Zelda Breath Of The Wild Wii U Requires 3GB Install

Those of you who are thinking of getting The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the Wii U should be advised that the game needs a 3GB install on the system. So you’ll need room. The actual game download is a 13.4 GB download on the Nintendo Switch while the Wii U version mentioned is a 13 GB download. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild launches March 3rd.

      1. Same here~

I am actually hoping on that, so I can have it pre-downloaded, but then again after what happened with Paper Mario: Color Splash…I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t either. Either way they would want to be more careful, since BoTW is probably going to be the most popular launch title on the Switch, so if it gets leaked just like Color Splash did, then it might ruin the game for some people, or some people might feel too upset when they aren’t able to get the game early or something. xD

Either way, I hope they have that option, and if they don’t then whatever. I will be getting it digitally on my Wii U either way, so I can play it straight from day-one. It’s a good thing I have no classes on Fridays, but I do have about eight hours of one class on Saturdays, but I can always wait to play the game when I get home from class on the fourth of March.

        1. I’m probably going to get it digital on the switch. If I really like it I might get it on the Wii U later down the road, just because the having the map and inventory on your gamepad is such an awesome way to play zelda games.

          1. I can understand that.

I would get the Switch, but the $300+ price point is just too much for me. I am already having trouble finding a job, so getting a Nintendo Switch at that price is just too much at that point. Oh well…at least the best launch title for the Switch is also releasing on the Wii U.

I also have a Hyperkin Wii U Pro-Controller that was modded to look like the GameCube controller, so playing BoTW on the Wii U with that controller is probably enough to make up for the Wii U’s version’s weak points xD

            1. I would like to believe that it does even if we didn’t see any during E3 2016. They may have removed those for the sake of the demo or something. But I would image map functionality would be on the Gamepad in the very least on the Wii U. Just so it can mirror the Gamepad of Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD a bit better.

              1. Here you go:

‘The developers tried the dual screen approach with Zelda, but rejected it. “We realized that having something on the GamePad and looking back and forth between the TV screen and the GamePad actually disrupts the gameplay, and the concentration that the game player may be experiencing,” Aonuma said. “You have your car’s GPS system on your dash. If you had it down in your lap, you’re going to get into an accident!” Still, you can play the game entirely on the GamePad screen, if you like.’

    1. Especially if you get a physical version, I would think. Read-speed from a CD isn’t fast enough, so loading can be cut short by keeping data on the hard drive instead. Switch should do great without, seeing as it uses flash cartridges.

  1. we will eventually need more than 32GB even if we never download a single game because of installs. thanks for forcing us to buy microsd cards nintendo! god!! i just read an interview where reggie was talking about how they are going to make a profit on the system even if they put it on sale so this cheap 32GB thing is really bothering me. it costs alot more for us to buy memory than it does for nintendo, especially if they are making 2 million units for launch. it’s just so stupid. still will love my switch.

    1. What installs are you talking about? Game installs? This won’t be like the X1 and PS4. Those systems need to install data from the disc onto the system because the disc reader can’t read the information on the disc fast enough to play the game. It’s faster for the system to retrieve the data from the hard drive than from the blu-ray disc.

That problem won’t exist with Switch cartridges. The machine will be able to read data directly from the cartridge. If you buy all physical, you realistically should never have to update your Switch memory.

        1. I wouldn’t worry about those things, assuming of course that you go all physical. I finally had to update my Wii U storage last year, and i only had to do it because Humble Bundle had a Nintendo indies bundle and I got like 10 digital games. Before that I had 3 digital games and all my physical games and there was no issue.

However, if you plan on buying any digital games, you obviously might have a problem.

    1. We only have a 7 month old build of the Wii U version to compare the Switch footage to. It’s probably not the best comparison scale. When both games come out, or if we have a Wii U video from Nintendo, then we can compare a little more accurately.

                1. I already pre-ordered the Switch version but I still want to see a more fair side-by-side comparison. I’m sure Digital Foundry will have one when it releases.

  2. This seems much smaller compared to xenoblade chronicles x’s game size. I’m going to assume that the world will be significantly smaller than x’s?

    1. It will install from disc. It’s likely loading some data that’s too random access to load smoothly off a disc

      1. Ugh. Stupid Nintendo. In the past, I’ve tried using 2 different sd cards and an external hard drive and none of those worked. I suppose I can get rid of everything I have stored on my WiiU and hope for the best but I imagine Nintendo will find a way to mess that up. If that doesn’t work then I guess I just won’t get to play this game. I refuse to buy a Switch after the disappointment of the WiiU and the unreasonable pricing of switch accessories. I almost hope the switch fails horrible and Nintendo is forced to license out their IP’s. I would love to play a future Zelda game on PS4.

        1. I’ll be removing some things as well on my U. I’ll delete everything except save games.
Though for me it doesn’t matter as my USB broke by getting hit while plugged in and I lost most of my save games.

  3. Great… I love nothing more than downloading more digital data for games I bought physical versions of to avoid any data downloads. You know since I have abysmal internal storage.
