the others that are practically crying about Samus having a moment of weakness. It’s funny how a few minutes of weakness made everyone forget how much of a badass Samus was in the game before AND after the Ridley scene in the Pyrosphere.

                      3. If you don’t like 2D Metroid then you have problems every 2d game is better than that prime garbage you shit prime fans keep talking about. Also Nintendo needs to work on a Metroid game themselves and stop outsourcing the damn series, I swear Metroid one of my favorite franchise is slowly turning into the Sonic franchise.

                          1. The same thing your on, the problem isn’t Other M, the problem is idiot fanboys asking for Metroid to be turn other stupid ass genres instead of being itself. To paint mental picture for your dumbass like Open Side Scrolling Action Adventure and First Person Adventure; no Third Person Shooter, Multiplayer Shooter or some other crazy idea that comes into none Metroid fans minds just like Sonic fans.

                  2. for me, super metroid is a masterpiece :)
i have my doubts about the artwork, i mean “metriod”?
i hope it’s true and it is not cancelled!

                  3. Okay so you hate the best 2D Metroid game ever created, haven’t and never willing to try the Prime trilogy which is one of the best trilogies out there but still want to play that trash Other M…

That’s it. We can’t be friends anymore. lol XD

                    1. Yes, I don’t like Super Metroid. What are you going to do about it? XP Lol if it got remastered or something, perhaps I might like it. The controls don’t feel right to me. And I despise that wall jump. Spent 4 hours trying to jump up a wall. Then I gave up. Lol.

                      1. I actually completely suck at SNES games.

Who knows, if Super Metroid got remastered on 3DS, I think I’d be willing to give it another shot, just like I did with OoT 3D and SF643D.

                      2. “if it got remastered or something, perhaps I might like it. The controls don’t feel right to me. And I despise that wall jump”
Zero Mission is what you’re looking for. Seriously, give it a try. It controls like heaven.

                      3. Are you freaking serious? XD How hard is it to do a wall jump? I get Super Metroid control movement and feel isn’t as tight as Fusion but hey, it could be worse…*looks at Other M* very..much..worse. :/

                  4. Primes are really good and definitely play Other M. Only people that don’t like that game are absurd Metroid fans who hate the “Ridley scene.” If you can get passed that, like me, then you’ll love Other M.

                    1. I actually loved the Ridley scene. *activates flame shield* It showed that Samus isn’t as strong as people thought as she froze. It made her more human. I wouldn’t have used Samus changing into a child for a few seconds, though, as that seems to be what really pissed people off as they thought Samus, the adult, was crying. Besides, her moment of weakness made the scene even better once Anthony was “killed” as Samus practically went, what I like to call, Super Saiyan on his ass. The Ridley scene also seemed to get Samus out of her funk that she was obviously in for most of the game before that event. Besides, it is Ridley, after all. He has that effect on Samus. ESPECIALLY when she thinks he’s truly dead as there were no Space Pirates that could revive him.

                      1. I know that after all this time to keep this argument going is to beat a dead horse and that you’ve probably heard all this before, but…

The scene is so out of place because Samus was already way past her Ridley PTSD by the evens of this game. Even if you don’t count the Prime series (which we should, but let’s simplify this a bit), she’s already faced Ridley three times (once in the manga, one in Metroid/Zero Mission and one in Super Metroid). Even in Zero Mission, her first actual mission as a bounty hunter, we never see a glimpse of doubt, fear or anything stronger than surprise when she faces Ridley. In fact, her determined look though the visor would indicate otherwise: she’s ready to kick his ass to oblivion. So yeah, Samus WAS portrayed as a very strong character that doesn’t feel fear in his presence.

I don’t think it’s one of the worst points of the game by any means and I’m convinced that people love to overanalyze the shit out of that cutscene intead of judging what actually matters: the game itself, but that doesn’t mean that scene is excusable or well executed. It really clashes with her backstory and what we know about her from the brief cutscenes and monologues from other games. Besides, if she had that reaction in Other M, she should’ve run with her arms flapping above her head when she saw him in Fusion.

                        1. Well unlike in Other M, Samus wasn’t in a mentally fragile state in Metroid Fusion because of the Baby’s death. So she was able to stay calm when faced with Ridley in Fusion. Besides, she knew it wasn’t Ridley but the X parasite in Ridley’s form. So it’s not the same thing.

                          1. The last metroid being killed shouldn’t make her unable to recognize Ridley in his second stage (when it actually looks and attacks similarly to the Ridley she knows) and prepare for the inevitable encounter. More so when it’s implied she suspects of the true nature of the creature he evolved from. You have a fair point about Ridley in Fusion (even when Fusion Ridley is almost the same thing as regular Ridley. More monstrous and loud, even), but it doesn’t excuse what happened in Other M.

                            1. Not exactly. In a fragile state, some people can be pretty stupid sometimes while in the state. ESPECIALLY the strongest of us. When the strongest of us fall, they fall hard.

                              1. But there’s no other point in the story of the game when the narrative hints at Samus being in a weaker emotional state due to the death of the last metroid. Her monologues sound pretty similar to Super Metroid’s introduction and Fusion’s inner thoughts (although slightly more melodramatic). That scene comes very out of nowhere, with no previous preparation at all.

                  5. I’d say play Fusion. It relies heavily on the story and you’ll enjoy the rest of the series (and Super Metroid) a lot more.

                  6. I thought other M was fun… Samus was not properly developed, but I thought the game was fine.

Mertoid Prime 1 & 2 are just epic…as in, Halo wishes it could be as good as those games. ;) (Yes, I’ve played some Halo,… Obviously Microsoft was trying to clone and make it’s own “Metroid Prime” — a rip off from Nintendo if you ask me.

                        1. Keep dreaming fanboy, what I don’t understand is why every time there is a topic about Metroid you retard Metroid Prime fans (since the main 2d fans have nothing to do with you idiots) have to bring Halo into every single article as though you are jealous that it’s a far more popular game series. Wasn’t you Prime fans that said they are two different genres so don’t compare well it seems like you guys keep trying to compare Metroid Prime to it. Metroid try having ammunition, action gameplay more similar to a shooter, and an online multiplayer and they all failed so don’t try to put the trilogy in the same league as Halo, One went downhill after it’s first game b/c Tanabe as Producer couldn’t stick to roots like Miyamoto. The went downhill after the third game but is now going back to its roots, they are different stop comparing.

                        2. I find Halo to be much more fun than Metroid tbh. I’ve played the first one for a really long time and I just couldn’t get enough of it. Although I do think the PS4 is better than the XONE, Mastercheif Collection and Halo 5 might convince me to change my mind.

                            1. Flip-flopping my ass. I could’ve sworn I told you I liked Halo a long time ago. What the fuck, Commander… xD

                              1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

You wanted the Xbox, then the PS4, then the Xbox again, then PC, then PS4, then Xbox then PC 100% and now thinking about the 2 once again…

                                -Undecided detected-

                                1. Nowhere in that comment did I say I was going to get a PS4 or Xbox One. I said I might “change my mind from PS4”. That’s going to be a ton of time from now. I’m getting a PC regardless and nothing can stop me from getting one. I’m not getting neither Xbox One or PS4 until I see enough exclusives that I want on either side.

                          1. Yeah. Halo might be easier for you to grasp since it will probably hold your hand throughout the game unlike Metroid which just drops you into the thick of it & tells you to be an adult & find your own way.

                  7. Please try out at least ONE Metroid Prime game. They’re one of the best games ever made. You should try getting Metroid Prime Trilogy, I got it years ago, but it’s really fuckin expensive now (though it’s worth the purchase).

                  8. Other m is a good game, play it and you’ll see don’t listen to the hipsters that like bandwagoning, I prefer that to most of the metroids and I’ve played them all. ..

                  9. You should get Metroid Prime Trilogy, one disc, 3 games, no more comments needed.
Other M was fine, not great but fine.

                3. metriod prime 123 are amazing games PLAY THEM WII REMOTE AND CHUCK amazing solid games

other M is good too but the story and cut scenes and feminism angle is SHIT

                4. Personally, I think NLG would be a great choice to make a 3DS Metroid.

Though I do question that art style. It’s too cartoony, and while Zelda fans have accepted Wind Waker’s cartoony look, I doubt Metroid would pull it off.

                  1. It’s a drawing concept, So of course it’s going to be perfected in the 3D animation. All games start out with concept arts that look cartoony, after all it is just a concept. They then have their character designers base their models off of the desired concept and go from there.

                5. OMG how did I never think of this, Next Level games would be perfect for metroid and then retro can make another prime game!!!

                6. Next Level Games should work on a new game called Mario Strikers Charged 2 exclusively for Wii U.This would sound amazing!

                  1. I would’ve called it “Mario Strikers Unleashed” :3 Get the connection line? “Super Mario Strikers, charged and the. unleashed” Sounds like a more fitting subtitle. :) BTW, I called it.

                    1. This is why Nintendo wouldn’t allow such sensitive franchises like. Metroid go to ruins. Remember the Mario, Zelda and even DK cartoons? OMG. We don’t wanna have those again, especially Metroid after Other fucking M nearly killed it after the Prime trilogy revived and build it up after Metroid’s 8 year hibernation. ^^;

                7. To me, this just looks like fan art and if it were conceptual design stuff, there is no saying that this was the “actual” direction they were thinking of going in. It was probably just a first draft.

                8. The Prime games were great, but I think it’s time to move away from Metroid Prime. If they want to bring Phazon back, they can do it in a new trilogy. I want my 3rd person Metroid to stay. In fact, this is the main reason why I love Other M & actually prefer it over Metroid Prime. The linearity sucked, though. The voice acting for Samus was pretty… monotonous & not very expressive. The only time the voice actor was not monotonous was during one of the most controversial scenes in the game. The controversial scene isn’t even as bad as people make it out to be. I would have kept out the little girl Samus bit of that scene, though, as it might have gave people the wrong impression. That scene doesn’t just erase the badassery of Samus before & after it for me. In fact, it made her even stronger & as I said in a previous comment, might have gotten her out of whatever funk she was in before the Ridley scene. Before that scene, Samus didn’t really seem like she was really there as her mind was always elsewhere. But once that scene was over, she became more focused & was back to the Samus we all knew & love. Whatever. It’s over & done with. Time for Nintendo to move the series forward! ONWARD TO THE FUTURE!!!

                  1. I’d like that as well.

Metroid Prime should be done. Let the next 3D game be it’s own thing. I’m sick of people whining for Metroid Prime 4.

                9. Oh I wonder how many will complain if the next Metroid, and any future Metroid games that take place after it & Fusion, recognizes Other M as canon. Oh the outcry. This will be good for me, though. It means I, Ridley, truly am Samus’ greatest enemy since she froze in fear to me! Not SA-X, not Dark Samus: ME!! lol Those two Samus lookalikes got nothing on the great & powerful Ridley!

                11. Glad this game got canned art style is terrible for Metroid plus I don’t know if I could take another spin-off Metroid title especially if it’s a sequel to Hunters. I’m very tired of Metroid spin-offs, side stories and prequels I want a damn sequel to Metroid Fusion. Nintendo needs to let SPD1 in charge of 2D Metroid games make a damn game or have Intelligent Systems (Helped R&D1 now SPD1 make Metroid NES, Metroid II, and Super Metroid) make a Fusion sequel.

                13. Correction, I know Sakamoto and his team left SPD1 to form a new identity but it seems his team will work on Metroid Dread sorry for the original post about him being done with Metroid that’s not true still good news though.

                14. Sheesh I don’t get all this Metroid Other M hate, I played and finished the game myself and I enjoyed it just as much as the classic 2D and Prime games. Granted the story was poor and and Samus Arans characterization was off but overall I fought Other M was a decent entry in the franchise.

                15. This the last time I will comment on this so here is the true story I just got it confused. Sakamoto took his personal team and vacated SPD He will work on new projects with his team under a new identity. A mysterious internal Nintendo team will handle Metroid Dread, Warioware, and Rhythm Heaven games. SPD1 is no more, and Sakamoto while he doesn’t intend to return to these games will probably closely talk to the new team to make sure these games play the way they should before only working with his primary team; remember Sakamoto said he may “currently have various task with these games but will no longer work on them.
