Nintendo Explains How They Go About Making Fun And Unique Titles

Gamasutra has run an exclusive interview with Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash producer Risa Tabata and Kensuke Tanabe. Both of the developers talk at length about how Nintendo goes about creating the iconic franchises that we all grew up with. Tabata revealed that the basic element they start with is fun and Tanabe explains that they build on that with a unique selling point.

“First, the basic idea is to have the fun element of the game. As long as we can see that, we can move forward with that game. There are cases where we will start with using documents to lay out the plan, but this time we thought it would be nice to get the feeling of the game, so they (Skip) were able to come up with a prototype fairly quickly.” – Tabata

‘Nintendo, itself, I believe we create games in a very unique way. First, we don’t create a lot of documents when we go through the development of a game. There are companies that I know that have a huge stack of documents listing up basically the things they want to incorporate in the game. Nintendo has its own way.” – Tanabe

“We don’t start a project until we know what’s going to be the main core of that project. Once we know what’s going to be the baseline, the core of that game, the fun element of it, then we start to create the prototypes and play around with it, and start adding elements to make it a fun game — what we can do to make it a fun experience. In that process, obviously, we have a lot of ideas that will get passed through, and some of them will get dropped or moved forward.” – Tabata

“Among all of these things that we do to come up with a game, by simply creating one game it will be extremely difficult for a development company to understand the importance of that. And that’s mainly the reason we tend to work with [developers] for long periods of time. So we can get them to understand the philosophy and idea behind the process we go through at Nintendo. And for those companies that end up understanding our ideas, and agreeing to work that way, those are essentially the companies that will work with us for the years to follow.” – Tanabe

I really think your definition of “fun” can use some refining every now and then Nintendo.

I wonder if they thought having to use two working Gamepads to transfer data between Wii Us was fun. If they did, I’m not having fun as I only have one working Gamepad. Looks like I wasted over 200 bucks for a refurbished Wii U when I could have just paid for a Gamepad & sent my broken Wii U in to be repaired. If I lost data & all of the money I spent on DLC & digital games because they fucked something up during the repair process, oh well as I’m probably still going to lose it even with this refurbished Wii U I got in the mail today as I’ll have to get everything all over again.

Ya know what. FUCK THAT BULLSHIT! Nintendo can take the Wii U & shove it up their fucking asses! I’m going to get Fatal Frame V, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Star Fox Zero, & Zelda U. After that, I’m out til the NX releases! Unless they fuck that shit up too & don’t adopt a fucking cloud service for the god damn console! There better be an update later to all Wii U consoles that unlocks the god damn NNID from being console locked.

Til then, I’m going all in with the PS4 & maybe even the fucking Xbone. I’m tired of NintenD’OH! ass raping me every chance they fucking get. “Let’s be innovative with the data transfer by forcing people to use two functioning $100+ expensive controllers even though being able to connect them to the internet should be good enough! Data transferring between consoles isn’t complicated enough! YAY!!! INNOVATION!!!” *angry eye twitch* I really should have researched the wii u to wii u data transfer before giving even more money to Nintendo to support their retarded ideas for home consoles! But with how well 3ds to 3ds data transfer works, I didn’t think Nintendo would do something retarded with the Wii U’s data transfer! Boy was I fucking wrong!

If I knew how to do it & had the right tools for it, I’d take them both apart & just switch some of the insides around then toss the broken pieces in the trash. Problem solved. Sadly, I have neither.

do something so fucking retarded* Fixed!

At this very moment, what little faith I did have in Nintendo is now completely & utterly obliterated!

Well I suggest you stay gone. The only way to have anything nice for your avatar anymore that isn’t everyday attire is by way of actual money. So if you want to have one or two accounts with a ton of items & to look nice, you’d have to spend around 50-100 bucks to do it. Gaia Online has also become one giant casino these days, too. And not the good kind of casino, either!

Oh & one time back in 2013, if I remember the year correctly, they were selling the original Angelic Halo on what they call the Cash Shop for 9900 gaia cash. That’s 99 bucks, by the way.

  4. i think nintendo making alot of points about the unique titles they develop for over a few years but i gotta say they do know good judgement about there titles on consoles but the one point i gonna make is that nintendo is basically making games just for fun for everyone and making titles more accurate however depending how much titles they make on Wii U the Wii U system will still have more titles in a few years but the Wii U gamepad they use of other titles are in good used.

  5. sure, sure. except now they’re starting to make games no one wants. they need to be careful before even the blind fanboys abandon them too.

    1. While I’m not defending Federation Force or Amiibo Festival, keep in mind that what the market wants isn’t always what the creators want. They DO have a right to make the games and stories THEY want. Are we allowed to criticize it if we don’t like it? Of course, but keep in mind not everything has to revolve around market research and focus groups.
