Nintendo Outlines The Company’s New Purpose

nintendo's company logo

Nintendo has revised its articles of incorporation which is basically an outline for the products it produces. The Kyoto based company is looking to branch out to medical and health services, computer software, eating establishments and IP licensing. It’s not clear how they plan on entering these domains, but the Quality of Life initiative comes to mind. No doubt we shall hear more about these plans during the annual shareholders meeting on June 29, 2016.

        1. Wow I didn’t know that a letter and number combination could tell you all you need to know about a person. Way to judge a book by the first 2 characters of its cover buddy. I’ll be sure to never ask you your opinion on another human being. Thanks.

      1. I’m not sure where it might have come from originally, but it’s something I picked up in my family. A couple of my brothers will use it when replying to a group text or something. Basically it’s a throwback to the N64 days when a lot of multiplayer games had P1 to P4 to designate players. It kind of stuck to me and now I like to designate when I’m one of the first 4 commenters. I know a lot of people will think it’s stupid, but hey screw ’em.

        1. Ah ok I was guessing that it stood for Player 2. I relate with this because I always prefer to be the second player in games, especially fighting games. I was always the black bomberman in Super Bomberman which was player 2 as well. I’ve always thought the second best was secretly the first best. ^^

        2. I'm just an Animal Crossing

          I thought it meant player 1,2,… That’s awesome! I like that. That’s cool man.

    1. … it’s a semi-sign. What I mean is this: if the NX doesn’t succeed and they don’t have another way to continue, then they can leave the gaming business altogether (or at least for the most part) without skipping a beat.

      Another way that this can be interpreted is this:

      Nintendo: “We’re going to build an escape shoot with a cushion just in case we don’t have any more use in the gaming industry anymore.”

      Of course, I hope I’m overreacting, but considering the fact that they went into other industries before they settled on video games until this day, this feels like this is the case.

      1. They’re too deep in the videogame industry to leave it on the dust just because of their home console division. They basically have a monopoly on dedicated portable gaming devices, it would be extremely idiotic to abandon that after restructuring the company to support it. Not to mention, games are what make their franchises appealing. Their plans about expanding their IPs is built entirely about that.

        Does that mean they won’t change their main field if, for example, their movies turn out to be a cash-cow the size of Marvel Studios? No, not really. However, it won’t happen over the course of a generation. I doubt it will ever happen at all, really.

        1. That makes sense. That’s why I said that if the NX doesn’t succeed AND they couldn’t find a way to continue (as in, they basically give up). It doesn’t mean that they’ll move on so quickly (they didn’t move on that quickly from their other industries and no company as large as Nintendo can really do that sort of thing as quickly as, say, a year, especially since it’s only now that they’re officially saying that they’re expanding). As for the portable division, they don’t seem to make enough for that part of the company to consistently put them into the black (also, sales of the 3DS have indeed fallen since early this year).

          In any case, I only said this based off of their history as well as the statement that Iwata said, which was if they feel like they could no longer continue with video games, then they’ll evolve into something else and leave. Mr. Kawashima certainly looks to be the kind of person that would more than likely pull that trigger. So I’m being very cautious here.

          Now, I’m more than happy to be proven wrong (as a matter of fact, I better damn well HOPE I’m wrong) and I know that most of the industry (and its fans, including us) wouldn’t want that to happen either (heck, I’m pretty sure Sony and Microsoft wouldn’t want it either), but if they do leave, I – at least – won’t be completely surprised.

          1. I’m really curious about what would happen to Playstation and Xbox, not to mention video games in general if Nintendo were to completely exit video games. I know that a lot of Sony and Microsoft fans don’t really care about Nintendo, but I have to imagine there would be some lasting effect on the community.

            1. I’m pretty sure that the companies themselves will be very disappointed and upset. As for the consoles themselves, I think they’ll either evolve into something that’s non-physical or at least the physical objects would be something like the Chromecast. (And it’s already sort of happening with PlayStation Now and Microsoft’s deep integration with Windows 10. In fact, this makes even more sense to Microsoft since I know that they want to compete against the Apple TV, so getting rid of all that power for something as powerful as an iPhone 6 (which the Apple TV’s power is equal to) in addition to streaming capabilities in order to play AAA games would be something that would make sense to Microsoft, since they’re more into a “Cloud-first, services-first” vision for the company.)

              Really, I think that Nintendo doesn’t want to deal with streaming services (I know they’ve said that they didn’t really consider something like Twitch to be a fun experience (even though they have an active Twitch account, so that statement is inconsistent, but whatever)), so they’ll more than likely stick with what we’re seeing and I think that this should be enough for either companies to not complete let go of that physical aspect of the console industry. This means that if Nintendo ends up doing the (hopefully) unlikely decision to leave, Microsoft and Sony would probably have (not much) of a reason to leave.

              This is all speculation on my part, though, so we’ll see.

              1. Were Nintendo to leave, I’d be most worried about innovation in video games. Nintendo is currently THE innovator. Sony, as far as I’m concerned has no innovation whatsoever. They have VR coming soon, but that was really just a response to the Oculus Rift. Playstation Move was a response to the Wii and even their handhelds are just a lazy attempt to compete with Nintendo’s. Microsoft meanwhile seems to be going for the all-in-one entertainment package, making Xbox a general entertainment system rather than just a video game console. The Hololens looks pretty cool, but at this point it seems like it’ll interact more with computing than video games.

                If Nintendo dropped out today, I feel like the other two would continue to make bigger, more powerful systems. But without any “new” ideas, they would fail to attract new generations of gamers.

                As you said previously said this all conjecture, but if you think about it, of the big 3, Nintendo is currently the one most equipped to attract the next generation of gamers.

      2. That’s kind of how I viewed it. But I certainly don’t see the NX as their last chance. I get the sense that they want to branch out to further stabilize the company while, at the same time, bring in more cash to support their main business (video games) and create something to fall back on just in case their home console division ever did fall flat. But even if they do someday pull out of the home console business, they won’t pull out entirely. They still dominate the handheld business, and they just opened up a world of possibilities with mobile.

      3. Nintendo is just expanding their business like most companies do. It is nothing new. They trying to make nintendo like profits again.

  1. This is good. It means they’ve noticed there is not enough room for growth as long as they keep limiting their business to basically two pieces of hardware and their respective software. If they manage to branch out effectively, it will only make the company more stable, even if they’re not seeing massive profits from every area. “Computer software” sounds particularly intriguing. Same with “IP licensing”.

    As long as they don’t lose focus on their original domain, this can only be a good thing.

    1. For as long as Nintendo has been a company, I’m surprise they havent expanded already….

      What kind of background do they have, mostly video games and toys….

      Look at Microsoft and Sony, Nintendos biggest competitors, and they are all into different kinds of tech and everyday items and brands….

      With billions of [Money] anybody or company should expand their selves, that’s the whole point of making money, and hopefully with the morals of Nintendo, they can enhance a generation with family, friend, user oriented everyday items and brands that brings quality to our lives and the generation after…

      Now all we have to do is wait and see if they live up to the challenge they brought upon themselves….

      Good Luck…

      1. They have expanded before, actually. They started out as a card making company, then they expanded (and soon exited) out of a bunch of other industries before they settled on video games. Right now (at least, until their next fiscal quarter), they’re only into the trading card and video game business (if they’re in any others, then I don’t know what it is). So actually, this is more or less the perfect time and it’s not like they’ve stayed in one or two industries for over 120 years.

        In any case, I’m certainly excited (cautiously, anyway) to see what happens next.

        1. Yeah like the milk bar in a link between worlds! And they could have several demos set up for various Zelda games. Man we have all the cool ideas. Nintendo! Makes this happen!!

  2. Eating establishments, as in we’ll see Nintendo restaurants outside of the upcoming theme part?

      1. Actually, you’re right. They already have one in Tokyo as of now. But that is The Pokemon Company’s work.

  3. OMG, Nintendo is trying to take over the world and enslave us!
    Think about it!

    They are going to give us medical treatment that makes us also addicted to Nintendo.
    There will be food services, with special chemicals that will make us addicted to Nintendo.
    They will hack the net, to brainwash us to be addicted to Nintendo.

    All I can say is, very smart move. All Hail Nintendo!

        1. Maybe you could do with a little bit of light, Quadraxis? It might help your outlook a slight bit. Let me call up Samus & see if she still has access to the Luminoth weaponry.

  4. Sounds cool.

    Some strange things already in their articles of incorporation:

    manufacturing and sale of…sporting equipment, sound equipment and vehicles;
    manufacturing and sale of office equipment;
    manufacturing and sale of education materials, child care products…;
    radio broadcast and development and sale of radio-related technology;
    non-life insurance agency and life insurance offering.

    Also the “eating establishment” language just replaces what previously said “restaurants. dining halls, cafes” so not really new.

  5. Eating establishments? So our NX WILL be able to prepare food for us? Sweet! If it becomes useless as a video game system, I can use it for my food instead. NX will save Nintendo from their rut since I can make some awesome pizza with it! Yay! lol

  7. Personally, I like the idea of Nintendo branded hospital equipment in the pediatrics ward.
    As for the eating establishments, I’d eat the Super Mario Mushroom Cheeseburger with a side of Shy Guy’s Fries.

  8. Medical and health departments, we kinda knew about already when they announced a QOL initiative way back when. IP licensing, okay, good, branch out so not just gamers can enjoy them (Legend of Zelda movie, Splatoon cartoon, etc.).

    Eating establishments…?

    Well THAT came out of nowhere. I want more details on that, honestly.

  9. I honestly cant see Nintendo leaving the video game market, and I think that this isn’t really worth worrying about too much. Especially since Nintendo has a history that goes back to long before video games. I think Konami is another company that makes more than just video games as well… so Nintendo wouldn’t be the first game developer to do this… plus companies like Sony and Microsoft are responsible for a great deal more than just video games. So yeah, I don’t think this is a big deal.

    Though, I do see that Nintendo has to reinvent itself a bit to adapt to today’s society and interests, but I don’t think I could ever see Nintendo bailing on all they have established as a game developer.

    The biggest change, the way I’m perceiving this, would probably be years down the road if the NX is deemed a failure. Even if Nintendo decided that ceasing to produce consoles was their next step, they would still release games on mobile (despite how much I hate mobile games =_= ) and even license their titles to be released on other consoles like PlayStation or PC. I only hope, if it EVER came to this scenario, that Nintendo would keep making involved, long-lasting, console game experiences on devices that can handle more than simple casual experiences. Of course, this is only if Nintendo did poorly in the coming years, and even then, if they would actually come to the conclusion of leaving the console market.

    Who knows if that would ever happen of course, but even if it was a possibility, it wouldn’t be anything that would happen for a few years at the very least… Who knows, the NX could completely reinvent the console market, and have potential to be a massive success. All we can do, for now, is wait and see.

    They better not leaving the gaming market. But this just sounds like they’re trying to become somewhat of a conglomerate. Adding on medical services, computer software and eating establishments to their gaming company good be a very beneficial thing for them.
