Reggie Explains Why Nintendo Switch Won’t Have A Bundled Game

One of the interesting things about the Nintendo Switch is that it doesn’t come with a bundled game to showcase the hardware. There are games like 1-2 Switch that do a good job of demonstrating it, but sadly it’s only available as a separate purchase. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has explained to GameSpot exactly why this is.

“We look at every launch uniquely as to what’s the right thing to do for that launch. And I’ve been involved in launches dating back to the Nintendo DS. Each one is a little different. For this launch, what we found is that with the range of software that’s coming–not only available day one but through April and into the summer, and including the holiday timeframe with Super Mario Odyssey–that we wanted to enable the consumer to buy the software they want, to look to get to the most approachable price point we could get to. That led us to a $299 price point, and let the consumer decide what games they want to buy.”

  1. Reggie Fils-Aime…
    How dare you!…
Show the fans within the Nintendo of America umbrella some respect and not treat them like they are clueless dumbasses…
Until then.. Shut the fuck up Reggie!!!!

    1. I easily would have spent 500 bucks for a Switch Masters Edition Bundle and additional pro controller….i mean if its 300 bucks and ive got the pre order for around 150 and a pro controller is what? 70 bucks? so yeah im payin about 500 anyway but it would be cool to have a bitchin Zelda themed console. sure we got 3ds’ and the windwaker Wiiu (pffffffffffff) but if Picachu can have his own 64 and Nathan Drake gets a PS4 than surely Link and Zelda could get console. They’re system sellers.

  2. Depends on who says what. The lack of a bundle hurts buyers, but the suggested launch price is just about fair. Those of us expecting sub $250 were kidding themselves.

    1. Blame Ontario and the liberals for bleeding the country dry aswell as the NDP destroying Alberta. The Canadian Dollar is in the shitter and won’t recover anytime soon.

Sometimes I don’t think he can be read. Why? Because I think he just says things without thinking. @.@

  3. $399 Cdn with no game is ridiculous! No need to rush out to get that with the 5 launch games and expensive accessories! It’ll be interesting to see how this launch turns out.

I’ve been a Nintendo fan since 1982 but this is ludicrous! What are they thinking?

    1. That has nothing to do with Nintendo that is the Canadian Dollar being garbage. Liberal run Ontario has been pilling massive debt on for the last 14 years and it finally hit the fan in 2015, since then the dollar quickly slipped back to pre 2006 levels.

  4. 1-2 Switch it’s something THAT NEED TO BE BUNDLED!! Casual consumers will be back on board with that. =/ But that’s the Nintendo i hate, when they do worst decisions. There’s not even a Breath of the Wild Bundle with all the Master Edition included for $400. =/ or some TLOZ theme on Switch… stupid Nintendo, they don’t see good opportunities.

  5. I’m starting to feel all sorts of uncomfortable and uneasy feelings about everything I’ve heard and seen so far. It’s a roller coaster of emotions for sure. I find my self applauding one moment then furiously cursing them the next moment. Been playing Nintendo games since 1985 and this is all too familiar. Nintendo shoots themselves in the foot all the time. 1-2 switch should be a pack in no doubt. How can they justify $50 for that game. I was pumped to hear about the online voice chat but wait…I need a smart phone to make it work?? WTF? The irony and infuriating part about this is any time I wanted to enjoy an online game on my wiiu like MK or splatoon I used my phone to call my cousin and kept it one during our session. So what’s the bloody point? It’s the same god damn thing all over again. You mean I can’t chat or send a game invite without a smart device? Who is responsible for this ridiculous garbage of a decision? I wanted Zelda for the switch but now it might just become my wiiu/Nintendo swan song and I might move onto greener pastures. I’m sick of this shit.

    1. I completely agree. I found the presentation itself to be alright, it wasn’t the worst, but it certainly wasn’t the greatest either. Had a few highlights, but I felt it was somewhat lacking, considering it was the first big official reveal for a brand new console. But it feels like with every hour passing, there’s more and more bad news rolling in, some of which you have already mentioned. Strange and unreasonable smart device involvement for online features that normally should be a part of the console in this day and age (they still can’t manage to deliver what the competition has been doing for 11 years now?), disappointing decisions regarding the online subscription (only one NES/SNES game per month that you can’t even keep after the month passes? Again, are they completely unaware of today’s standards the competition has set years ago?), overpriced controllers, very lackluster launch lineup. Just like you, I won’t be getting it at launch, and pick up Zelda for the WiiU instead. The earliest I’ll consider getting the Switch is during the holiday season when Mario launches, and that’s only when there will be more exciting games on the horizon. E3 is probably going to determine if the Switch will be a 2017 purchase for me or nah.

      1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

        ||Logically that’s exactly what High Command is expecting, for most to buy the Switch at holiday season which is why the online payments are held off until then and the lackluster launch line-up…||

        ||This is also a reason to why they are only shipping limited supplies of the Switch at launch…||

        ||Overall, the biggest and only real problem the Switch has is the price…||

        1. Not too sure about that. If they were expecting most people to buy it during the holiday season, that’s when they would launch it. I personally believe the Switch would have had much better chances if that was the case, considering by the time we’re in the holiday season, E3 will have passed already, which means we would have even more games to look forward to, in addition to way more games being ready at launch, avoiding the lackluster launch line-up we’re getting now, with a march launch.
The online services turning into a paid service late in the year is probably because we won’t really have any online games until then, or will we? I can only think of Mario Kart, but I’m sure people would get pretty mad if Nintendo asked for money for that, considering it’s free on WiiU and all. Splatoon is set for a summer launch, but that might as well mean end of summer, which would be close to the paid service going live, as that’s in autumn.

          1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

            ||Well at its current state it’s very difficult to calculate anything with much certainty…||

            ||The illogical lack of Ubisian presense so far has been disrupting, those 80 weapons High Command were talking about better be for this year mostly…||

            ||Maybe they have switched the disappointment schedule as well, disappoint now but redeem later unlike the Wii U…||

        2. Yea, I think your right. I think the launch in March is more than that even. They want to be able to see consumer reaction and actual sales data. If the launch goes poorly they have E3 and all the way to the holiday season to fix it. If sales are bad enough, they may even have a price drop and bundle games with the system for the holidays… Its a strategy no doubt, but they still need more launch games..

    1. Hell yeah!! Can’t wait for ZeldaU. So excited!!!
As for Switch, I’m just keeping my mouth shut… Nintendo is doing a great job blowing holes in its own ship without me pointing them out…

  6. 1-2 Switch should be a bundle game though. It looks fun, don’t get me wrong. But it also looks too shallow to be worth $50

  7. 1-2 Switch should have been bundled with every console for free as a digital download. It’s the Wii sports of this console and should have been included in the $299 price. But whatever, If it goes down to $20 then MAYBE I’ll buy it and that’s only because I think my Mom would enjoy it lol

  8. Not buying it. 1-2-Switch looks like shovelware– not a $50 game.
One of the reasons the original Wii was a success was that it got off with a BANG with the bundled Wii Sports. That game (or group of games) along made the Wii worth it for me.

  9. “1, 2 Switch” is bullshit. All it is is just a tech demonstration of what the console can do…if they choose to. Same concept idea they implemented for Wii U before launch and never took advantage of it at all beyond a tiny glance of gyroscope. I don’t like games like the “1, 2” coming out. I understand it’s for the newcomers just now coming to Nintendo but there are less of those than there are Nintendo gamers (overall). They shouldn’t have marketed this title and at THAT price. I’m praising Nintendo again, but I’m not 100% sure if I want this other than the excitement to have something new. I have already decided to wait at least a year before I’ll buy it. Right now, all I see [for it] is some tech demo titles and HD ports. I’ve solely been in the loop with it all to know when we will be getting Breath Of The Wild Wii U edition, and that’s all I’m after right now. That’s all I’ve wanted. For 5-6 years. I read so many concerns about the possible issues and “problems” this version could bring. However, I highly doubt that because it was formulated for the Wii U at least at one point in time.

  10. Now that I think about it, $299 was the launch price for the basic edition Wii U, wasn’t it? That didn’t come with a game IIRC. It was the $350 Deluxe Edition that was a bundle. I’m going to guess Switch games retail for $60. Close enough I suppose.

Hm. I’m starting to wonder if Nintendo is treating most of 2017’s Switch userbase as beta testers & THAT’S why online is free til Fall. If that’s the case, I hope a lot of us are critical of any problems we have with the console so if this is a beta test of sorts, we’ll be able to effect any changes Ninty does to the system when it finally starts charging for online in the Fall. They’ll have 6 months to make any changes. Maybe 7 or 8 if they don’t charge for online til late Fall.

    1. Yea, i said something similar above. We are absolutely beta testers, thats the whole reason for launching in the spring. So they can work all the kinks out by November. They know all too well launches do not define the console’s life. The Wii U by all rights had an amazing launch, then feel flat. Other systems had poor launches then went on to sell very well. (3ds)
