Miyamoto And Takashi Tezuka Talk About The Creation Of Super Mario Bros. World 1-1

Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka recently had an interview with Eurogamer, which included a walk-through of how the original Super Mario Bros. World 1-1 was made.

Mr Miyamoto explains how he decided on certain aspects of the level including movement, Goombas and how he placed certain objects to allow the user to learn as they progress through the level. Miyamoto also reflects on the sentimentality of Super Mario Bros., which was his first creation as a game designer. Tezuka reveals that Super Mario 3 was the most memorable for him, due to it being the first project he directed and his involvement in creating the concept.

      1. *Perfected most genres and made the fun. Platformers had existed before then (though limited), and so did adventure games, but Miyamoto managed to transform those genres into what we have today with Mario, Metroid, Zelda, Donkey Kong, and many more. He even has created games like Pikmin that I almost feel belongs in its own genre itself.

  1. Genius. The first 3 min of the video is good for implementing into Mario Maker levels. I’ll probably condition the player in most levels, but some troll them near the end.

    1. All main Mario games (at least first 2D games, and and most 3D games, don’t know how much it apply to the NSMB games) follow this concept. There’s a video on YouTube that explains how it in Super Mario 3D World, don’t remember the name. Anyways, the concept is that new game mecanics must first be introduced in a safe way, were the player can experiment. Then, they build up challenge, until a final showdown with said game mecanic. After that, the game mecanic (be it an item, moving platforms, some type of enemy etc.) doesn’t appear in a new level without being needed in that new concept. They don’t just creat game mecanics, and when they have them all, put lots of the different things in the same level.

  2. Haters will be haters but, if it weren’t for Mario , gaming could be really different today or maybe none existent . I mean we’d probably have games, but they may be more like retard phone games than actual immersive games. If there were no Nintendo, there would be no one to steal ideas from …
