US gaming publication Game Informer has run a lengthy interview with long-time series producer, director and composer Junichi Masuda. There’s a wealth of content to be learnt from the interview but one of the highlight questions was whether Pokémon Sun & Moon would be the last Pokémon game for the Nintendo 3DS with the Nintendo NX expected to launch in March 2017. Here’s what he had to say about this.
With the NX looming next year and whatever that could mean for handheld Nintendo consoles, will Sun and Moon be the last Pokémon games for 3DS?
Junichi Masuda: When it comes to the main series, thinking of Pokémon RPGs that we develop at Game Freak, we always really considered the timing of when we released them. There has to be a certain point where we’re able to release the games and get them into the hands of enough people, to make sure the audience is big enough. This year, with Pokémon Sun and Moon, obviously we’re going to be starting to think about the next title, and then depending on what that timing is, I think that will determine which we platform we would release it on.

P1. Translation: “That’s a stupid question with an obvious answer.”
Well there’s probably going to be a 3rd version so it will be on 3DS
Pokémon Earth? Jupiter? Supernova?
And X & Y didn’t get a 3rd version.
Theoretically, and I emphasize “theoretically,” the third pokemon 7th gen game to come out would be Pokémon Eclipse
Beat me to it.
I thought of that too xD! It would be cool if they did what they did with BLK/ WHT and made a 2nd game for each… Sun and Moon would be, Solar Eclipse and Lunar Eclipse.
But literally every gen, fans speculated the 3rd version… Like PKMN Copper, PKMN Grey, PKMN Z…. then the company was like, “feck yew guys, we do wut we want!”
That’s actually a pretty nice idea
Pokemon Eclipse would be the obvious choice in my mind.
Once in a while I still pray that they’ll make Z.
Pokemon Star? Pokemon Galaxy?
True but it was only once!
Diamond Pearl remakes only on NX, please.
There’s already been an article that said that Pokemon main series games, which includes remakes, will only be on handheld/portable devices. While NX is speculated to be a handheld-home console hybrid, I think they’re looking at it more as a home console, and it will take a while to determine whether they will include games meant to be handheld such as the Pokemon games on it.
Hell yeah.
It better be.
After seeing the leak and the limited about of new Pokemon, along with the last time they pulled this stunt, the ambitious transition to 3D models (rather than easier to work with sprites), and the Ice Climbers being cut from the handheld port of SSB4 (which the Wii U version HAD TO correspond with), I’m pretty much fed up with the 3DS and its limitations, where the Pokemon roster suffered because of it. It has to end before Gen 8 ever becomes a thing.
we aren’t even at gen 7 yet christ man it’s just fucking pokemon! It’s not THAT important grow up man.
No one asked you.
And technically, this IS Gen 7.
your being impatient just wait it’s not gonna kill ya stop being a weiney little Autistic baby!
Do you enjoy being a douche?
Fucking love ripping on you Autistic Poke fags it amuses me
Yeah just as I thought this will be the last Pokemon game on the 3DS port because they are getting ready for the NX Pokemon title.
My friend Justin says that games are going to be for the new 3DS and not the 2DS and 3DS, is this true? I don’t want to give up my 2DS.
No. You’ll be able to play these on a 2DS or 3DS
I am really looking forward to Pokemon Sun! :-)
he’s an idiot. Except for Xenoblade, all retail 3DS games play on the entire 3DS family
Hey, don’t call his friend Justin an idiot. He’s just misinformed.
Thank god. I want Pokemon to play on my 2DS.
We need Gold and Silver on the 3DS VC next, and then remakes of Diamond and Pearl (?)
where the hell my fucking yellow remake youz sons of bitches!!!!!!
It’s not in Masuda’s hands to decide this; if Nintendo makes another handheld in the next year or two then whatever GameFreak is planning for the 8th generation will be moved to it, if Nintendo doesn’t then they’re stuck with the 3DS.
There doesn’t need to be a third version in every single Pokemon generation that gets made.
Gen 5 and Gen 6 did fine without it, and i’m sure Sun and Moon will as well.
