It has been discovered that on the packaging of LEGO City Undercover for the Switch, a note on the back advises that up to 13GB is required for the “game download”.
As the initial size of the game was reported to be 7.1GB this could mean the additional amount is needed for data. However, at this stage it’s still unclear whether or not this is for the LEGO City Undercover internet connection that the packaging also mentions is required, or if it’s to facilitate for certain features in the game.
LEGO City Undercover is due for release on the Nintendo Switch on 4th April in North America, and 7th April in Europe.
Wow, that’s bad. It weighs as Ryse: Son of Rome. Definitely too much going digital for it.
I really can’t stand the Lego setting, though it looks solid to me.
I highly recommend the game. I own it on Wii U, digitally mind you so my load times arent that bad on that console. So many movie and game parodies:)
Yes, I sense it’s good, though the Lego setting is definitely hurting in my case. I would have liked a parody game with another setting. I never enjoyed any Lego title unfortunately.

As someone who waited for this version, due to word of the load times on the Wii U version, I’ll still be buying it. That said, I’ll be avoiding the physical release. If anyone else has an issue with this practice, they should do the same.
What does this mean? The game does not actually come on the cartridge?
Apparently only about 7gb comes on the cartridge and you have to download the rest. It’s a 20gb game. I have it preordered on Amazon but given this news I may cancel. Wts the point of cartridge if you still have to download the rest.
I mean, nowadays having to download more than what’s on the disk is pretty normal. Nintendo was really the slowest to the punch. I expect this to be the case with much of the Switch’s library as time goes on, so I’d get used to it now lol
The only reason that’s “normal” nowadays is because games are so large that the information can’t be retrieved from a bluray disc fast enough to run the game. Cartridges were supposed to solve that issue. Information can be read off an sd card much faster than a disc. If they had gone with a bigger cartridge size this wouldn’t be a problem. Of course then the game might cost more. I hope this isn’t as much of an issue in the future.

Right but those are updates. Their only required for an optimal experience but u can still cancel them. This is basically 1/3 of the game on cartridge and u need the download in order for the game to function at all.
Must be because I don’t have a current gen console, but I most certainly have never had to download more than what is on the game; the biggest downloads I’ve experienced is GTA V’s 2+ gigs of updates and MK8’s 2 gigs of DLC.
LCU on Wii U didn’t need to install anything, I’ll take the long loading times 100 times over having to surrender 13 gigs of system memory.
Switch is looking less and less attractive with each passing day, I’m probably going to give up gaming after I’m done with the 3DS and the WIi U if this is how things go now.
Cost, so they can use the least costly cartridge.
It’s definitely a bad precedent. I would be upset to waste space on the Nintendo Switch instead of having everything on the cartridge.
All I can say is I’m glad I wasn’t planning on buying this. I seriously hope this isn’t an issue going forward. What’s the point of having cartridges if we’ll still have to download the game onto the system.
Glad to see it’s smaller than the Wii U version. Looks like they’re actually using ASTC.

Good point, but X was a MASSIVE game that couldn’t fit on the Wii U’s largest available physical medIa storage.
There are two (readily available) larger carts that could have easily housed the game.
The Lego setting was an obstacle for me as well, and this news pushes me off of the fence. I’ve already spent too much on retro games this month, I’ll hold onto my money until MK8 deluxe drops.
I’m not going to encourage this practice with a purchase. The game would have easily fit on a 32gb cart and could have been compressed to fit on 16GB.
The publisher just went cheap on us and they’re asking that we provide the additional storage space ourselves. Shady.

Wait. Is this really true? You still have to download some of the game to your system with this game!? *bursts out into mad laughter* If Nintendo games end up doing this too at some point, I’m gonna laugh in the face of every fanboy that gave Sony & Microsoft’s consoles shit for this. Of course, they are fanboys so they’ll defend Nintendo for it & shrug it off but still. It’s gonna be fun to watch them do a total 180.
Just like some have done with paid online for Switch.
