Nintendo President Says The Company Wasn’t Cornered Into Smartphone Backtrack

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has gone on record to say that the company wasn’t cornered when it decided to branch out to smartphone and tablet development. Many were surprised when Iwata announced that it had teamed up with DeNA to bring its iconic franchises to smartphones and tablets. Iwata says that this wasn’t because they had run out of options, rather its the result of a changing world regarding how people consume video games.

“A variety of media have written that Nintendo is cornered a number of times, but I do not think we were cornered at all,” he argued. “Needless to say, we are also aware that unless a company can deal with the rapidly changing world, it will face decline. But I would like to emphasise here that our alliance [with DeNA] is not the result of a lack of better options for a cornered company.

“When I first met with [DeNA president and CEO] Mr Moriyasu I started to wonder if there was anything we could work on together. After that, the more we discussed, the more I realized that DeNA knew so many things that Nintendo did not. Mr Moriyasu even said that DeNA did not mind remaining in the background as long as it could collaborate with Nintendo, and I came to realize that this could be a very productive opportunity as in comparison to what Nintendo might have been able to achieve by itself.

“This is why I just said that this is not a decision made out of a lack of options. In fact, Nintendo has received a number of proposals from a variety of companies. Among them, Nintendo has proactively chosen DeNA.”

“We have finally found a clear way to achieve a win-win relationship both for the dedicated video game and smart device businesses by deploying Nintendo IP raised in dedicated video game systems to smart devices,” Iwata said, implying that a smartphone strategy was previously rejected only because Nintendo was yet to identify a satisfactory solution.

“Another thing is collaborating with a powerful partner, DeNA. Instead of one company having to do everything, this partnership will enable us to not assign an excessive number of development staff to areas where weaknesses exist, and as a result will help us avoid disturbances to our software development for dedicated video game systems. We have found an answer to creating an advantageous situation for both sides by letting more people know about Nintendo IP and bridging the gap between these two platforms.

“You mentioned that what I explained today sounded different from what we have said in the past. Please understand that I had been hoping to come up with this sort of solution and that I was finally able to talk about the whole picture today, because various prospects we had been considering and working on have come together as we had hoped, so I personally feel very comfortable today.

“As for your criticism that the decision is late, I think that whether it is late or not will be decided by what we produce in the coming years, and it could rather be described as the best timing. My personal view is that the time is ripe as many factors like various encounters with people, the ways our internal discussions have progressed and the ideas we have generated through that process occurred simultaneously. We will do our best to prove that our decision was made at the right time.”

      1. Sony wanted to own Nintendo’s IPs but Nintendo didn’t want that so they backed out of it.
The only good thing to come out of the CD-I is all of the YouTube poops.

Unfortunately, CD-i also had the unfortunate side effect of making some people afraid of voice acting in Zelda. :/ Not to mention that horrible Zelda cartoon.

It is. The investors fucking pressured them until Nintendo finally broke and said OK

Idk we haven’t really seen his true form yet. As long as cattle masses doesn’t roll out of his fucking mouth, then he’s OK in my book.

Don’t worry..! I’ll fix that loss if Quadraxis has stopped doing it..! Beware the annoying dots……………….

  3. Nintendo Lieutenant Cereza

I wont be holding my breath for any mobile games. But they’ll eventually turn up here. Still, I’m interested in seeing how big a splash they make when they drop the bass. In a market starving for innovation.

How come they’re still far behind others in so many cases then? lmao

          >>>Not really, they just didn’t care, but even worse, they should realise what their failures with the Wii U and the 3DS were and correct them instead of going into Appling corrupt territories and make all new mistakes>>>

          1. FuckWithMeYouKnowIGotIt

Nintendo is too stubborn to listen to anyone so of course they would make the same mistakes over and over again.

Do my eyes device me? You would actually be done with Nintendo if that happened? Either way I doubt that’s going to happen because they are taking too damn long to make a Metroid game for their actual consoles.

                  >>>Probably not alltogether depending on how much effort they put into real gaming in the future but my loyalty would be no more if that happened>>>

Truth be told, I’m kinda like that right now. I’m a little bored with Nintendo; I only care for a certain number of them like Zelda, Xenoblade. But hey, who know what they will pull of at E3; better hope that all the big news won’t be leaked and ruin the hype.

                2. Reason why Metroid skipped N64 because sadly it’s creator died in a fatal car accident which left the company scarred and scattered to find someone who could carry its torch which around 1999 they found the studio to do the job who’s name is Retro Studios. Now the reason why Metroid is silent for a few years because Other M nearly destroyed the franchise with its embarrassing attempt to do something “epic” with Ninja Gaiden gameplay and story telling which in turn became nothing more than a shitty Super Metroid/Fusion rehash with 3rd person view and the pathetic “authorization” upgrade system that ruined the sense of exploration and rewarding players plus the dialog and lore makes no fucking sense nor connect well to make Samus and Adam’s relationship believable and turned Samus into the most cliche, whinny daddy’s girl “bitch in distress” the series have ever dared to see.

            2. And that would be not making the plunge to make the games fans wanted. Nobody but dime store cheap hypocrites ever asked Nintendo to sink lower and cave into Mobile gaming which is a pitiful end of the gaming market. In fact, it shouldn’t even be considered part of the gaming market.

    1. A day late and a dollar short indeed.

Thank goodness they’re finally realizing this at least, but to what extent? They aren’t particularly keeping up with the times in a way I’d prefer. I’d like for them to work on many other things first, before even thinking about mobile nonsense. To me this was nothing but a cheap ploy to keep investors off Iwata’s back.

Obviously, seeing as how against mobile gaming Nintendo was before. Now all the sudden, they’re all for it.

I don’t see going mobile as being a priority for them. Nintendo needs to work on a lot in their sector. The Wii U isn’t selling poorly, or being negatively received by many gamers because Nintendo hasn’t gone mobile…

If they want to do mobile crap, fine, but at least get your other shit together first. That is how I see it.

    1. Oh god, you again.

      Keep the delusion alive.

I’m sorry ahead of time. I haven’t been this vulgar in a while, but you struck a nerve. You are a total and complete fucking moron, if you seriously think motion controls will ever match the precision of a mouse, or even come close for that matter. I honestly don’t care what controller your prefer, that isn’t the point. The point is that there hasn’t been anything on this planet in gaming, to match the precision of a professional gaming mouse.

The problem with motion controls, and the reason they’ll never match the precision of a professional gaming mouse, come down to one simple reason. The human body. A gaming mouse is far more stable on its own, and even more stable with the trackpad it sits on. There isn’t a human on earth that can stay completely still for motion controls to be as accurate.

That is like saying a handgun, is going to be more accurate than a mounted sniper rifle. It’s just dumb.

I have a Razer Ouroboros, that I use at max DPI at all times. I’d love to see anyone with motion controls even stand a chance in any PC FPS of their choosing against me. Not like I’d expect someone as stupid as you to know shit about DPI, or frequency polling anyway.

Not including the fact with many gaming mice these days, you can change the DPI on the fly, with a simple click of a button. Making them even more precise given the situation.

You obviously once again don’t know anything outside of Nintendo, to even be saying such ignorant garbage. As if it upholds any truth. Quite obvious also, you have never owned a good gaming mouse in your life. You probably don’t even own a gaming PC to begin with.

What you’re saying, is the definition of talking out of your ass. Because that is the only place you could have pulled this from.

  7. nintendo will make gaming devices not phones

but a nintenoized phone could happen with a partner say samsung but nintendo would be taking away its own key-core value if they did that

there using phones tablets and pc to expand there own hardware like itunes does for i products

  8. Still a stupid move. The same people who buy their 3rd parties on other systems (everyone but the most diehard Nintendo fans) don’t bother with Nintendo hardware and now they have given them another reason not to bother cause they can get it on a smartphone and a computer (much like steam). And anyone else, who is only mildly into games, is already thinking they might make their games on other consoles.

  9. Pressure… no pressure. Does it even matter? Sounds like an argument over principle to me, which, in the end, tends to be pointless.

    1. Sadly it will probably be very successful for them.

Mobile gamers have to be some of the dumbest people I’ve come across when it comes to anything related to gaming in general. I’m not saying everyone who plays mobile games are dumb, just typically those who have moved to only playing mobile games because they think they are better. There are tons of them that believe their mobile games are of higher quality than anything you’ll see on a consoles or handhelds.

It is beyond fathomable how they come to these conclusions, but they do on the daily basis.

      1. Based on what you just typed, I’m even more disgusted about mobile than ever. Some actually believe their PS2-quality mobile trash is better than console gaming today? WTF is wrong with them? X(

  10. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Shouldn’t this be something Reggie should be saying. I mean, he is the PR guy at Nintendo.
