Sakurai Reconfirms That He Is Working On a New Project

Legendary developer Masahiro Sakurai who is behind the Super Smash Bros franchise has reconfirmed that he is working on a brand new project which one can only assume is for the upcoming Nintendo Switch platform. Details regarding this new project are virtually nonexistent but it is certainly exciting nonetheless.

      1. Yes. Ice Climbers. So if he is in charge of the next Smash, he can’t use the bullshit excuse that they are irrelevant today to cover up the fact the 3DS couldn’t handle them. But since the next new Smash will be on Switch, I hopefully suspect weak hardware won’t be an issue.

          1. 8-player Smash wasn’t an issue, or else Sakurai would’ve said so. What Sakurai did say was that they worked perfectly fine on the Wii U. The 3DS was the issue (SSB on the 3DS IS an issue).

  1. He did mention that last year after iwata died that he was planning a new project that he is working on. You know I’m just hoping that Sakurai can make a better project because I don’t think it will be smash bros. It might be something else. Besides he is the creator of Kirby.

    1. I believe Sakurai stopped directing Kirby games for a long time (since Air Ride IIRC). HAL Labs have been taking care of the franchise themselves to this day.

A new IP from him would be good.

  2. Yeah yeah, sakurai is the man behind the ssb franchise…but in reality ssb is what it is nowadays thanks to Iwata, he saved both the original game and melee, check the did you know gaming video about Satori Iwata.

By the way if sakurai is that legendary, why the only ones who contract him since he went independent is Nintendo?

  3. I would loooove to see another Kid Icarus game, with the same awesome voice cast and please bring back Hades! Hades and Magnus are the two characters I would love to see return to a sequel. Even though Pit killed Hades in the game, the dude is the freakin god of death. I imagine he can cheat death pretty easily.

      1. I’m pretty sure I missed it since who would know you’d have to wait 5 whole minutes for something special to happen after the credits. I was in such a hurry to be over & done with that horribly controlled game that I doubt I had the patience for that shit.

        1. If you don’t want to go through the final boss again, I’m sure it’s on YouTube somewhere. Probably like Kid Icarus Credits Easter Egg or something. Take a look/listen, it’s also kind of funny in addition to dropping a possible clue.

          1. Even if I didn’t mind rushing through the boss fight, it’s too late as I got rid of the game after I beat it which was roughly around the same time it released. But if I ever feel like knowing, I’ll be sure to check with youtube.

  4. I know he said he didn’t plan on it, but I’d love to see another Kid Icarus. I had hoped Nintendo would take the concept and build on it but they’ve done nothing since Uprising released.

So really, it feels like Sakurai is the only hope for Kid Icarus fans.

  5. A new, BETTER Kid Icarus game that doesn’t rely on the fucking stylus for nearly everything would be nice! I’d love to see what he’d do with a new Ice Climbers game, too! I guess a brand new IP wouldn’t be such a bad idea, either.

  6. It’s funny how everyone here is like “Omg new Smash Bros. or Kid Icarus!!!!” Yes new iterations and sequels are nice but this is exactly why he left HAL Laboratory. Sakurai enjoys creating original ideas more than anything.

  7. I feel SO bad for this man. He spent years of his life making Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS trying to make people happy. It really did a number on his health, so much that he said that he was considering that game be his last smash bros game. And ALL he gets is “Oh My God there is NO excuse why ICE CLIMBERS aren’t in this game. What the hell, Sakurai!?” He barely gets a thank you. Everyone is focused on the downsides of his work and is unhappy with what he’s already given us. If Ice Climbers aren’t in Smash for NS, So What? If he’s not working on Smash Bros for NS? Great. He’s probably working on something that will turn out to be great. Be a little more thankful, y’all.

    1. I don’t. He did it to himself by trying to do most of the work himself instead of, ya know, relying on his damn team for help & to take some of the load off when he can’t do it himself because of an injury. Yeah. I’ll give him props for working while dealing with an injury but I’ll also call him out for being a prideful idiot for doing so. Maybe if he relied on his team more, maybe he could have actually given us Ice Climbers down the road as, at least, a DLC character if not a character on the base game. I can’t feel too much pity for an idiot that does it to himself. Exactly why I didn’t feel sorry for that idiot that fell off of a cliff because he was too busy playing Pokemon GO instead of watching where he was walking. You reap what you sow.

      1. But really, he only did that so that fans would be happy. It’s people with this kind of mindset that makes it less likely that more smash bros games will be made in the future. If you’re ungrateful for what you’ve been given, there’s less motivation to do more.

        1. I’m not ungrateful for what he did do but that doesn’t mean I have to give him a pass for the shit I didn’t like, either.

        2. If he can’t handle the fact people aren’t gonna be 100% satisfied with a product, oh well. Such is life since you can’t please everyone. As for Smash itself, who cares if Sakurai doesn’t come back? He can be replaced. In fact, he will be replaced if Nintendo wants another Smash game & he refuses to come back. After all, they replaced him when he left the Kirby franchise.

      2. I think you are being way too harsh, man. I am sure there was a reason for the exclusion of the Ice Climbers. And calling him an idiot is really not fair. He is the director and he tries his best to make sure everyone gets what they want. And I can say that without a doubt, he’s done a better job than any of us would have. Obviously, everyone’s not going to get their favorite characters in the game. Don’t forget about how Sakurai himself feels too. Making Smash Bros on the Wii U AND the 3DS (which is an ENTIRELY different version by itself) with its 50+ character roster is already enough work as it is. He essentially helped make two games. And they both managed to get put out in the same year. I too was upset about some of the decisions, but I put aside my hate and have come to appreciate what he has done. This (4th generation) Smash Bros has achieved a lot that we should really be grateful for. It’s the first Smash fully playable on Nintendo’s handhelds. It is the first High-Definition game due to Nintendo’s console. It has more characters than any previous Smash and it’s also the first to get all these DLC characters and stages. He really could have just postponed his work due to his arm. And you know what? That would really not bode well with the fans. Who knows when it would’ve came out if we waited on this guy’s arm to heal? After all that’s happened and what he had to do to give us these games, if the only thing we can do is complain about how certain things didn’t make the cut, then Sakurai should honestly not waste any more time with another game if we aren’t pleased no matter what he does.

        1. *points to what I told koshua after his second comment* I’m not ungrateful & I’m thankful for what he did but that doesn’t mean I have to give him a pass for the shit I didn’t like because he was dumb enough to not rely on his team. If the little bitch doesn’t like it, Sakurai can just go & let someone else take over. Not my fault he listened to his pride like a fool and didn’t let his team take over while he was injured. Does he want a reward for being a work hog that didn’t rely on his team that was there for just such a reason as an injured arm!? Let me go check into my bag of fucks to give. *checks & finds it empty* Zero fucks there! Am I being harsh? Yes. Yes I am. But only because I believed in his ability to make it fucking work. And sure people would have been mad that he put the development on hold but least he wouldn’t have put his health in jeopardy. And some people, if not most, would have gotten over it eventually when he finally did finish it & gave us the best game possible while he was at his very best doing so.

      3. I agree woth you (again), the world is going to end i guess.
I find Sakurai to be an egocentric guy, he only ackanowledges important people in the industry (Kojima), he barely recognizes his team and the funniest part is that if it weren’t because of Iwata, he’d be begging for job.
