Rumour: More Troubling Information Comes To Light Regarding Star Fox Zero Development

You may have heard last week that a rumour was doing the rounds stating that development for Star Fox Zero isn’t going as well as Nintendo had hoped. This makes sense as the game was delayed from 2015 and pushed back till April this year. But the troubles with the game are apparently worse than previously thought and it seems to revolve around the controls and the two screen factor with the TV and Wii U GamePad. More information was brought to light regarding this from investigative journalist Liam Robertson who says that he has heard similar rumblings. Here’s what he had to say.

-||Either they are having problems with an added gameplay feature or they simply cannot tweak it correctly as they want it to, assuming the rumour turns out to be true||-

    1. i do hope they get it done and tweaked right so that we dont end up with another delay. i would say another delay would be good but look at mighty no.9, got like 3 delays and we dont want people to loose interest in starfox zero.

      1. |||Nintendo Dark Commander Quadraxis-NX Prime|||

-||The only way of totally diminishing the loss of interest for Starfox would be to release it at the latest 1 month before E3, otherwise it’s just going to be a gigantic failure||-

        1. Quadradus, do you think Nintendo’s E3 conference will be mind blowing? Don’t get me wrong, I would like to see Nintendo kicking everyone’s arses, but… See what happened at 2015…

          1. But then again, see 2014.

I haven’t followed many of their console announcements, though. Their Wii U announcement wasn’t that good… Let’s just hope for the best!

            1. I know, but back in 2014, we all had high hopes the Wii U would turn around sometime — that feeling positively boosted our perception of the digital event.

Not saying that event was bad itself — on the contrary, it was great. But some of us are already tired of waiting for something that seems will never happen.

              1. Well, the sketches were awesome, especially how Nintendo laughes about themself (“Another Mario game”, “Where’s Mother 3?!”) and the Reggie/Iwata fight, and they showed lots of great games, especially Splatoon.

2015, on the other hand… I didn’t even realize how bad it was when it was over. I just felt empty, and tried to find out how ‘what we got’ matched up with ‘what we wanted’…

                1. I think that the problem with Nintendo’s E3 presentation was the fact that it was kind of spread out compared to normal. We got a good amount of information before and after the event, whereas before almost all info was focused on the digital event.

                  The puppets were great though.

            1. Aren’t you Nintendo Mark Conrade Quadradus? XD

To be honest… Anything that Nintendo pull off of their hat will be better than last year’s E3.

  2. Nintendo wouldn’t have these development issues if they would just stop trying to implement dumbass gimmicky controls in every single game and just give people what they want, basic goddamn controls with a normal goddamn controller!

          1. Key word in this article and the one you listed is rumor. Rumors can be true and can be false. Rumors have never been good for anything. It causes confusion and misinformation.

    1. I would agree. It seems unnecessary to have the tv screen showing you a 3rd person mode and the gamepad showing you a first person mode. I know they are trying to find a use for the game pad, but like seriously, I don’t think any of the fans really want this, I think fans just want a star fox game. I get they want to go for more of a cinematic feel, but what good is it, if I am always staring at the game pad to play the game? I’m not getting to watch what’s going on on the TV.

      1. I personally never liked to share my attention between two screens when using the Wii U.

It fits the best on handhelds, and should have been kept as a exclusive feature of them.

      2. This is what I didn’t like about Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. The game looks soooo good on my 60 inch HD TV, yet I’m forced to look at the gamepad the whole time…

  3. Hum… The Wii U has been around 3 years, plus, let’s say, 3 years of development, which gives Nintendo more or less 6 years handling it.

Six years of experience with Wii U’s two screens and they still cannot master it — this includes helping Platinum. I really don’t know what to think in the case this is true.

      1. Yeah, definitely.

That makes me wonder why not keep it simple, then.

“Keep it simple”: to release an “orthodox” Star Fox game, with simple controls, writing off the cockpit view in order to use the freed processing power in a way to crowd the screen and give us the dogfighting ultimate experience.

        1. The different views is what is giving me interest in this game. Never like Star Fox before but have been giving some games a chance. Example Smash Bros. NEVER like it until this generation due to style. So I’m glad these “gimmicks” are included so a guy like me can give the game a chance.

          1. Then, I’m afraid this new installment will look appealing mostly to newcomers. I’m a huge Star Fox fan, and need to say that I feel uncomfortable with the idea of using unorthodox controls to play it.

Don’t know about the others fans, though.

              1. Hopefully Nintendo will provide a demo for it since the last Star Fox title is almost 10 years old and new people stated gaming sincen then. Or one still have the opportunity to go somewhere in order to play it, or even rent it before buying it.

For me, it will be day one regardless of what happens until the end of the development. I want a new Star Fox so hard…

      2. It actually isn’t. They are using a bluetooth connection to stream content to the gamepad screen, while also send a signal from button input. It’s simple when it’s just a map or inventory screen, because they are just rendering what is essentially a static screen. Sending video, over a wireless connection, in real time is taxing on the system. The idea works on paper, but if you don’t have the hardware to support it, it will fail. That’s why the quality drops to much when you try to do multiplayer game using the gamepad. They are trying to basically do two different camera’s with Starfox, which means the game is technically rendering twice, so if they are having issues, it makes sense.

      1. My point exactly. So it was supposed to come out back then and they’re still having problems with the control scheme of the damn game by now? How incompetent are they, really?

If creating a decent enough control scheme has proven to be so difficult, it may have to do with the fundamental design of the game being flawed, just an idea. This is a game made by Miyamoto with the help of Platinum, they should know better by now.

        1. You nailed it. They are professional developers; they are supposed to come up with solutions in a reasonable time frame.

Sadly, it seems that the fundamental design of the game was indeed done wrong. In that case, it’s better to just get the scratch, dump it forever and start it all again taking into account what didn’t properly work in the past. But no, they keep amending something that seems to be already a patchwork quilt…

          1. Yeah, I don’t get the stubbornness. Sure, the concept looks pretty neat on paper, but concepts should be subordinated to the game in the end, not the other way around. I know that the game will run smoothly once it’s released, but it is worth all the trouble if the game doesn’t feel good to play in the first place?

Some people give Miyamoto much more flack than he deserves, in my opinion, but all the problems surrounding this game are not helping his image one bit.

            1. In my worst days, I used to post here some angry things like “I can’t wait to live the day Miyamoto retires!”, “Miyamoto’s retirement can’t come soon enough!”

Not that I changed my mind; I just no longer express my feelings, LOL!

I’m thankful for everything he did for the gaming industry, and, above all, for Nintendo. But one needs to know their limits and be wise enough to leave the stage while the audience is still willing to stand up and applaud.

                1. Someone used these exact words a while ago here at MNN: “After the Wii, Nintendo became cocky.”

                  I couldn’t agree more.

    1. Thank you! Because of their bs rumors, people where expecting Shovel Knight while Cloud Strife and Bayonetta come out of nowhere XD Where where they on that one??

Their attempts really just come off as shameless attention grabbing to me.

      1. I’m glad there are others who ignore these “rumors”. I’ve heard countless stories that never came true before Wii U launched. I’ve learned to wait until Nintendo confirms stuff before I flip out. I’m sick of listening to these Twitter users and then nothing ever happening.

They are preying on people’s impatience and hunger for more news. Maybe they have a secret goal that making noise will get Nintendo to talk but (sadly) they talk when they are ready. I do want to hear more about Star Fox but Nintendo isn’t talking and I have to deal with that.

  4. There are so many damn rumors going around XD Though, I feel like Nintendo would have announced another delay by now if this where the case… Plus, the strategy guides already have all the bases covered with this game (It seems that way, at least)

I really wanna play this, but I’m gonna be occupied with every last detail of FE Fates for a while, so I don’t mind waiting if it does end up delayed :p I want a fun and engaging game with replay value, so a delay isn’t that big a deal for me regardless.

    1. Yeah, I first thought the same about the strategy guide — not only the content, but also about the release date. But… They can push it back, and the content can be changed fast.

I would say I also rather have Star Fox Zero delayed than having a half-assed game.

  5. Pingback: Rumor: Star Fox Zero having problems with development. - Page 2

  6. I’m actually starting to believe it. And hear out my conspiracy..

Look at titles that TRULY use two ‘autonomous’ screens…none (hence why I’m excited for this new entry).
The closest to dual screen input is early on COD, streaming two different players on different screens, and then Splatoon with a similar control scheme to Star Fox BUT does not stream direct gameplay on the second screen.

If we dwell further we see that Sonic Boom had a similar set up to COD, but in a much more open world and not a sandbox like COD. AND THAT is proof that there’s issues when you have controller input with varying gameplay streams on the two screens.

…if there’s no delay again, this is nothing but fear mongering.

    1. Are you saying that, in the end of the day, it lacks processing power to the Wii U when it comes to such hard tasks like stream two complete different contents towards the TV and the gamepad…?

      Hummm, yeah, makes sense…

Little bit off-topic, but have you seen this thread on NeoGAF?

      http://goo.gl/pq0gD4

      1. No, they just still don’t know how to properly program for the U after all these years. I’m sure if it were more powerful it’d be easier, but no one has done this previously so there’s no way to pin it on only power.

No, and we all know it’s underpowered regardless of when in development they thought to nerf it vs the competition.

  7. {{Nintendo Tri-Force Hero Kokiri Kid adventurer}}

Wow. They better cancel it or delay and completely flip it cuz news like this is killing my hype for it.

Yep….. Hype is gone. I’m over it!
In fact I won’t buy another game on Wii U.
Wait… Poken tournament. That’s it tho. There is nothing coming I want. At one point I wanted star fox despite the N64 graphics. I could deal with it. Like a throwback. But now this, I can’t.

    1. I’m a Star Fox diehard fan, maybe that’s why my hype hasn’t gone. But, truth be told, Star Fox Zero is shaping up to be a huge letdown if they don’t somehow revamp it soon.

  8. Not surprising, given the reaction the game got at E3 in regards to the convoluted and overly complicated control scheme with the gamepad.
Oh hey guys, also remember that Project Guard and Project Giant Robot are still supposedly being worked on by Miyamoto! Sad.

    1. I’m not an insider, so all I heard are information people make available on the media. But… There are several stories telling that Miyamoto is the opressive boss nobody wants to have.

I don’t know if this has gotten more pronounced lately, but all his projects has been failing, like Project Guard, Giant Robot and Star Fox Zero.

Of course, Splatoon is here to prove the rumors wrong, but still. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

  9. Problems with the controls? HA! Do people realize this game was already finished and there was tons of gameplay of it last year? Did anyone complained about the controls? No. All I heard was bitching about the graphics, so when they delayed it I thought it was to improve the graphics and add more online stuff. I think since a lot of people have played this since E3, the control issue is just a fake rumour. If they delay it again it could be all about other thing, but looks fake, why Nintendo Of America has a say in this? I think Miyamoto wouldn’t put out a half asses project to be reviewed by Nintendo America, he would release it when it’s done when he wants to.

    1. Hum, already finished? How do you know?

Tons of gameplay? Where they were showed off?

The playable version of the game at last year’s E3 was quite short — as normally happens to all unreleased games. No developer intends to give the actual, final product to the audience before its final release, but, instead, they only want to tease the gaming community.

And, of course, needless to say no developer intends to have bad press towards their product giving the audience a broken part to be played.

No one said NoA, but NoE.

Finally, regular-basis revision processes are expected to happen during the development of any game. So it’s not a surprise NoE presumably had access to a beta version.

    2. Really? Because there was a good amount of commentary and reactions to the controls, and not in a good way. It’s not a “fake rumor”. It was a legitimate issue at E3 because Nintendo is forcing the gamepad experience into the gameplay instead of trying to make it fit naturally.

  10. People don’t be gullible this is the same person that said they had an announcement for a game that has not been announced.

  11. Why are people believing this guy? He’s not reliable at all. Stop letting him play you. People just love to eat up these negative Nintendo rumors all the time, and this dude along with Emily will say anything to get some attention.

Wait for official info, people. It wasn’t long ago that Star Fox Zero was reconfirmed for its April release.

Dont let another Fire Emblem Fates skinship ordeal happen… -_-

  12. They should just make a sequel to Star Fox Assault with more missions, online multiplayer and local multiplayer bots.

  13. Here we go again, our daily BS rumor. If you honestly think Miyamoto and Platinum are having trouble your a moron. Miyamoto has been making games for how long now? Platinum has a great record as well.

    1. ~*Let the shackles be released!*~ Chains of Lucifer X3 ~*Or fall forever!*~

Even professionals sometimes hit roadblocks. Miyamoto & Platinum Games are no exception.

      1. Are you talking about Godestiny, right? Because he seems clueless, indeed. I really would like to know how he thinks that GameXplain video can shed any light on Star Fox Zero playability.

~*Rumor or not, Nintendo needs to say something to either prove or disprove them. ESPECIALLY if said rumors are going to persist. When you don’t get official confirmation amidst dozens of rumors, sometimes they can get to some people even when those people don’t want them to. Keeping silent isn’t always the smart thing to do, Nintendo. Sometimes keeping silent can really screw you over in the long run.*~

    1. I spent some time at Nintendo Everything and Nintendo Life today, and it’s clear that several people who usually post at those websites are mad at Miyamoto, at the gyro controls, and at Nintendo which does not clarify sh*t.

      LOL!

      1. Can you honestly blame them? I don’t like the gyro controls either, and I don’t like the idea of taking my eyes off my 60″ HD flat screen to look at a four inch low res handheld. I love the Wii U, and think it’s an amazing console, but I’ve never been a fan of forcing a mechanic in a game. It seems to me that Miyamoto was asked if he could find a unique way to use the second screen, so he forced dual screen with gyro controls into his game. Horrible idea IMO. I just hope and pray there is an option to turn it off.

        1. Not only I don’t blame them, but I also endorse their opinion.

I’m 100% against gyro controls and whatever unorthodox mechanics for Star Fox.

It’s a shame Miyamoto is forcing that weird control scheme upon us. I’m all for shut down the gyro controls, the second screen and give us the classic way to play Star Fox.

Heck, Miyamoto himself said that it’s going to take us two days playing the damn game to get used to the controls… What a clown!

          1. Yea, no kidding. Does anybody actually like gyro controls? Seriously, everyone I know hates them, the entire internet hates them, yet Nintendo keeps incorporating them in their games… WTF… Three things in life I hate more than anything… My ex girlfriend, Cucumbers, and Gyro controls..

            1. Man… Ex-girlfriends are indeed a problem… >.<

Gyro controls should be banned forever, but we know how much Nintendo is stubborn…

Cucumbers are ok for my taste, though.

        2. ~*Let the shackles be released!*~ Chains of Lucifer X3 ~*Or fall forever!*~

I like using the Gamepad for maps, inventory, & game settings. Basically anything that involves going through an annoying ass menu where I have to scroll through things when a quick 1-second tap on a touch screen is less time consuming & less likely to break the game’s progression & immersion for me. But with features like these, I only want them if they aren’t forced. If it’s not optional, no thanks.

          1. Yea, for maps and inventory the gamepad is a dream. I loved it in Windwaker, and I’m sure I will love it in Twilight Princess. Also Arkham City on the Wii U is without a doubt the superior version simply because of the gamepad.

I think the small things the gamepad does in games like those are highly under appreciated. Everybody kept saying, “Nintendo cannot think of creative ways to use the gamepad”. And I was saying, “who the fuck cares this inventory screen is awsome!”
