Zelda: Breath of the Wild Was Originally Delayed Due To Difficulties With Physics Engine

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been a long time coming. From its initial showing back in E3 2014 with trailer and gameplay features, fans believed it would be hitting the Wii U in late 2015. But when that date passed and the delays got a little lengthier, speculative theories suggested it was the development on Nintendo’s next console, the NX, which led to the game’s problematic release.

According to Shigeru Miyamoto during an interview with IGN, Breath of the Wild was actually delayed due to difficulties with the physics engine. It’s unsurprising after seeing the gameplay shown at E3 for the Wii U version which lets Link forage, jump, climb and scale over rocks freely within Hyrule. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is due for release on both the Wii U and NX at some point in 2017.

“It’s complicated because as we’re developing this — obviously development of NX started a while ago — and unfortunately, I’m sorry, but the development of this game took a lot longer than expected. We really felt like we would be able to get it done last year, but there was a lot of struggle with using the physics engine, so that’s why it took a long time.” – Shigeru Miyamoto

  1. I still feel like Miyamoto is everyone’s best friend, and I can’t help but say:
    Hey Miyamoto, it’s okay buddy!

    Who can ignore that smile?

  2. i would have been more upset if the reason it was delayed is because of nx but nope, difficulty with the physics engine is an excuse no one should be upset over. now i can wait patiently and play some of the games coming out this year to hold me over and i have other games i can play and they dont need to be wii u or 3ds games, i have some lengthy pc games that will hold me over. anyways i have respect for miyamoto even if he makes bad games (that doesnt mean i like those or have to like those bad games to just to have respect).

        1. Well, in the VGA gameplay from 2014, you could see some obvious clipping with the cape through the shield, and some other minor things. Seeing the polished physics now, I’m not surprised that the game is taking a while to finish.

        1. This comment is BS. The delay out of THIS year is certainly possible for it to be ready for NX, but Miyamoto isn’t talking about this year’s delay, he’s talking about last year’s delay. It wouldn’t have been a problem if the game launched in 2015 as they originally said, because that’d be a lot further off from NX. Once it got delayed into 2016, though, then they were like “well, ok, we should probably just release it on both at this point.”

Haven’t you SEEN the physics engine? Its insane, and there’s still noticeable framerate drops a few people have noticed. Its entirely believable that they had trouble getting the game ready in time for its 2015 launch. (at this point, though, it looks like the framerate issues should easily be cleared up by the end of the year, so yeah, next year’s delay is likely just for NX).

          1. I see someone hasn’t been around hearing all of Nintendo’s bullshit excuses & damage control this gen. I saw this excuse coming a mile away to protect the dying Wii U. But part of me understands. I wouldn’t want to believe Nintendo fucked up with Wii U, either, but I’ve wised up to their bullshit a year ago. If it is indeed the physics, though, it just shows how pathetic the Wii U really is. Probably having a hard time getting it to work on Wii U like dozens of 3rd parties had trouble getting some of the games they put on Wii U to work. But that’s what happens when you try to put high tech games on a low tech console. Koei Tecmo & Sakurai learned this the hard way when they tried to put games meant for Wii U on the 3DS.

            1. I agree, and it also makes sense as a company for them to have a very big and solid title as an NX launch. This is obviously a lesson learned from Wii U’s launch of weaker games (I don’t hate Nintendo Land like many tend to). Seriously, even if this game was launching 2015, why wouldn’t they wait to launch it with the NX? I’m not complaining though, I would’ve wished they launched an NX version if they didn’t.

      1. I see they are having Miyamoto make the excuses this time instead of Reggie. As if his reputation isn’t bad enough as it is these days.

      2. Do you think they’re going to base the next zelda on this games physics since they’ve been building this game up for so long? Or maybe even the next game is basically going to be glorified dlc? I’m just spitballing ideas

      3. I like how some of you just assume it’s an excuse. I’m pretty sure none of you were part of the dev team for this game. You have no idea what problems may have occurred. Stop acting like a bitch. If they delayed the game due to issues or for the NX you don’t know. From what i’ve heard the demo had quite a few fps issues and some of the textures were unpolished. It obviously isn’t in its final form. And even still, this game is huge so its very understandable that it’d take longer. I don’t know exactly when this game started development but if it was right after SS released thats 5 years of dev for a 2017 release. in comparison, COD has 3 yrs. which game do you think is more demanding

      4. My source says that Zelda (and the NX) is done and would have been ready for fall 2016 as a launch title. The reason they delayed was to polish the Wii U version which has been a nightmare to get looking like it is. The version people saw at E3 was absolutely the Wii U version because he says the difference between the two versions is like Uncharted 3 versus 4.

Expect to see NX footage of BOW this fall during the NX reveal. You’ll be blown away by how gorgeous it is. He honestly believes this will be the very best game Nintendo has ever made and so good that the NX could enjoy wii type hype and success. He will not tell me if just console/handheld/hybrid because he doesn’t know. Another interesting thing was that Metroid has been in development since 2011, even before Zelda. Will be a fall 2017 release. He’s only seen screenshots and says Metroid fans are going to lose their shit (in a good way) when it’s revealed next E3.

        ||All the difficulties experienced…on the Wii U…will be absent on the NX…which means total Nintendomintion…||

      6. A)Just cause he said that’s the reason doesn’t mean it’s true. They aren’t going to admit they delayed for NX if it is true or not.
B)Trouble with physics engine? Due to lack of knowledge in the area, or due to the wii u being a weak system due to the gamepad which has plagued many games from living to their true potential?
