Scott Moffitt: It’s Not A Transitional Year For Nintendo Platforms

This year’s E3 event was a slight disappointment to fans. As we know a number of the games showcased had already been announced last year and also a few of the new titles were spinoffs of traditional series. Some wonder if Nintendo is in a transitional period before it releases the NX onto the market. However, Nintendo of America executive VP of sales and marketing Scott Moffitt, says this simply isn’t the case. Moffitt points out that the company has 14 games between now and the end of the year. He confirms that eight of them are for the Wii U and the other six are for the Nintendo 3DS.

“I wouldn’t view it as a transitional year at all for us. At least, I don’t think of it that way. We’re bringing a plethora of great games to the market this year. We have 14 games we’re launching between now and the end of the year, eight of them on Wii U and six of them on 3DS. They’re great, bold, imaginative, transformational games… Our company is always moving on many different dimensions, but E3 is probably not the place to talk about a theme park experience, it’s not a mobile game show. So a lot of those things are really better talked about and discussed at other times of the year. We focus on games, games, games. We make great games and we want to showcase those here and allow fans to play them.”

    1. No, Reggie said they’d be TALKING about NX
      Not releasing it.
They TALKED ABOUT Wii U a few years before release
So no, it’s not what Reggie said
Nobody knows how to listen in this goddamn fanbase.

        Go to 10:25.

In addition, you aren’t understanding what a transitional period represents. Nintendo is holding off on most development for the Wii U, moving most projects over to the NX for launch titles or just as a more “secure” bet.

Also, is there really a need to get so aggrieved over my comment?

        1. “Nintendo is holding off on most development for the Wii U, moving most projects over to the NX for launch titles”

          Source? no?
          then is bullshit.

          1. That’s what I personally think. There’s a disturbing lack of many AAA games coming out for Wii U IMO. Sorry for not adding it! :)

            1. This confuses me. Most of the “2014 games” are “2015 games” as far as the E3 announcements go. There was Mario Kart 8 and Smash last year. This year: Splatoon, Yoshi, Xenoblade, Mario Maker and Starfox, just off the top of my mind. All from the 2014 E3 announcements.

      2. omg! why can’t you guys see it as yet. the writing is on the wall. I’ve been saying this for so long and with every bit of info that keeps coming out, it just keeps confirming it. Scott basically confirmed it again, “at least i don’t view it as a transitional year”. The NX is coming at the end of 2016 and i can bet my last dime that the new Zelda will be a launch title for it as well as the swan song for the WiiU.

        1. Remember when they talked about the Wii U in, like, 2010 or 2011?
It’s not releasing at the end of 2016 GODDAMNIT
It would be a late 2017 or summer 2018 release at the soonest.

          1. Why do you expect everything to be exactly the same? You mean companies can’t shift their schedules?

    2. You got a crush on Reggie bruh you like to talk about him alot i guess you want him to be your daddy…

  1. Not really worried about this year, and I don’t think that many of us fans are. New games are coming, and we will surely buy some of them. What concerns me more is next year.

I’m actually hoping that 2016 will be a transitional period, and hear me out before you jump in for the kill. The alternative, in my mind, is that the Wii U releases drop off of a cliff completely.

A transitional period would entail slowed production with only four to five major releases along the course of the year. That’s much better than the possibility of “SMTxFE” and “Zelda” being the only significant retail releases (with nothing but a few paltry eShop releases to fill the void).

Provided that Nintendo releases a few unannounced A or AA titles (ala this year’s “Mario Party”/”Kirby” games) in addition to some B hits on eShop (ala Dr. Luigi) and the previously mentioned big-hitters, I will feel satisfied that Nintendo has followed through with their promise to stand by Wii U owners.

Would I like to see a pair of huge games next year? Most definitely. “Diddy Kong Racing 2”, “F-Zero LGX”, “Metroid Dread”, “Kid Icarus: Onslaught”, “Mach Rider Returns”, “Eternal Darkness 2: Shadow of the Eternals”, or “Pokemon Universe” would all be a hugely welcome surprise. I also don’t see any of those coming…

A “Pokken Tournament” port, a localization of “Dragon Quest X”, those seems infinitely more likely. Couple those with a “Mario Golf” game and the known duo of the “Fire Emblem” cross-over and the new “Zelda”, add in “Mother 3” and some GCN games on the eShop, and we wouldn’t have an awful final year for the Wii U.

  2. Ha, ok. Sure, Scott. Sure. No big Wii U games for the summer. Mario Maker and Yoshi during the fall, and Xenoblade in December, with Star Fox thrown in there somewhere (unless they delay it, which I wouldn’t be surprised if they did).

    1. Meanwhile, Zelda delayed, so most likely a double release on Wii U and NX, and Metroid MAYBE on the NX? Who the hell knows anymore with all the bullshitting they do. Keep up the spin, Scott.

      1. So Nintendo says. They’ve lied before. They said no game droughts in 2015 but oh my! Look at what we got! A bloody game drought. -.- How many times do some of you have to be lied to before you start taking the promises they make with a grain of salt?

  3. Of course when they’re asked “Are you giving up on the Wii U?” they’re not going to respond with “Yeah, kinda. We have a few great games left and then we’re done with it.” but they’ve responded to individual questions in the opposite way.

When’s the next main series Mario game coming? Nintendo: “At this point, probably on the console after the Wii U.” When’s the next main series Metroid coming? Nintendo: “If we started today, it would be the NX.” When’s the next F-Zero coming? Nintendo: “Not on the Wii U. Probably our next console.” They don’t need to be asked about the next Mario Kart or Smash Bros. games because we know they’re one per console. So we get Zelda as the swan song, but they haven’t talked about 2016 Wii U games because 2016 is probably going to be the year comparable to the last year of the Wii where we get one game while they’re working on NX launch titles.

  4. 2015 has lots of games that look pretty good.

2016 is what I would be more concerned about. There is still a nagging feeling NX could drop next year and cannibalize potential Wii U games for itself. I just hope NX debuts in 2017.

  5. Here are the list of those 8 games star fox Mario maker yoshis woolly world xenoblade animal crossing Wii u fatetal frame Mario tennis ultra smash x fire emblem there you go bro sorry about the crap grammar
