Miyamoto Didn’t See The General Appeal Of Splatoon At First

The latest edition of EDGE contains plenty of information about Splatoon which is due to be released next month. One of the interesting things we learned is that Shigeru Miyamoto initially didn’t see the appeal of the cute and colourful shooter. However, once it was a little more polished he eventually saw the charm.

“[After] the prototype phase, we had all these ideas about the height, the ink, the characters, and the image of the character and the squid,” co-director Tsubasa Sakaguchi tells Edge. “But we couldn’t kind of filter it down to a final result that would result in a simple, fun game. And during this period, we were being scolded by Mr Miyamoto all the time.”

Miyamoto originally didn’t see the attraction. “He was saying, ‘I don’t understand. What do you want to do? There’s no appeal to this game,’” clarifies producer Hisashi Nogami. “We had the basics,” director Yusuke Amano says. “And then we were like, ‘Let’s add the hiding [in ink] feature; let’s add jumping; we need height, because it’s a 3D map.’ And then we thought, ‘We need to be able to shoot up and down.’ And we realised we’d added all this stuff, and we got confused. We didn’t know what the game was about.”

    >>>Well done my lordship, those Worker Drones needed to be at maximum efficiency>>>

  2. About the VC: You know what I think could work, let the parent’s explicitly turn it on in parental controls and ask for a creditcard verification payment of €0,01. This way it just can’t be used without letting the parents explicitly agree with what’s being enabled. People don’t just pay without reading what for. At least I don’t… :P

  3. Its a miss leading title, he said he didn’t see the appeal before they started adding in the features that make it unique

      >>>Why would his Supremeness see such a flawed protype as a good thing when it obviously must have looked bland at best at that time, he made the game to what it is today thanks to his Commanding Orders>>>

Yeah I can see that. You definitely see a Mario Galaxy influence in story mode. I’m just saying when you hate a concept you’re going to alway still hate concept no matter how much you sugar it to your liking. Maybe he was the one who suggested Mario be in the game but somebody told him no and that it should be a new and original IP. He might see it as something the crowd wants now, but I know he’s still has fucking doubts about this game.

          >>>No, the only thing that would prove his lordships resignation is if the new Starfox turns out to be less of a game than any previous Starfox game>>>

                    1. If it weren’t for him, the Wii U would be dead. He saved the Wii U with Smash Bros. Well, actually it isn’t saved yet. Lmao but he did his best. Put in more effort than Nintendo ever did with the Wii U. XD

                      1. I thought it was MK8 that saved it. We’re not sure about Wii U because the 3DS came first and in terms of modes and exclusive content like stages, 3DS was in fact the better version and it’s online is fixed (sorta) so I enjoy playing that more.

Sakurai did work his ass off and I’m sorry for him forcing himself to work with an injury and everybody is tell him to take a damn vacation. :(

            1. do not say such things, commander. Miyamoto is the kind of developer who thinks gameplay is always over everything. I am not sure if Star Fox will be great, after all, Nintendo didn’t show images or trailers and they are expecting to the e3 and then releasing it without knowing if it will be accepted. i respect what miyamoto did with all his masterpieces and remember we have Metroid Prime thanks to him.

                1. While I wasn’t fond of Miyamoto doing that in SMG2, I don’t necessarily agree that Rosalina needed more development. I think her story in the first Galaxy spoke for itself.

          1. Okay, yes Sticker Star was awful thanks to what he asked Intelligent Systems to do.

But still, I don’t think that’s reason enough to disregard him.

            1. Other M was Yoshio Sakamoto’s fault. Blame him if you don’t like it.

As for Wii Music, I don’t get the complaints about it. It’s not my thing, but my brother plays it all the time.

Mario Party 9 and 10, blame Nd Cube.

              1. Other M and calling Metroid Prime “non-canon” was a huge fuck up and disrespectful for the series and Retro’s great work reviving the IP after Gunpei’s death.

Wii Music was an embarrassment for Nintendo and a waste of a video game.

Mario Party 9/10 fucked the series too

                1. And by the way, no one called Metroid Prime non-canon. The only thing they really said was that Other M was going to reference the main series games (Metroid, Metroid 2, Super Metroid, etc) and the Prime games have always been known as a self-contained spin-off of the series.

                  1. Sakamoto said himself Prime is “non-canon” even though Prime explained some origin details of the Chozo which Other M didn’t explain shit but rehash Metroid Fusion’s plot with Super Metroid bosses.

                    1. In the time period of GameCube, Retro Studios took care of the franchise. Why did you make this decision?

“We wanted to explore Metroid’s possibilities as subjective (first person) action game. A member of Nintendo mentioned Retro, a studio that had great experience in this field. I didn’t participate a lot in these games: I supervised that they maintained the essence of the franchise, but we gave them a lot of liberty with the plot. In fact, I have always seen the story of the Primes as alternative and not integrated in the story of the other Metroids, that’s the reason they had total liberty when creating it. And Samus was different, tougher.”

Nintendo Treehouse producer Nate Bihldorff stated that the scene depicting Samus’ encounter with Ridley “is not a sign of weakness, but of strength. People who call out that scene as anything but empowering are kind of missing the point”. He added that “Samus’ story — her voice, her motivations, everything about her — has largely been a matter of individual perception, especially in the US, where people haven’t read any of the official manga related to her childhood.”

Different people made different games, both people had different conception of their individual games.

                      Go fuck your self stranga

                      1. And if it was so subjective, why and how come Metroid Prime trilogy became a huge hit and fans right now want them back to continue making Metroid then and why Other M is so hated by that same fanbase? Because Prime, even with a new gameplay change, respected the lore and feel of the series. Other M tried to mimic Fusion/Prime so badly and then take a shit on everything those games build up and claim itself to be the best thing to happen since white bread. Well they’re the most generic POS to happen just like white bread being generic over time.

          2. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Yes because one failure obviously shows he’s outlived his usefulness. It’s not like Miyamoto is pulling an Iwata & failing at everything he does.

      2. I heard he’s a dick when it comes to gets not on the Mario and Zelda landscape. He says he wants small companies to come off the ground since he’s getting older, but he controls and gives the Yes or No to all most IP’s and AAA titles coming from nintendo.

        1. I'm a Boss Ass Bitch

I know. I think the was actually supposed to be a a super Mario sunshine shooter spin off. A while a remember at one miyamoto wanted to make his own fps. The game didn’t go his way because I guess the higher ups said no fucking Mario. Make it new and unique. Its a wild theory but for someone like miyamoto who loves making games than yes would say it’s damn right true

    2. This game is going to flop harder then Gay Commander’s sagging tits mainly
      1 its on Wii U
2 its not A Mario shooter
      3 its on Wii U
      4 its on Wii U
5 its a game nobody wants
6 there’s no Freaking Voice chat because Nintendo still thinks this is 1995

      1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

        >>>Where is your god Hitler the deluded ape? Right, its dead by its own cowardly hands>>>

      2. Cookie_Charley NoSignIn

        Troll much?
Alot of people actually do want Splatoon.
Miyamoto didn’t include voice-chat because he wanted it to be a light-hearted game and not deal with 12-year olds like the ones in CoD.

        1. Giving Miyamoto to much credit… This was the first thing I heard about his involvement with this game… It was made up and created by a totally different team you know. Miyamoto didn’t make every game/decision at Nintendo…

          1. Sadly, he does. He gives the yes or no to content being released. He controls a lot of stuff, Iwata lets his influence and his memories cloud the fact that miyamoto isn’t always right (Zelda II, not releasing Star Fox 2). But it’s only gonna change when he dies. Not saying that to be fucked up

        2. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Uhm… You do know Miyamoto isn’t the one in charge of the game, right? A previous article told us it was some other guy that didn’t want to include voice chat into the game, not Miyamoto.

      3. Space Pirate Initiate

        Here’s a rebuttal.
        1 Your full of crap.
        2 Your full of crap.
        3 Your full of crap.
        4 Your full of crap.
        5 Your full of crap.
6 YOUR FULL OF FREAKING CRAP!

      4. I was a little confused… so, you are saying the Wii U is not a good system?

It was hard to tell with all the idiotic mess you posted up.

      1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

        >>>Take this disgustoid out of this universe so I can get rid of its blasphemous stupid irrelevancy>>>

    3. I hope Miyamoto doesn’t turn into the George Lucas of Nintendo. He is a very good gamedesigner, but there are multiple ways to make a good game and Nintendo shouldn’t be stuck with his old fashioned principles forever. Miyamoto has been wrong multiple times, for example he didn’t see the appeal of the Mother series at first too.

      1. So you’ve played it? What’s that? NO??? Then shut up and wait for your opinion AFTER the gane comes out.

            1. Don’t believe you. Also, I’m saying wait until the game comes out before stating your opinion about it. And besides, I never said that your opinion doesn’t matter because It’s different to my own, I said it doesn’t matter because the game isn’t out yet, so to have a solid opinion on the game as a whole is out of the question. Now an opinion on whether it appeals to you and if you want it, then that’s fine, but outright saying that the game sucks, despite the fact that the full game isn’t out yet, then No.

    4. Miyamoto was like: “lol I didn’t make this It won’t ever be good.” He also said the same thing about Captain Toad.

    5. Miyamoto helped make this game what it is today. Without his scolding (can’t picture his smiling face scolding anyone) the game would not be as unique and innovative as it is.

      1. I DON’T! I have no interest in Call Of Duty (or anything even remotely similar).
I only like single-player games with a good story (usually). And this doesn’t strike me as the type of game with a story of any kind.

      1. I don’t think it’s needed. Assuming I pick this up, I’ll be happy to know that I won’t have to listen to anyone babble on while I’m playing.

          1. Meh, that kind of stuff was fun during the old Mario Party days, but I have yet to see many civil situations regarding online shooters.

      1. I just don’t get it. Why does everyone drag Wii Music through the mud like it’s some plague?

I mean, I’m split on most of the Wii series entries, but my brother plays that game all the time. Probably one of his favorites on the Wii actually.

Seeing him enjoy it so much, I don’t get why people so utterly despise it.

        1. It probably has something to do with its presentation at E3 2008 because it was Nintendo’s “big thing” that year.

You DON’T make a casual game like that your flagship E3 title when you’re as big as Nintendo. They got a lot of shit for that.

          1. @TheManofBrisk,
Yeah. Same thing they did with NintendoLand. A casual game that took over the majority of E3.

    6. Hey guys, don’t worry – Miyamoto is still working on those Wii U protoypes that use the gamepad in extraordinarily shitty ways, right?

    7. I kind of agree, I didn’t see the appeal of it all either, but I’m more open minded to this than I was before. Everyone’s all excited over it now but even I’m still kinda speculating.

    8. I don’t find this game appealing just because of the characters. if they had put original nintendo characters (say a lineup like smash bros has) it would look awesome. But thats just my opinion it could be good….they could keep the squid character obviously.

    9. Even Miyamoto didn’t even like it, damn Nintendo…Not even your king didn’t like it…I really hope it turns out to be good.

    10. I want a new Mario Golf on Wii U (and the return of a mini-golf mode). The 3DS Mario Golf did NOT satisfy me.

    11. Personally I still have trouble finding out what will be the fun-factor in this game. I’m kind of seeing some elements but still very few, nothing that will drive me into buying this at least. We’ll see about the online community in the future I guess.
