We were all a little taken aback during the Level-5 Vision 2015 event on Tuesday when it was announced that Fantasy Life 2 would be skipping the Nintendo 3DS and would be for mobile platforms only. Considering the first game launched exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS we thought it was a given that the sequel would arrive on the platform. This clearly isn’t the case. Here’s what Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino had to say regarding the decision to bring it to mobile platforms.
“I’d say Fantasy Life has elements and mechanisms which adults find soothing. Although children play games on dedicated game systems, recently many adults have been playing on smartphones.”

Smartphones and tablets have uses beyond gaming, such as increasing productivity and efficiency in the workplace. Level-5 is appealing to those adults who always have a phone on them and want to play a quick game.
And it’s as Evan said: most adults own smartphones. The same is true to children. Heck, most people anywhere (in an economically developed nation) own a smartphone.
And people who tend to buy and play games seriously tend to have consoles, much in the same way a photographer were have a real camera over a smartphone.

With Amiibo unlockables, mobile games, and DLC/microtransactions (Smash Mii costumes) Nintendo is adopting a lot of things they were against not too long ago. The industry is changing as a whole, and not for the better.

Still, unless they change the game play totally to fit smartphones only, the game could easly be put on the 3DS. So, I’m guessing the original wasn’t a huge success then? That, or they don’t want the fans money.

It’s all about sales, and they would be stupid to put a sequel of a game on a platform that sold barely 800k units… Sequels usually sale less than the original game, but in some cases they sale a little more. Level five just didn’t want to take that chance.. So all you people hating on Level-5, understand they are a business.
Actually sequels tend to sell better than the original title of games. This is why we get so many sequels and less original IP’s.

Not that I’m a proponent of mobile gaming, but when I’m out and about, don’t have my 3DS, and I NEED a gaming fix, I do have a few games on my phone I’ll play. Mobile gaming will NEVER replace console/handheld/PC gaming for me, but I play mobile games when none of my preferences are viable.
I think as long as you say you game and mobile gaming isn’t your primary method, you’re fine.
I’ll make sure to remove Fantasy Life off my wish list. I’ll stick to Story of Seasons as a priority to pick up.

I was actually pretty mad when I first heard the news but I have to just come to not cared anymore. I have and trust me, most people complaining here are people who have played Level-5 games. From there more popular games like the Inazuma Eleven, Yokai, and Professor layton games to their less known titles of Dark Cloud, White Knigh Chronicles, Jean D’arc, and Nino Kuni. Its frustrating that the Fantasy Life (which was an amazing good game) sequel isnt coming back to the 3DS but oh well. Its a decision that they decided to make and I hope they find success with that.

Sorry, that was pretty edgy. It just disappoints me that they wouldn’t put the game on Wii U or something like that. I wouldn’t mind if it was multiplayer, either. It’s that the mobile market is a complete mess, and for them to shamelessly position themselves in that trash heap is disrespectful to us, because we all have a clear vision of what this game’s going to be, and they know we won’t like it.
In my experience it is the complete opposite. Children are no longer familiar with consoles or even classic Nintendo franchises – they have adopted smartphones/tablets as their only gaming media, whereas adults, who have more money to spend on gaming, and who have grown with consoles and Nintendo games, still opt for consoles.

I pray to see the day when mobile gaming dies. The mobile market is killing dedicated consoles and leaving us gamers with the short end of the sticks. Just about every gaming company now rather put down a dumbed down version of their games on smart phones and tablets to make a quick buck than make a polished, worthy game for consoles. Even Nintendo had to bend their backs to mobile devices, because sadly more and more people rather pick up a free to play game they’ll spend 10 min and $50 in micro transactions on then an actually gaming console. I understand it’s probably easier to make money on mobile devices because people get sucked up in micro transactions so easily, but it’s a shame that this is what going to kill real games and gamers. Heck even Apple is trying to make their home button a reversible joystick and a pressure sensitive touch screen to contribute to mobile gaming. Sad times we’re living in right now.

I get their reason “why?”, but it doesn’t make it any less disappointing, instead of FL2 and Layton7 for mobile, couldn’t they just released them as “FL mobile” and “Layton mobile” seeing they both don’t play like their previous games, especially Layton. Then also make a real FL2 and Layton7 for 3DS or even WiiU or better, both?
I just wish Level-5 would support the WiiU. Would love to play FL, YW, Layton or even the new Snack World on WiiU, or even cross platform between WiiU, 3DS and iOS (seeing as Nintendo is going iOS too). Also a port of Ni no Kuni for WiiU or a new Nintendo exclusive series. Maybe we’ll more support on NX? Hopefully.
it’s a business decision based on the Japanese market and metric on how people play games in today society. Soon in a very near future I will have my pc and my retro consoles to play real video game. I will be among the few who do want a game which does not try to screw you and try to get every cents/penny in your wallet to even pass a level. Hope the game is not successful and make you lose a lot of money.
