Nintendo America Explains Why Standard New Nintendo 3DS Is Skipping North America

Reading round the internet and it becomes apparent that quite a few people are disappointed that the standard New Nintendo 3DS isn’t being released in North America. Online gaming publication Kotaku contacted Nintendo of America to find out why the system with customisable faceplates is skipping the US. Here’s what a spokesperson for the company had to say about the decision.

Different territories make their own business decisions regarding individual products and timing. We think New Nintendo 3DS XL makes the most sense for our market. Nintendo makes different systems at different price points for a whole range of consumers, and New Nintendo 3DS XL simply expands those choices even further.

So Nintendo, is it ever going to come out here?

We have nothing to announce at this time.

    1. Nintendo Commander Mar-Vell

Why can’t the XL have face plates? All I want is that YOSHI FACE PLATE! GIVE FACE PLATES TO THE XLs!!!!!

    2. i know right… since the new 3ds xl same price as the 3ds xl then i fail to see why they will not release the standard one which basically cost same as the standard 3ds… bet nintendo going to make New 2DS next year.

      1. I´m slighty dissapointed with that…… although we all know that the New Xl model has a lot of advantages over the regular New 3DS (larger screens, better camera, better battery life etc) I still would prefer the regular model, it fits well in pockets, if feels more “portable” than the Xl, which I need to take in a bag, and it has faceplates! I´d prefer the smaller model, but I´ll get the Xl eventually

    3. Well fuck you too, Nintendo. I’m not buying some over-sized game console that is too awkward to carry. My only regret is you won’t ever see the thousands of comments against your bogus business decision.

      1. then why even comment either way your going to buy the new 3ds xl frankly idc as long as i have new 3ds if your going to make a fit about it then do it elsewhere. thankyou have a nice day.

        1. Shut the fuck up u dont control and wtf Nintendo you just literally turned me off, I stood by you during the wii u fiasco but this is unforgivable respect is earned Nintendo and as of this moment you’ve lost mine im a Sony kid until further notice

    4. I do believe that it must have something to do with their low capacity of production….. of course the XL models always sell better, but I do think that they may not have enough supply then they decided to sell it only in Europe for now…

  1. Translation: “We’re lazy and contemptible morons with no respect for our fans and their wants, so we’ve elected to deny them their choice of hardware. Huur duuur~.”

    1. Pretty sure it has nothing to do with being lazy. Nintendo has to be profitable. What if history of 3DS sales here shows the XL is the only model that sells well enough to put the effort, marketing, packaging, and shelf space (for it and the faceplates) behind it? Just because some vocal fans want something doesn’t mean it will sell to the masses. The XL is by far the most popular model.

      1. Well, calling someone lazy is the easiest thing you can do when they do something like this

Besides, it’s not confirmed that they won’t ever, it’s just not coming NOW and as we all know the internet is filled with dumbfucks without any patience

        1. Why would they release the smaller sized 3ds later on? Doesn’t make any sense. People are not going to want to downgrade after purchasing the 3ds xl. We will never see the regular new 3ds in America. It’s obvious that the regular sized 3ds sells poorly in the U.S., so they released the XL only. Makes perfect sense to me. I would never buy the small 3ds. The screen is just too tiny for me.. Red XL all the way.

          1. @Deepsouth The regular New 3DS is not a downgrade. This isn’t like the difference between the original and XL. Both of the New models are the same. Regular is just smaller. And to be honest, I like the bigger size of the XL, but I hate the pixelated look. The regular one had a smaller screen, but it made games look sharper and better. That alone is enough to make me want the New regular over the XL. And plus, the XL one doesn’t have faceplates or the colored buttons either.

    1. Completely untrue, the XL is too large for some and the newXL does not come with faceplates. Disappointing decision by NOA

    2. But what about those of us who wanted the standard because the XL was too large for our hands and would make them cramp up and it’s harder to hold for me because it’s so big

    3. well the original 3ds suffered from screen scratch issues (and i dumped it gladly for an xl as i hated the scratches on the top screen from the bottom screen rim) and it looks like this got fixed with the new3ds. It now has little bumpers like the 3ds xl versions got, and my xl doesn’t scratch itself because of these bumpers, plus the screens are slightly larger which is a welcome improvement. now i want a standard size again, the white one looks so cool. And the coolest thing is the customization and the colored snes buttons.

    1. Oh not this crap again… Must there be a petition for every little thing people don’t like? Put there with the sony fanboy who wanted Smash 3DS in Vita.

Seriously, I’m mad the normal New 3DS won’t come to US, but it’ll take more than 100 signatures, boy.

      1. No matter how long it takes, if we want it we have to let Nintendo know… Stop being stupid. You say you want the normal New 3DS to come here yet you don’t want to sign the petition so we can hopefully make it possible… Where’s the sense in that action?

        1. Nintendo has previously said that petitions and other things of the sort don’t affect their decisions.
And even if, 100 signatures aren’t even remotely enough to convince a company as big as Nintendo to do anything. You would need the thousandsfold of that for them to even notice your petition. Just to *notice* it, mind you, it’s still nowhere near enough to convince them to do it, as not all 100,000 people who signed the petition would actually buy the product they’re asking for, and it’s a quite bad number in terms of sales anyway, especially for hardware.
So, you see, the whole petition thing isn’t quite as easy, really.

          1. Yea, but to get to thousands of signatures you have to have 100 at some point! It may only have a 100 signatures now, maybe 500 next week, and so on and so on… You see how that works?

            1. The petition’s goal is at 500.
I originally said 100 because I viewed it on my phone earlier, and it seemed like its goal was at 100, I apologize for that. But either way, the goal being at 500 doesn’t really make a difference, as it doesn’t change the situation at all.

              1. Yea I agree with that. If all they are trying to get is 500 signatures, it does seem a little pointless. Thier goal should be 100k signatures. Because thats the only way Nintendo will recognize it.

          2. Well, maybe it’s time they started to care about certain petitions like ending region locking, creating an actual account system that isn’t locked to consoles, and bringing certain games like Operation Rainfall & the Fatal Frame V localization campaign.

And if their ignorance keeps up, I’m done with Nintendo forever.

            1. I definitely agree with you, it’s a shame that things people have been requesting for so long don’t seem to bother Nintendo at all. Especially when it’s things that should be taken for granted, seeing how the competition has been offering them for quite some time now.
Let’s just hope Nintendo will get their shit together as soon as possible, because they really need to.

      1. change.org

lemme tell you, the petition is to”change” Nintendo’s stance on denying North Americans the ability to buy their standard New3DS in their country.

I think this is absolutely valid.

  2. Wtf! This is bullshit. I was already going to buy the standard edition to replace my 1st edition 3DS and this is announced. I always preffered the standard because it was more portable and smaller. Oh well, I will have to get a gay XL…

    1. That is what Nintendo of America is banking on. That everyone will just go and get an XL even if they wanted the standard size. Just wait and email or call Nintendo to complain and hopefully they’ll give us the standard size.

  3. Darn you XL for selling well!! In all honesty though, I’m just upset since I prefer the smaller models. I’ll still get the new XL though.

  4. Perhaps Nintendo views early adopters to be adults with large hands and don’t see anyone else buying the smaller version. Will they launch the Ambassador program offering for North America? Will there be a new 2DS or smaller 3DS launch with a Pokemon title in the future? So many unanswered questions.

  5. I never got the larger designs because i took my 3DS with me in my pocket. the new XL is even bigger (not by much but still)

  6. I’ll just wait for the regular to come out here in the US. I know it’ll come out sooner or later. Plus there aren’t any killer exclusives for it yet besides MH4U. I can wait.

    1. Why do you think it will eventually come out? I seriously doubt it will. It makes no sense from a business point of view to release a downgraded version of the 3ds after the bigger and better version… Most people will buy the 3ds XL, and odds are those same people will not buy the smaller 3ds if given the option to later on.

      1. Well I guess the faceplates would be a selling point, at least for me and some other people commenting on YT and news sites like this.

      2. I personally don’t think it will eventually come out, which disappoints me. I also have to say that the XL is more pixelated and less portable than the 3DS so there’s still a market for it. On top of that the XL doesn’t come with faceplates, so to me it seems like the regular New 3DS has a huge advantage over the XL. I’m certainly not going to buy the XL. I’ll wait until the small one comes out, or just buy an older 3ds (I was going to wait until the New one came out before I bought my first 3ds). I think if they just stopped region locking, those of us who wanted a new 3ds(regular size) would just import. SO then it would be problem solved.

  7. To me, it’s because the market is not ready for the faceplate thing, simply because right know, U.S nintendo market is under the Amiibo storm. They announce plenty of things about amiibos during the nintendo direct today. The standard edition will arrive with a new Animal Crossing or Pokémon later this year after all the amiibo have been sold and that the storm will calm down. Just my supposition though…

ps: I got the zelda new 3ds majoras, can’t resist to zelda stuff…

    1. I love my XL currently, because it fixed all of the horrible design problems from the original. Was hoping to get the standard size new 3ds for portability – I WANT to go back!

    2. I’ve had the XL for over a year now. Yeah, I’m used to it. The XL was initially better than the standard version, but I’ve become sick of it’s large size (& my Galaxy S4 Active’s size, too). If my standard’s shoulder button hadn’t broken & Nintendo didn’t want $90 & time to ship & repair just the damn button, I might’ve eventually traded up for a New XL. Instead, I ended up buying the normal XL. Now I wanna go back to a more portable size. I’m fed up w/ the obesession of bigger devices, which flies in the face of portability & advanced tech (smaller IS better). I’m a Texan & I have long fingers, but…

      1:00 – 1:12 [Owen Wilson is a Texan, too, & he agrees]:

      http://youtu.be/8ePVWDcEWo0

      1. Yes. Exactly how I feel! I’ve had my 3DS XL for about 10 months now and it was nice at first but I’m getting sick of its big size. *sigh*

        1. & add to that the possibility New 3DS is going to be 3DS.5 (albeit better than DSi was), there’s no way I’m throwing 200 bones down. Not for a .5, not @ launch, & not ’til I see a must-have exclusive (already bought Xeno on Wii when it released).

However, if it was $160 or less w/ faceplate options & colored buttons, well, that would’ve been a different story. All those incentives, Ninty, burned as if you let Joker loose in Gotham w/ a hill of mob cash. Still, size is the biggest factor for me, & you screwed up that angle.

My hype for New 3DS has turned to hate. Or hey, it created a false boon in my wallet: now that money can be ‘unlocked’ for other things.

    3. Not true, i have an XL and want a standard size now. Because this new one is way better than the first standard model. My XL stays mostly home, i want the regular new3DS to take with me everywhere. The white one looks so awesome!

  8. Its makes sense to me, who wants to give the sony fanboys another opportunity to bash over the screen size, its a good way silence the nitpickers first

  9. Market research: Americans like extra large everything.
    Therefore: America only gets XL.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this was literally the logic behind it. As ever Europe gets better treated than America by Nintendo. If I were American I’d be furious.

    1. Not always. In terms of licencing and games, Europe more than often gets a lot of the games last due to languages, different types of restrictions in different countries and the distribution method is awful to third-world countries which also fall under the PAL region.

Still, you have every right to be angry about this business decision. I can only see Nintendo of America getting shot in the foot with this business decision, as there are a lot of people who still do love customization.

  10. This is unfair Nintendo of America should give us more choices if Uk, Australia & Japan get choices. Why can’t we get choices too?

    1. It’s Europe, not UK. UK is in the European region so say Europe. You only get the XL because Nintendo thinks you have big fat hands. :/

              1. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

Middle-Eastern, European, American,Asian or whatever, you are all equally pathetic, primitive and must be destroyed…

  11. simple, because we don’t buy their products

yeah, we are buying amiibos, we are buying 3ds xl, but honestly, 3ds xl would sell way more than normal 3ds

    it does make sense

  12. You’ve got to be kidding me. Why, Nintendo? I wanted the regular instead of XL. That’s so unfair. *sigh* Well at least there’s still that awesome red XL… :/

  13. I was planning to get the XL anyway, but I don’t see how eliminating the choice of the regular New 3DS would “expands those choices even further.”

  14. Everything’s bigger in ‘Murica! Burgers, portions of fries, and even the 3DSes! YOU ESS AYY YOU ESS AYY YOU ESS AYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

  15. I don’t even care about the faceplates, I just wanted the smaller and cheaper model this time since I already have an XL. Very disappointed, I’m glad that I don’t care about Xenoblade so I won’t be dying to buy an N3DS.

  16. This is a terrible idea… How do we benefit from not having more options… I swear Nintendo are fucking retards sometimes… REALLY stupid thing to do Nintendo… You fucked up… AGAIN

  17. I’m more upset about not being able to have the classic SNES colored buttons and a 3ds that will fit in my pocket than the lack of faceplates. :-(

  18. to be honest the US and the Canadian like it big. Just look at the road, the house, the car, the clothes, the portion you got at the restaurant/drive in and so on. Sorry to upset some of you but that a fact.

It make perfect business sense for NOA to get the XL first and see if they can introduce the standard version at a later date. Also they just have one model to care about which will make the marketing easier, make simpler to sell and hit high target and push the manufacturing level high enough so they can produce the XL cheaper.

Now from a consumer’s point of view I understand the frustration for not having the choice but in a way I hope you guy feel what we felt for decades. But guys you can always come in one of the Country in Europe (easiest one for US will be UK), buy a standard version which will be more expense than your XL version due to the price and how Nintendo does it conversion between US $ and other currency like £ or €. Then hope one guy find a way to by pass the region lock thing (lol)

Me being nasty? Well just a bit, cause I am fed about some people who say: “Europe… who care (or the other variation)”.

    1. “the US and the Canadian like it big”
No we don’t, please don’t make silly assumptions like that.
It makes zero sense for them to be able to release both systems at the same time in other countries and yet skip us. And from what it sounds like they’re not planning to release the standard version at ALL here.
I shouldn’t have to import a console that will more than likely not work with the games in my home country. It’s like nintendo doesn’t want anyone’s money.

      1. Nintendo America have a different target than Nintendo Europe hence why we (europe) end up with 2 flavors of the 3 DS.

I am guessing NOA must sell more units per year in US (and optionally the rest of America) than NEU. therefore it make sense for them to just deal with one modeal instead of two for now.

The way I read the announcement is: “yes there is not plan to get the standard 3 DS release but it’s not impossible”

The choice of the XL instead of the Standard as being expplained in my pevious comment and I would not be surprised if NOA have done the same type of reasoning/silly assumptions as me.

[I shouldn’t have to import a console that will more than likely not work with the games in my home country.]

You are damn right sir, but we in Europe have done it for years and years to get the games we want to play but never been release in our territories. I really understand your frustration 100000% but you won’t get any sympathy from me.

Hence why I would be glad “when” nintendo will remove the region lock (one of many thing Nintendo need to do).

I know it stuck and it might be new for you guys but you have to live with it like we did in the past.

  19. Ew! I DO NOT want an XL. They’re like those embarrassingly large Android Phones. I was planning on buying day one, but not anymore. No standard = No purchase.

  20. Sorry, Nintendo, I’m a big fan but this is just a dumb decision. I was planning on buying a regular New 3DS since the screen size is slightly bigger but it’s convenient pocket size remained. The XL can’t even swap plates. Personally I find the XL gigantic for a handheld and it’s size takes away from the original’s slick design, and with the even bigger New 3DS XL I wouldn’t even consider it. I’ll keep my nice non-new regular 3DS, thank you.

  21. Since you provided a BS excuse for this issue, how about a BS excuse for why the N3DS XL models don’t have AC adapters? Nintendo lost a sale because of this.

    1. America is actually one of the last places to still have Nintendo handhelds come with a charger. Japan stopped including them long ago.

  22. It seems to pointless not to, especially since they discontinued the original model. The XL is really too big for younger players, so what do they have to get? 2DS? Maybe they want the 3D! If it wasn’t for the Majora’s Mask New 3DS XL I’d be fuming, but I’d still prefer the smaller model. And the lack of a charger just baffles me.

  23. As someone who lives in Brazil and import games and consoles from Usa (no nintendo stuff here anymore) I can say: “well, it’s something” :|

  24. I was going for the standard one, but being brazilian I won’t play in public either way because I’m actually terrified of the idea of someone stealing it so: BRING THE XL!

  25. I’m just thankful that it wasn’t the XL that they decided not to bring to North America. THAT is what would have made me angry.

  26. Region locking is whats screwing everything up. Region locking is an ancient practice that Nintendo should have gotten rid of a long time ago.

    1. Speaking of region locking, I thought that Nintendo was going to make the new 3DS region free? At least, Iwata was sort of hinting about that not long ago.

  27. This is bullshit. I was looking forwards to selling my XL in favor of a handheld that is a little more portable, but there’s no point now. What the hell Nintedo.

  28. It makes sense, I mean I love the faceplates but why would I choose faceplates over a bigger screen. I think most people feel the same way too when it comes down to it.

    1. No it doesn’t make sense. Only being able to buy one version while everyone else gets both its not fair. I have an XL but I wanted the regular New Nintendo 3DS. I always thought the original 3DS was too small but they made this new one slightly bigger and it seemed just the right size. And it has colored buttons and faceplates. I’m very disappointed.

  29. I was going to buy one on day 1, to upgrade my original 3DS and to get the woodgrained faceplate. Now I’m not going to buy one at all. Yet another good business strategy from Nintendo!

  30. Now I’m so fucking pissed. Nintendo, you epically disappointed the entire country after they have waited MONTHS for this new 3DS and getting rid of the AC charger for the new XL? Double dick move and I for one will not ever dare excuse this little number. You fucked up yet again. X(

            1. Hmm… Works for me, so I dunno what the issue is. But here’s Wired’s take:

“…So why would Nintendo make such a decision? There are a variety of potential reasons. First, recall that Nintendo has actually phased out the regular 3DS in the US. The only models on sale here are the $200 3DS XL and the $100 Nintendo 2DS, an inexpensive low-end model with a 2-D display and a single-piece molded-plastic body instead of a clamshell design.

“2DS is not for sale in Japan and likely never will be, so it’s not a factor. But in the US, if Nintendo only wants two models on shelves at once, this is how it’s going to do it.

“In Japan, the New 3DS XL has outsold the smaller model by a factor of two to one. In the US, such sales data is not public, but we might surmise that the gap would be similar or perhaps even more pronounced here.

“Finally, launching the New Nintendo 3DS requires also launching faceplates, and lots of them. Nintendo of America has often spoken about the difficulty of getting shelf space at the major retail chains in the United States, often in relation to its Amiibo figurines.

“For whatever reason—whether you want to chalk it up to Nintendo of America drastically underestimating demand for its products, or simply the difficulties of distributing said products across a landmass that is so wide and diverse as the United States—Nintendo simply has issues delivering the same products here as it does in the rest of the world. Amiibos, some of which are impossible to find on store shelves here but plentiful in Europe and Japan, are the latest example.

“Perhaps the launch of this model of 3DS and the faceplates it comes with is a big enough project that Nintendo feels it has to delay it until later. Or maybe it’ll never come here at all: Nintendo 3DS sales seem to be on a downward trend, and Nintendo is operating on razor-thin profit margins, so perhaps it doesn’t want to take the risk that it’s going to ship a more complicated product that consumers might not even really want.”

Anyway, all points seem possible. Bit until a must-have New 3DS exclusive arrives, or NoA does release the standard New 3DS here beforehand, I’m passing.

              1. You missed one thing: The masses actually demanded and wanted the new standard 3DS to come and yet Nintendo screwed that hype in the ass. On top of that, get rid of the seperate charger for the XL and charge the same fucking price to squeeze more with the AC charger on a separate shelf? Its bullshit practice and I’m sure this is gonna affect the sales in the US considerably because now I sure as hell won’t buy another system over this wise ass dick move times 2.

            2. Sorry. That info doesn’t pertain to the matter of the missing AC charger. But apparently Ninty wanted to cut costs & bank on people who already have a charger from the previous system. If not, customers will need to buy it separately.

But the US limited edition Majora’s Mask bundle not only lacks a charger, but the game itself. Yet in Europe, both are included. How’s that for a WTF?

              1. Cut what cost? Do you know how fucking cheap that adapter is and how does it make any fucking sense for people to upgrade by selling the old WITH the adapter to someone else and buy the new without it?

                1. Exactly. Nintendo is being cheap here. They’re not doing anybody any favors. The charger doesn’t even cost that much. It came with the 3DS XL so the “rather than raise the price” excuse is BS. They’ve included it before so why stop? North Americans get no game with the Zelda 3DS bundle. They don’t get a charger included with the New 3DS. They don’t get the regular New 3DS at all either. This is so stupid. WTF are they doing?!

                  1. …..seriously, this breaks my fucking heart so horribly I just wanna rage out. I’m thinking of releasing an email regarding this because this is pure BS in so many ways for US. Now we’re being punished for supporting them and not UK who doesn’t give a flying fuck about Nintendo anyway?!

                    *blood boiling*

                    1. I know. It doesn’t make any sense. *sigh* I still do want that Majora’s Mask New 3DS though. 😐

                          1. …I don’t know. Unless Nintendo changes their minds quick due to the negative backlash, I’m not buying another 3DS. I’ll just stick with the 2DS until someone buys it off my hands with most of my games.

                            1. Ah crap. I just remembered… I was thinking about trading in my 3DS XL for the New XL but I forgot Nintendo doesn’t have the universal account system thing. I’ll have to sacrifice my games if I want one. -_-

                              1. call Nintendo, email nintendo, and chat with Nintendo to let them know how you feel about this. Yesterday i couldn’t even talk to nintendo because of the high call volumes, no option to be on hold at all. So i chatted with Nintendo to let them relay my disappointment to the higher ups who can actually do something about it. i also sent them an email to let them know how upset this made me. i have high hopes that these actions can change Nintendo’s stance, also suggested to just sell these directly through Nintendo if they don’t find any shelf spaces at the retailers. So be proactive and let Nintendo have a piece of your mind.

                1. Faceplates, better for portability, snes colored like buttons and a less pixelated looking screen than the XL.

                  1. meh…..
I have the original 3DS and the 3DS XL, and I’ve never noticed the XL looking any more pixelated. I think people exaggerate. Faceplates are cool, but you can get the same effect just with skins (though I myself swore I’d never put stickers on any console or controller ever again).

                    1. And as far as portability goes, I’ve never had any problems fitting my 3DS XL in my pants pocket. People needs to stop wearing tight jeans.

                2. It looks awesome, and is more portable, has those colored snes buttons, the ability to change faceplates, and i have to say it again, it looks awesome!

              2. The reason why original new 3ds isnt coming to US is because everyone in USA are fat cunts and need the new 3ds xl so it can fit in their fat shit hands.

              3. I think they made the right decision because it will create confusion to consumers because of the “branding name” if they sell 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, New 3DS and New 3DS XL all together. It would be great to discontinue the old models soon (and make it a lot cheaper). I think its a perfect time for an upgrade since I got mine day 1 at 2012.

It is just like smart phones that can be obsolete in 2 or more years.

              4. People are petitioning to change NoA’s approach to the N3DS in North America. There are two petitions out and people are also calling in to let Nintendo know by phone, email, and chat. The information is down below! Please help #OperationFaceplateNA

              5. I was so excited for the coverplates. that’s all I was looking forward to in this new model. If Nintendo got their act together and removed all this region lock bullshit, their problem would be solved. The could only sell the xl version in the us like they wanted, and those who want the standard could buy it on amazon or something. now I dont even want to get a new 3ds xl, Ill stick with my regular 3ds xl.

                1. I’m not buying the new xl model either, I was gonna start off with 2 white standard new3ds’ for my daughter and myself and later another limited edition xl for me, but it looks like I will be sitting this one out now. I feel cheated by Nintendo of America.

I hope they’ll reconsider and choose to release the regular New3ds here too.

              6. Ridley, the Angel of Death

While Nintendo of Europe gets smarter, Nintendo of America gets dumber. Which is actually sad since it’s the opposite with the customers. While Nintendo of America customers actually buy a ton of Nintendo games, Nintendo of Europe customers barely support Nintendo games. Oh the irony!

              7. So I think it’s ridiculous that the standard size won’t be coming to North America. I have put off getting one and when I heard of the new ones I was excited and was going to buy a standard size one because I find the XL to be too large. They should at least give an option to order the standard online so it can be shipped to those in North America.
