The Dragon Quest franchise is quickly nearing its 30th Anniversary – and it’s a celebration that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the game’s creator Yuji Horii. In a special New Year’s message to fans on the official Dragon Quest website, Horii teased plans for the series’ upcoming anniversary in 2016. While the creator skirted around plans for the big 30, Horii mentioned the recently revealed Theatrhythm Dragon Quest for Nintendo 3DS, which is due to release March 26 for Japan, along with mentioning other projects for this year.
Though the Dragon Quest creator leaves us very little to go on, speculation for anniversary plans could include a new mainline game. An official announcement for Dragon Quest XI, however, might not arrive until much later this year. Yuji Horii’s translated message can be found in full below.
Happy New Year, everyone. There is just one year to go until the 30th anniversary of Dragon Quest.
In February, we will release Dragon Quest Heroes, and in March, Theatrhythm Dragon Quest. Additionally, while still to be announced, there are many projects in planning as we head towards the 30th anniversary. And then there’s the release of Dragon Quest X Version 3.0 in the spring. Together alongside our fans and development staff, I hope we keep making the series even bigger and better!
Life is a role-playing game. Here’s to many more years to come of Dragon Quest!

Still no new games in the west. Poo.
Square Enix is a disgrace. The only good decision they made was to bring bravely default and that was thanks to Nintendo!
Loosing faith in western localization
Wow! The 30th anniversary of a game series I’ve never played.
It will be great if they can make an HD remix of all dragon quest from 1 to 9. It ‘s a lot of work but shouldn’t take more than a year.
