IGN Reviews Pokemon Alpha Sapphire & Omega Ruby And Gives It 7.8

The reviews for Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire have started to come pouring in and the first to review the games is IGN. The publication has awarded the remakes a solid 7.8 out of 10 stating that Nintendo has done a fantastic job of recreating Hoenn. However the site says that there’s just too many water Pokemon and too many HMs. Here’s their verdict and you can read the full review, right here.

As a 3D remake, Pokémon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby do a fantastic job of reintroducing Hoenn. Little details, like characters turning their heads to look as you pass or flocks of Wingulls flying overhead, make the region really come to life, and small updates and tweaks help make the journey smoother. Still, a few of its flaws are even more glaring in 3D, especially the excess water Pokémon and often dull navigation of their habitats. The added online features could help mitigate some of the type imbalances — I’m a huge fan of Wonder Trade — and there are even a few post-game surprises to encourage you to keep training well beyond the 25-hour main story.

Thanks, Jester

          1. I just did the math and only 20% of the Pokemon in the game are water types and most of them have mixed types. It’s not unoriginal at all.

      1. Thank you. Someone had to say that. Do people seriously believe a review is only what the game is about? *smh* If you want that just google it wikipedia.

        1. That shouldn’t effect gamings biggest source of reviews. You know. The main influence for a buyer to make their decision based on the RATIONAL choices for their score. Sure it a complaint he had, but that’s used like a crutch.

          1. Fair point there. If it is a personal preference it shouldn’t affect the score harshly, and if it’s a issue that would bother a numerous persons then it’s justifiable and will reflect in the score. However, a personal issue with a feature of a game is still something in a review that should be shared, after all it is a review.

      1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

It wasn’t a bad game, but it certainly isn’t on pair with the second generation in my opinion…

    1. If the person reviewing it doesn’t like it personally he will state it and mark it down. So if he liked it and awarded it higher you’d have no problem? Moron.

      1. And why would gen 3 be the worst? It made many great advancements in Pokemon as a whole and had some great pokemon.

    2. Umm, that’s why it’s IGN’s review… A review is based on somebody’s personal opinion. Even judging a game with an average of everybody’s reviews is flawed statistically… Really, you need an SRS of the population, find the standard deviation or sampling deviation, capture a possible interval, etc…

      1. Hey there, True blue Nintendo fan,

I was scrolling through the comments and I just realized how often your name came up in almost every single comment here. It’s quite irritating, really, when you talk about them needing to “calm down” yet retort so much to those comments. Try searching for your name and there are 27 results. That is way too much, especially since you almost only respond to those who “attack” the review.

But anyway, I would like to address your replies to those people. First of all, yes, I agree that the HMs are too excessive. I always disliked most of them, to be honest. I know this is a remake, but since X&Y was already a big improvement, then perhaps they shouldn’t have remade the “many HMs” aspect of the RSE.

However, I also agree with the other commenters that the phrase, “Too much water” does not warrant a con that will take this game’s rating down to a measly 7.8. Of course, it has too much water; Hoenn is an island region. Plus, that’s the main point of the story, isn’t it? And also, in the video, the IGN reviewer complains about Team Aqua using too many water Pokemon. Well, they’re Team AQUA, and they even have submarines and everything. They are mainly water-type trainers. Of course, the games will reflect these important characters.

Yes, I know that you will say that a review is one person’s opinion. But when this one person is working for an influential site like IGN, then she has to be a lot more knowledgeable about the subjects she’s reviewing, right? I also review for a game site, and although I, too, have my personal biases, I tend to focus on the more rational pros and cons when writing my reviews. For example, so what if I don’t like a game character? If that’s what his character is all about– which is, let’s say, to be disliked– then I won’t give a game 6/10 just because of something so petty.

If the game has too much water, you know what holds (almost) no water in this case? Her review.

  1. Way too much water in those games. I hated surfing for what felt like hours just to find freaking Pacifidlogmiddleofnowherenogymnofun town.

    1. This game is the reason I hate Tentacool. You see that thing so many times in the game it isn’t even funny.

    2. uhh you do realize that the entire point of ruby and sapphire was that there should be neutrality between land and water, too much of one of those and the entire world can be unbalanced. a simple repel can make those “long” journeys of yours shorter you know.

      1. 1. Pretty sure the ‘entire point’ of Ruby/Sapphire was to make money.
        2. “Uuh you do realize” people will always have different opinions. Don’t get so annoyed over pieces of plastic.

        1. No. Game Freak actually wanted to end the Pokemon series after Gold/Silver/Crystal but the Pokemon fanbase grew fast and was already big after the release of just 2 Pokemon games. (by 2 games i mean Gen 1 and Gen 2) It wasn’t just to get money.

                1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

Stop being stupid human child, it is because of high demand since years, same with Majora’s Mask…

                  1. Majora’s Mask was put on the 3DS because that’s where the money is. Guarantee that if Wii U was in 3DS’S position (aka making lots of money) it would’ve been on the Wii U instead.

                    1. No no no no no no no. Both of you idiots are wrong. They began development of Majora’s Mask 3D right after Ocarina of Time 3D. Which implies that they were planning on putting both on 3DS from the beginning starting with Ocarina of Time. Duh!

                      1. Captain HollowGrapeJ

Ignore everything I just said. I completely forgot that MM3D was being developed right after OOT3D. Which means it was gonna go there regardless.

    3. There’s always been tons of water pokemon. Besides why does it matter if tons of other pokemon are available anyway.

    4. All I care about is post-game content really. That’s the making or breaking of a Pokémon game. I’ll wait to hear what kind of post-game this has.

    5. That score does not help me judge the game as the water is not a big negative for me…any reviews done by people who over react to little things like that?

    6. IGN never liked the original, so no surprise here… But, everything that they hate about it is why I love the games. I love the surfing, the water Pokemon, and while I don’t “love” the HM’s, they certainly don’t bother me.

The games are awesome. They were awesome before and they will only be more awesome now that they are in 3D!!!

      1. HMs ignore the fuck out of me! I mean I have great moveset for a Pokemon then I come across a smashable rock… So I have to teach someone Rock Smash which is a really weak move… Thankfully Rock Smash wasn’t a HM anymore in Black/White and instead a TM.

    7. To be fair, this is a remake after all, so I guess a score like that would be expected. It’s still good, though. Also:

      >”Nintendo has done a fantastic job of recreating Hoenn.”
      >Implying Nintendo developed this game.

    9. I think the problem she had with hm slaves was valid ’cause imo, there should be less HMs this gen…but the “too much water” critique is fucking stupid.

    10. Well this is the job of a reviewer…to criticize the pros and cons in video games to help other new people who have plans to buy it know what its like. Though some are pricks this is very true.

But I can’t help but agree on the review, not the score. (I think it deserves a better one). Pokemon is hands down my favorite franchise of all time and had the joys of playing every region as they were introduced. But sadly of all the games, Ruby and Sapphire were my least favorites in the series because of the same reason stated: It had too much water and repetitive Pokemon, tbh I thought team Aqua had won. And yes I know there are a lot of people who LOVE surfing just like I did…but the lack of variety…it was as if playing generation 1 all over again where there would be a 100% chance of tentacool encounters. It got old really fast for me personally.

But I know anyone else would love the experience and would relive it again in a heartbeat, won’t judge others for their loyalty to these games and they should support Pokemon Co. And Game Freak no matter what, ORAS will prove the scores wrong and sell itself like it’s always done without trouble.

So please remember that not everyone will like what you like. Not everyone likes surfing just like there are people who prefer to walk/run to the next town instead of flying there instantly.

      1. what’s wrong with you?
lmao you’ve been flip flopping so hard…maybe your lovers akpodiete and pokemonnerd gave you some gay sex.

          1. It’s no surprise for me that those pair of morons always are the first ones to comment in his youtube channel.

    11. The inclusion of too many HMs as a criticism though? Why? I think she may be the only person who has been bothered by this.

    12. Anyone agreeing with this is stupid, they gave the originals a 9.5/10. This IGN reviewer is just an idiot. What kind of Complaint is “Too much water”? She might as well add “Too much pokemon” and she complained about “too much HM’s” and said that 2 were enough(Fly and Surf). This Dumbass obviously never even played a Pokemon Game Before. Read other reviews from other sites too, most reviews are 8 and 9 or above.

    13. If it’s a remake…. shouldn’t it technically be the same score as its predecessor or better? It’s the same thing plus more? Idk. Kinda whack.

    14. i’m sorry nintendo fans I had to give zelda u a 2/10 becouse it had to link in it…

also mario 3d world gets a 3/10 because there are too much mushrooms and I personally don’t like mushrooms.

    15. And this is why I don’t listen to IGN’s hypocrite BS. I remember they gave the original 9.5, back when the staff was great and professional. Now they just hand games to some jackass who has no idea what Nintendo games are about and they just say “Nope. It’s not COD. 1/10”

Seriously, I read the review and its full of shit and I so bet that the dude reviewing this game is someone who hardly knew or play Nintendo in his/her life.

    16. One thing about Pokemon games is that they can be very complicating. Especially for first timers. I remember when I first played Pokemon Diamond, it took a while for me to understand what the heck HM’s were, and how to use them. Not to mention all the other things you can do in these games.

      1. There are strategy guides you know still. They are perfect for noobs and kids, no need feeling shame, plus they contain small details on stuff good for long time players too.

        1. Yes, I have the Diamond and Pearl strategy guides and Pokedex.
Sadly, I’ve never been able to get into any Pokemon game since Diamond.

          1. That’s too bad, if you were thinking getting back into it I recommend trying this game out. And with the new GTS trading is easier than ever, you’ll never feel alone. lol Battling is of course always at hand too.

    17. Lol. People still care about what IGN gives games anymore? I never understood the point to rating games. Unless you have one person do it, everyone’s rating list is gonna be different. Having a team of raters like IGN has just makes the rating system into a series of meaningless numbers attached to a person’s opinion. And clearly, this lady’s opinions differ from mine. As such, I do not care for what she has to say. I’m going to buy and enjoy the game regardless, so I’m not gonna waste my time reading her opinions of the game. Simple as that.

    18. And then everyone has to waste money buying Max Repels just to avoid them.
But then again, it’s no different from entering caves and encountering Zubats 99.9% of the time.

    19. Just curious….but since when have people actually started caring what ign says about anything? Last time I checked everyone hated them for everything…….

    20. Their negative points: Too much water (Hoenn is an ISLAND region) and too much HMs (Okay, since when 8-11 HMs is too much when past games already had as much)

      ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!

    21. Can you stop putting the score in the title? It really spoils it for people (like me) who want to read the actual review first.

    22. Stupid chick I’ve never heard about before reviews this amazing game and gives it a 7 score because THERE’S TOO MUCH WATER POKEMON!? WTF!? And tweaks? TWEAKS!? The game went from 2D to FULL 3D! What a noob reviewer, I don’t know why Jose Otero didn’t review this game…

    23. LMAO! I just read the whole review and it’s the most stupid review IGN has ever created, not because of the score, but the reasons behind it, too much water? Wow, look I don’t care if you hate HM’s and water and whatever powers or Pokemon you hate or dislike, just say if the game is worth it, and only by saying the story can take 25 hours, I’m in! But seriously, the reasons are very very stupid, how water affects a game which is based on islands? I think this person went surfing all over the place, got lost and got annoyed at the 543543543534 water Pokemon appearing in the sea and instead of using a repeal or going somewhere else kept surfing and having to fight like 67587587 water Pokemon and now she hates the game. Play the game right, and talk about us the quality of the game, not if it has too much water or HM’s, which are only 7! WTF!? The most stupid review I’ve read with the most stupid reasons to lower the score, sorry IGN, but it’s just too funny at the end you take this review seriously…

    25. Seriously, #TooMuchWater? Don’t care about score, I know what I will get if I buy Pokemon game. There is no need for score, but… Really? #TooMuchWater, are you kidding me?

    26. It’s pretty clear this chick wants to be a part of Team Magma.

Look, at first, I was pissed, but now I don’t even care anymore. Because it’s IGN. Take it for a grain of salt for those of you who are going off the wall. I already pre-ordered the game and I’m going to enjoy every bit of it regardless of “popular” opinion. I don’t care that she gave it a 7.8, but the reasons she gave were more so a personal problem than an actual gameplay issue. And she kind of contradicted herself when she said they were faithful remakes, but complained about not getting rid of the “overabundance in water” from the original games.
