GameStop Reveals Trade In Prices Towards New Nintendo 3DS

As you would expect GameStop is accepting trade ins towards the New Nintendo 3DS. You can get $100 if you trade in your Nintendo 3DS XL or PlayStation Vita. Alternatively, if you only have an original Nintendo 3DS to trade in or a Nintendo 2DS then you can get $75 trade in towards your brand new New Nintendo 3DS.

    1. doesn’t matter unfortunately. gamestop will not give you any extra cash at all for limited edition stuff no matter what it is. 100 dollars towards the new one isn’t terrible for gamestop at all but i would still suggest selling on ebay. Even if its only for that extra 20 dollars.

  1. Got me a majoras mask new xl. Was BS gamestop wanted me to pay it off or wouldn’t let me preorder it but whatever i had the money at least

    1. Gamestop should still have a return policy, so take the new system home then do your transfer. Return the new system, then essentially buy the system back while trading in your old one. Just tell your clerk that is what you’re doing.

      1. Might depend on the store. I wanted to preorder a game & reap the benefits, then later cancel it & just use the extra credit to buy something extra. Nope. Workers called me out on my attempt & I believe they denied me my cancellation.

Gamestop definitely has behind-the-scenes rules that we don’t know about, or it could have been just that store. So careful with trying that, not saying it’s a bad idea.

      2. Of course they have a return policy, but it doesn’t work that way.

Once it’s opened it can only be exchanged for the same item, even if it was defected also. They also specifically say they have the right to deny even legitimate returns that haven’t been opened or are defected.

So the most you can hope is that the store you go to, they’ll let you do a system transfer in store. It also states in their promotion, you have to trade in your 3DS XL first before you use the credit to purchase or pre-order the New 3DS. So that doesn’t leave one many options other than doing a system transfer in store.

“Credit must be applied toward the purchase or reservation of a new 3DS. Hardware must have all necessary components for trade. Not valid toward cash trades.”

        1. Yuck. Who wants to sit in a Gamestop for an hour babysitting two 3DSes as they do a system transfer, assuming the Gamestop even has wi-fi. Why don’t they think about this stuff when creating these promotions?

      3. LOL that would never work! no offense but you can’t seriously think that would ever be a good idea!? and come on its gamestop! when have they ever done anything out of the kindness of there hearts.

  2. i wonder if those trade in prices include their corresponding power supply, or would we get to keep them to power the new 3ds!??

    1. You have to give them the AC charger. I’m buying the red 3DS. I’m not a fan of the majors mask one and I already have the between worlds bundle anyways.

  3. Can anyone please tell what would happen to all my digital games on my regular 3Ds XL? Is there like a way to transfer my games to the new 3ds ll? Cuz i have a lot of games and a lot of money spent on them do i dont want to lose them

      1. As far as I’ve heard, Gamestop doesn’t let you do the system transfer in-store. I don’t know first-hand though, since I haven’t traded in any consoles myself there, but that’s what I’ve been told.

        1. Not much you can do with Nintendo’s dopey account system. You are pretty much forced to a do a system transfer in store, so they freaking better allow it if for some stupid reason they don’t. Since you have to use your trade in credit to even buy the New 3DS for this promotion as it states in the details.

I highly doubt they’ll let me take it home to do a system transfer either, and because it’s only in store credit that makes it even more difficult. Plus it isn’t like you can even return opened items when they only do exchanges on opened items in the 30 days of purchase.

I seriously wish Nintendo would change their dumb ass account system already, sickened to death of system transfers. This type of stuff proves why it is so unpractical to have an account system like this. As I’ve said a thousand times today, no one should have to make this kind of effort when buying new system and no one should have to go through a long process to simply access their account again, when with any other company it’s so much easier it isn’t even funny..

Absolutely absurd that I’m sitting here contemplating on bringing in a laptop, to do this at a store. Just thinking about it is so stupid, but I love games and of course I want to play the “New” 3DS games -.-

          1. Absolutely agreed. It’s ridiculous how Nintendo still sticks to such an outdated account-system. And with a system as silly as that, they even had the audacity to limit the number of system transfers you were allowed to perform. At least they managed to take care of that bs, though. Let’s hope they’ll decide to meet today’s standards and update their account system as soon as possible.
And about the transfer in Gamestop stores, I’ve looked a bit into it and it turns out that Gamestop might allow you to take the N3DS home for the system transfer, in return for the full price. After you’re done, you can take your old system to said store, and they’ll give you back the money they would have paid you for the trade-in. Of course I can’t confirm it, as I (obviously) haven’t done it myself and don’t even live in the US – but it’s what I’ve read on a few forums and boards. Doesn’t sound too bad I suppose, but considering it’s Gamestop, I’d definitely want them to assure me that the whole thing really is going to go down like that, instead of them pulling some bs in the end and pay me less ultimately.
If you’re lucky, and the employees are nice, they’ll let you do the transfer in-store, so it might be best to just ask. But you might want to keep in mind that internet connection is required for the process, so you’ll want to make sure that your local store has Wifi if you want to give the in-store transfer a shot.
Or there’s also the option of selling your old system on eBay or Craigslist if you don’t want to worry about the system transfer thing. You might end up getting more money in return than Gamestop would pay you too. But then again, I can imagine that there will be a bunch of people trying to get rid of their old 3DS when the new one comes out, so it’s hard to tell how high the chances for selling one’s own system for a decent price would be if there’s so many offers to choose from for people, so there’s that.
I personally would probably go to Gamestop if I were to buy a new 3DS I think, I’m sure it’s possible to make things work out if you ask them.
Just to add my (kinda lenghty) two cents there. :)

            1. Well I hope that is true, the only thing is they don’t give you cash for this trade in which it says in the details also. That was the only reason I said you won’t be able to just walk in after doing a transfer at home and they hand you the $100 in cash.

Maybe they’ll make an exception because of the mess Nintendo has made, but surely I will make certain before I go in. Knowing the stores around me though, they haven’t given cash for trade ins for years so we’ll see how that goes.

I’m fully prepared to do a total system transfer in store though, so that is good if they do let you. Still unnecessary, but as you said I seriously hope by sometime this year, Nintendo finally makes some significant strides with their account system. Would be great to be able to log into your account on their website also outside of the Wii U, beside Club Nintendo.

            2. Oh yea forgot to add that part about selling on ebay or craiglist. That was what I was going to do, sadly XL’s without games and accessories are pretty much selling for the same price Gamestop trade in value will be unless they aren’t opened, so it’s just easier to go to Gamestop in my opinion.

There are tons on ebay and craiglist too which doesn’t help sell it any faster. Another plus of just going into Gamestop to get it over with. I been checking for sometime on ebay and craigslist, but none of the XL’s have really moved beside the dirt cheap ones which I’m not willing to give mine away for nothing like some people.

              1. Yea, that’s exactly what I meant, at Gamestop you’ll at least have a guarantee for the $100, whereas for eBay/craigslist, you might have to wait quite a while until you even find someone who’ll want to buy your 3DS.
Though it’s weird Gamestop doesn’t pay you in cash? Here in Germany, you get to choose if you want the trade-in money in cash, as a gift card or directly traded into games. I assumed it was the same way over there too.
But either way, I really hope everything will go well for you! Gamestop better doesn’t do anything silly. :)

    1. Firstly, you can do a system transfer from 3DS to 3DS from the System Settings, but if you want to do this trade in thing, then you wouldn’t be able to do the Save Data and Game Transfer. Secondly, your E-Shop downloads are linked to your Nintendo Network ID. So if it’s just your purchases that you are worried about and not your Save Data, then theres that…

    2. I think you need Wi-Fi to do a transfer. I’m almost positive that they won’t let you transfer in most cases because of this.

    3. I lost my digital Ambassador Certificate when I upgraded to my 3DS XL because they told me I didn’t need to do a system transfer, only switch the SD card to the new system. Lost all my free NES games and GB games…. I’d play it safe and do a system transfer in the store before you trade it in. They restore any system immediately after they get it traded in. To transfer to the New 3DS you do not need an internet connection. Says it could take up to two hours tho..

    1. I cant believe they are actually giving 100 bucs for a Vita. Thats surprising, considering they are having so much trouble selling them in the first place…

    2. I traded my Vita this morning on the MM 3DS, but only got the normal trade value of $80. I guess the system wasn’t updated yet.

  4. Yes, trade-in your Vita!

If only these trade-ins are available in my country, and local shops don’t over price on the Majora’s Mask or MH4U 3DS XLs…

  5. I’m not buying a new 3ds until there’s more than one 3ds exclusive, also I alredy have xenoblade chronicles on my wii so I have no reason to get a new 3ds any time soon.

    1. “Trades must be in full working condition to receive full value. Defective items may be eligible for trade at a lesser value.”

  6. I’m going to walk across the road to a gamestop and ask the associate how the transfer of save data and such works if I was to trade in and upgrade to the newer system in about an hour. Then ill know if I should jump in and get a new one or just wait out the storm. A friend told me the Majora’s mask bundle was already sold out at the location im going. We’ll see….

  7. I’ll do what I did last time and just buy the New 3DS for full price, transfer my data, trade it in and buy a game with the trade in value. :P

  8. When i did the upgrade from the normal sized 3DS to the 3DS XL, they let me bring it home and bring it back for the trade in value. I’m sure they will do it again since they know me by heart now.

    1. Yeah, I went in and asked, and I think they’ll let me do this, too. It’s a shame Gamestop HQ doesn’t think about this kind of stuff and build something into it. Not a lot of people are going to want to trade in their 3DS without a system transfer, and I’m afraid many will do so without knowing they even needed a system transfer and will lose their stuff.
