Nintendo’s VP of Sales Says That Zelda: Breath of the Wild Will Be An Immediate Reason Fans Will Buy The NX

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been one of the most talked about titles at E3 this week, it’s the title that fans have been waiting to get a glimpse of, and finally did get the chance to through the live footage of the game on the Nintendo Treehouse E3 stream.

The Financial Post managed to speak with Nintendo’s Executive Vice-President of Sales, Scott Moffitt, to speak about the new title and find out why it was the company’s primary focus at the event this week. The publication asked Moffitt if the reduced software showcase was indicative of the “looming transition into the new hardware”:

“The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a game that deserves this level of focus. You’re right, it is our primary game we’re showing this year, and it’s just spectacular. For a game that immense and exciting we thought it deserved this sort of stage, and, frankly, this level of focus” Moffitt replied.

The Financial Post also asked Moffitt about what he feels the company has learned looking back at the sales of both the Wii U and 3DS that they can apply to this generation:

“First, it’s really important to have the right content. Software drives hardware. We’ve proven that multiple times.” Moffitt said, “the right game can really lift a system. With The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild being among the titles we’re working on for NX, we’re very excited it will be an immediate reason game fans will want to buy the hardware.”

  1. I want to get mad at him, but honestly I can’t. It’s the truth. I’ll be buying the NX just for BotW.

      1. Yeah, I agree. Can’t live without their games. But lately I’ve been noticing how much of a difference third party support makes. I wanted so much to buy a Wii U (and upgrade my PC, but I can’t rn), but I skipped it because all the new hottest games were in PS4 and it’s getting hard to support 3 platforms here.

But by having the Game of All Time that is BOTW? No question.

  2. I’m looking forward to NX, but I likely won’t be getting BotW for it.

I typically get games for their originally intended console, hence why I stuck with TP on the GCN instead of the Wii.

Not to mention that I’ll be getting BotW day one, but I won’t be getting an NX immediately.

        1. Why have a game thats fun when you can have the best graphics aswell. Zelda only deserves the best in my opinion ,so do all the other nintendo games. its kind of like saying lord of the rings could have used cgi only instead of all the beautifull handmade armor and weapons and set pieces. (wich made it a masterpiece)

        2. Honestly, there isn’t really anything wrong with another person liking graphics over gameplay.
That’s almost like judging a person that chooses to buy cars only for horsepower over cars with better gas mileage.
Regardless of how silly their decisions sound to you, everyone has their own personal preference when it comes to two different things.
No one should ever get upset at another person just because they like the opposite of what you like.

          1. Yes there is, first of all the example you gave about buying a car is not a good one, people buy cars with better gas mileage because it saves them money, and purchasing a car is a necessity for most.

A better example would be movies, people like loud movies with great graphics and no plot(see Micheal bay films) but others like films with a great story that captivates and stirs emotion. Guess which one is more difficult to produce? Thr second odviously because its easier to make fluff than make thought provoking movies. So what happens? The film industry gets flooded with similar films because the masses go see them.

Now what’s happening with the video game industry? Most are worried about “graphics” and video game developers are taking note, making it the focus of their industry (see Xbox Scorpio announcement) The current gaming culture saddens me because it seems like they don’t care about experiencing new worlds, great stories, artstyles or ideas, they only care about specs. And this hurts the ones who want to keep seeing developers coming out with original content that might not coincide with “photo realistic” graphics.

      1. Yup. Aonuma even said he always intended it for NX too (google it).

Probably they started development on a good PC and downscaled to the Wii U.

    1. Considering Twilight Princess was actually best on GCN, you made the right call. But this time is different. Breath of the Wild will hopefully be more superior on the next console.

    2. BUT… getting it on Wii U could be the right call, too. Won’t know for sure til we get more concrete info on NX from Nintendo themselves.

  3. No, Nintendo. I no longer believe in your colorful outcomes. This always happens when you are about to release something new on the market or wants to damage control.

I bought Wii U day one, and I regret immensely.

    1. So because they had a crappy launch for the Wii U, they can’t learn from their mistake? I understand how you feel because…well…Nintendo. All I’m saying is we’ll have to wait and see. Zelda: BotW, which will also be an NX launch, is already showing promise in terms of listening to fans. Perhaps this game is an indicator of Nintendo changing for the better.

      1. I want Nintendo to change for the better, too. From the bottom of my heart. But I have gotten so frustrated already…

        1. I get ya. By the way, having play Double Dash and Meee recently, those games actually have life to them. It’s hard to explain, but the new Mario Kart and Smash feel factory processed. Melee and Double Dash have this charm and physics that scream Nintendo. Those games have a silly Nintendo vibe to them. I think the whole reason is that they actually experimented with new ideas and actually showed their true Nintendo colours. They’re playing it too safe nowadays. The new Zelda, however, is showing signs of actually starting to take risks again, and changing the old formula almost completely.

    1. True that. Mario U and Nintendo Land were good for what they were, but nowhere near the Caliber of a Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros U or Mario Maker. I mainly use my Wii U to watch YouTube. Through the Internet Browser, there are No Problems.

  4. Uhh, I won’t be getting NX for BotW. If they want me to get NX, it needs 3 things:

    Mario Galaxy 3, Spla2n, and a new F-ZERO.

I will stick to Wii U for BotW, thank you very much.

  5. It’s a nice sentiment, but after the half ass way software was handled for the Wii U there is no way the NX will be a day one purchase for me. I’ll wait a year and see how the library is expanding, both from Nintendo and from 3rd parties. So BotW will be a Wii U purchase for me.

  6. No, because it is identical to the Wii U version and a Wii U will probably cost less than the NX and already has a fraction of a game library. After the Wii U disappointment people will be reluctant to buy a new Nintendo console day 1.

  7. I read the full interview and third parties came up and Nintendo said something i find very interesting. So they were asked about the lack of 3rd party Wii U games and if they are working to fix that with the NX, and they actually said that as something they put a lot of thought into and then they said this “Having said that, what will attract even more partners to our platform — which, of course, is something we’d like to do — is having a piece of hardware that provides interesting ways for these companies to bring their game creations to life, one that’s easy to program and work on, and that has a large enough install base of game fans that are looking for a variety of content.” And the most important thing is that Nintendo actively realizes that for 3rd party support they need to make a system that is “easy to program and work on” i found this very interesting.

    1. In spite of what that *expletive, expletive* Reggie said, this gives me slight hope for NX. Ugh! Now they are just fucking teasing us at this point with saying little tidbits, both positive & negative, about the NX while planning on not showing us anything on it til later in the year!

      1. I suspect they will show it off in September. I had already thought it this, and then NoC said that it would be revealed in the fall, so that kinda backs me up. It shouldn’t be too long.

  8. As good as the new Zelda might be, I still stand by what I said. The NX won’t be a day one purchase. I’ll get it eventually, but there’s no telling when. I’ll sit back and see how it goes.
