Mother 3: Reggie Says Never Say Never, But Nothing To Announce Right Now

Fans have been clamouring for Nintendo of America and Nintendo Europe to announce Mother 3 for the Wii U Virtual Console. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime says he hears fans cries but says that the company is “constantly thinking about the investment and then return for a game like that.” We’ve got Earthbound and Earthbound Beginnings so who knows? Maybe we will get Mother 3 in the future.

Fils-Aime: Look, again, I think this is an example that demonstrates we’re constantly listening. We’re hearing what the fans say. And we thought it was great to bring back the very first Mother, Earthbound Beginnings here in the market. It’s been out for sale and doing quite well in the eShop. Again, we’ll never say never, but there’s nothing to announce right now.”

Totilo: “Of course not. But Earthbound, when that came out about a year ago [Note from Stephen: whoops, make that two years ago!] on Virtual Console, did you guys have an expectation about how that would do? Did that exceed expectations and perhaps influence the decision to release this one?”

Fils-Aime: “The Mother/Earthbound series is quite niche. And so for us it’s constantly thinking about the investment and then return for a game like that. There is quite a bit of localization to be done and we just need to make sure that volumetrically there’s enough volume to offset that investment.”

Totilo: “Is it safe to assume that you guys are pretty happy with how Earthbound was received last year and that helped motivate and get Mother 1 out?”

Fils-Aime: “That’s exactly right. “

    1. Big Talk Reggie, but you’re basically saying that Mother 3 won’t come out as long as you’re around. While you’re delaying that Sony is giving us the FF VII remake that we’ve been wanting and Xbox is finally getting a mild form of backwards compatibility. I really think that Reggie’s been very bad for Nintendo and he’s putting them on a dangerous path towards destruction.

      1. Galactus The Planet Devourer

        >>> I’ve never liked Reggie. I’m surprised he’s lasted this long! I truly believe he’s been horrible for Nintendo. I don’t like Iwata anymore either.

          1. Ridley 4 Smash DLC!

Disliking that idiot Iwata & his stooge Reggie is being loyal. Unless you think wanting to overthrow a tyrant king that is bad for your country is not liking your country. What you just said is actually pretty stupid, to be honest. And I usually don’t have any problems with what you say.

          2. At what point did he ever say “It’ll never come when I’m around”? He said, “Nothing to announce -right now-” as in “at the moment”, or “there might be announcements for it later”. Plus, We JUST got Earthbound Beginnings (Mother 1) around the same time that the Japanese eShop got Mother 1 there and Mother 3 isn’t even out over there yet. Just chill out, man.

            1. This is the guy who said that he would kick someone’s but next year at E3 and then didn’t even play the game so he got humiliated in front of thousands of people man….I am pretty chill though

              1. What does that have to do with what I just said, though? The guy was having fun. Yeah, it was painful to watch but it wasn’t like his friggin’ life was on the line. All that aside, how does that change anything that I just said?

                    1. Not 5th in SSB4…not by a longshot. Reggie was likely doomed, but he should have actually played so that he wouldn’t have made a fool of himself. Especially considering that there were items in play. Hungry Box is only decent at SSB4 and the average player on Gamefaqs could beat him, he’s too busy to really play the game that much anymore.

                    2. Dude, he was fighting Hungry Box. He already knew he didn’t stand a chance from that guy from the beginning. Why should he have to waste time trying to perfect his smash skills when it’s completely unnecessary? It most certainly does NOT show that he will say one thing and not go through with it. That is ridiculous to say in a situation like this. Find a better example if you want to make a valid argument.

                      1. Hungry Box….this is not melee, this is SSB4. Look up his matches in this game and tell me that the guy is an expert. Hungry Box is decent, but Reggie should have tried to actually learn how to play. This is a great example.

                    3. There was literally nothing they needed to do with earthbound beginning though. they had an official translation ready to publish back in the eighties and never went through with it.

                    4. They should remake Mother 3 in HD for the Wii U, and have an English version of it. Let’s be honest. Why would any of us want Mother 3 on the eshop when we can already play the fan translation? I love the game but there’s no point in localizing the original unless they remake it.

                    5. It will likely come out. if he got no news about this he wouldnt have said jack shit. and it would make him look like a horrible fucker that he would mention this just to get peoples hopes up

                      1. I think that they want to see the sales on Earthbound Begginings before going ahead with Mother 3, and so far it looks good, I haven’t lost all faith in this company.

                      2. I’m still hoping for a physical, retail release (on Wii U) of the entire Earthbound trilogy. Maybe with enhanced HD graphics. Being only on eShop is almost as if they still haven’t officially been released. Yes, I downloaded Earthbound and Earthbound Beginnings. But I still want them on a physical disc.

                      3. Does anybody take Reggie serious anymore? More damage control as usual.

Either release Mother 3 in NA or don’t, not “NEVER SAY NEVER”. End of story

                      4. As much as I love the series, if its only released as a virtual console title and not as a physical trilogy, then I will just stick to my original Japanese copy and my fan-translated reproduction copy.

                        1. Funny thing is, I’ve owned Earthbound Zero on NES for many years. But I never tried playing it, other than looking at it for a while and getting defeated over and over. I was a bit afraid to play it “seriously” because I didn’t know how reliable the battery in it was. And I didn’t want to get real far in the game, only to have the battery go bad and everything get erased.

                      5. Well, if nintendo released mother 1 & 2 on vc, then that should guarantee us a mother 3, there are some homosexual innuendos, but fire emblem is going to have gay marriage, so nintendo needs to open up to more things like this.
