GameStop Wants 50% Revenue To Come From Things Besides Games By 2017

GameStop knows that a digital future is coming hence why it has outlined that it wants 50% of its revenue to come from things besides game sales by 2017. I guess they will branch out more into the soft toys and tech business. We already know that they’re getting into the publishing business as Insomniac’s next game is being published by the US retailer. The company wants to achieve this ambitious goal by 2017.

Speaking with Gamasutra at an Insomniac Games media event in Burbank, Vice President of Internal Development and Diversification Mark Stanley states this effort furthers GameStop’s goals to reduce core game sales revenue to 50% of total revenue by 2017.

  1. Personally, I buy all my Wii U games on the eShop. This is a smart move for GameStop, and buying Think Geek definitely helped them in the long run.

  2. I'm just an Animal Crossing

They should sell more video game related merchandise, clothes, stickers, action figures, iPads , kindles and really they could be the next Best Buy. But start off smaller. Soon they could offer TVs and household appliances.

  3. Every time I hear about the future being all (or mostly all) digital, I think to myself “wow, I guess I really WON’T be a gamer forever like I thought I would”. Because seriously, a LOT of people want nothing to do with digital garbage. And a lot of people will stop gaming if it all goes digital. That’s like the one and only thing that can (and WILL) stop me from gaming. And for me to say that, it’s like saying I’m going to stop breathing. Because gaming has been my LIFE, ever since I was a kid playing the Atari 2600.

    1. If you go online, they have retro games for sale. The pricing isn’t bad, and there’s usually online deals too. However, “retro” doesn’t include PS2, and I’m guessing not GameCube either. At least not yet. Still, I picked up Mario Party 2 and Final Fantasy IX on there for much cheap.

  4. Good plan, since I never find anything video game related to buy there. The prices for new stuff is better at Walmart, the prices for used stuff is better on Kijiji and the selection of Amiibo and other TTL figures are better at Toys R Us. Hell, the reward program is better at my local pharmacy. I buy 2 new games there and my next order is $10 off. I buy 1,315 games at GameStop and I save $3 total.
